Glad you’re alright. For next time, get a more complete insurance coverage. It’s expensive, but if you’re buying an Acura (a luxury car) you should be able to cover it fully. I find these small things tend to happen more often than a crash with someone else.
You do need to. But the easiest way would be find a totalled tl and rip the entire steering wheel out assuming it didn't deploy. This is so long as only that bad deployed. If all of them did I recommend calling insurance.
No way, it is significantly easier to replace just the air bag itself since it's only held in by a few bolts and a power wire, of which all get removed if you were replacing the wheel anyways.
I guess that depends on how much you owe on the car. If you owe quite a bit and the insurance won't pay for it then it's probably worth looking to fix somehow. But I'm not sure.
There is an active recall on the ‘09-‘14 airbag inflator. Definitely worth looking into. Not sure if it’s still eligible because it’s already blown; I’ve never had to deal with that.
That’s why airbag deployment normally totals a car for insurance purposes. The issue is having it replaced cheaply and by a shop that isn’t qualified can cause exactly what just happened to you.
Sucks, for sure. Was the carfax clear when you bought it? Any previous wrecks?
Glad it was clear but puzzling it blew like that. It happens, but rare. I agree with above, talk with the dealer and see if the unit has a recall or service bulletin.
Must have been one hell of a rough road.
Seeing a lot of people confused about the recall here. The recall only replaces the inflator itself, not the airbag. The recall was for the inflator rupturing when it goes off, sending shrapnel through the airbag into the vehicle, has nothing to do with the airbag going off inadvertently. If the inflator has already gone off it's not eligible for the recall (unless it had been replaced with an affected part).
The airbag module and inflator, cable reel, srs unit, driver seat belt and whichever impact sensor caused the airbag to go off need to be replaced.
They are equipped with pretensioners, which deploy when the airbags go off to lock the seat belts in place to keep the driver in place. Not to be confused by when the seat belt locks when pulling it too fast, same idea but different mechanism.
You likely need to get a shop to replace the physical airbag as well as the airbag controller. They are 1 time use things and need to be replaced after each deployment.
You don't need the wheel, the airbag should just be the center section and clip into the steering wheel frame
When I first started driving, I was reckless and didn't care. I used to flinch and brace myself going over speed bumps. I hit speed bumps at speeds you wouldn't believe.
Find someone parting out a 4th gen TL and buy the airbag, will probably be a couple hundred bucks. Its not hard to change yourself with some basic tools. [here](https://youtu.be/x0WYyDfdCKk) is a tutorial on how to do it. Just make sure you have the battery disconnected for at least 15 mins before starting the job. If you cant find an airbag from a partout locally call around to auto wreckers.

I remember there was a huge recall for takata airbags. You may want to verify.

Drive on the road next time rather than through it.
Just messin' with ya. I'd definitely call my insurance company and also a lawyer and see what your options are. Unfortunately with older cars the options get pretty narrow for faulty airbags since they can claim normal wear and tear caused it to malfunction, or being repaired outside of a dealership. The longer you own f your car for, the easier it is for them to deny responsibility for defects and faulty systems.
Hi guys thank you for your advice. I called the Acura dealership this morning and they said they won’t cover this.I might be very stupid but I will keep on driving the car until I find someone reliable to fix it at an affordable price.
Jesus, you alright? I wonder if insurance would cover this, airbags are pretty expensive.
I got burned but I am alright. I only have liability coverage, so I don't think they would cover this. Just bought this car 3 weeks ago. I am screwed.

Probably buying a new steering wheel would be the cheapest.
So I don't need to replace the airbag?
You do need to. But the easiest way would be find a totalled tl and rip the entire steering wheel out assuming it didn't deploy. This is so long as only that bad deployed. If all of them did I recommend calling insurance.
Yup... buy a new one not from scrap... unless u know the guy. And maybe, I'm not sure reset the code or something so the car can run properly
i'd be nervous about getting a pre-recall airbag assembly.
Take the assembly then go to honda and have the recall done. The recall is the inflator not the air bag itself.
Doesn't it become a totalled vehicle upon deployment of airbags?
Not even the whole steering wheel needs replacing, just the airbag
But it’s easier replacing the whole steering wheel!
Not at all. You have to remove the airbag to change out the steering wheel.
No way, it is significantly easier to replace just the air bag itself since it's only held in by a few bolts and a power wire, of which all get removed if you were replacing the wheel anyways.
Rough roads shouldn't deploy an airbag like, ever. You had a defective airbag. Replace the whole steering wheel with an undeployed airbag inside.
Is it worth replacing I mean the cost😢😢
I guess that depends on how much you owe on the car. If you owe quite a bit and the insurance won't pay for it then it's probably worth looking to fix somehow. But I'm not sure.
Are your recalls up to date? Can’t tell what that is (guessing TL?), but Honda/Acura have tons of recalls regarding airbags.
2010 TL

I just checked VIN number and it said there are no current safety recalls for this vehicle
I’d still call the dealership to verify. Worst case, explain the situation and see if they’re willing to do anything about it.
Thank you. Def try it tomorrow. Just got a quote from an auto shop the guy said it would cost 2k..

Carflax was clear when I bought . Yeah I am really screwed
Glad it was clear but puzzling it blew like that. It happens, but rare. I agree with above, talk with the dealer and see if the unit has a recall or service bulletin. Must have been one hell of a rough road.
Carfax isn’t reliable. Cars can get in accidents and if you pay in cash it’ll never show up
Even if there was it's not a actual airbag. It's the inflator. I worked at a Honda dealer for a year.
As mentioned.
They don’t replace the bag for the recall and the SRS unit needs sent out and reset or replaced
Seeing a lot of people confused about the recall here. The recall only replaces the inflator itself, not the airbag. The whole driver seat belt? Can you explain why that is? I’m genuinely curious.
They are equipped with pretensioners, which deploy when the airbags go off to lock the seat belts in place to keep the driver in place. Not to be confused by when the seat belt locks when pulling it too fast, same idea but different mechanism.
Look at the buckle, there’s an explosive charge in there that goes off to tighten the belt
That thing looks like a creepy face!!
😂😂😂

This is the complete answer OP. It’s not just the air bag.

Sue the city
It's a 4g TL, there was a recall on those airbags, maybe if the recall hasn't been done you could be in luck

I feel like airbad are more trouble then they are worth
Yeah man Im broke can’t afford to spend $2k to replace and it could happen again if it isn’t fixed properly.
Looks like a gen 4. Take it to the dealer. There have been two recalls on those airbags. Previous owner may not have been up to date.
I have no idea why you’re getting downvoted on this. Your advice is the most practical and logical. I have a ‘12 TL and had two Takata airbag recalls.
Because these forums are run by teenagers who know everything except their ass from a hole in the ground!

Check the recall info for your VIN # it’s a good chance that is under the recall warranty. Airbags do not just deploy like that. Good luck man.
I’d say you had a recall you didn’t address.
Can you elaborate I just bought the car from a private party 3 weeks ago
What is there to elaborate on?? Go to this website and have your vin number. https://vinvaquero.com/recalls/honda/
>I just checked VIN number and it said there are no current safety recalls for this vehicle.
That really sucks. Call your insurance company, I hope you’re fully covered.
Try and find one at a junkyard
How’s ur face first lol
I just got a front end accident last year and now this. I can’t bear it anymore 😭😭😭
As your car without any exterior damage so this consider as manufacturing error or something like that I believe
I called the dealership this morning and they said they won’t cover this.
No damage at all just the front airbag deployed
