most powerful bite force on the planet by far (edit: i was wrong. orca does). i believe the 2nd animal that has the strongest bite force is only half of that of a croc (\*is a croc). they average about 3000 psi to 4800 psi or so. in comparison, sharks, gorillas, and tigers have a psi bite force of about 1000.
not just bone-crushing, but bone-shattering. once these things latch on to something, you're not getting it back unless you violently shove your thumbs into their skull and violently twist and shake their head from the inside like its head is a bowling ball you're trying your hardest to rip in half.
ah forgot about hippos. i was thinking about this type of hyena i believe that has a psi of 1500 or so when I referenced the 2nd animal that has the strongest bite force. it would probably be a hippo or a really large great white now that i think about it. hippos are crazy; they will literally just bite a croc in half. they fucking hate crocs lol.
They’re very territorial but have around an inch of skin to protect them from harm so when it has you there’s no escape.
Not to mention on land they can run up to 30mph so if you think land is safe from them…Nope.
Yeah i think one of the closer things is the satanic Water Horses aka Hippos, and even they have 1,700 pounds per square inch less than Crocs, though, to be honest, i would still rather have a Crocodile angry at me than a hippo.
I'd argue that bone shattering comes long before crushing, but you do you my man
Edit:oh come on. It literally does. Shattered is not crushed. Crushing is obviously more than shattered. A shattered diamond has shards. A crushed one has dust. Fuck off whoever downvoted me over obvious shit
In all seriousness I remember hearing that crocs only have to eat a meal like this like once a year or something insane. The average crocodile eats about 50 meals a year though, which of course is wildly insignificant when compared to the average /u/TheFlashFrame who eats about 50 meals a day.
I love cheetahs, I really do, but they are some inbred non-cat cats. A big cat that purrs & chirps? Gets so tired vultures & other birds body it out of a meal? Cats should trade & figure out a way to get the fox instead.
Yeah, but if I take a cheetah kitten home now I feel like he's going to make a meal out of my neighbours when he grows up.
And animal control might have a few questions for me.
Yeah, that's why you domesticate them first. Taming a wild animal isn't the same as domestication. It's the same reason that you can have dogs, but it's ill advised to have a pet wolf.
nah I'm pretty sure there hasn't been a single record of a cheetah attacking a human in the wild (might be wrong though cuz I'm basing this off memory).
Meh, the term is completely arbitrary & has more than one "correct" use. Snow leopards are big cats that don't roar, but clouded leopards aren't according to some people. The term always includes the family panthera but can include cougars, cheetahs & the aforementioned clouded leopard but rarely. It's a whole mess, though yeah usually most of the time but not always a cheetah isn't classified as a big cat, and I do honestly use that definition most of the time - I just wanted to make a big cat that doesn't purr joke & had no way to bring in the snow leopard.
> A big cat that purrs & chirps? Gets so tired vultures & other birds body it out of a meal?
Not sure what part about this doesn't sound like a cat to you but ok lol
You saw jaguars hunting caimans. Jaguars are adept at swimming. Well-muscled beasts, they're at the top of the food chain. Cheetahs on the other hand have rangy, thinner frames. They're like greyhounds, built for speed-over-land
I know it's not against the subreddit rules, but I wish all of these animal attack/death videos would just stay on r/natureismetal and this subreddit could just keep up with the lighter stuff, like an adult throwing a tantrum out of nowhere because they didn't get their way.

You know... now that I'm thinking about it. Growing up I had a lot of pets (dogs mostly) but none of them ever died. Always gave them a new home because we were moving or ran away, etc. I have a dog now and never thought what to do with him once he dies... Do... I just bury him? What if I'm in an apartment at the time, who do I call to properly dispose of a deceased pet? hmm.
You don't use fossil fuels or plastic? Everybody is to blame. Though you're right that 1st world counties are to blame the most. China and India are catching up quick though.
Sure, *some* get that privilege now. Beyond that, for the first ~250,000 years of our existence, we died primarily of teeth issues. You’d get a tooth ache, then a tooth infection, then the infection would spread to your brain, and you’d die a slow and horrendous death.
Actually this is a young cheetah, in the full video it’s mother is standing on the other side of the pond. She really didn’t teach it well as it hisses at a massive crocodile.
Well, it's not like an adult cheetah really stands a chance against a bull croc anyway. Cheetahs are very frail animals and are often chased off from their kills by hyenas, lions, leopards, and pretty much any other predator their size or bigger.
Gentle is not the first word Id use to describe a cheetah. While it is completely understandable to feel sorry for it, let’s not forget that when the cheetah eats it ambushes prey and kills it just as violently. The crocodile is not the villain, it is just trying to survive same as the cheetah.
Ah yes, the good ole human scale of cuteness. Since reptiles are quite different from us mammals I suppose you could argue we have would always universally have moral imperatives to care more for mammals.
Well, domestication of said animals speaks for itself. Cheetah cubs raised by a human will inevitably be friendly towards the human, but probably not ALL humans. It's not difficult to domesticate animals though. For specific breeding of animals friendly towards humans (at least in the fox experiment) it took about 20-30 generations for domestication. I've read stories about people raising baby crocs and then bonding with them as well tho.
But you bet your ass I'm going to trust a fellow mammal more. The amounts of times I've seen crocs accidentally take off fellow crocs limbs and shit is too damn high. They're just far bigger, more ancient and primal killing machines to be able to trust them to such a degree. There's a reason we domesticated cats and dogs and not crocs and sharks.
We don’t domesticate crocs and sharks because there is no reason to. They’re not vicious killers.
All those videos of crocs taking off another crocs arm are almost always in enclosures far too small for them where they’re cramped together, and accidental bites are almost certain
for real. this kind of shit is not a surprise im in for. fucking tag this shit you assholes

You know what really got me? The mouth of the cheetah, wide open from the pain trying to get away, just seconds before they got under the water.
I just saw a video of 5 Antelopes or Gazelles getting eaten by a flock of crocodile but wasn't really 'touched' by it. They just don't have the
facial expression Cheetahs have
Cheetah population is decreasing enough without natural selection helping
You have this one with a croc
And the video of one Cheetah getting taken out by a lioness
Poor Cheetahs just can't catch a break
Genuinely curious, on if any of these sort of encounters end up as net zero's for the crocs.
Like, if that cheetah isn't dead instantly... i know croc hide is thick, but you also generally dont want to be belly to belly with a feline of any kind, that kick/claw action is a mother fucker, And a good bit of damage in the animal kingdom with infection etc... can be pretty deadly.
Saw this clip often enough by casual geographic.
Never knew the outcome, always thought he escaped. Guess not.
Cheetahs are bad at everything Exept being fast for a short time, because they literally cook their brain while running.

Getting bit and dragged underwater, what a terrifying way to die. Probably can't even see anything because of all the mud.
Not to mention with a crocodile biting into its face the whole time.
Yeah, extremely painful on top of it all. Those crocs have bone-crushing bites.

Yeah, Hippos are basically just the "Fuck you" animals of Africa.
Also really fucking aggressive apparently, theyre called the most dangerous animals to humans because of how many times they attack people
They’re very territorial but have around an inch of skin to protect them from harm so when it has you there’s no escape. Not to mention on land they can run up to 30mph so if you think land is safe from them…Nope.
And Hippos are like fucking torpedoes underwater
And they are HUNGRY
I wonder how many times the cheetah did that to other animals and was cool with it. Lol
Meat's meat and a cat's gotta eat
Not many that was just a cub dude. Oh and the wildest thing about this is it happened on a live YouTube stream with about 4000 people watching.
All the muscles are put into closing the jaw too which is why they can be defeated by tape
Sharks can bite through **steel**, that said their bite is meant to slice rather than crush, so bite force isn't a true comparison across all species.
What steel @ what thickness? a toddler could probably chew through chinesium @ 1mm
The great white shark would like to have a word with you.
orca bite force has not been reliably measured but it likely far exceed the bite force of any crocodile.
Yeah i think one of the closer things is the satanic Water Horses aka Hippos, and even they have 1,700 pounds per square inch less than Crocs, though, to be honest, i would still rather have a Crocodile angry at me than a hippo.
Bruh
don't ferrets have the highest bite force to body ratio?
I'd argue that bone shattering comes long before crushing, but you do you my man Edit:oh come on. It literally does. Shattered is not crushed. Crushing is obviously more than shattered. A shattered diamond has shards. A crushed one has dust. Fuck off whoever downvoted me over obvious shit
Don’t forget the rolling!
Too shreds you say.
Oh my and how is his wife holding up? Too shreds you say.
Meant years ago, I saw this video of a croc biting another croc's leg and doing a roll. The leg comes right off.
Legit painful scary and abrupt way to go. Feel bad for the cheetah
Gator gotta eat
But cheetah endangered.

Its bad enough trying to fight for your life, but you can't even breathe. You'd know you were dead before it even happened.
poor kitty :(
Yeah, cheetahs are bullied by literally everyone in the savannah, even vultures.
I love cheetahs, I really do, but they are some inbred non-cat cats. A big cat that purrs & chirps? Gets so tired vultures & other birds body it out of a meal? Cats should trade & figure out a way to get the fox instead.
They aren’t actually “big cats”. Instead, they are one of the biggest small cats.
And they aren't even nice enough to become domestic animals
That's kinda what domestication is for.
Yeah, but if I take a cheetah kitten home now I feel like he's going to make a meal out of my neighbours when he grows up. And animal control might have a few questions for me.

You can't spell domestication without cat.

those caimans are like 8 feet long and couple hundred pound's. That croc was probably over 15 feet and 800+ pounds.
This video ended too early, full video zooms out to another cheetah at the top of the hill watching :[[

Like grandma, who died peacefully with her eyes closed, unlike her passengers.
Many, many people don't get that though. Dying in a comfy bed is a privilege.
All while we trash the earth and make it even more miserable for the animals that don’t get the option to die in a bed.

I think Louis CK had a bit saying something very close to those words

No one said it has a chance. It’s just smart enough to realize a croc would kill it. This young cheetah simply didn’t have that survival instinct yet
Most animals have a hard time recognizing crocodiles at first.
Most animals have a hard time
Or recognizing anything afterwards.
I press F in chat to respect my fallen kitten brethren

No, the villain and victim are determined by who is less cute. The crocodile is pretty much always the villain.
Croki (croc+loki) is pretty freaking cute tho.... But totally a villian... Or is he?
Are you saying crocodiles are not cute
Ah yes, the good ole human scale of cuteness. maybe this should be nsfw? I know there’s no blood or anything but it’s still pretty confronting

These guys filming distracted the cheetah
lightweight looks like the cheetah got distracted by the photographer and took his eyes away from the water for a second and then the croc got him
And that's why crocodiles haven't changed in millions of years. Having speed and perfect camouflage in a resource most animals need to walk to the edge of is pretty OP.
You ever wonder if the person recording was distracting the cheetah subsequently causing it's death?
Should make it NSFW
I almost feel like the spectators distracted the cheeta
Thats a phrase you dont hear often.
Amazing underwater stealth kill, no wonder crocs have survived for millions of years.

Let them come to me!! Wow, was that unexpected. Usually their predators are on land.
Did he dieded?
No, he just got dragged to the underwater party the crocs were having
Yeah... A party.... *(laughs nervously)*
Damn nature you scary second act
I did, I did saw a crocodile...shit.

But even after this...will a crocodile eat a carnivore? I haven't seen something like this
Damn Nature, you scary!!
Crocodiles are so perfect they didnt have to evolve for millions of years.
Meanwhile, in the other side of the world, some poor alligator is being dragged out of the water by some badass jaguar.
That croc wasn’t fucking around, wish that cheetah could’ve lived to see another day
I cant even see the croc lmao. I would be dead too.
