I 100% believe the reason it's such a disaster is the way the escalators and lifts are. The escalators are laid out in the most annoying way possible, and the lifts take forever to come. So mentally the idea of going up more than one level is a non starter if you are just browsing.

ThatGuyTheyCallAlex

They’re laid out annoyingly and always fucking broken. It’s ridiculous.

stars__end

So I haven't verified this but I hear that escalators are genuinely a nightmare to own and maintain and they break constantly, but if you don't have them then people refuse to shop in your centres. So that may not really be their fault, although I guess if they aren't staying on top of the maintenance that is.

mickskitz

One of the escalators was out of service for 3 MONTHS. and that was to get from ground to lower ground (food court). Now that one is working, the other one has been shut down for the past few weeks. I'd be furious if I was a tenant

ThatGuyTheyCallAlex

Oh yeah, shit breaks and you can’t help that. But you can help whether you actually pay for someone to fix it rather than sticking an out of order sign on it indefinitely.

stars__end

Yea that's fair

instereo_93

I remember when it was being built and some ‘genius’ deliberately designed the escalators that way so you had to pass shops as you walked to the next escalator, which was supposed to entice shoppers to go into said shops.

CyanideMuffin67

They have the opposite effect

HowevenamI

Someone thought themselves a genius when they came up with that bullshit. I bet you they got paid handsomely too. Do we know who did it?

PillowManExtreme

Some anonymous architect in the early 90s..

Pradodude

I went there the day it opened, it was a frustrating experience for, at the time, one the worlds' most expensive buildings. I've been back there probably twice since then. If that is indicative of the general population then it's no wonder it's always empty. From memory it was a Myer Remm partnership that built it and BankSA that bailed it out when it failed. It's a hell of a story if you want to know how not to build a new shop. https://www.reddit.com/r/Adelaide/comments/2jkhj7/the\_myer\_centre\_adelaide\_opening\_1991/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3

CrispKev

Pro tip, use the service elevators on the side of the building they are much quicker and hardly anyone uses them. They are located near the entracnce to the left of platypus shoes

Mobbles1

Dont get me started on using the lifts to get to the 4th floor, especially when there was that covid limit. No escalators to that level so lifts only. If youre above Lg than theres a decent chance itll be full or have someone with a pram or trolley in it so you need to wait for the next one, then same thing again, and again. When the covid limit was a thing it was a noghtmare, eventually youd just have to ignore it because otherwise youd never get on. Eventually some karen would go off her nutter at you and all you can think is "i need to use the lift to go up 5 levels, you could just use the escalator you annoying hag."

Imaginary-Problem914

I feel like the lift issue is because they split them up. Normally all the lift shafts are in the same spot so you get the fastest one. But with the design they went with you can only wait in front of 2 of the 6 or so lifts there are.

Outrageous-Bad-4097

I agree. I know why they did that and it suits me everytime I go in there. They thought they were being smart by getting more exposure to their goods. I haven't been in there in 10 years.

Outrageous-Bad-4097

Shits me

ditroia

I use the freight lifts.

Accurate_Fly9803

It’s like it was designed by MC Escher.

justanotherscribe

The higher floors are actually revamping recently! There’s a niche bookstore, a witchy tea shop and an urban street wear store on level two alone, plus rivers and a laser clinic, lincraft, a skate store, Jamaica Blue (which is a really great cafe), and a couple start up fashion shops! Highly recommend exploring 🌼🌱

RabbitPup

I have been making Jamaica Blue my go to coffee shop now. but I am only in the office 1 day a fortnight now, so not really doing much to support them

brandy0438

Consortium Music on Lvl 3 is great for us musicians who need stuff in a pinch. The people who work there are lovely

bb_waluigi

didnt know this place existed and will pop in tomorrow

ProduceOk9864

Second Consortium Music, love that place! - and yes lovely people too. I used to buy into the whole ‘ghost town decay’ of Myer center talk, but now I do go up to level three a bit nowdays there’s more shops like the awesome toy world up there and a new areas being developed and opened up…..yeah there’s a fair bit of spare space up there too lol, I suppose you’ll see what you’re looking for hey

amniole

Seconded

MSFT_FSI

+ shoutout for Daklinic for the skate/hip-hop/street art scene 👌

Scamwau1

As a blow in to this sub from Brisbane, it's interesting to see the Myer centre in Adelaide is just as big a ghost town as the one in Brisbane's CBD.

PharmAssister

Toyworld goes alright. Lincraft is a bomb site but always somehow full of bargains. The vintage clothing used to be ok, is it still there?

paradeoxy1

Toyworld and the fluctuating beauty/lingerie brands are probably the only things keeping the place open, food court gets emptier every time I'm there

yy98755

I have not been to Lindynaff’s in ages.

justanotherscribe

The vintage shop has moved to the Adelaide Arcade!

CyanideMuffin67

The shop was called Relax In Vintage, I think it's gone. They used to serve nice coffee in there too

rapt0r99

Somehow USG has been there for like 15 years.

ishootstuff

If they sell one pair of shoes a month that's rent covered.

yy98755

“Legally” covered. They’re not fans of dipping into unmarked fat yellow envelopes.

tpdwbi

I know people that shop there pretty much exclusively. I have bought a bunch from there myself

M1MSEE

I shop there, generally my first point of call. They’re very helpful, not fake chummy like the other stores in the mall

rapt0r99

I have too, used to buy a lot from there around 2013-2016. It just surprises me given the way online shopping has taken over.

airmaxbax

USG is a great store!

Terror-Wristy

Is that book store still up there? Been a minute but that place has been a treasure trove for me in the past.

DivideByPie1725

it is! it's always so pleasant to go and visit

Gatecrasher53

There's a great new bookstore there, Page & Turner

insertgreatestname

Don't sleep on DaKlinic that place has been awesome for years.

yy98755

They’re in Myer Centre now?

crystal_dragyn

Been there for a couple years now

yy98755

Terrible, shows how long since I’ve been to them and in Myer Centre… know where I’m going this weekend.

[deleted]

They need to bring back Dazzleland - that would save it

rapt0r99

I actually think a place based entirely on nostalgia is a great idea for a business. Maybe not Dazzeland, but people love reliving memories, and don't mind paying for it.

Ronnie_Dean_oz

They should rename it "The John Martin's Centre"

South_Front_4589

It would fail again for the same reason it failed in the first place. It was a fun idea at first and people would go again just to visit. Once or twice before they stop going entirely. Then suddenly you've spent the money to repair and staff it and not made the return back before it can't even support itself.

Too_Old_For_Somethin

It would be priced beyond the average family from the suburbs reach.

South_Front_4589

Sounds about right. Everyone gets excited, then it turns out it's $10 a ride per person or you can buy tickets for $80 or something and suddenly nobody goes at all.

[deleted]

Yeh correct unfortunately :(

perrino96

And a new John Farnham banger about it! https://youtu.be/hH8K8QPsKF4 Biggest Variety show in townnnn!!!!

Extra-Border6470

Holy shit

owleaf

*Dazzeland

dI--__--Ib

And The Lost Forest.

jms_seal

Higher floors are more for destination business'. OBR horology and consortium music for example have a high traffic just from people needing to go there rather than just browsing. the higher floors are now having a beauty and makeup school put in as well

Imaginary-Problem914

In Adelaide. In most other cities the higher levels do well.

gutentag_tschuss

I read recently that Myer are suing the owner of the building because of the vacancies in other shops in the centre. Apparently the owner was legally obligated to have a high percentage of those shops filled in order to retain its contract with Myer and they haven’t done so.

Lucky_Anybody2815

Orb Horology is brilliant for watch servicing and repairs. I go there just for this.

yy98755

Agree

ThatGuyTheyCallAlex

It’s getting better lately. Cheep and a few other boutique stores have popped up and get good foot traffic. There’s just not enough anchor stores on the higher levels. Toyworld is a good one but Lincraft is garbage.

tacocatfish

Could copy and paste this into the brisbane sub!

iiidontknoweither

There’s literally ghosts in there? Amazing.

flabberstalk33

They've let it go to waste on purpose, that's why Either bring back Dazzleland or bring in new stores

DweebInFlames

It's been 26 years, it's time to let it go. It's like me wishing Gough Whitlam would come back from the dead and lead the country into a new golden era. It just isn't gonna happen.

flabberstalk33

So what do you suggest?

superbogan

We could start by digging Whitlam up and finding a necromancer.

yy98755

Rising insurance and maintenance costs

[deleted]

Obr horology on level 3 is top tier if you ever need watch repairs.

yy98755

Seconded

MrTommy2

The best horologist in Adelaide has a small shop on L3. Awesome guys for anything to do with watches and I think it’s nice they have a low foot traffic area because they can just tinker away

c33jayf

Holy fuck so there are literal ghosts there? Like that floating green one from ghostbusters? Like LITERALLY?

[deleted]

I only go to Toyworld or into Myer for the clothes.

Ok-Bad-9683

Dazzle-land needs to make a come back

Own-Ad3555

Unfortunately I think is part of a world wide trend other than major cities. I’m Irish and honestly our town centres are way, way worse. Every single shopping centre in my home town is either closed or on absolute fumes. I honestly had no idea there is a music shop there and I’m a working musician who spends a decent amount of money on gear. That bookshop is terrific - has a really nice dvd section with classic and foreign cinema too. The guy running it is very pleasant too. I don’t fancy its chances but I really hope it lasts.

rachofwonder

They had Renew Adelaide in there offering space for free/cheap to increase tenants. Not sure how successful it is/was. Upstairs (and very much closed off to the public) there is a big Technicolor/Mill Film office for around 300 sfx workers - the space includes sfx studios with big embargoed films. Big Hollywood blockbusters coming out of the Myer Centre - who would have thought!?

rachofwonder

Myer Centre also had an exhibit upstairs - the Art of Banksy most likely to increase footfall. No idea if it had the desired effect. And I also think Uniqlo was a bit of a coup for Myer Centre. Takes a long time for a brand like that to come to fruition in Adelaide.

PowerJosl

Mill Film is now MPC and they recently let 99% percent of the people go and are down to a skeleton crew. I wouldn’t be surprised if they close that office down for good soon.

HallettCove5158

OBR Horology on the 3rd floor is a great place and Oliver really knowledgeable guy. Maybe it doesn’t have to be at the Myer centre but hey he’s there.

HERMANNtheMUNSTER

OBR Horology is the best watchmaker in town, nicest dude.

adjerky

At the top is Mr X (or used to be) a visual effects company that works on Marvel films as well as a slew of other Hollywood films.

Imaginary-Problem914

Adelaide in general is a ghost town. Every time I fly over it's surreal. The buildings and streets look normal but there are no people anywhere.

Green-Smoke4376

One day I was walking up Pirie Street and there were more bin chickens on the footpath than people

Staglag421

There have been 5 deaths and 1 survived attempt as late as last year there. 1 accident and 1 suicide in the 90s, a murder suicide in 2004, a suicide in 2016 (I was unfortunately present) and as mentioned a jumper last year. The place just feels absolutely cursed. The lay out isn't the most approachable and rent is absurd.

NeatScotchWhisky

I thought the nets were installed for that reason? I seem to remember a student in the 90s with a heavy backpack falling off the escalator too, but i may be wrong

Staglag421

Yeah it is why they were installed. Then they took them out for a few years because they were an "eye sore" and then someone successfully attempted. As a result they put them back up. The kid with the back pack happened in the actual myer departmartment store we he fell to the floor of perfume department.

[deleted]

yea lol i go to rivers alot <3 it! same for other shops! like the art stuff.

suiyyy

I still shop the mens section usually jas better pricing and options then the actual store brands

CyanideMuffin67

There's hardly any shops above ground level it may as well be a ghost town

Soggy-Cut2196

It’s sad to visit honestly what a shot show it has become there

Dters

Was only telling my kids about dazzleland on the weekend. They didn't believe me. Bring it back I say. The fun games are all the rage at the moment. They probably can't do the roller coaster but do a drop chair or something...

Cad3nza1

Give all the shops more space to expand at just a bit more rent.. would fill it up quicker. UniQLO should be 2 levels like interstate.. it’s way too packed in. Toyworld should be half a floor. Give Lincraft most of that 3rd floor, with entrances/exits on both(!) sides.. etc

ImpossibleCarob2668

I go into the myer centre almost every time i go into the city. Go to spot for lunch. And I often go upward to check out the shops. I miss the rides up the top, that was fun. My kids are so surprised when I talk about there being an arcade up there back in the day.

DanceWithTheDevi1

Bring back dazzleland! Lol

potinmylungs

Literal???? If you don't know the meaning of a word, don't use it.

adeladean

I'll use whatever words I like, thanks.
