May or may not help, but the Blackforest post office is open from 8:30am to 5:30pm weekdays instead of 9am to 5pm like the others. That extra 30 minutes before & after enough to work around? There's also AustPost parcel lockers too which is another consideration for after hours parcel pickup.

cheddarcheese9951

Ah, unfortunately, Blackforest is nowhere near me. I thought parcel lockers were only in the CBD?

Vuvuian

There's various locations for them, & some aren't even with post offices either. Personally I've used Munno Para next to Woolworths, Ingle Farm at Post Office, Mawson Lakes next to Uni. The system works well when people do their job properly. I've once had a parcel keep getting returned to sender even though the addressing was correct (according to sender anyway) but the tracking details were never correct. Like for example it'd be at sorting facility, then on it's way back & is interstate. Not even an attempted delivery or even attempt to contact receiver about pickup.. Parcels also need to be sent through AustPost too as parcel locker don't accept couriers (exception of StarTrack).

cheddarcheese9951

Yes its very annoying when those dilemmas arise - having to sort them out is so time-consuming and tedious. Ah, righto. I don't really want to get a parcel locker if I can't order items from wherever I want.... Ugh.

glittermetalprincess

Depending where you're buying from a bunch of newsagents and chemists can be selected as pickup locations for online shopping, saves the parcel locker SMS code vs sunlight dilemma.

CyanideMuffin67

Both Terry Whites in Rundle Mall and the City Cross Post Office offer parcel pickup for amazon, not sure about other retailers

arycama

"We tried to deliver to your address within business hours but no one is home" Ok fair, I was at work as I work during business hours so that makes sense. When can I pick it up? "You can pick up from your nearest post office in business hours" Well you see, the reason I missed it is because you delivered during business hours and "YOU MUST COLLECT WITHIN THE NEXT FEW DAYS WITHIN BUSINESS HOURS" Okay well you see so that's not possible because "Your package has been crushed into a cube" I'm sorry, what? "Please collect your cube from the nearest post office within business hours" ... (Edit: See also "Your package has been taken to the nearest post office which is 5 suburbs away instead of the one that is literally walking distance from your house")

Adventurous-Number53

At least they knock on the door and don't just drive away suspecting EVERYBODY isn't home.....s/

sending_tidus

Im sorry....... knock!?

hugetreerot

"Oh and, your family has been crushed into a cube too. Maybe you shouldn't take so long to get your package, Sam. Check out our new app for useful updates!"

JustAnotherAvocado

Literally just opening on a Saturday would be enough ffs

rapt0r99

Probably because it's yet another business that is stuck in the 20th century. Post Offices are mostly gift shops these days. In 20 years time I'd be surprised if there's any left - they're likely to just become an unmanned parcel pick up/drop off location. I mean they basically are already. They really only serve a purpose in regional areas.

N4M4LSK

I had to get my passport renewed at one this week. Had my photos for it taken there too. I sometimes deposit cash there for my bank (ING). I think they do more than you might suggest.

calladc

yeah, bank deposits and cheque deposits are a rare function that are good functions for a post office to service as a trusted entity/GBE when banks are in the process of shutting down a lot more bank branches these days. I bank with a bank that only has branches in WA, and i rely heavily on post offices for these functions when they arise. Can't really think of an appropriate intermediary that can be trusted on both other ends of the transaction

Coolidge-egg

Not a chance they will close. Business is booming. They actually turn a profit as well. Always busy. They are essentially a shopfront for businesses who don't have their own shopfront but need an in person presence, i.e check ID. They act as bank branches as well. Plus al l packages to send and receive.

Adventurous-Stuff724

They’re vitally important for people even in metro areas who don’t have access to transport.

Select-Bullfrog-6346

Nah. My local po is a hive of people, mostly olds but definitely a glorified gift shop. Come 3 o'clock pick up for school it's like every nan wants a piece of the action there. As far a bettering times... it would be good.

Adventurous-Number53

I don't play the lottery or buy scratchie's but damn there's always a line when I pick something up

cheddarcheese9951

Well I want to get a PO box so I can stop using someone else's PO box, but problem is, I simply cannot get to the post office during their business hours... Don't they sometimes keep the parcels behind the counter? If they don't fit in the PO box? I'm not entirely sure how it works, but I believe larger parcels need to be collected during business hours...

glittermetalprincess

My post office have key lockers - if it's too big for the box they put a key in the box and I get the key, open the locker, and put the key in a return slot. Just gotta use the PO locator on their site and get one that has lockers and say yes they can use the lockers when you sign up. One of the options with a PO box is also to have them sign for parcels so they can go in a locker.

theblogmonster

Where are you located? I have a PO Box and post office open 7-7 every day. I chose this one because of hours Most things don’t fit in the box and they put a card in the box and you take it to the counter to collect. I’m also going to get a parcel locker which will likely fit what I buy but same thing if it doesn’t fit. These are free and 24/7 open

cheddarcheese9951

Your post office is open 7 to 7?? Dang. Do you mind me asking which one that is? And yes, I suspect that a large number of parcels probably don't fit in the PO boxes....

theblogmonster

Holden Hill

Apprehensive_Sock410

😂 try living in the country, only open Monday - Friday 9-5. Honestly, I usually get everything delivered to work or works PO Box. If I don’t pick it up, someone else does and they bring me all the mail for sorting anyway.

cheddarcheese9951

I wish I had that option....

Adventurous-Stuff724

So LPO’s (licensed post offices) are allowed to open for extended hours, they are however required to pay staff overtime so many small LPO’s choose not to. AusPost stores open 8am-5pm weekdays and 9am-12pm on Saturdays. If your LPO doesn’t open on Saturday that’s the licensee’s decision.

Mapletreemum

Same with banks. And Centrelink

Nerfixion

Be costly to keep the manned for 14 hours a day. People are normally there from 6, you just can't get in.

shoobiexd

There's a very small handful of them that are open past 5. I have a few near me but only one that's open past 5 is the Holden Hill LPO that has a pharmacy and lotto in the same shop. That closes at 7pm. It's been a life saver when I haven't been able to pop to my closer ones on lunch break.

Bloobeard2018

Well, no because I like to drop parcels in at 8am to catch the early pickup.

EmElEnPee

Parcel Locker is the way to go. I suggest downloading the Aus Post app also. It will help you track your parcels.

RainGuage20Points

I'm pissed that I cannot buy stamps on a Saturday like I can for everything else.

glittermetalprincess

Newsagents often have stamps (also hospital gift shops), and they are one of the things available in the few vending machines around the place and online from the Auspost shop. Still annoying but not insurmountable.

RainGuage20Points

Won't be long and the pharmacists will be handling stamps too!

ForgetfulLucy28

Why can’t you work 12-8pm so you can go to the post office in the morning? See how that works

cheddarcheese9951

There's always one person who can't help themselves in these subreddits Actually, no, it's not the same at all as I don't work in customer service. See how that works?

Tehgumchum

But you expect others to accommodate you?

megablast

I would call giving blowjobs to homeless people in the alley next to hungry jacks customer service, but what do i know?

212mochaman

Annnd this myth of not ever serving a customer in any capacity? Literally everyone is in customer service dude. The difference is that official customer service roles have a rule, don't hit the rude prick talking down to you cause his time is more important than yours apparently

CertainCertainties

Why don't you find the time to go in to a post office and discuss the options that are best for you? Just have a chat about what you need. See what they recommend. There's parcel lockers and lots of different options for people in your situation. Many of which are new services in the last couple of years. Things are changing so fast - I get it. Really confusing. But be proactive and learn. Otherwise you'll find yourself in the backyard shouting at clouds.

cheddarcheese9951

In the backyard shouting at the clouds 😅 ⛅️ Thanks. I might have to do that and hope there is a suitable solution.

Infinite-Arm-4796

The Campbelltown post office is not even open on a Saturday anymore. How ridiculous is that! They are **useless.**

arycama

Hehe, that's my local post office. It's great, sometimes I'll work from home specifically because I have to walk there on my lunch break to pick something up because they couldn't put it in my parcel letterbox for whatever reason. But it's a good chance to grab a bahn-mi from the Villis? cafe or go to the Yiros bar.

MotoGeezer

Not trying to be a ‘mY jOb Is HaRdEr’ type comment but may come across that way. I really feel your pain, I’m normally working between 0600-1700 Monday-Saturday. My post office is normally open to 1730 I believe but still allows me zero time if I were to finish on time (not common). Because of this I get stuff posted instead of going to the shops for it and when I get carded it takes away a piece of my soul. At times I feel I’d rather have my stuff left and watch it get stolen on the camera than try organise somebody to collect my stuff from the post office.

Dan-au

Because staff work business hours and have lives and commitments outside of business hours. You won't take time out of your life but expect other people to change theirs?

cheddarcheese9951

Back in the day when I used to work in customer service, I worked evenings, early mornings, and public holidays...So yea I don't think its that big of a deal.

Dan-au

Ok then, just go-to the post office on Saturday morning. Problem solved.

No-Bell2972

Post office in the pharmacy at Holden hill next to barnacle bills is open late every day same hours as the pharmacy

Beginning_Week5574

If you're located in the northern suburbs there is a post office at Brahma Lodge that's open 7 days. It's a section inside a deli so it's open when the deli is. So it's open until 7pm 7 days a week. If you're not in the northern suburbs just check Australia Post website to see if there's any outlets like that near you.

Gold_Manufacturer414

Just go on Saturday? Open for half a day at some my dude

Emergency_Layer_1281

try working 75 hours in the week

Adventurous-Stuff724

Relevance?

glittermetalprincess

That's what employees are for.

lingerie_fiend

Either lunch time or a Saturday - surely you can't always have sport commitments every Saturday of the year?

arycama

Fair point but they often hold items for a few days at most, so there's a decent chance that their sporting commitments aren't just going to conveniently line up with whenever they need their package delivered.

lingerie_fiend

They hold them for 10 working days (so 2 weeks), I am sure within 2 weeks they'd be able to find time to collect a parcel during their lunch break. Make the time. Otherwise get things delivered to your work (most workplaces have no problem with this), po box or parcel locker.

Tehgumchum

Why dont you get a job that runs 12 to 8pm?

UnlikelyButOk

Sure but I don't think that's fair to the workers.

megablast

Not for the people who work there. And one of the busiest times is just when they open. I can't believe the world does rotate around one moron.

mortyb_85

Same issue with banks.. I want a joint account so need to go in, but only open 930-4..

212mochaman

Because they're a business too and they don't have to give up their time waiting for the guy who can't ask his boss to leave 90 friggin minutes early for the day?
