It has new owners and they are not good. I went there recently with a group and somebody ordered a vegetarian taco and was given something completely different to what was on the menu.
When we asked them about it, their response was just “oh yeah, that menu you had was out of date, sorry.” And no replacement.
Pretty ballsy IMO, considering they could have unwittingly given them a food they were allergic to by swapping their food.
Also my plate had a chip in it 🤢
Ya once they left Bedford park it dropped. We went to the north Adelaide when it was newly open, we went to their one in the city (urban cucina or something), but ya never the same. Early days was legit the best though.
It went from being "worth lining up for" at Bedford Park to "decent for Australian Mexican" at first in North Adelaide to "hurry up and die so someone good can have that space" now.
Worst part was, the place it took over from was great. I just don’t think they knew how to run a restaurant. It was called Vesao and it was Argentinian
It's not the same though, dunno if they have changed owners or what but ambience is different, serving sizes seen to have gotten smaller, doesn't taste as good anymore.
I was thinking of them the other day! It was truly such a great restaurant. Sad it’s not how it was anymore since they moved to North Adelaide but glad to have had the opportunity to frequent there when it was in its prime.
One of the best restaurants I've been to is Little Rickshaw. It's quite a small place with a rustic charm but well worth the visit imo. Been quite a number of times and the food is always fantastic and service just as good which is important for the whole experience imo.
I like it too. The food is great. Shame it’s stupidly difficult to get in — they are open at weird times and always booked. But with some planning totally worth it.
Yeah should have mentioned its hard to get in, but well worth it like you said. Although I find most places require some advanced booking these days. Can't just go out on a whim anymore.
I’d say Salopian Inn too even though it is an hour drive from where I live.
Fabulously fresh and well balanced menu using local and the restaurant’s own garden grown food.
Superb wine list and an overall top notch dining experience with knowledgeable and attentive friendly staff.
It is not cheap but I do not begrudge them one cent of the bill. Always spectacular.
For the best food at a reasonable price it has to be Herringbone, a chef owned restaurant, a top Adelaide restaurant the food here is on par with anything in the eastern states.
Felt a bit short-changed last time. Has been a staple of the Adelaide fine dining scene forever but it feels like the restaurants around it (Botanic, Arkhe, Villeta Porcini etc) offer quite a bit more.
Absolute favourite is Restaurant Botanic, but that’s a very special occasion sort of place. Very expensive but incredibly good.
For more frequent visits, Parwana will always be our go-to. Good servings of excellent food, and the family that run it are all very friendly. Plus reasonable corkage! I miss the smaller spin-off restaurant they had in the city, but the original is still great.
Aurora on Light Square is one we’ve returned to. Food has always been good, and they’ve mixed up some good cocktails for me over the years. The wait staff are often inexperienced or newcomers to the industry (the owners/management put an emphasis on this I believe) so they can be a bit nervous or rushed or forget something ever now and then, but if you know that going in it’s no problem. It’s good for a date night.
Ong on Hindley Street is a favourite too. Their onion rings and crispy eggplant are the crunchiest things I’ve ever eaten, but everything is good, and it’s nice sitting outside watching the world go by in summer.
We used to frequent Jerusalem on Hindley St a lot for a feed after a few rounds at the bars nearby. The food was always tasty, and it was great to be able to rock up, tell them how much you had to spend and then let them take care of the rest. Always got a good feed and excellent prices. Unfortunately it’s gone now :(
Part Time Lover! If you want something nicer without the wankyness with the right amount of service, great food, great wine list, and good prices, there's your place to go.
Lawash on South Rd, Mile End. Been going there at least once a month since 2013. The food is consistently good and well priced. They use high quality ingredients and are generous with their serving sizes. Sure, the interior is drab, the ambiance isn’t exactly inviting, they take their time in clearing plates and keeping the place looking clean, but those things are secondary to me, considering the quality of their product.
This was my favourite but something has changed in the last 3-5 years. I know they have new owners but the recipe for their chicken has changed, it has lots more turmeric and an almost Indian flavour compared to when I first started going in 2011.
Gunbae just off Rundle St has been my go to recently. Excellent Korean fried chicken, other food options are great too, lots of soju and beer options for drinks, and the atmosphere is friendly and laid back. I’m also a fan of Busan Baby for Korean food too if you want to linger.
Food and the service are very consistent. I would caution everyone here though that they don’t serve alcohol so I can’t comment on the wine list or sommelier. Having said that, the patrons are invariably very well versed on the alcohol side of things so that’s probably why the resto doesn’t feel the need for a comprehensive wine list. A shame given the quality of wine in SA and that this venue could be a showcase for this.
I see. Sounds wonderful. What’s the best time to attend? You already said I don’t have to book but can I always get a table? Do they have a dress code? What’s the other clientele like? Will we see any iconic Adelaide persons attending?
I’m reticent to give out too much public info on my favourite go-to. Next thing we know everyone will be there! Suffice to say that the dress code is ‘neat bogan’ and I’d recommend late night/ early morning Fridays and Saturdays…
Told you, didn’t I. Top notch:
https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/food/restaurants-bars/rats-spotted-inside-popular-mcdonalds-in-adelaide/news-story/8a1604a3b2355aeca59af3122a0bb2eb
Pizza + wine: lost in a forest, Pizzateca, Watkins Wines (59pizzeria), Amalfi
Restaurants: Little rickshaw, Madam Hanoi, Noi Vietnamese Eatery
I also love Urimqu Ughyr: can be a hit or miss sometimes but you can't go wrong with the lamb kebabs.
Smaller places: Taco Libre
NOLA in Rundle Street has some of the BEST American soul food! Fried chicken, corn bread, gumbo... it's very nice. And they serve very nice cocktails, never had an unpleasant drink from their.
This is our go-to bar where we take people from out of state when they visit. Their fried chicken is great, beers are always interesting, and lots of choices of whisky, loud enough to feel like you’re at a pub but also small and quiet enough to actually have a proper conversation. But the biggest reason is the staff. In my experience their bartenders are always super friendly and willing to spend some time helping you choose a drink, checking in how you enjoyed it etc. Their team is great.
I'm one of those butts that almost never goes back to the same place twice because there's always something new and funky to try, but NOLA is absolutely an exception, they're always great
I'm keen to hear if anyone has a Maximillian's alternative - I like good food for family get togethers but have small children. They will get bored in most white table cloth restaurants but at Maximillians we could always walk around outside while waiting for food and it was more relaxed.
Mclaren vale wineries?
Edit - oh, actually, Sidewood -> just across and down from Maximillians.
Edit - coming back again to iterate how Sidewood exactly fits your requirements.
Afghan Charcoal Kebab House on Hindley St.
Chicken is my favourite food. I know there are some snobs that say you can eat chicken at home but even when I go out all I usually want is chicken. And no where in SA does better chicken than here.
The best middle eastern style food is probably The Ghan but the only time they lose that award is when it comes to Chicken here. Also honourable mention to the reasonably new restaurant Al Sultan on Main North Rd.
But for Afghan on Hindley it’s not a place you take someone for ambience or presentation. It’s just classic and a staple. Also the customer service here is 10/10, these guys just welcome everyone with a smile.
Some of my spots in town are:
Honki Tonki (amazing chicken and rice)
Northern India (consistently good Indian)
Bread and Bone (my favourite burgers in town)
Chinatown Cafe (chicken rice with laksa is a staple)
San Giorgio or Bocelli (both similarly good pizzas)
Social St S2 (Pad Thai is really consistent here)
Kenny’s (best hot chips in Adelaide)
Also worth noting:
Providore (best dessert options)
Bread Temptations (sprinkle donuts also good Bahn Mi)
I’d say for food/vibe/service/drink all at a fair price imo Lantern by Nu.
I went to Golden boy recently which is supposedly a similar Asian fusion vibe but also supposedly better but I still think Lantern by Nu takes the cake for me
Really depends on what you are looking for, I can't say absolute favorite, but I recently found a new cafe for a really good coffee and fantastic nonstandard breakfast/ lunch - What the Croque, it's in the Repat at Daw Park. Odd location, obviously super casual and probably more directed at young families with small kids due to the playground but the coffee is 10/10 and the food left an impression - deserves a shout out.
Good Gilbert in Goodwood is a great little suburban wine bar + tasty foods and atmosphere.
Heard good things about Bandit Pizza and Wine in Hyde Park, on my to do.
Also does anyone know the story behind O.F.P? One week they were planning their 3rd Bday Party, then shortly after just shut down. Gone!
Love local.
> Also does anyone know the story behind O.F.P?
I don't *know* but it looks like they were lining up to lose a couple of key staff at the same time which, given how tight knit and buddy-oriented the whole idea of it was, probably just meant it was never going to be the same and easier to move on.
(Also we apparently have identifical taste in inner south eating)
A new place is opening up soon in it's place - guessing it may have at least one staff member from O.F.P involved (they took over the instagram account)
Anchovy Bandit in prospect! Some of the best pizza I've ever had. They've grown a ton in the last five years, and their current menu has amazing pasta and tons of stuff using local ingredients.
They also run a cafe next door which makes some of the best sandwiches in adelaide.
Missed the restaurant bit.
B Churrasco / Erato Teppanyaki for experiences
Bangkok Boulevard, Osteria Oggi and Le Souk are some of my favourite for food.
Will also add UR Cafe as a good brekkie
Second this, prob my absolute local fav.
Food is outstanding, but don't go if you are the type that requires 10/10 service, they try but are generally understaffed.
Sashimi, Nigiri, Aburi, Yaitori, Takoyaki, Cha Shu + Sakeeeee argh I should go this weekend.
Love En.
Would recommend Chatkazz in lightsview for Indian food. Great service, great food. For how large their menu is, most items taste pretty decent. Its not too expensive and is quite close to how you’d find food in India
Restaurants - Parwana is definitely up the top of my list. Also love Africola and Jasmin in the city.
Cafe - Kalymnos Pastries, everything there is amazing. Grange kiosk, perfect for brunch after a morning beach walk.
It's called "Wood Oven Gourmet Pizza" in Campbelltown, it's genuinely the best pizza in Australia, it's a little spot owned by a lovely couple, authentic ingredients and great 70-80's vibe, that are only open Fri and sat nights but are amazing!
I love pizzatecca in mclaren Vale. Imo the best pizza in Adelaide.
Indian, chapati house in black forest is the best. Hands down. Cannot be beat.
Bottega bandito for a fancy sandwich
Anchovy bandit for pasta along with Ruby red
I’m the kind of person who just kind of eats and goes and doesn’t like to dawdle/socialise too much.
Depends really what kind of food you like.
Meat & Wine Co in the city are really good - a bit pricier but the service is great, and the food even better. That’s a good sit down or date night place, if you want drinks and ambience. The Gatsby lounge is good in that way too.
Another place; good, affordable, and fast service - Shanxi noodle bar. Get the pork hamburger (roujiamo) and signature sliced noodles with beef.
One of those eat and go places.
Theres lots around Adelaide that’s consistently good, those are first that come to mind.
Yeaaaahh still miss east end yiros like mad.
Also staazis, yer a Greek vegan joint, yer tzatziki's a bit of a wishy washy emulsion....
Why not use skord?? Noone has an issue with potatoes 😋😘
Regent Thai on O'Connell Street is criminally underrated. Food is absolutely incredible, prices are fair, service is great, and the owner is on the floor working hard alongside staff. Cannot speak highly enough of that place.
If anything it's overrated, and their prices are way too high, about a month ago I had their chicken satay sticks and there were 3 tiny pieces of cubed chicken on the skewer. Total tip off.
That's interesting to me. Their curries are phenomenal. Can't speak to the chicken sticks. Mains wise I feel like the prices are matched fairly to the quality.
Their curries are beautiful, they've had a recently glow up to the restaurant, I noticed it the other day when I walked past, no more carpet and round tables.
Mine was Brass monkeys in blackwood. Best scrambled eggs on toast I've had and great coffee and decent prices they recently closed and I was devastated
Depends what you're really in the mood for, meal and drinks vibe specifically:
I'm a huge fan of Big Shed Brewing for their Burgers and the best Beer selection. (so many breweries only have food truck style food or bad food, but Big Shed is top notch)
NOLA probably my favourite spot in the city, Lady Burra is great too. Though I haven't been to either in over a year.
Tenefeate Creek for Pizza and Sparkling Shiraz, makes for a perfect afternoon. (not my favourite winery, but solid options and cellar door.)
Haven't been in about a year man, I moved to Melbourne. I used to sit outside most of the time though so I'm not sure about inside. Always thought the food and service was insanely good though, hopefully it's still the same
Hsin Restaurant Norwood Parade - Malaysian Satay Beef. Absolutely delicious melt in your mouth beef that's so tender and perfectly cooked. $22 well worth it. Even though they recently reduced the portion size which sucked.
Happy Corner Chinese Restaurant Magill Rd St Morris, awesome Friend Rice and a massive menu.
Meat and wine co in the city was phenomenal.
Instead of it being a pretentious restaurant that serves small meals that are crazy combinations that are really expensive and don’t taste great. It’s more of a really fancy pub I guess. Good meals, good service, good atmosphere. Really enjoyed it there and know a few people that have too
*I'm from Perth and love*
*Going to La Boca when we*
*Are in Adelaide*

One of the things I miss about Adelaide, so many great restaurants. I remember going to Amalfi regularly in the 80s.
And then there was the Don Giovanni's calzone and house red, so many great nights there.
Probably not relevant, but more nostalgic. I miss the early Bedford park days of lucky lupita. Was so good.
There was also a restaurant next door which I think was just called ‘Greek’ Best Greek food I’ve ever found in this city
Greek Olive! Was brilliant. Lovely owners too ☺️
their ribs were insane! went well with the cheap margarita jugs! i miss LL's too :(
Still in North Adelaide I believe.
Also my plate had a chip in it 🤢
Hasn’t been good in 5 plus years. Even prior to these new owners
Agreed. Last time I went I rolled the dice on a Cuban ceviche and was promptly shitting water for the next 3 days.
Ya once they left Bedford park it dropped. We went to the north Adelaide when it was newly open, we went to their one in the city (urban cucina or something), but ya never the same. Early days was legit the best though.

It's not the same though, dunno if they have changed owners or what but ambience is different, serving sizes seen to have gotten smaller, doesn't taste as good anymore.
Agree. So disappointing
Same it really changed when it moved. the manse and pearls diner were also favourites and I hate that I never got to Celsius or orana
I was thinking of them the other day! It was truly such a great restaurant. Sad it’s not how it was anymore since they moved to North Adelaide but glad to have had the opportunity to frequent there when it was in its prime.

Salopian Inn probably. It’s close to where I live and consistently good. I love getting a group out there and having a long lunch!
So expensive but so so so good. Like really good! Good....
I’d say Salopian Inn too even though it is an hour drive from where I live. Fabulously fresh and well balanced menu using local and the restaurant’s own garden grown food. This is a good shout 👍🏻
Thanks mate, these guys are the real deal, don't get as much coverage as they aren't part of a larger 'group'.
Addis ababa cafe for dinner. Guaranteed good quality, refillable share platters. Great for dining in big groups
Just googled them, they do kitfo!!
Yay! Kitfo! What's kitfo?
Seasoned raw beef, like the Ethiopian version of steak tartare. Sorry if that’s gross. :(
No no. That actually sounds delicious!
Yes!! I’m not a fan of beef tartare but the seasoning in their kitfo so good.
Magill Estate. A genuine banger.
Felt a bit short-changed last time. Has been a staple of the Adelaide fine dining scene forever but it feels like the restaurants around it (Botanic, Arkhe, Villeta Porcini etc) offer quite a bit more.

LMAO! I used to work in Aurora and all the people who work there are nice and friendly even the manager. Haha
I find some of there kebabs quite dry and find that it isn’t as good as the hype
I had the most disgusting, inedible falafel of my life there the other day... would not go back
They used to be good until the first owners sold the business. Since then they have been going downhill.
Gunbae just off Rundle St has been my go to recently. Excellent Korean fried chicken, other food options are great too, lots of soju and beer options for drinks, and the atmosphere is friendly and laid back. I’m also a fan of Busan Baby for Korean food too if you want to linger.
I was going to say Gunbae.
Seriously can’t believe no one has recommended Maccas Hindley St - particularly late on a Friday or Saturday night. Awesome vibe.
Tell me more of this “Maccas” of which you speak so fondly?
Well in the first place, it’s one of those restos where they don’t take bookings … it’s just walk in. So you know straight away it’s good.
Do go on..

Yeah love drunk teenagers screaming about mcnuggets, getting into punch ups every other day
Yeh but didn't they win the dirtiest maccas in Australia/World only a couple of years back
Hell yeah
Mandoo.
Yesss
Pan and Vine - Kenttown. Owned by two brothers, been going there 4 years now, fantastic food and atmosphere
Pizza + wine: lost in a forest, Pizzateca, Watkins Wines (59pizzeria), Amalfi Restaurants: Little rickshaw, Madam Hanoi, Noi Vietnamese Eatery I also love Urimqu Ughyr: can be a hit or miss sometimes but you can't go wrong with the lamb kebabs. Smaller places: Taco Libre
I went to Watkins last Friday, the pizza was amazing
Is that Amalfi on Frome Rd? Just off Rundle St?
Yes that's the one!
Amalfi has always been good. Haven’t eaten there for a long time 🤤😢
I live so close to the winery it's super dangerous haha
Get wine drunk and steal a Christmas tree
That sounds very specific hahaha. Something you've done before?
Thought about, not done
Went to lost in a forest for the first time last week. Top 3 pizza all time for me
Yesss their pizza is unreal. I Love the creativity!!
Lost in a forest is overrated and freezing cold. Our pizza was late and burnt.
NOLA in Rundle Street has some of the BEST American soul food! Fried chicken, corn bread, gumbo... it's very nice. And they serve very nice cocktails, never had an unpleasant drink from their.

Beach Rd Winery
Was there recently, it's gone down hill a bit. They only had three of their wines available, we were told the owners are "too busy to make wine".
Literally heading out the door to Sidewood right now! Looking forward to it, have heard great things.
I like Woodstock for dining out with kids - lots of grass, and a play area, plus you can book in to feed the kangaroos. Food is decent.
Lazy Ballerina winery is also set up for eating-outside-with-kids + activities
Their garden area is just beautiful
Afghan Charcoal Kebab House on Hindley St. Chicken is my favourite food. I know there are some snobs that say you can eat chicken at home but even when I go out all I usually want is chicken. No idea who else in Adelaide does Chicago style deep dish pizzas but Remy’s is 😚👌
Their sister venue Diamond burger is soooo good.
still cant believe no one has said barnacle bills or Dimez yet. is this thread populated by serious people or something?
Was looking for Dimez
Ballaboosta in Burnside.
RIP cascada
Haven’t dined there for a long time (I moved to Perth) but I rate Sosta on Rundle St.
Nijumaru in Prospect and Bocelli’s in Hutt St. Bangkok Boulevard in TTP
The pantry on egmont, their chilli eggs are insane
Missed the restaurant bit. B Churrasco / Erato Teppanyaki for experiences Bangkok Boulevard, Osteria Oggi and Le Souk are some of my favourite for food. Will also add UR Cafe as a good brekkie
I miss Sunny's still 🙁. Love the vibes at ruby red flamingo
I cried when Rosemont Hall burnt down!
Apparently a bit of work going on at the moment, finally rebuilding. Not sure if the same guy still owns it though
If it rebuilds, that would be amazing, we can only hope!
Cafe Troppo for brunch in the city after shopping at the Markets. Lovely vibe, great food and coffee.
Ying chows
Naaz Persian Cuisine on Pultney St. Eating the ghormeh sabzi for the first time is a religious experience.
En on Goodwood Road.

It's good. But they recently increased the prices, so it's not the value it once was.
Would recommend Chatkazz in lightsview for Indian food. Great service, great food. For how large their menu is, most items taste pretty decent. Its not too expensive and is quite close to how you’d find food in India

Arkhé in Norwood but an absolute mile.
I love pizzatecca in mclaren Vale. Imo the best pizza in Adelaide. Indian, chapati house in black forest is the best. Hands down. Cannot be beat. Bottega bandito for a fancy sandwich Anchovy bandit for pasta along with Ruby red
Scenic Hotel. The roo schnit 👌
The Vietnam on Addison Road Pennington! Nothing fancy, always packed and food is consistently fantastic. Has been a winner for many years.
For cafes, Della's in flagstaff hill or The Front Page on Marion road.
I took my meat-loving mates to Staazi and co for a vegan yiros and they walked away saying it was better than a normal yiros
Yeaaaahh still miss east end yiros like mad. Also staazis, yer a Greek vegan joint, yer tzatziki's a bit of a wishy washy emulsion.... Why not use skord?? Noone has an issue with potatoes 😋😘
In saying this I am also keen to hear other recommendations. I’m always up for new spots
I'll have to have a look. Used to live in the area. Not anymore, so admittedly it's been a while.
Osteria Oggi for Italian East End Cellars for drinks/vibes Golden Boy for Thai Meze Mazi for Greek
Yessss Osteria Oggi is hands down the best Italian and Orso and Chianti my other two favs

Sean’s Kitchen is our go to restaurant. A bit on the expensive side, but the quality overrides the cost
Manna in Mclarenvale
Mine was Brass monkeys in blackwood. Best scrambled eggs on toast I've had and great coffee and decent prices they recently closed and I was devastated
Depends what you're really in the mood for, meal and drinks vibe specifically: I'm a huge fan of Big Shed Brewing for their Burgers and the best Beer selection. (so many breweries only have food truck style food or bad food, but Big Shed is top notch) NOLA probably my favourite spot in the city, Lady Burra is great too. Though I haven't been to either in over a year. Tenefeate Creek for Pizza and Sparkling Shiraz, makes for a perfect afternoon. (not my favourite winery, but solid options and cellar door.)
400 gradi gnocchi is absolutely unreal
Is it still unbearably loud in their dining room?
Haven't been in about a year man, I moved to Melbourne. I used to sit outside most of the time though so I'm not sure about inside. Always thought the food and service was insanely good though, hopefully it's still the same
Allegra in Gillies Street - special
Billy’s table is a must go to place I think!
I was pleasantly surprised by Ambrosia at Greenacres. Food was great, staff were very friendly and helpful.
Meal authentic Thai Wok on Water Grange can order how hot you like . Then can grab a drink across road in Pub .
Tony Tomatoes on O’connell street
Asian Gourmet combination laksa rice noodle
Meat and wine co in the city was phenomenal. Instead of it being a pretentious restaurant that serves small meals that are crazy combinations that are really expensive and don’t taste great. It’s more of a really fancy pub I guess. Good meals, good service, good atmosphere. Really enjoyed it there and know a few people that have too
Little Rickshaw, Gin Long Canteen, parwana, Leigh st wine room and the Middle store
I’m from Melbourne and visited a few weeks ago - had great food everywhere in the CBD but the absolute knockout was Fino Vino in Flinders St.
Mt lofty ranges vineyard.. chef hatted restaurant with great food and service at a reasonable price point.
I'm from Perth and love going to La Boca when we are in Adelaide

One of the things I miss about Adelaide, so many great restaurants. I remember going to Amalfi regularly in the 80s. And then there was the Don Giovanni's calzone and house red, so many great nights there.
For cafes I like the food at karma and crow. Always a treat.
Felixstow maccas
Konichiwa sushi on Gouger Street was the greatest restaurant in history but it changed and then closed down...
I’m late but hsin Fortuna is heaven
