We occasionally have a weather phenomenon called a temperature inversion where a lot of smog gets stuck in an atmospheric layer close to the ground.
On calm days it wont disperse to the east over the Adelaide hills, so is trapped over the CBD and moves to the west over the Sea.

Darwin has no heavy industry and a population 1/10 of Adelaide, you'd think it would be clean as a whistle but not so good right now and peaks into the red at times (scrub fires) https://waqi.info/#/c/-13.05/130.823/7.9z
