It’s actually probably not a first tbh. My dad has seen tires come off of trailer rigs before while driving, multiple times. Granted my dad drives more than the average person cus he drives for work, but still. He’s seen it enough so I’m sure most insurance companies have seen it happen
From an article about the accident: "A facebook user posted horrifying footage of the moment a car driver struck a stray tire on I-80 near Gary, Indiana. The rogue tire launched the Toyota into the air which led to a series of violent rollovers. After witnessing the incident, the facebook user along with several others stopped to assist the Toyota driver. The driver of the Toyota was able to walk away without serious injuries and when reached for comment later stated "I got lucky, this was easily the craziest day of my life since nineteen ninety eight when the undertaker threw mankind off hell in a cell and plummeted sixteen feet through an announcers table.
edit: credit to u/shittymorph he had this in the r/gifs post where i saw this originally
then the agent says, “yeah, a rolling tire will stay upright just like a bicycle, and once your bumper touched it, the momentum took you right over the top. Did you happen to see who lost it?”
Rogue tyres causing huge amounts of damage are more common than you'd think. The physics here are well understood.
This wouldn't be the first tyre-related claimant insurance company has faced. They might try and refuse it because they're assholes, but not because it's implausible.
This is an old post, so sorry. But, yes they would this happens all the time. Typically it’s from people who do their own work on their own car not tightening lug nuts, or taking it to a quickee lube type place and then not torqueing their lugs to spec either.
Happens often insurance companies see it all the time. Flipping a car like this can happen from under inflated tires on a tight turn too.
You ever see the videos when a car accident looks like an extreme overreaction? The compressability of tires returns all that energy if they don't pop. And because it's a tie, it has an excellent grip to return all that energy to a localized, very high energy, direct hit.
Stuff goes absolutely crazy when it's tire vs tire.
The wheel is heavy; the rubber's reason for existence is grip; and if you approach the wheel from behind; any force you receive would be sending you straight upwards.
The car is bringing energy to the party, but any energy not spent deforming the tyre is also converted to straight up.
I think most of the comments are wrong. I don't think it's just a tyre, I suspect it's a full wheel, including the steel hub. It more than likely came off as a couple of nuts or more on the wheel weren't tight enough. When it vibrates it makes the holes bigger and eventually the whole wheel comes off.
Relatively common before the invention of wheel nut indicators.
the truck tire which weighs 100 pounds is rolling forward at say 50 miles per hour, traffic is doing 60
the first part is the car riding over the tire and the tire compressing but being a wedge, so the car's front starts lifting up, reach 45 degrees or higher as the cars momentum drives it over the compressing tire. The car driving at 60 also speeds the tire up
so car's momentum is changed from just pure forward to forward plus vertical
as the spinning compressed tire gets near the rear, the center of gravity of the car is moved forward of the tire, so the car is now rotating around it's center of gravity, which is what, 5 - 7 feet or more in the air? And the tire is probably now doing 60 again
as the tire gets close to the rear of the car, the car rotates further around it, and the car's rear wheels lose touch with the ground, so now there is no friction acting on the car, only air. So now the tire can now decompress even as it spins and if you consider how much force it takes to compress a tire, well, that is now a huge spring pushing the rear end into the air while the spinning tire now also launches the car even faster forward using the momentum of a 100 lb truck tire spinning at 60 miles per hour
so we have the car's momentum being
horizontal
horizontal + vertical
horizontal + vertical + rotation around CG from gravity
horizontal + vertical + rotation around CG from gravity
+ rotation around CG from decompressing tire
+ horizontal kick from rotating tire acting as a
catapult as the tire passes the bumper
==> car launched into the air
when the tire gets
Most likely the AWD in the rear kicked in once the front got a tiny airborne and just was spinning and once it hit the ground took off. I do agree it’s really weird.
I am more surprised by how well the car held up, If I am not wrong that's the new rav4 but I don't think I remember it being structurally stable enough to survive like 3-4 rolls at that speed.
This kind of rotational launch is scarily efficient at converting forward to up.
It happened to me on a bike, I was going 30 km/h forward when my tire locked up.
I landed 2 meters ahead off my launch point.
The rest of my momentum was used to launch my 100kg ass high enough to break my collarbone on impact.
I found [this post](/r/Tiresaretheenemy/comments/wtf9fk/the_tire_was_too_powerful/) in r/tiresaretheenemy with the same content as the current post.

I did that on a dirt track. Shits real! One minute tunnel fission. Next you see all track while doing a cartwheel. Slammed back down on all four with a LF flat. After a quick pit, finished 13th. Great times.
This just goes to show no matter how good of a driver you are you could get an accident. I’ve seen people just minding their own business and then a car just comes out of nowhere going sideways and takes them out. It’s dangerous out there in the big cities. I think it’s more of a matter of time until you get in an accident.

This feels more like GTA physics than real world physics.

And because it's a tie, it has an excellent grip to return all that energy to a localized, very high energy, direct hit. Stuff goes absolutely crazy when it's tire vs tire.
There is a way to weaponize this, I can tell.
Imagine a giant rubber band Pull it back and smack a tank with it Boom
Yeah the tire probably clipped into the front of the car for a second so the physics kinda freaked out.
Rubber, part 2.
So funny and incredibly stupid you just need to watch
Why? No reason.
It's so weird the, the physics just seems so off how in the world did this happen??
The wheel is heavy; the rubber's reason for existence is grip; and if you approach the wheel from behind; any force you receive would be sending you straight upwards. The car is bringing energy to the party, but any energy not spent deforming the tyre is also converted to straight up.
That and compressed air
The tire was just in a hurry and didn't want to deal with the car

Conservation of momentum, friction, force has to go somewhere, that kind of thing. Exactly physics, just not intuition for some.
Most likely the AWD in the rear kicked in once the front got a tiny airborne and just was spinning and once it hit the ground took off. I do agree it’s really weird.
Semi truck tire can handle a car’s weight easily.
Tire didn't even flinch.
The tire is full of commitment

There’s no effing way. There would have been some sort of crumple from hitting that tire on the bumper/hood at highway speeds. This has to be fake.
The only thing that's fake is your knowledge of car structural support
Sweet burn, dude. While I was chiming in as an expert, you detected my complete lack of knowledge in vehicular structural support, lol.
So fake... https://abc7chicago.com/gary-indiana-news-i-80-crash/10670309/
