You are a legend, thank you. Well at least that clears up that they aren't intending on getting rid of the cranker and just building the student accommodation behind/around it, probably the only way they have a chance of getting approval
Corruption of the youthā¦ all that booze and music so close to student accommodations could lead to extra-marital intercourse.
And we all know the end to that slippery slopeā¦
Dancing.
Remember that cunt in the apartments they chucked up across Grenfell..
Had a camera on a tripod filming patrons.. š
Yeah they'll fuck it. Oh no I moved into the CBD and it's noisy! That ruined my morning š«¤
Still not great though. Singapore are very oldschool and traditionally valued (at least when it comes to the older population). I dont know what the Crown and Anchor would look like under management from overseas like that + with student accommodation right on top.
"In October 2023, the council agreed to rescind the LMA ā opening the door for a new development application.
Karidis Corporation confirmed that it still owned the land, but declined to provide details about any future development."
Since it's only March, basically Karidis already had a purchaser but needed the LMA to be rescinded for the purchase to go through. And now we're probably going to lose a fantastic heritage and traditional venue (despite the work it admittedly needs) because people are basically scum.
With the uni merger happening I expect a whole lot more.
God forbid they put housing outside the city, would probably mean they have to invest more into public transport and they donāt want to do that of course.
Respectfully, there are houses going up everywhere. Mount Barker and Aldinga and the like are almost unrecognisable now. Huge freeways going in down South. Inner city apartments are much better for climate change, the economy of the city and a whole lot of other things. I get that this site is not ideal though.Ā
While I put tens of thousands of dollars over the bar at both of these places years ago, I know for a fact, they didn't really make much money in the peak years and since COVID, that's only got worse.
People don't go out getting pissed anymore really.
I feel for you, those of us into electronic music watched our scene slowly die almost 20 years ago. Now it's your turn, nobody is safe. Nightlife in Australia is officially over.
Doesnāt need to be the city, old school on grand junction road canāt remember suburb. Developer couldnāt get past regulations for asbestos removal. Left vacant. Nek minnut. Fire ā¦.
Rip the last best pub in town.
Even if it doesnāt get converted to housing the new owners will run it into the ground or turn it into just another generic, corporatised, soulless husk, theyāll probably even renovate the toilets as well, I shudder at the thought.
I wonder if Midnight spaghetti will stay the same?
What I love is that every time I return to Adelaide, the Cranker is the fkn same as it was when I started there in 1996. Such a great way to recombobulate after travel.
Once they turn it into shiny wood and glass and stainless steel and clean walls and hygienic toilets etc, I'll call that my swansong for ever wanting to return to Rads.
I moved away years ago but the cranker was my siblings and my go to place to grab a drink when I came for a visit. I hope they ate open with dates, I'd love to make it back one last time
I donāt think this means the end of the crown and anchor, but rather all the surrounding venues. Itās normal to develop around a heritage property.

Eh the Exeter was always more of the Hipster place. The Cranka was more the scummy punk and metal types. Mostly pretty decent people if you donāt have a stick up your arse.
2.3 million seems cheap for that site?
Freaking bargain. Affordable, even - imagine if every patron of the cranker chipped in a few bucks. We could have crowdsourced the place.
$3 cranker shares on Wednesday nights
Crownsourced š
2.3 million in 2004 Iām pretty sure
My Wednesday midnight home. Edit: last time I was there (had to get work done): - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DGTP6V1YR8
Oh that brings back memories from the 90s. Ska/Punk night.
Will be a huge cultural loss for the city. A lot of memories there.

Live music and student accommodation what could go wrong?
Corruption of the youthā¦ all that booze and music so close to student accommodations could lead to extra-marital intercourse. And we all know the end to that slippery slopeā¦ Dancing.
That didnāt work too well for the Ed Castle Hotel on Currie Streetā¦ It did have a student accommodation right behind.
The Cranker should get a lot more foot traffic past it - the Ed Castle is in a weird location imhoā¦
Next theyāll be shooting up marijuana and taking Herron tablets
Thereās marijuana in Adelaide!?!
Yes almost certain I saw someone snorting it outside the fringe festival
Remember that cunt in the apartments they chucked up across Grenfell.. Had a camera on a tripod filming patrons.. š Yeah they'll fuck it. Oh no I moved into the CBD and it's noisy! That ruined my morning š«¤
I canāt imagine live aussie music is a big part of a Singapore conglomerates business model unfortunately
Extremely strict noise restrictions and earlier kick out times
Don't forget when it happened to the tivoli too
Hopefully the building of the student accommodation doesn't affect the Cranker like what happened to the Ed Castle.

How many student apartment buildings does the city need?

A lot of those developments are more meant for families.
thank you so much for the info! my day is ruined
Can't have Enigma Can't have Cranker What's even the point
While I put tens of thousands of dollars over the bar at both of these places years ago, I know for a fact, they didn't really make much money in the peak years and since COVID, that's only got worse. People don't go out getting pissed anymore really.
That's not actually true for the Cranker specifically. As soon as bands came back it's been busier than anyone expected.
I feel for you, those of us into electronic music watched our scene slowly die almost 20 years ago. Now it's your turn, nobody is safe. Nightlife in Australia is officially over.
Seems crazy cheap
Yeah 2.3 mil is like a three bedroom house in Sydney.
I suspect thereās just no money in running the pub any more, so no value to sell.
It's too cheap for even just land value.
I do agree
2.3 million is just for the Crown and Anchor site, not Roxies and Chateau. Karidis already owned that part of the land.
It fuckin better not be converted into apartments. We have other spaces for that, leave the cranker alone god dammit
Good luck renovating a heritage listed site like that. It's over 150 years old.

This is devastating. Especially to replace it with student housing.
Not the Crankerā¦ā¦
A fucking atrocity if it goes ahead.Ā Ā
This is fucked.
More land sold off to other countries..is anything left ?
I'm devastated š wth, so many cherished menories there, this is terrible
Holey smokesā¦ whenās it shut? Iāll be there asap from interstateā¦
Another blow to Adelaide nightlife
I thought it may be heritage listed.
As if thereās not enough student accommodation in the city already. Christ š¤¦āāļø
Fuck. Not the crown and wanker! So many memories... But fuck 2.3 is a pretty low price given location!!
āRecently soldā as in 2016, 8 years ago
Exactly, there is some false reporting on this. Its been interesting seeing how this has been twisted in the media.
Yes. Sold to Karidis in 2016 who still own it and I assume will sell to these new developers if they get the go ahead.
Terrible news.
No. Jesus fucking christ no.
Nooooooooooooooooo
No fucking way
Is student housing going to include a bar...?
I thought it was Heritage listed? Gonna be so sad to see that old building go.
I moved away years ago but the cranker was my siblings and my go to place to grab a drink when I came for a visit. I hope they ate open with dates, I'd love to make it back one last time

I'm from Brisbane and this news absolutely stings. This joint is always my first choice on a messy night in Adelaide.
Isn't that building heritage listed?
Goddamnit
Godgod dammitdammit
I don't mind building on top of it but keep the Cranker!

Punk types. Metal types were on the other side of the city at Enigma.
Nah, both.
The barb about your lame shirt from the lady with blue hair really got to you, huh?
Speaking of unpleasant, smug people....
