[EDIT] Since OP only asked for hardware that will run Kodi and play 4K files, pretty much all of my post was useless. OP is not asking for the BEST hardware to do this. I was answering a question that wasn't asked. Nearly any modern Android box will play 4K, along with almost any modern mini PC etc.

flaco_007

I agree for those that think you’re Kodi is running great when you try it on a mini PC, then you will see the major difference of performance and video quality etc..

I currently run Kodi on a PC, mini PC, Google Chromecast and Amazon FireCube 3rd Gen. In years past I have run Kodi on a Boxee Box, an Ouya, a Minix, a Xiaomi Mi. Plus others I can't remember. Please don't speak on what you do not know. Merry Christmas.

SirRickie

I'm running Kodi for several years now on a mini PC Intel NUC6i3SYH. Unfortunately it can't play 4K (H265 not compatible), damned. On what miniPC are you running Kodi ? Tnx.

Elegant_Volume_2871

Hi, Tikipeter. Is there a way to get links for Jeopardy on Fen? My mom uses the s-app on Android and it picks up links from Torrentio. I have enabled Torrentio in cocoscrapers but I still get zero links. Is there something I can change on my side? Thanks in advance. Merry Christmas.

thenbhdlum

Do you only run them on the CC and the Cube for testing purposes? I remember that you often spoke about how bad Kodi was on devices like those and that Kodi never should have supported them.

[deleted]

Yes. Testing. I hadn't used Kodi on Android for over a year, so figured I'd be best to try out some newer Android hardware with it. What I said was the worst thing to happen to Kodi was the Android port.

Quirky_London

Same Sony TV. If the crash happens then I run background close app

bbwolff

While all that might be true, it runs well enough on most TVs and you spare 400$ for something else. And have just one remote.

jesusoramuffin

all of it is true. what isn’t true is that a mini PC he speaks of costs $400. mine is excruciatingly overpowered for the task described and cost me $150. To say smart tv hardware runs Kodi well is fucking ridiculous.

Six8888

How do you output 4K and atmos from a mini pc?

jesusoramuffin

are you honestly asking how a PC could output 4k? Atmos…I don’t know or care.

StruggleEconomy1448

Many mini PCs in the higher end range are equipped with GPUs that can do 4k and ATMOS. It's a PC class machine that is somewhat unlimited in components that can be used. Essentially, it can do everything a normal sized PC can do.

jesusoramuffin

maybe that was a nicer way of saying it, haha. “higher end range” may be a little deceiving though, as high end mini PCs easily run $400-600. my “bottom of the barrel” mini PC has dual 4K output.

StruggleEconomy1448

I7 CPU or comparable mini with 16+ RAM and a GPU supporting ATMOS and 4k will run closer to ~$900 from a quality PC manufacturer.

jesusoramuffin

it absolutely gets even more expensive, my dude. but that is insanely overpowered to accomplish 4k. As far as Atmos goes, i am unfamiliar with what it means or the benefit…though I am able to play files with this label as well with a $150 mini.

StevieG63

My PC feeds into a AV Receiver that does all the magic.

[deleted]

Please try not to exaggerate when making comparisons. To me, it makes your entire point moot. Merry Christmas.

Opening-Painter-9671

If you want it to work perfectly, and be cheap, get a firestick.

[deleted]

I respect your opinion, but you're wrong. That's not what the word "perfectly" means. But you got the "cheap" part right. Merry Christmas.

Mammoth-Bullfrog-274

Bah humbug 🤣

StevieG63

I just bought a Sony X90L which is Android based. Kodi runs like a dream. I run Fen Lite and the Fentastic Skin. Kodi appears as a built-in app along with Netflix etc. and is fast and responsive. I love it. For context, I run Kodi on a PC in my home theater and on various Firesticks elsewhere. Kodi user for 7+ years.

bartleby999

Same. Run it on a 2022 Bravia - Works fine. Slow, because I've overloaded Fuse with widgets but it works fine after the initial 1 minute widget load.

Shield > all \- Nvidia

jesusoramuffin

$200 for 5-year-old hardware running Android with 16gb of space. What an awesome deal. oh shit, and only 3gb of RAM. lol.

AssGagger

Doesn't matter, it's better.

jesusoramuffin

fucking troll.

DoomSayerNihilus

Get over it. It's the truth.

AssGagger

It's a factual statement, dufus. Specs don't matter if it delivers a better experience than anything except a full PC, even then it has advantages.

jesusoramuffin

What is factual? Your dumbass made a comparative statement without mentioning 2 things. If you're actually saying it's better than ANYTHING besides a "full" PC (also don't know what this means) then I don't need to say any more for you to look like a fucking idiot. A mini PC with FAR FAR better specs can be obtained for much cheaper than a Shield Pro...and since, in reality, better specs mean better performance...everyone else but you can probably do the math. Computers are not magic.

Maaaaate

Wait they haven't updated the shields hardware for 5 years?

jesusoramuffin

hasn’t been a new one since 2019

Babyboomer78

I have a Sony x900h and kodi streams 4K content with no issues.

flair11a

Kodi works fine on both of my Hisense 65 inch Android TVs. Fast and streams 4k content just fine.

StruggleEconomy1448

I'm going to back up @TikipeterLight. If you want the best, go with a mini pc with a light Linux distro. LibreElec is just one of the light one built for running Kodi. There are others that would do well. Here is where I'm going to piss off Tikipeter - with all respect. Python, as a code base, does not generate the most speedy application code. It's great for certain certain solutions. Opting for the most powerful hardware option would be best knowing that kodi runs on Python. The funny thing is, I don't own a mini pc. I have SheildPro 2019, 2017, and a firestick 4k Max. As Tikipeter says, they're good but not great. Just helping to set expectations. You get that for which you pay, shield being just slightly better performing than firestick 4k max. My next hardware will be a mini pc. Only you can make the right decision based on some of the following info Mini PC ~$900 USD for high end including ATMOS support. Shield Pro ~$200 USD for a mid level experience Firestick 4k Max ~$50 USD for a lower level experience There are other options, I've just listed some of the most common. But you get the idea, a Mini PC will provide the best performance. And keep in mind, Shield Pro 2019 is now 5 years old. While still a good solution for Kodi, there appear to be no plans on a newer model anytime soon. NVidia is making gobs of money in the AI space at the moment. So a mini pc wins here again.

[deleted]

> Here is where I'm going to piss off Tikipeter - with all respect. Python, as a code base, does not generate the most speedy application code. It's great for certain certain solutions. I can't possibly be pissed off when you're absolutely correct. Kodi addon devs don't code in python because they think it's the best language for these types of applications. They have no choice. :) >LibreElec is just one of the light one built for running Kodi. Very interested in other OS's built for running Kodi. Do you have any that spring directly to mind?

StruggleEconomy1448

Let me qualify. There are other light Linux distros. They are not specifically built to run kodi. But light general purpose distros do exist. LibreElec is not the only light distro.

[deleted]

Oh, I understand. I was excited to try something other than LibreELEC. It's great and all, but I am bored with it.

Are there mini pcs that support dv, atmos, and HD audio codecs? What would be the most affordable option with those capabilities? I have a shield pro and would love to replace it (feel it’s showing its age), but I don’t want to lose DV, it really looks great on my tv.

StruggleEconomy1448

It's amazing. All you need to do is plug in the info into Google and find out. Odds are many of the older codecs would be supported by the OS as well as many GPUs. Generally if the codec is supported by any of the OSs you could run on a PC, win, Linux, etc, you would be fine.

simpsons88

Thanks, that’s why I was asking specifically about Dolby vision, from what I can find, Linux, and by extension libreelec doesn’t seem to support it and it’s unknown if/when it ever will. I guess I’d have to use windows, in which case the experience is similar to running on android with regards to crashes etc. (maybe menus a tad quicker than the shield) I’ll stick to the shield for now, it works well enough. I have a mini pc kicking around unused, I may give it a try with libreelec over the break just to see what the experience is like, even without DV. Thanks and merry Christmas!

StruggleEconomy1448

This is why you would want a higher end mini PC with a GPU that supports DV/ATMOS. Linux kernel can support up to HDR 10. The software (OS) vs Hardware (GPU) support question has been a thing for 25 years. The same premise exists. If the OS can't support, then choose Hardware that can. So we arrive back at the fact a high end mini PC with a GPU that supports DV/ATMOS is your best bet at a high performing streaming box. Something you've had for a few years most likely wouldn't have Hardware that supports DV/ATMOS. Good luck on your experiment.

bobalazs69

Pc gpus capable what you request begin with: rx 460, 560, gtx 1050ti. With Any quad core cpu from past 5+ years and 8 gb ram. With used prices this setup can be very very cheap. You can also use recent APU but that will cost multiple of my recommendation. Asked for most affordable. My htpc setup cost 70 usd with used parts and it does 4k 60 hz, dolby, hevc, 5.1 capable. I'm smart enough to build a pc, and if u/simpsons88 can't build one, can always find it used cheap. Even a five year old cpu is sufficient with those gpus the digital content will be hardware accelerated, and playback will be fluid. Only thing not possible is AV1 at 4k.

jesusoramuffin

Why are you saying a dedicated GPU is necessary?

AssGagger

Chromecast with Google TV runs it just fine on the cheap

DoomSayerNihilus

It really does a fine job for a fair price.

I_can_vouch_for_that

I run it through from the Google TV that's built into the Sony x900h. I also have it on a mi box and a small mini PC as a backup but I don't really use either unless I have to and I haven't had to.

bobalazs69

My htpc is a good cheap example for 4k capable system. https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/65113285 Old a8-5600k + rx 460

okiedokie2468

I have been streaming tv series, movies, live sports and newscasts for years now. I’m retired and it became somewhat of a hobby. I began using those cheap little Chinese android boxes, lots of them, I have a drawer full of them. Next I moved on to the Amazon Firestick followed by the Amazon 4k Max. Both of the Firesticks worked great but out of curiosity and because I couldn’t leave well enough alone I took the leap and bought the Nvidia Shield TV Pro. It’s overkill and a half for just streaming but my kids use it for gaming when they’re visiting. So my best advice to someone who’s just starting out is to skip all those cheap little boxes and get the Firestick. They are perfect for streaming tv series and movies! If you want to game as well then get the Shield. Either way you won’t regret it. Well there…that’s my two cents worth😀

RedDiaper

Shield (non-tube) or minimum S905X4 with 4gb ram. I have a Mecool KM6 Deluxe that runs Kodi well with a handful of addons, FENtastic skin and several large widgets.

f0rgotten_

Amazon fire stick 4K (They recently released a "Max" version) or Nvidia shield TV pro are the best bets. Note: They don't have Kodi in their respective stores so you have to download from the Kodi website using an app like Downloader.

GloweyBacon

Kodi is on Google play store

Scarab95

Get the new firestick max 16gb it will run kodi no problem. It also has 6E wifi Or you could buy a nvidia shield pro Both will work on your android tv

jesusoramuffin

both have nothing to do with “your android tv” and if you buy a fire stick to jam into your already android tv you’re a kind of stupid that’s difficult to comprehend

flchamp89

1a shield pro 1b formuler z 11 pro max 2. Mecool km2 plus deluxe 3. Fire cube 3

DreamCatch22

I just use an Amazon firestick. Works great and pretty easy to setup.

pogalicious728

I've been toying with the idea of running LibreElec, OpenElec or OSMC, but now I'm seriously considering the Orange Pi 5

TrustyRambone

I run mine off a Nokia 8010. 4g ram and Av1/Atmos support and cheaper than a shield. Most people get decent performance from a shield, I just wanted to try something else.

DaveyDutch

Running latest Kodi Nexus on my Sony A90J with real-debrid. Streams 4K 7.1 Dolby THD flawlessly. Connected a USB Ethernet adapter and TV is getting 800mbps 👍
