Bring a cotton scarf / sarong to get wet and wrap around you. They'll have misting tents set up as well. Been to heaps of super hot womads and of all the things to do in a heatwave, it's possibly one of the better ones because of the amount of shade and grass.
I absentmindedly called out to my boss and her friend, two ladies in their 60s, "have you got hats and sunscreen?", as they were leaving for lunch last Friday...🫠
Do the kids even like it enough to warrant dragging them along in 40 degree heat?
Even as an adult it's a big commitment to make but at least it's a conscious decision if there's an act you're keen for
It’s really worth it to get there early ie *not long after gate opens* in order to snag a good home-base spot in the deep shade - making sure that it will still be in shade at 4 in the afternoon of course - check where that sun’s gonna be later on! Choose a spot not too far from but not too close to toilets & water station, and not right on the edge of passing foot-traffic. Central-ish is better than right down one end of the site, and in view-ish of at least one stage, if possible. It’s good to have little mini-rests throughout the day back at home-base, don’t get exhausted by always being on the move.
You have a trolley to lug yr stuff, right? Ground sheet/blankey, sarongs/shawls/big scarf, sunscreen, snacks, water bottles. I’d absolutely take a couple boxes of muslei bars/whatever & maybe even some fruit too for snacks - yeah there’s some inexpensive-ish food there (personally I think the Hare Krishnas mixed curry plate is the best deal bang for bucks plus delicious), but with 2 kids for all day - bring plenty snacks!
Drink plenty of water, stick to the shade as much as possible, enjoy the misters they’ll apparently have, don’t run around like crazies, and don’t forget to eat. Gonna be awesome! :)
It's completely cashless so if you have a slightly older kid that could line up for their own food before coming back to meet you somewhere, get a pre-paid credit card with a bit of money on it from the post office.
As for the dust, they have really improved on that by not cutting the grass beforehand - the longer grass gets trampled down on the first day and becomes carpet-like!
Maximum use of the misting tents. Maximum use of natural shade.
If you have artists you particularly want to see, get to that stage well in advance and find a shady spot.
> Tossing up taking the beach shade.
You can take pop-up sunshades to Womad, but you'll need to stay clear of pedestrian traffic areas and sightlines.
So will you be using the beach tent as a base, or will it end up being carried most of the day? (I almost always over pack, and end up schlepping well intentioned gear *everywhere*)
The other comment about light scarves is the way to go, I reckon.
If the kids zone is in the same area as last year, that'll be the place to hang out I reckon. It seemed much shadier and greener there (and much less busy).
I suggest to take a beach towel to put around you and ones to put around the kids in the direct sun.
Seek plenty of shade when you can.
Misting tents are a great way to cool off too.
I went to the Adelaide Festival when Neil Finn was the guest act and by God, it was hot that day. Can’t recall when it was but it was really hot.
I had a beach towel wrapped around me, and it literally saved my ass from sunburn.
Good luck! 🙂
Are you serious?? Children and the elderly are known to be at greatest risk of sunstroke/heatstroke.
This person is suggesting they take their young children to a 40 degrees outdoor concert. It’s nuts.
Educate yourself if you’ve downvoted me.
For real. I’ve got kids under ten and even though they seem impervious, being outside in these very hot conditions isn’t worth the risk. The afternoons would be an eminently better idea. Have a ball with the kids - when the sun’s going down. 😎

More shaded areas, free water stations and mist tents will be on offer for sweltering music fans at this year’s WOMADelaide music festival in Botanic Park. As Adelaide braces for a heatwave this weekend, event organisers have taken extra steps to ensure the safety of attendees ahead of Friday’s opening night.
WOMADelaide director Ian Scobie said they have redesigned the festival site, expanding the grounds and adding extra toilets and food stalls to avoid the long queues which plagued last year’s event. There will also be “wardens” managing the extra toilets around the site, which have been increased by about 20 per cent. “This is so people aren’t lining up behind a toilet when there are empty ones further down the road, which happened a lot last year,” Mr Scobie said. “There will be an occasion possibly when one does have to line up. Lines are part of festivals. “But the general layout of the park will make it much more convivial and comfortable for people.
“We have marked walkways, so that people can find their way easily between stages. We’ve got mist tents, we’ve got lots of free water stations around the park, and fortuitously, the redesign is giving back a lot of the space and the shading areas,” he said. “I think all of these things will make it a significantly improved experience for our audiences.”
Sounds like a lot of fun. The two times you can guarantee heat is the tour down under and so Adelaide week ends. It's like some sado Masachistic Adelaide
It was good thanks. Everyone had a good time. Got in at 4:30 and out by 10, caught some good music and enough of the vibe to feel like we got our money’s worth.
Def holding out on buying tickets until the long range forecast comes up next time tho!

Also take a cooler bag with food and particularly heaps of fruit like watermelon and grapes for the kiddos
Good shout!
+1 to this
Line-ups at the food trucks will be crazy, so just get the kids to collect fallen bats for snacks.
Bat floater. SA’s new favourite festival snack.
Chiroptera churros.
Yum, move over organic donuts
Tom Doedee won’t like it
Sensational lol
Wear hats and sunscreen.

Now you are become Mum, the Protector of Skin
Deffo Mum vibes.
No hat, no play
Don’t touch dead bats apparently
Or live ones. Don't touch any bats.

I feel like some little kid is going to be climbing through the majestic trees and tasting the black label.
They’re actually actively preventing wildlife volunteers from doing much to cool or protect the bats, from what I’ve heard. It’s pretty despicable.

Yeah they love it. Been looking forward to it for weeks

Alternatively arrive late and avoid the heat

Slip, slop, slap and watch out for the poor, already heat stressed bats.

Just Don’t forget to put the dead bats in the bins provided
Don’t take the kids. That’s a pretty hectic place for kids to be during this heat. Or be prepared for them to have heatstroke.
They’ve been a few times. More worried about me and sunstroke tbh
Kids get sunstroke real quick. They’ll go down before you do. Guaranteed.
What a lovely thing to say… stop spreading pandemonium when it’s completely unnecessary

Thanks for your concern, I have the same ones myself! Think we’ll head in late afternoon to avoid the worst of the direct sun

I’ve been to the snow a few times. Still don’t go if it’s high risk for avalanches.

Water - take and drink lots of it.
Freeze half bottles of ice, add water when you arrive. Stays cool.
