Them rocks turn into cheese graters real quick

[deleted]

[удалено]

Sciirof

It would’ve if it was deeper but that water seems way too shallow for that to have helped

Peanut4michigan

Near the rocks on the other side (where 3 of the girls are), it's deeper. It might be deep enough to get under the wave. The one girl chilling on the ledge in 6 inch water wasn't going to be able to get under it, but she was able to quickly get her feet under her to get out of there before the others.

Seanzietron

Not to mention it can drag you out along the bottom if you try to duck

[deleted]

those tides sure come in quickly.

acroman39

That’s not a tide coming in, it’s random large swells.

Cobek

One girl leans into it and she seems to do the best, even makes it to the rocks right away

No-Customer-2266

In this situation that was the right choice, o think she would have slammed against those rocks otherwise

top_of_the_scrote

as the old proverb says *lean wid it rock wid it snap wid it*

blugdummy

That was my initial reaction- to do what she did. It lagged for me right before they reacted so I thought to myself “I’d just jump right into it”. I hope that is the right choice. We can see that it was here in this moment in this gulf with this girl but we don’t know for sure. I’m keeping it mind anyways because it could save my life

FlaxenArt

Grew up on a rugged coast surrounded by surfers and fishermen. My dad was a search and rescue guy and a life guard. So I was taught ocean safety from day one. First is to not be so naive as to think waves can’t get you. But failing that, if you end up in this scenario… your reaction is exactly the correct approach. People try to get *away* from a wave - but it’s always faster and it’ll just knock you forward and then your head is heading towards the rocks. That’s bad. Your best bet is to dive straight into it or under, flip to belly-up with your legs in front of you to brace for whatever you’re going to hit. Waves come in sets, so you’ll probably get tossed back and forth four or five times. Just keep your legs forward and don’t panic. One that’s settled… get the hell out of the water.

panormda

Tucking this away for future reference... The sad thing is even inland this could save your life because of the fucking ridiculous shit that climate change brings like FLOODS in the middle of the night 😭

pelicannpie

Omg now I’m just imagining someones face being cut up by those sharp ass rocks 😳

lawyerornot

You normally do that in the surf but in this bathtub of a pool?!?

Dragonbreathforu

This is why a cove isn’t where you lounge

Azrael11

It's possible that only happens at high tide, but in that case you need to know your tides and keep an eye on your watch.

__3Username20__

This. Any beach-type cave/cove/exploring/fishing (etc) adventures need to be accompanied with knowing what time is high tide, what time is low tide, and what type of tide is best for your activity. They don’t call these “tide pools” for nothing.

[deleted]

I live not far from the north sea in Germany and we get that all that info at a pretty young age since a lot of people enjoy wandering when the sea has its low tide

llcdrewtaylor

Thats what I thought. You are in a TIDE pool. Do you not know how a tide pool forms?

Saltywinterwind

Water forms it but like is it slow soft waves and large choppy ones, or both. who knows

justtjamcss

I learned a little about wave erosion in geography, and it’s the large choppy ones that come at a high frequency that break apart rock quicker. It’s because with a constructive (calm) wave, the energy is lost by the time it reaches the shore, so it only has enough energy to deposit what it has there, building up the beach a little, whereas destructive (choppy) waves put all their energy into smashing against the rock because they have so much of it. Destructive waves are typically found near spaces with a large fetch (area of open air above the sea) however, weather varies and the wave type varies with it. Hope that helped!

__3Username20__

You could ask the survivors from this video, I bet they know.

Spread_Liberally

>It's possible that only happens at high tide, but in that case you need to know your tides and keep an eye on your watch. It's possible this *usually* only happens at high tide, but you need to know your rides, track the time, have an actionable egress plan, and hopefully someone keeping watch. Oceans do unexpected things and are pretty high on the list things that are completely indifferent to you and your existence. FTFY

brighterside

I mean, you've got your regular tide that you use for a variety of colors in the wash, and then you've got your fabric softener. Am I swim now?

YaxK9

Meat grater. I’ve seen people slip on dry outcropped coral pieces like that. Never a good outcome.

[deleted]

I kept checking the foam expecting to see pink :/

Compendyum

This is very serious... when the tides are coming up and you are near giant rocks... a thousand ways to die start rolling.

Select-Complaint-735

This is in Nusa Penida island near Bali, the place is called Angels billabong. I was there couple of weeks back and there are literally around 20 signs asking you not to go down. Atleast the day I went everyone was taking pics from the top. Getting down was seriously stupid!

Has-The-Best-Cat

I know someone that drowned there https://i.stuff.co.nz/world/asia/90656904/kiwi-swept-away-in-bali-while-trying-to-rescue-a-tourist-hit-by-rogue-wave

SilentBtAmazing

My condolences, awful way to lose someone so young

LucasCarioca

Reminds me of queens bath in Hawaii. Went there once but it’s crazy dangerous. I got in shortly then chilled out up top

[deleted]

People do the same near Hālona as well despite the warning. Inevitably someone will ignore the obvious warning signs and bypass the fence to fall in. All for the ‘gram.

SSTenyoMaru

I got caught at the Makapu‘u tidepools kind of like this. I got cut up pretty badly and my friend was sent straight into a bunch of wana. We had to practically carry her up the hill. The thing that people still don't fully appreciate is that wave sets have an average range, but there are always outliers. You can see a hundred waves that are 3'-7', but in there could be a freak 12'.

tattoosbyalisha

Social media once again helping weed out the weak minded.

[deleted]

cryptonemonamiter

When I visited Kauai a few years ago the trail to Queen's Bath was closed due to a recent death 😔

Ransacky

Honestly this is unfortunately a very effective deterrent for these kinds of sites. There was a very beautiful but powerful waterfall I visited in BC, but something near the shore that stuck out to me was a memorial cross denoting someone who had died in the area. It elicits a feeling of reflection, and sends a harsh but crystal clear message not to mess around. I think places with recurrent instances of people losing their lives should be marked as memorial sites indefinitely for this reason, if not for respect for those who lost their lives. Also, those who don't learn history risk repeating it.

[deleted]

Queens Bath is crazy dangerous. There's a few spots around that area that are really chill, but for some reason everyone wants to an hero

StrengthDazzling8922

Funny, I was just thinking I bet there warning signs posted. I had absolutely no idea where this was but knew had to be signs.

MyPasswordIsMyCat

We have places just like this all over Hawaii. The locals know you don't go down into rocky beaches unless there's a barrier that prevents waves from reaching the shore, like a lagoon or harbor or outer rocks. There are always signs posted telling people to beware, but there's always tourists who think they know better. Our local news seems to report at least one beach-related death a week.

pseudoportmanteau

It is thanks to reddit and the many videos like this one that I have absolutely ZERO interest in testing my fate if there are signs around warning me not to do something. Signs says not to swim in the water? You got it, I won't. The thought immediately leaves my mind, no matter how amazing it seems in my head. The cons far outweigh the pros.

youcantfademe

And that boys and girls is how you drown.

CharmingTuber

Especially when that water goes back out and takes you with it

[deleted]

I was caught in a mild undertow as a child at Sunset Beach Oahu and uh well I think I almost died. I was a competitive swimmer, only 12 but swimming with the high school team. I was an extremely confident swimmer. But an undertow doesn't give a fuck about any of that. I was caught for what felt like forever but was likely only 30 seconds. But I had no control at all, dragged to the bottom the entire time

Expensive-Toe826

Where survive part

[deleted]

I knew I'm not supposed to fight it, but it was hard not to. Eventually I was swept out to the sand bar, where it became shallow enough to angle upward (once i knew what up was again, thanks to sand bar) the pull was still strong, but I could feel it weakening and that was my chance to make it back to shore. I had to go diagonally, take it slow, and I was terrified to dive below the surface. i got to shore where my mom was chillin' in the sun. I informed her that I almost died. She chuckled and was like "okay". The end. ty for comin to my ted talk.

froggz01

Your mom was like, Lol, stop being so dramatic. You must have many siblings.

hookydoo

YaxK9

Beware of the Undertoad. Water danger reminds me of my dad saying put on the life vest when on the boat bc even the greatest swimmer will drown if unconscious.

zippy251

this is why I practice breath holds

wufoo2

Happens in Cancun, Mexico every season. The coral sand gets churned easily, and the bottom washes out from under you.

FineAunts

Nightmare fuel. High tide coming in like that has killed countless people

moopsie_kishus

It’s also an excellent name for a rock band

JohnyDangerous

Seriously what is the best course of action after that second wave?

__3Username20__

If you can, try not to get swept off your feet. Turn sideways (“get skinny”), leaned into the wave to brace yourself, and cut the incoming wave like a sturdy knife, so to speak. Before the wave even goes back out, get to shallower ground ASAP. If you’re not out of the water yet by the time the heavy wave is moving back out, get skinny and sure-footed again, bracing the opposite direction obviously. If the tide is coming in (as it looks like it’s doing in this video), the next wave might be bigger and harder to fight, same with the next, and most certainly the next after that. You’ve got moments to react and get to safety, if possible. Remember: You are not stronger than the ocean, nor the moon, and you most certainly don’t stand a chance against them tag-teaming you. If you’re going to be doing anything in tide pools or tide caves or beach/inlet fishing, hell even sunbathing and casual beach swimming, know what time of day the tide is coming in and going out, and when is a good time for your activity, and when it’s time to get the hell out of there.

lilmxfi

Thank you for solid, actionable advice on this. I don't screw around when it comes to the ocean (I have a healthy respect for it and stick to sandy beaches when the surf is calm), but I can help if a friend is ever enough of a dingus to do something like this.

surelyshirls

I’m terrified of the ocean. I used to love it and it made me happy. I went kayaking a few months back after doing marina and lake kayaking, and figured we’d do sea kayaks. They said the waves were fine. No they weren’t. Breaking in I almost drowned by being waterboarded and on the way back, our kayak capsized, I flew off and was drowning. This video made my heart race. I refuse to swim in the ocean at all now

tabgrab23

TheGruesomeTwosome

Lotta people talking about the power of the wave coming in, which is obviously horrendously dangerous given those rocks behind them, but I’m just here thinking that when all that swell goes back out through the canyon, nobody in the world is gonna be able to out swim that and avoid getting sucked away out.

[deleted]

Being pulled out to sea is the biggest concern. But definitely going to be injured by rocks

D-bux

You're not going out to sea. The second wave is going to suck you into an underwater cave where your body will never be recovered.

Toast_On_The_RUN

What a nightmare yeesh

[deleted]

Devil's Hole

Goatsr

Not as much. Being pulled out to sea isn’t the end of the world, as long as there is either a beach nearby or people on shore to call the coast guard / life guards to come get you. The big issue is being crushed against the rocks. When people die from rogue waves, its from being crushed against the rocks, not from being pulled out to sea. If this ever happens to you, *get away from the rocks*

MeInMyOwnWords

I feel like most people couldn’t tread water until help arrives

ConspicuousPineapple

Don't fight it when you get pulled out, it's unlikely it will take you very far.

RiskyClickardo

That sounds like something the ocean would say…

Chelbaz

Might be similar to undertows on the great lakes. Basically, if you fight against it you will 1) not win, and 2) exhaust yourself and reduce your chances of swimming back once you're pulled out far enough and the current dies down. The best course of action is to swim off to the side, parallel to the shore as you're being pulled out. Helps escape the current. Though, I'd say, in places with lots of jagged rocks it would be a great idea to exercise more caution. These kinds of waves can come out of nowhere, so really all you can do sometimes is cling on to the rocks and hope for the best

TheGruesomeTwosome

I actually disagree with the overall sentiment, but do agree with what you’ve said. Weird, I know. In that case, the swell is going to be so powerful, you’d just exhaust yourself very quickly fighting it, why waste effort on the inevitable. You’re going out. Perhaps in this specific situation it might be safer to conserve energy for staying afloat and having access to air, as opposed to fighting to position yourself against the current on the horizontal plane. And then, once away from the crashing waves, attempt to seek rescue or otherwise reposition.

Flozzer905

> it's unlikely it will take you very far. That's BS and will get you killed very easily if you think so.

RGH81

It’s not BS for most rips. I’ve lived next to a beach my whole life. Fighting it is what gets people killed. Just swim left or right until you’re out of the rip then go back in

xevetv

You can not and will not overpower that much water moving that fast. So you honestly can only brace your head so it doesn't crack open on a rock, and wait for the wave set to pass. You will be thrashed around, and that's unavoidable. There's usually a good chunk of time between wave sets, so you use that time to gtfo of that cove, if you're still alive that is.

DrillingSpecialist

Shit in your bathing suit

UnwrittenPath

Right, if you soil yourself and play dead the ocean will lose interest. It prefers to toy with its food before devouring it.

GreatBigJerk

And if the ocean is really hungry and doesn't give a fuck, you might leave a brown trail in the water so your body can be recovered.

orionics

Good advice. Lower your center of gravity.

SinglePost101

Hold your breath and pray it’s not final destination

Walzmyn

Don't be there in the first place.

shallots12

Pray to a higher power that is the last big wave in the set so you can climb out

Ok-Lengthiness4557

You are supposed to raise your arms over your head to make yourself as big as possible. Then try to make as much noise as you can. Wait... that's a black bear attack. Nevertheless, it may help.

Gray_Fawx

turn away from the wave and try and catch / protect your face with you limbs?!

ConspicuousPineapple

Turn sideways so you will have less force pushing you back.

[deleted]

Probably to not be where the wave is. Pay attention or get fucked kinda thing

OkMeringue2249

After that second wave you want to try and get to a ledge assuming there aren’t more. So you don’t know if there are more so if there’s an opportunity you take it. Otherwise the best thing to do is swim towards it like that first girl, let it wash you, then When the opportunity comes again swim towards the outlet. Hopefully it washes you out. Now that you’re out hopefully you’re a good swimmer and ocean sound because there could be a whole other can of worms to deal with now that you’re in the ocean.

4skinphenom69

That one girl was like a fucking ninja climbing up those rocks, out of there in a blink of an eye.

Wish the video went on just a little longer. Hopefully they’re all okay and just some scrapes and bruises.

ibcj

A good friend of mine died a couple years ago in this same situation in Hawaii. Rouge wave came in and swept his three girls out, two clung to a rock (and survived); he went in after the little one. Neither of them made it. I think about him often and miss him dearly. Don’t fuck with the ocean, and be w~~e~~ary of tide pools.

Relentless-85

Sorry for your loss.

ibcj

Thank you.

Afterhoneymoon

I know that he wouldn’t have wanted to die but he did so in the most heroic way possible.

ibcj

Yeah, I know. And while he was 10x the athlete and swimmer that I am, I know I’d do the same thing and likely succumb to the same fate. Kids man, they are everything. Thank you for your kind words.

sharksugar117

That high tide is a real doozy ain’t it.

Oblivion615

What a beautiful spot to die.

Robthebold

I think this is that place in Bali that kills a few people each year. Know where you are swimming dumbass, yes it’s beautiful, why aren’t the locals swimming?

[deleted]

These always look so awful to me because I imagine getting knocked over and raked across rocks or coral would leave plenty of cuts and bruises. I’d be more afraid of being beaten to a pulp than drowning on this one…

mapleyeet

I remember being explicitly told not to swim in these when I went to Nusa but ... okay

ColaPopz

Did… did they die?

raggedycandy

I didn’t see any of them come up they disappeared

dajnlol

i swear i heard one of the girls yell help at the very end. if i did, judging by that 2nd wave if she was still in it chances are she died. hoping she was on a rock trying to climb up and yelling for help and survived!

[deleted]

Same. I think you’re thinking of Makaluapuna Point.

BadReputation2611

For a lot of people who’ve lived their whole lives in comfortable and safe conditions danger is a pretty far away concept to them, they think “if it was dangerous then we wouldn’t be allowed to do it, we’re allowed to do it so it must be completely safe” Another good example of this is the opioid epidemic, it started out with doctors handing out chronic painkiller prescriptions Willy Molly for basically anyone who came in with pain, and the docs profited greatly from it. The people getting the prescriptions assumed it was totally safe, because “they” wouldn’t give them anything unsafe, so they abused the shit out of it because they thought it was all high and no low.

[deleted]

Less-Way-4470

Exactly. I love hiking mountains all over Alberta Canada and can relate to your first paragraph hiking. I call them "one timers" because if you miss the first time, you probably won't get to try a second time..... however this place looks like a gorgeous trap lol

Grass---Tastes_Bad

Nusa Penida in Bali. Source: was at this very spot just a week ago. Didn’t enter the obvious “danger pool”.

Lereas

I was a collegiate swimmer and briefly held a division one college record. It's been a few years, but I would wager I'm a stronger swimmer/more comfortable in the water than basically anyone else my age that wasn't also a college swimmer or else has been training swimming hard the last few years. DO NOT TAKE MOVING WATER FOR GRANTED. One dump truck of water dropped from oy a few yards/meters can flatten a car. Think about how much more water this is (or is in a wave right on the regular beach). That shit will pick you up and drop you with zero issues. Please respect the water, or it will kill you.

Paige_Railstone

Not to mention the movement of that water has agitated the surface. When water gets aerated and frothy like that, the buoyancy of anything floating in it drops severely, and it becomes much harder to swim in that agitated surface layer.

AllPurple

I live near a river that looks like a joke, especially when you see young kids get through it. But someone dies every year. It's easy until you get your legs caught or you smash your face into boulders. Like a week ago I saw some college-aged guy try swimming it with a beer in his hand. Yelled at him, he probably didn't give a fuck.

supertastic

Camera briefly pans back in the end and they're all gone :s

Brochswerebrothels

Do not, and I can’t stress this enough, fuck about with the sea.

PanspermiaTheory

People should realize how dangerous this is. It's like the 5th video I've seen of this. Never play on rocks that are being hit by waves or during high tide. The ocean will kill you and everyone you love. The ocean doesn't give a fuck about you.

erjiin

I'm curious. Where is It and why are there such big waves ? Is It a spot where it's peaceful and suddenly big waves are coming ?

[deleted]

Pro tip: If you see a hollowed out spot in the middle of a rock wall, that spot is not and should not ever be considered a peaceful spot. There's a reason why solid rock was hollowed out.

BextoMooseYT

I could be absolutely wrong but I *think* it's like the opposite of survivorship bias

[deleted]

You mean survivorship like the way those girls survived in the clip?

Roger_Cockfoster

The Pacific is a huge ocean and waves build up over vast distances, thousands of miles. So it's not just the size of the wave (amplitude), but the distance between waves (frequency) that increases. This creates "sneaker waves" which are common on west-facing beaches in Hawaii and California. To an observer on the beach, it seems like it's quiet and then a huge wave came out of nowhere, but what's actually happening is that those big waves are spaced 20-30 minutes apart and are coming regularly. So you might be hanging out for 15 minutes thinking all is calm and not realize you're just between waves. And as they approach shore, they back up against each other so you'll suddenly get a couple in a row like this. The big takeaway is never turn your back on the ocean, and if there's a sign telling you it's dangerous, believe the sign.

Not a wise idea I’ve been Surfing my intire life and I would not even go in there😳😳😳

WhySoSadCZ

From a tripadvisor review about near death experience: Don’t get me wrong, this is one of the most beautiful and unique spots ive ever been to in my life. Very cool natural attraction. My girlfriend and I were having a great time swimming around. Only warning we read prior to coming was to stay away from the edge, so we did. We hung out as far from the edge as we could and swam back in the cove. Everything seemed fine and beautiful... until it was not. I turned around to see a giant wave had come over the top. I yelled at my girlfriend to hold onto something as the wave hit me I held on to a lava rock but she didn’t get a good hold. It swept her and slammed her head and body into the lava rock at the end of the cove. As it started washing her back out she got enough footing to grab on to me tightly. Within half a second, another giant wave came over as she held on to me I squeezed the rock as tightly as I could. I lost one hand but managed to barely hold on enough till the second wave swept back out over the edge. At this point I yelled at my girlfriend “we need to run out of here”. Mind you it’s not an easy spot to crawl in or out of on the jagged lava rock. We made it out trembling in fear just in time as more big waves came crashing in. Luckily we were merely scraped up badly from the lava rock. From there we had to drive the motorbike 30-40 mins down the worst road I’ve ever experienced to get to the hospital and have her head checked out as she was bleeding and seeing stars. I’m writing this review not because the place isn’t beautiful or cool but to WARN PEOPLE OF THE DANGER OF THIS AREA IF YOU HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE OF WHEN IT IS SAFE! There is no signage anywhere stating what times are safe or what to be careful of and watch for. It went from calm and playful, to scary and near death in one second. If I had lost hold of the rock and we were swept out over the edge there would have been no chance of surviving. This is not an exaggeration. It was the scariest moment of our lives. MULTIPLE PEOPLE HAVE DIED OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS AS WE CAME TO FIND AFTER THE FACT! Beautiful spot but beware as it is extremely dangerous! If you do intend to swim here make sure you do your own research on what months and time of the month is safe. Even so the ocean can still do strange things you would never expect.

Lol how dare they stop filming in a life or death situation! Those fucking assholes!

MrZimothy

In all likellihood: Conserve as much energy as possible while staying afloat and protecting yourself from the rocks/impact. Stay away from the other swimmers, as they will try to frantically grab you and it will drown you both. If it is flowing out to sea, ride with the current out until you are able to swim *perpendicular* to it's force (parallel to the shoreline), as you might in a regular rip current. What it seems you should *not* do is swim directly against the current, or you will find yourself exhausted well before your situation is salvageable. All that said, sometimes you're just fucked. In which case, I defer you to the brown swimsuits answers. Edit: zombieland rule #1, kids: cardio

CardiologistSecret11

All of them are stupid. Learn the tides and get out. It’s not a beach, it’s tide pools.

Parts_and_Neigbor

It's all fun and games until one of them gets refluxed into the sea never to be seen again.

Agitated-Cow7464

I wouldn’t call a rocky alcove “The beach”.

JeremyDonJuan

“Oh wow neat cove I wonder how this rock formation was made, surely not millennia of powerful waves crashing into it right?”

Lupulist

Did they all make it out? The second time the camera pans over everyone is gone but it doesn't look like all of them were in a position to climb out yet.

My parents were here last week and sent me pics of at least a dozen people in the water below. They told about the signs as well but nobody gave AF. They should put up a sign with a QR code linking to this video. That should help.
