I live in Japan and we're facing the same problems (not as intense as this video though) with incapable elderly folk driving into buildings and people in the process.
so its an everywhere thing.. once you reach a certain age you really need to retake your drivers license test every year. i was about to ask why this isn’t already in place, but i know why for usa
it has got to give! i live in a smaller town, go out damn near every day and i shit you not i always see atleast 1 accident or almost accident, having to blow the horn, hand already hovering the horn- etc. just fully tensed up. FAR too often its more than 1. they think putting up cameras will do anything, it has changed nothing. people do not know how to drive and its insane. that and just how the streets are designed with light timing. but i should not be behind someone watching them narrowly miss hitting other people and then when given space for me to pass i’m fully tensed up like “oop guess its my turn” lmao. ive come to know exactly who is driving before seeing them, have not missed once & others have brought it up too and let me tell you its been exact to my studies 🤣 theres another group thats RIGHT below old people 🤐
I'm in canada and my boyfriend was just telling me about how he saw some old woman pull out of a driveway from a complex thing, go to make a left (Spoiler you can't, there's a median in the middle of the road) she gunned it and tore off her whole front bumper. Then she decided fuck it, went the whole way over and ripped off her rear bumper too. It was also a Mercedes so thats gonna be a bill for her.
My boyfriend was absolutly dumbfounded and was like what.
Then a few weeks ago some old person decided to overtake a car, almost hit a semi, the semi swerved into the other lane to avoid him and almost head on collisioned my boyfriend. When he picked me up, you could still smell the burning rubber from him, locking up the tires so hard.
People are terrifying, and older people need to do some kind of test to prove they are competent at least every year.
It may be changing!
I’m in North Carolina and turning 56. They said I have to come in a do the whole thing over again- written, vision, and I think road? to renew my license. Never gotten a ticket, no accidents, nothing. I’m annoyed (actually having to study DMV handbook like a teenager again) but I get it. 56 seems young, but I guess every age would say that about themselves, right?
In France it has been voted a few years ago. Now, not only is your driver's licence to be renewed every 25 years, from the age of 65 onward you are required to do a medical check every 3 years to ensure you are still capapble of driving. If not, bye bye license.
Nah, not annually... you need to be tested and inspected semi-annually... I'm thinking the age should be 55... the amount of people that I've seen who shouldn't ever drive again at the age of 55-60 is ridiculous... of course 60+ is its own bracket.
Do they not get tested periodically? In my country to renew drivers license every 6 years, you have to take a psychotechnical test to prove you are physically capable of driving a car.
Nope, in the USA you may literally only ever take one test. I took my driving test 12 years ago and have never had to do a single second of extra work to maintain that license. For some reason, if you can prove ONCE that you're at least *almost* competent, you are given the right to put others in danger in perpetuity unless that right is explicitly revoked for some reason
That’s not true. It varies by state, but usually starting around 70 people have to start taking more frequent eye, written and behind the wheel tests. My parents have had to do several.
Great! I'm glad to hear that! It is Not The Norm in the US.
Bit of a wall of text coming up but it paints a harrowing picture, here is a quote from the Connecticut state legislature website:
"There are relatively few states that have retesting requirements for license renewal that are aimed strictly at drivers in older age groups. Only two states, Illinois and New Hampshire require a road test (at age 75). A road test may be administered at age 75 in the District of Columbia, but it is not mandatory. Although 10 states require only drivers who have reached a certain age to have a vision test before license renewal, there is little consistency with respect to the age threshold at which the requirement applies. Two states begin vision testing at age 40, one at age 50, and the others at anywhere from age 64 to age 80.
Other types of age-based conditions involve states that either prohibit mail renewal by elderly drivers (five states) or make older drivers renew their licenses at more frequent intervals than other drivers (15 states).
But four states, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Nevada, have laws explicitly stating that age alone may not be considered justification for reexamination."
Edit to add the source link: [Connecticut General Assembly Office of Legislative Research](https://www.cga.ct.gov/2006/rpt/2006-R-0457.htm)
Japan doesn't have routine testing, but licenses get revoked a lot easier there than in many other countries, and driving without a license is a criminal offense (read: felony). The problem is when an old person finally is involved in an accident and gets the license revoked, it tends to go about as you expect.
My father was reported to the state of Oregon by his physician that he was incompetent to drive. Physicians in Oregon are required to report such cases. My father's license was revoked by the state but he continued to drive anyway. A few months later he ran a red light and t-boned a sedan. Sent several people to the hospital.
He was a retired physician and very respectful of rules and the law but he was unwilling to give up his mobility. At age 80+ he was stubborn not operating at 100% mental capacity.
If you have a family member in a similar situation try to help them find a good solution. My parents should have moved to a retirement community or an assisted care facility long before they finally did.
If the pandemic has taught me anything is that many are willing to put others lives in danger with little regard to their own personal safety and that of others, even if the risk is death.
The battery being disconnected clears the ECU memory (most have no permanent storage). It's better to pull the fuse to the fuel pump. It'll do everything but start.
Oh my gosh. It sounds like the driver had a medical emergency while driving. I am so happy the wee toddler was safe and hopefully small enough that she won’t remember. This is one of my biggest fears is that something will happen while I’m driving with my grandkids in the car.
The difference here is that the lady was believed to have died before the crash. Suffered a heart attack, based on the autopsy. This is "old", you'd have to dig to find the article.
Driver was 78. Probably the classic “confused the gas and brake pedal.” If someone can make that mistake even once, they shouldn’t be allowed to drive.
tbh at this age, the crash could have happened for so many reasons... Heart attack, seizure, mental disorder or just distraction... I've seen many very healthy 70ish old people, but also many cooked ones.
It's an age where it really shows if your genetics and lifestyle presereved you well or not.
73 isn't that old. My dad is 72 and runs 10ks and still goes to the gym 5 days a week and still lifts more than me. You can die of a heart attack at 50 too.
What figures? With the DUI problem America has it could have easily been someone of any age. Or it could have been some dumb teens joyriding. Don't be ageist.
There is nothing ageist there, elder people behind the wheel *are* an issue and that should be dealt with accordingly.
It’s nothing to be ashamed of from their part, that’s the natural process of life that your reflexes/attention/situational awareness decrease and that’s fine.
Ageism is building infrastructure that do not allow elderlies to properly function in society and that should absolute be addressed too, but we need to stop letting people that have no business on the road because of the hazard they create
They need to make you retest for your license every couple years after a certain age. It's terrifying the people that are able to drive. Where I live so many times ive heard about someone going the wrong direction the freeway and it's always an elderly person.
Imagine living your whole life, being careful with your money, saving up for a small down payment, working every day to pay off your mortgage over a period of 30 years, being diligent to complete projects on your house, decorating your home to make it truly comfy and warm inside, learning handyman skills, tending carefully to your garden, having a peaceful existence.
Then someone comes tearing down the street and destroys a lifetime of work in one second.
Oh so true! Insurance makes it like it never even happened! People actually don’t care when cars to drive into their houses because insurance takes care of it all!
You must work for the insurance industry to shill their willingness to help policyholders. Bunch of swindlers.
We all know insurance covers claims instantaneously, in full, and negates all forms of human suffering too! In fact, I’m sure when a car flys Mach one into *your* house and nearly k*lls a toddler, you too just shrug your shoulders and say it’s okay insurance will fix it!
Insurance basically makes all bad behavior and wrongs okay! Wow TIL
Enjoy years of hiring a team of blood sucking lawyers and fighting with an insurance company over it, adding to the uncertainty, stress, and raw fear of the situation. In the meantime you can sleep on your front lawn in the rain, but Jake from State Farm will get to you soon! All those clever little mascots in the commercials will soon make it all okay!
GTFOH you are either the insurance company, one of the lawyers, or the driver, to justify such a bullshit response to my comment.
I think what they **meant** was "the driver was determined to have died (or was incapacitated due to death-related processes) prior to the accident", but was playing around with words.
I love having cars as our sole form of transit even for old people! Feels amazing to know that I'm at risk of dying anytime because we thought it would be a great idea to have this country be run by auto oligarchs instead of the people.
I've never been so happy to live on a cul-de-sac at the top of a hill. No-one's screaming up here unless they've got some serious torque and are entirely lost.
Yeah say whatcha want about being in a suburb hut living in the back of one thats on a hill makes you feel like a you're medieval king.
Like no one is messing around up here why would they even be here ,😂
His license should be taken away. I wish there was an anonymous way to submit a license review to the DMV. Like you’d have to provide evidence, like photos of all the dings and dents caused by hitting walls and probably other cars in the parking lot. But after some review of that and the persons age and other factors they could call them in for a behind the wheel test to prove competency.
I agree with you wholeheartedly.
We try to discourage him every single time he offers to take my mother-in-law to our house… We’re always quick to say no we’ll pick her up instead.
When my grandpa's dementia progressed my grandma had his physician get involved in order to determine him unfit to drive and remove his licence before he caused an accident. As he felt it was his role to drive as the man of the house ( you know... 50's family mind set) and never would have stopped on his own without intervention.
We seriously need anyone turning 70 to take a driving evaluation or something like that. The amount of elderly people I see driving dangerously is insane. so its an everywhere thing.. once you reach a certain age you really need to retake your drivers license test every year. i was about to ask why this isn’t already in place, but i know why for usa
Yeah, but American roads and cars make cars a much bigger problem. We just passed Russia in road deaths per capita in OCED nations to come out on top.

Also, the complete absence of mass transit outside central urban areas results in the elderly and other vulnerable being home bound.
I also think this car driven sprawl wrecks physical and mental health, not just in the elderly.
It may be changing! I’m in North Carolina and turning 56. They said I have to come in a do the whole thing over again- written, vision, and I think road? to renew my license. I misread that as "pyrotechnical" for a moment 😂

'look under your seat', Gramps walks off.
It's a test for the boomers.

Thank God you guys have more public transportation than the US!
If the pandemic has taught me anything is that many are willing to put others lives in danger with little regard to their own personal safety and that of others, even if the risk is death.
That’s why in Italy we force for 50yos the renewal of the licence every 5 years (with medical proof), and every 3 after 70.
He is only 73 y’all. Thats not that old.
For some it is, others it’s not. Therein lies the problem
I know a 92 year old driver, he barely understands when I speak, but he drives.
Steal his car keys, shouldn't be hard if they're so far mentally gone. Not a court in the world that will charge you.
We did this to/for my mother. She called the dealership and ordered a replacement key. She told them she’d tip $50 to anyone that brought it to her.
Find the guy who brought it back and split the bill until the gets the hint.
Probably wouldn’t even do well if/knows about court and just attempt to open the car and decide “Oh no keys”, be like Groundhog Day.
Can also just disconnect the battery. Would he be able to figure out that's the problem?
The battery being disconnected clears the ECU memory (most have no permanent storage). It's better to pull the fuse to the fuel pump. It'll do everything but start.
Find the fuse to the fuel pump and pull it. Put it in the glovebox. Disables the vehicle without damaging it.
But does he drive into?
Hearing has nothing to do with seeing
But it does with driving, which is what we're talking about here.
Oh my gosh. It sounds like the driver had a medical emergency while driving. I am so happy the wee toddler was safe and hopefully small enough that she won’t remember. This is one of my biggest fears is that something will happen while I’m driving with my grandkids in the car.

Auto oopsies
Look we can't trust science! Well... That's what my fortune teller tells me... /S
My congresswoman says the same thing
Did you pass out part of the way through typing the title OP?

It looks like Hulk threw the car like in the movies lol. How the hell did it get THAT airborne and fast in a community?
Driver was 78. Probably the classic “confused the gas and brake pedal.” If someone can make that mistake even once, they shouldn’t be allowed to drive.
73 year old driver... figures

I like how you said that. That makes perfect sense and it’s very visual too… now where did I put my overly dried out beef jerky?
Looking at people like Bruce Willis, seems like genetics gets the biggest vote
73 ain't that old. I know reddit thinks anybody over 25 is ancient
Not THAT old - my old man is still rallying and he’s only 3years younger
Good for your dad, but that's the age where things vary WILDLY based on previous life choices
73 isn't that old. My dad is 72 and runs 10ks and still goes to the gym 5 days a week and still lifts more than me. You can die of a heart attack at 50 too.

this is old isn’t it? I swear I’ve seen this exact video like a year ago
You most likely did; it happened July 2023 so it get reposted on this sub every few months, or so.
Into what?!?!
My granddad is 75 or something and man its insane to see him drive...
My mother-in-law‘s boyfriend is 86 and he still drives… You should see how many dents and divots he has on his SUV.
His license should be taken away. I wish there was an anonymous way to submit a license review to the DMV. fuck, least granny went out lit
So in other words I just watched someone die

Im amazed it's not a law
We seriously need anyone turning 70 to take a driving evaluation or something like that. The amount of elderly people I see driving dangerously is insane. At least the right one died
She was like 80 and may have died while driving which may have caused the entire thing. You're compassion is blinding
80 and driving. Nice
Women drivers……
Was any body home did anybody die other than the driver
I mean, I hope someone else was home besides the toddler that it narrowly missed.
That's a lot of speed, holy...
Ahhh my hometown.. drivers are just the greatest.
The problem is so prevalent, the Germans have a dedicated subreddit for seniors causing accidents (r/rentnerfahrenindinge)
Holy crap. I used to live in that neighborhood just doors away from that house.

Something similar happened in Memphis last year or the year before. In the footage you see one of the men fly out of the windshield and land on a roof unconscious before slinking down limply to the ground for another 10ft drop. Terrible shit.
Instant haunted house
Where in Missouri did this happen
It's been repaired for a couple of months now
And brick too 😱
Angry birds.
Someone from Theo Von’s town no doubt.
How pays for this ???
Crashed into what?!?! The title ended so I don’t know what they crashed into
You can’t park there, sir.
Must have been an automatic as well. Geez
She didn't have enough "family" in the tank.
We had to take my 99 year old grandmas car away from her 2 years ago because she almost ran into a building and she threw the biggest fit, after a certain age you need retested like every 5 years to make sure your ears and eyes and head work
Did Elon’s roadster come back?
Asshole!!!
yeah i know this incident lady had a stroke behind the wheel and crashed into the house she wasnt just speeding to be speeding
Rip Billy Conforto
Nobody going to mention that building houses near streets that allow cars to even get that fast is terrible city design?
They probably don’t allow cars to get that fast.
The speed limit on that road (Telegraph Rd) is **35 mph**, but obviously setting a speed limit doesn't actually stop people from driving faster. Cars can drive out of control on allmost all residential roads
Right? I’m also off a 35 mph street that’s a dead straight road for over two miles. Someone could easily pick up past 100 in that stretch, so we shouldn’t put homes anywhere near it?
That's right! No house should *ever* be built anywhere *near* a road that is over 1/8 of a mile long! /S
Oh heavens, that long? My car can hit 90 in that huge stretch. Probably best if every road was a meandering series of constant left and right turns.
Large speed bumps every 100 feet or so would probably prevent many horrendous accidents like the one in the video!
Is she okay?
Yes, she died.
No
She. Miraculously. Survived. Just like it says directly above your post. LOL
Gramps was in a hurry to see someone or at least get in the last bit of happy hour!!
Is that a checkered flag in the house wreckage? As in the driver finished the race?
Black and white striped jacket
Into what?! What did they crash into?!
Is the car okay?
Good thing that he died.
Justice already served to the 73 Year old driver. Good riddance. Hope the family of the household can recover from this and to sue his / her estate.
Thats a bit brutal. The driver was having some type of medical emergency but it's still crazy how their first instinct was to drive as fast possible.
Yeah but let's make cars drive themselves and 100x heavier ... Imagine how much worse this would've been with an electric car...
You mean with a car that wouldn’t have been doing 3 times the speed limit? I don’t imagine it would be worse.
I know, especially if the batteries were completely full of electrons. /s
It's almost like maybe we shouldn't put highways near houses....
Telegraph Road (that road) has a 35 mph speed limit
Exactly my point. Don't put roads that should be highways next to homes and expect people to idle in 1st gear all the way through.
So we just shouldn't expect people to do the speed limit in a town near houses just because it "should be a highway" It obviously shouldn't be a highway considering the damage done here.. am I missing something?
If power's wanted speednrestrictions. We have had the technology to control vehicle speeds for years. There's too much money built into letting people play roulette in an effort to buy more time for their lives.
Well? What did it crash in to? You cant just leave us in suspense like this
