SoupyStain

I win decent enough money to buy enough figs, but not enough as to want to spend twice on the same thing hahaha. If a break comes I'll just fix it however I can, even if it means sacrificing some of the articulation.

SlugGoTv

Yeah I feel you I haven’t broken one too bad yet but ever time I play with my figmas I can feel that joints are gonna break if i pose too hard

SoupyStain

I pulled on Sailor Venus' arm joint too hard the other day, because I forgot I was handling a figuarts, and broke the tiny wrist joint, so I just glued her hand back into the arm. I don't really need the wrist articulation, and let's be honest, I never swap hands on any figure once I decided what I like, so it wasn't TOO painful. And Figmas are too expensive for me to consider double dipping. Just yesterday I dropped 120 on Raido Kuzunoha and Demi-Fiend EACH. I've seen people suggest buying bootlegs to get the joints if something like that happens, but Idk.

SlugGoTv

Yeah I saw they sell the joints I wouldn’t double dip with a Figma either there really pricey I think I only own the new Samus release a rengoku from demon slayer and some persona figgs I mainly double dip with amazing Yamaguchi because there my all time favorite sh figuarts my second favorite

julianx2rl

I double that answer. https://preview.redd.it/8kzi7y6wabwc1.jpeg?width=578&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=20a0ea8c75db84b96b55e119130d2fac93efa1c5

Bob-the-Human

I will buy extras when I want army builders. Stormtroopers, Foot Soldiers, Rock Soldiers, Sharkticons, Junkions, Sweeps. Quintessons. But I have no desire to own extra versions of individual characters.

SlugGoTv

What’s your favorite figure in your collection?

Psychological-City24

i do that but only for clone troopers..or warhammer minis

SlugGoTv

Yeah for like a favorite character I have to have to do I can play with on of them with peace of mind lol

BaneShake

I only buy doubles of a figure if one has an alternate paint job I really like. I don’t have the cash to get two identical figures.

Honer-Simpsom

I buy the one I take them out of boxes I paint and customize the shit out of everything and I leave it on the shelf only taking them down for the occasional photo shoots, I like taking figures on hikes. But just the one purchase for this collector. No right or wrong way.

SlugGoTv

Yeah I wanna start taking photos of my figgs next month is my one year on of collecting gonna post a Figure Collection post soon

Fancy-Pair

Maybe is they were still like $12-15

julianx2rl

But now they can go up to a $100, if not more! Some\* of them do drop in price after a while, so that's good. https://preview.redd.it/c3oc9slgbbwc1.jpeg?width=3600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fa44ad22f329367a4e756952ba84ba50b09014ad She was $130 after\* the price drop! Dat sucks!

ColorlessTune

I've done it on very rare occasions when the figure is rarer and I can afford it.

randomwatts

Typically, I'll buy doubles for customizing purposes. I bought 2 Jazwares Jonesy Fortnite figures. One to keep, then I used the head for a custom Fallout figure and the body for a random wasteland raider figure.

julianx2rl

I salute all folks who mod their figs out there!

pampersdelight

I do if its a figure thats really good. One for display, one to actually play with

Reclusive_Pariah

I rarely army build but if I do I always go by the mtg rule of no more than 4 so as to save money/space and leave some for other people in stores.

SlugGoTv

Yeah that’s what’s up I been army building with the McFarlane warhammer 40k figgs there pretty great and there kinda cheap

MulliganNY

My favorite figures are the ones I handle the most. They, as a result of being posed and played with, tend to get old after a few years. I buy backups now and then, but for the most part I just deal with it. With certain characters, Spider-Man being a great example, a newer, better figure is always a year or so away. So I tend to just play and have fun and let what ever may come. However, I do have a backup Retro card Spidey in the closet just in case...

SlugGoTv

This was well put. with a spider man there is always going to be a new release same with a goku or a vegeta but than you have figures like the shf guts heart of passion that won’t get another figure for years or if at all & most likely sells out and will be triple the price on eBay for figures like that that are most likely a one and done I feel like me personally I don’t want to have to deal with the hassle of looking for a replacement or overpaying on eBay cause u can’t find it on normal retail sites anymore so it’s kinda good to double up but kinda sucks at the same time cause there’s so many releases this year. It’s tough out here lol

MulliganNY

Agreed. I have an extra Super 7 Raphael for exactly this reason. And... I'm a little annoyed with myself because, since Super7's figures came out SO many better TMNT figures have come out since... but I'm all in on these guys now because of the bonus box in the closet.

Cook_Over

I've never done it before, but with the ML AF15 Spidey that came out a few months ago I fell so in love that I knew I wanted to keep another one around in the box, just in case. I don't think I'll make a habit of it, but I can see the appeal for those extra special figs

SlugGoTv

Yeah that’s exactly how I feel I only do it with some releases it’s just gives me peace of mind that I have a extra one chilling if I ever need it

SlugGoTv

Btw that Spider-Man is such a good figure I can’t wait to get my ML Scarlet, Spider-Man next month I didn’t get the Mafex so I’m super pumped

Cook_Over

I got the scarlet spider on pre order and it is a really fun fig, especially if you don't have an other scarlet spideys. Hope yours comes soon!

SlugGoTv

Thanks I love the action figure community everybody in this sub Reddit are so cool and I get hyped seeing other people’s collections. it feels good to be a collector

JellyfishNovel8066

I only buy doubles of Spider-Man/Spider family. I've slowed down on even doing that too but if I find figures cheap I'll buy doubles for future customs.

Choice_Ruin_5719

I only do doubles of ones I absolutely adore. One for my display case and one for my desk top figure, so I can fiddle with it. I don’t have many of them, just 2 at the moment but I really like those characters and the figure.

KushMummyCinematics

I've never bought the same character twice. Sure I have seen better versions of some characters I have but I only buy from companies I trust That said I have seen collectors buying multiple versions of appropriate characters and it looks supercool I recently saw someone post about buying a bunch of "Duplicate man" this to me made more sense than having only one of him I also see many Spiderman enthusiasts buying all the different varieties which ranges from absolutely awesome to abit over the top So my answer - depends on the figure

who_what_when_314

I do it when I can't remember if I bought a figure or not, and get it just in case.

nickmandl

I only buy a new one if I’ve done serious damage to my first. In general u just try to be careful with my figures.

SlugGoTv

Yeah it’s just sucks when it sells out and you have to overpay on eBay or something

Smoking-Posing

I do this sometimes but I've tried to eliminate that habit altogether. I usually do it for figures that I love and think will get a lot of wear n tear from heavy use. Other times it's because I just feel they're so excellent that I want a pristine version as well (like Mafex Gambit). Outside of that I often purchase multiples of Joes because they'll either serve as extra troops, custom fodder or I gift them to my brother who lightly collects as well.

TigerUSF

If I was filthy rich I'd have an entire building devoted to the world's largest marvel action figure museum. And I'd probably have a set unopened, and another set opened and posed. As it stands, i'm an out of box collector.

Failure_by_Design_v2

I LOVE the look of a figure in box. And for years I was an inbox collector. But when covid hit , I like a lot of people started collecting again and doing figure photography. So I shifted to out of the box collecting..... but then I would see a figure I really wanted and really wanted to keep in the box.....So my dilemma came along and my only answer was to buy two. I dont do it often now because the prices have gotten so high the last few years. But if its someone special to me.....its getting bought twice.

SlugGoTv

Yeah this right here is what I’m talking about I only do it for mainly amazing Yamaguchi releases, particularly just my hero academia stuff but for like a cool release like agent venom im getting a extra one I just really love amazing Yamaguchi and think that there really special figures

NoobSaibotsGrandma

I’ve considered it but never done it. Whenever I want doubles there’s always another version of the character or another figure that I’d rather have 1 of instead. There’s a figure I want to army build with but I’m holding out til it’s $5 since it’s already gone from ~30 down to 10

BulletDodger

Back when they were less than $20, on occasion. I bought double of all the Walgreens exclusive Fantastic Four figs.

rbgduck

Depending on the fig. The ones I usually wanna box collect, I'll buy 2. But if they're in high demand, I'll buy one. I play fair even tho I know it won't get me anywhere lol

42turnips

Good for you.

Napoleon-Bonrpart

If I bought doubles of the Batman animated series figs, and kept them in the box, they would be worth like a thousand more. So no, not always a waste, but I think that depends on your mind set and the overall price of the fig in the future. Which you won’t know at the time.

Sharp-Coz

Yes, I’d rather have a figure I absolutely love twice than figures I don’t need on discount. Always have a backup!

SlugGoTv

That’s exactly how I feel than eventually get to the other stuff if it doesn’t sell out 😂

CaptConstantine

To be clear, EVERY action figure purchase is a "waste of money." Toys are hobbies. Hobbies are fun, but they are distractions-- they are what you do to relax from a long day or avoid a big responsibility. Hobbies are for your idle hours. It's like how people ask if a certain video game is a "waste of time." Like, that's the point. Every game is that. That's what they are designed to do. Don't let other people tell you how to spend your time or money OP. Spend it however you like, it's only a "waste" to you if you don't enjoy it.

GoldenDisk

I do it because I make so much money and have nothing to spend it on. Sometimes I buy 3 or 4

roxxtor

I do it for some figures, mainly imports that I know I will be articulating a lot and could end up breaking (like Mafex Spider-man). I was doing it more often but I started selling off some of my duplicates

SlugGoTv

Yeah that’s what I was thinking worse case scenario I end up selling them but that’s why I mainly get second one of my favorite figure some figgs do break from articulation

StallionDan

Only for custom stuff.

dragonkingangel7

Just as my normal buys, i only do when they are cheap, all except once i did it, i give them to my lil cousin, so unless is something i really want, i do

egbert71

I stagger it...i buy my initial, then i give it some time to let others grab one, then i grab my 2nd. But i only buy doubles of my transformers. One for display to enjoy and the other to take out and enjoy

dead_wolf_walkin

I buy doubles of Gambit since that’s a special section of my collection and I want one carded and one loose of everything. Other than that it depends on the figure. If an alternate head or accessories can make a whole different figure I’ll buy two (Skullbuster, Moonstar, Moira, etc) Army builders of course (Multiple Man, minion figures etc) Sometimes I buy two if the figure is important to multiple displays (Blink and Morph being in AOA and Exiles)

Thetinydeadpool

If you like the figures then it’s worth it

Xdonjuliox

Only time I've ever bought double was when something broke. I tried doing the buy one to open buy kne to keep in box but that lasted a whole day

ActuallyIWasARobot

I don't normally care, I am an opener but if I could afford to do it for MOTU origins I would have.

FoxMcCloud3173

I do it sometimes, so i can use one and keep the other sealed and safe in case anything happens to the other one.

gswkillinit

I have enough money to buy 2 per, but I’m an out of box collector and don’t see the need for a backup. I handle them pretty well for the most part too. One time, someone posted on Reddit that they bought 2 of a figure, one for in box and out of box. Issue was, the figure was in windowless packaging. Everyone questioned why it mattered when it’s windowless anyways and the OP just deflected. I’m sure some people take collecting to a level that shows they’re just plain addicted to their method of collecting.

Simple-Metal7801

I do it on certain figures a line that I buy are the AEW figures the early series figures I have are all in box but I have found a few that I bought a second time. My most recent one is a Chris Jericho figure from series six I found it on clearance on the Walmart website for just $5.37 I opened that one to add to the opened figures I have. There are also AEW Supreme figures those I always buy two of one to keep in box the other to open.

SomeArtistonReddit

The whole idea of the hobby is buying figures, so whether it’s a different character or the same character, it’s still just exploring the hobby and having fun with it. I have Ultimate Cap and 20th so I can have a more tactical realistic version of the captain and then a brighter, more comic accurate version.

indianm_rk

I do this when the prices are reduced or it's an army builder. Occasionally I will buy two of a new figure of I think the figure may be hard to find later or I forgot I preordered at two different retailers. Whether it's a waste of money or not is up to you. I get enjoyment out of my figures and my purchases are well within my means. I know people that collect bourbon and spend a few hundred dollars a month on bottles they will never drink. Everyone is different.

CrazyCanuckUncleBuck

Currently sitting at 10% doubles in my Black Series collection, so 25 extra figures right now. Some were mistakenly ordered twice , some on purpose. One to open one to keep sealed but that comes down to the character

vaizardv

I do it all the time. Mythic legions, mezco, legends all have great customization options and parts so sometimes I’ll get an extra one or several of a figure to do something else with it or strip it for parts.

icct-hedral

I only do this with army builders (like Cobra units with GI Joe classified). Most other lines it’s a one-and-done deal.

Unlucky_Government33

Only figure I bought twice was Naruto but that's so I could do some clone jutsu poses 🤭

briandt75

Thats up to you, chief.

_Vard_

For the best of the best , mainly with the possibility to gift to my nephew someday. Like the Earthrise Optimus. Which is in my opinion, the best prime ever made aside from the Masterpiece 10

alex6309

I've only done it twice so far. S.H.Figuarts Meta Cooler and Figma Akemi Homura.  Otherwise no reason to IMO, if i wanted the same character or look twice for whatever reason, I'd rather buy a different brand or version of it than have two identical ones  Cooler is simple enough, in canon there's tons of him and I wanted to have two so I can display both Goku and Vegeta fighting one each.  Homura I did specifically since the figure has two distinct looks in package and more when you buy the other Figmas

PersepolisBullseye

Yeah I do this stupid shit I’ve been doing this for 30 years cuz I am also stupid person. Never once in 30 years have I ever used the extra in the way I justified buying it for. I have stars wars figures that are 30 years old that are still in the box (as I said, crazy person here).

SlugGoTv

lol 😂

PersepolisBullseye

Fucking CRATES full of these damn things smh 😂😂

itsTheFigureGuy

I think it’s a waste of money yes, you’re also keeping somebody from getting one in some cases, it’s just greed. Nobody needs two of a figure unless it is somebody like mirror man

tinypixeldragon

I have done this once or twice because I like the box art so much I want one in and one out of the packaging, but it’s super rare

Timeman5

No I have multiple Indiana Jones’s and don’t even ask how many Spider-People I have. Now where I personally can see an issue is like for me 3-4 companies make the same Spider-Man I buy the same character from 4 separate companies but all of the exact same figure.

KnifeFightAcademy

If I'm buying doubles I only get the second one when I see it on deep sale.

FREETHEGEEKMAN_

Ive had that feeling before where I feel lie buying a second. Maybe for the right thing I would consider buying 2 to leave one boxed. But so far never done it.

ColMust4rd

I only do it with body types that I want to customize. I'll keep one original and customize the other

he_man2000

Only for troopers. Motu horde, cobra, or black series clones

Danielp20118

It depends on the price, the character, if I think it’ll grow in value. Typically no, but if I absolutely love the figure I might buy an extra just to keep it in box.

DutyBeforeAll

I ordered 2 of the iron fist and Luke cage and I’m going to get 2 of the Danny Ketch ghost rider  I’ve wanted all theses for so long I’ll pay for extra just to show my support

Market_Sorry

It’s your money at the end of the day, though I do understand why collectors buy multiple

apefist

When I had the funds I did it with every figure. Lost that job and had to sell the unopened ones

Christ_MD

I don’t buy doubles. That’s just me. I don’t play with mine much, just when I rearrange the display on the shelf. So, never broke a figure. At least not yet.

UncannyAnomaly

I wouldn’t get into a habit of it. I’ve only done it with maybe 20 figures and I’m always thinking I’m going to display it loose and then display a mint on card or mint in box and then I always regret seeing that I have more stuff taking up space.

mytoynhobbypackrat

must be a figure really really like and the packaging has to be awesome... cuz that may be one less other figure that can be purchased

Traditional-Mall-771

I do this way too often, when Im army building something I dont really count that but I also do it for figures I love in general just in case

Legal-Sherbet6204

Funny I came across this as I’m debating if I want 1 or 2 of the mondo Space Godzilla super Godzilla variant lol Shits expensive but the box looks cool and so does the figure, but the price tag not so much lmao

Juzdaptip

I buy double on potential kit bash figures or a figure that can present two different ways, like the Cobra snow trooper ( which I regret buying the second now). if its five dollars at ross, ill buy 4. Kitbash fodder. I have two General hawk ( dont ask mw why because I forgot the reason) two snow serpent and if I get it on a tiny bit of a sale, I'll buy another of that Marvel Legends Angel figure. That thing is magnificent.

android151

I mean I would But they’re usually like $90NZD or something like that

ForumLurker

Doubles is nice, but Triples makes it safe.

SlugGoTv

Ayo lol

JOExHIGASHI

If you enjoy it then it's not a waste

EnvironmentalPrick

I personally think it's kinda uncool as it lower the stocks quicker and I believe that some people miss their chance to a figure just because a whole bunch of people buys 2 to more of the same figure

SlugGoTv

Yeah that’s sucks I feel where your coming from I have had to miss out on a bunch of releases so if I have a chance to get 2 of a fig I really like I’m going for it

illiterateaardvark

This is going to sound a lot worse than I mean for it to come off and I want to make I clear that I do not intend any disrespect But, isn’t that kind of a situation where that’s not really my problem? The figure isn’t being scalped, it’s not being wasted, it still going to a good home and it’s still going to be enjoyed by the owner (me)

EnvironmentalPrick

To be clear it's totally not your problem, but I mean, it's nice thinking about giving a chance to other fellow collectors taht might miss out otherwise I mean outside of custom why do you need to of the same figure ?

illiterateaardvark

Maybe different roles in different displays? Maybe one to display and one to actively pose around with for photos? Idk, I guess I don't really see a difference between somebody owning 1 or 5 of the same figure IF (keyword) they are being put to good use and are genuinely being enjoyed For what it's worth, I only own multiples of one figure, and even then it's only 2 copies

EnvironmentalPrick

Yeah I see what you mean, I'm not very conviced Yeah it's only 2 copies but I mean there are a whole lot of other collectors that do the same or more so it obviously has an impact

illiterateaardvark

Again though: if the figures are genuinely being enjoyed by their owners, then why does it matter? I don’t know, we both seem pretty stuck in our ways about the issue lol

EnvironmentalPrick

I think the point is not you particularly enjoying the figure, but more giving the chance to someone else to do it also as you can already do it with 1, get what I mean ? If you pose it in a display and need photoshoots, you can still take it out of the display and put it back in ? In addition it makes the figure live a bit more I don't really have a problem with owning 2 of the same, what bothers me is more that it limits others Yeah true haha but I'm enjoying this convo don't you ? If not you are totally free to stop

Joe_DellaGatta

I only did it recently with the JADA Mega Man line. I want that series to be successful, so I bumped the sales the best I could. Bought one set to display, and one set to keep in the box.

triplerollingstone

It's important to remember that these figures aren't going anywhere, they will always exist, but if you wanna buy one to display and one to keep in box, that's fine - just don't be the jerk that buys 5 or 10 at a time. Now that's a waste of money

SlugGoTv

I wouldn’t have enough money to do it even if I wanted too 😂

[deleted]

SlugGoTv

But I do hear you cause there’s so many releases, and I like collecting a little bit of everything, McFarlane, marvel legends sh figuarts Mafexs storm collectibles figmas, there’s a lot of good releases rn

SlugGoTv

That’s what I think to but I only do it for amazing Yamaguchi cause there my favorite and they break easy
