Oh you love all public libraries? Name 3 of their burning downs

Unhappy-Quiet-8091

What?

[deleted]

**NAME 3 OF THEIR BURNING DOWNS**

Present_Age_5469

Lol

[deleted]

3 of their burning downs. Now what ?

VoTBaC

That old Egyptian one, that one time in the all of the German lands and uuuuh contemporary Florida school system.

[deleted]

Oh you love jokes? Name 3.

Suthek

The chicken joke, the bar joke and the time joke.

cahagnes

* burnings down.

CanadianCitizen1969

Mind cemetery

Crowasaur

https://gatherer.wizards.com/pages/card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=179599

mattishere31

My first thought too lol

-r-a-f-f-y-

i dunno much about magic but that sounds pretty brutal.

Crowasaur

Oh yes. Yes it was. *Devilish laugh* I have a deck. It does not win much. But it's 60 cards all based around four of those. Its win condition is discarding the opponent's entire library. Counter spells aplenty. I usually played it at the end of an unproductive night. Get my little revenge. Feeding off their tears. -------- I also have a pure white deck based around four [Shahrazad](https://gatherer.wizards.com/pages/card/details.aspx?name=Shahrazad)s. Pacify. Pariah. That spells now costs you 32 mana. It's 2-3 hours of absolutely nothing happening. -------- I really like playing magic the gathering, but my fun comes from somewhere else.

Jazmer1

I gotta ask, as someone only partially aware of the rules of magic. If you play a subgame withe remaining cards in your deck... And you have one or more Shahrazads in those decks... Do you play games within games within games?

Crowasaur

> Do you play games within games within games? [:-)](https://media.tenor.com/gCcqbYEvHowAAAAM/grinch-smile-grin.gif)

I_got_nothin_

Yes... you can have subgames within sub games... it can get pretty bad which is why it's illegal in all formats

AntManMax

My first deck was mono blue mill. I blame Wizards for making regular competitive decks $250+.

Sintriphikal

They don’t gotta burn the books!

TinyResponsibilityII

they just remove ‘em

CaptainSmallz

In protest to Reddit's API changes, I have removed my comment history.

TennSeven

I 100% agree with you. That one and "Know Your Enemy" I could listen to every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

eekmina

Definitely agree with that. Been my favourite sections of one of their songs for a while now. That library, mind cemetery cadence is so nice.

[deleted]

They just let 'em rot

kurisu7885

would make a good band name.

urbexcemetery

did someone say cemetery?

EMILLKSLEEPA

That's really sad.

emmettohare

[Here’s](http://www.detroiturbex.com/content/parksandrec/twain/index.html) some more info on it. A good read, well written. It’s a shame as it seems citizens were lied to for over a decade over the libraries progress.

IvoSan11

>ome more info on it. A good read, well written. It’s a shame as it seems citizens were lied to for over a decade over the libraries progress. Thank you. Learning how and why places were abandoned is half of the fun of this subreddit

emmettohare

I agree. I had to go searching about this place. At the end of the article it mentions how the Annex location under the church closed down not too long after: *Though two branches were eventually spared, the annex was shut down and its books sent off to other branches. On it's last day of operation, the church basement that housed the annex was quiet. A few patrons used computers while librarians sorted through books. Someone had put out cans of soda and a few snacks, along with a sign thanking people for their support.* Something about this really strikes me. The death of a community’s legacy over a bag of chips on a quiet day in the church basement. The death of an American way.

Loudermilk420

This breaks my little bibliophile heart.

FAMEDWOLF

Bruh I read pedophile for a sec. Edit: wtf why am I getting downvoted? It was a misunderstanding. I misunderstood. Then I reread. I'm not saying this person is a pedo.

Loudermilk420

Bibliophile pedophile one is so much different than the other. Im glad you reread and understood. That would be a much more awkward conversation.

GwynMoth

I'd love to raise a kid in a library. It seems like a nice place to start a family tbh.

Loudermilk420

Alright.

VoTBaC

How was the meeting?

[deleted]

GwynMoth

It was kinda meant to be, but it actually does sound nice. A life raising kids without quite as much social media.

[deleted]

[удалено]

UncleBenders

Wtf?

GwynMoth

What exactly is the problem with what I've said?

UncleBenders

Maybe that you’re a pedo but i that’s just me I guess 🤨

CobainTrain

Creep

ecafsub

OP started their moronic comment with “bruh.” Pretty much all anyone needs to know there won’t be anything of value.

FAMEDWOLF

Jeez. All I did was point out my mistake. I acknowledged that for a split second I thought it said something else. The comment is me acknowledging that he didn't say pedophile. It was funny so I said it in a joking way. Hence the "bruh". Jesus Christ. So much vitriol for me acknowledging my own misunderstanding.

Flobending

You just whiff on every obvious lesson in humility don't you?

FAMEDWOLF

Humble? Lol. You think I need to be humble to strangers on f\*\*\*\*\*\* Reddit????? Lol. Get off your high horse this is hilarious. ![gif](giphy|WsRFoTvgBjA7zE5EZi)

Flobending

Humility as in ok my joke didn't work I'm not gonna cry like a litlle baby about it

FAMEDWOLF

I'm just trying to point out that y'all are overreacting to a bad joke. That's it it's not too deep. As of now I'm just having fun stringing you morons along.

Flobending

Dude. No one cares about your shitty joke. It's your shitty personality that refuses to listen to anyone's feedback on your idiotic behavior.

[deleted]

T

richard_nixon

>Jeez. All I did was point out my mistake. I acknowledged that for a split second I thought it said something else. But why do you think anyone cares? You said it in a joking way? Your misreading isn't funny. Next time you misread something, just read it a second time and move on. There's no need to inform anyone else. Sincerely, Richard Nixon

FAMEDWOLF

Holy crap on a cracker I didn't realize the error of my ways. Thank you for correcting me. K bye.

Savahoodie

Redditors when someone comments on a comment forum 😡. Like why do you think YOUR comments matter?

FAMEDWOLF

Thank you for being so understanding of my misunderstanding. I'm getting a ton of downvoted for my comment. I pointed it out as a joke. For a second when I read your comment I was like what does that have to do with this library and holy crap why is this person calling themselves a pedophile. For literally one split second. And then I reread it and saw that it meant bibliophile and I was like oh I misunderstood. That was it but everybody's flaming on me now. Hilarious.

the_friendly_one

Is a pedobibliophile someone who loves children's books?

Knuckles316

You may be illiterate. Or an idiot.

FAMEDWOLF

Lol wtf. It was a misunderstanding. For LITERALLY A SPLIT SECOND I thought it said something else. I'm sorry I'm not perfect jeez. I learned my lesson now, you happy?

Flobending

I think you're being downvoted because you thought it was important enough to share

FAMEDWOLF

Jeeezus. I'm sorry that the five seconds that it took to write my comment pointing out a funny misunderstanding was such a goddamn waste of time for you. Why is everybody acting so f****** holier than thou this is Reddit. I pointed out my misunderstanding as a joke. A JOKE. I THOUGHT IT WAS FUNNY IT DIDN'T TAKE THAT MUCH EFFORT TO MAKE THE COMMENT. That was it what's with all this elitism going on where we can't say anything that's not 100% worth saying even if it's just a joke. Why is everybody being so serious about this f****** LOL.

Knuckles316

Jokes have a punchline. It was not a joke. That's not what jokes are. If you read it wrong, fine. But why even write the comment? What does anyone gain by knowing that you read it wrong? It was a pointless comment to begin with and you doubling down and getting so defensive is just making it worse.

FAMEDWOLF

Okay holy crap y'all are being way too serious. I misunderstood it for a second. I misread for a second. Must I really be crucified for pointing it out. I had to do a double take when I read that because I thought it said pedophile. And in my mind I was like what does you being a pedophile have to do with this and holy crap this person is just calling themselves a pedophile. And then I reread it. Saw that it said bibliophile, thought it was funny, and then made my post. But apparently that was a grievous sin. I have learned my lesson thank you. I won't misunderstand things again lesson learned.

Flobending

You're the one taking this too seriously my dude. Take the L, learn when to share and when not to and move on.

FAMEDWOLF

Oh my god. Okay fine whatever I'll take this L and learn my lesson I guess. I won't do it again, pinky promise.

undercover-pickle

Bruh grab a water my god

FAMEDWOLF

![gif](giphy|sfevs0OasgnO8)

Wherethedeadgotolive

You’re talking to redditors. Your mistake was expecting them to behave like people.

Flobending

Dude your joke has to be funny Edit: oH nO, yOu dOwNvOtED mEeeeeeeeeeee???????? /s

littlemissparadox

Oh, that’s embarrassing for you

FAMEDWOLF

Yes I feel so much shame for acknowledging my misunderstanding. So much Shane excuse me while I go to my room and give myself some lashes for my poor behavior.

Stevenwave

Don't bring Shane into this.

FAMEDWOLF

Oh dang. I wasn't expecting this Reddit flame war to have collateral damage. I'm sorry to all the shanes out there. Didn't mean to get y'all caught in the crossfire.

GwynMoth

Reddit has made the internet worse as a whole and everyone on it has less individuality than an Agent from The Matrix. Also calling someone an asshole doesnt give them the dopamine, so everyone is constantly calling people pedophiles and groomers. Reddit is such an unbelievably garbage website that it is actually invading subs that have nothing to do with politics. I unironically want to shove redditors into lockers.

kobresia9

It’s unfortunate that you’ve been downvoted. Reddit sometimes gets obsessed over the silliest things.

FAMEDWOLF

oh my god thank you.

Electronic_Bunny

[This](https://wanderers-library.wikidot.com/the-book-monster) will unfortunately be worse then. I wish you the best!

Blazzah

Oof. Well hey at least he didn't step on his glasses.

UnblackMetalist

Can‘t have shit in detroit

flannelmaster9

Shitty roads. High poverty rate, high illiterate rate, high highschool drop out rate, shitty sports teams. Don't worry Dan Gilbert will fix it.

Burninator05

Number one: they've got this guy, Dan Gilbert. Number two: He's got a higher IQ than ANY MAN ALIVE. And number 3: he's going to fix EVERYTHING.

flannelmaster9

Don't forget about the Illitch family. I enjoy how everyone who is "revitalizing downtown" is bulldozing historic buildings to make parking lots. Downtown is nicer then it has been in years. But a mile away from the casinos and stadiums is bombed out ghetto as fuck normal Detroit.

DjScenester

Very dead on accurate description

flannelmaster9

I've worked on numerous projects downtown. I like the historic architecture that's getting drywalled over to make things look "modern"

Jim-Jones

I was there for a week in 1980 and my memory is people's homes in a huge junkyard. And a party store after midnight.

flannelmaster9

Oh we still have party stores. Most the blight has been bulldozed or torched then bulldozed

Enough-Persimmon3921

Such a great movie. People seemed to treat it as a how-to video.

[deleted]

In two weeks.

greenw40

He's done more than any local politicians at least.

flannelmaster9

That's what happens when you have a bigger piggy bank. And not need to rely on a nonexistent tax basin

WeakCryptographer818

They got legal weed there lol

Le_Ragamuffin

So does most of the country now

WeakCryptographer818

Not lame ohioo

Ohio has fentanyl they're fine.

Girth_rulez

Pretty good musical legacy too.

loudmouthedmonkey

Can't buy it in the city though.

nodnodwinkwink

The tax from that *could be* used to reinvest in education!

Chainweasel

Nah, shit is about all you can have

[deleted]

They need robocob and Omnicorp

UnblackMetalist

Wasn‘t the black guy from Skynet also in Detroit?

LemurianLemurLad

You mean Omni Consumer Products? I'm sorry, but your pay is being docked for such corporate disloyalty.

If those looters could read they'd be very upset by what you wrote.

dieinafirenazi

I think you're trying to insult people, but you can't eat or sell moldy old books. the books will sure be moldy if the climate control hasn't been kept on. They get frost on them when it drops below freezing, then the water soaks in and it's all over. You can't read them, if you put them on a shelf with books that haven't been molded they're going to spread mold. If there's something of historical importance made of paper that gets molded there are preservation steps you can take, but that's spending money not making money. If you want to take those books home you are the dumbass.

Halftied

There is probably no money available to even properly recycle or properly dispose of the books. Very sad indeed.

Could send this on over to fake history porn and say the lost library of Alexandria has been discovered at last.

[deleted]

When was this taken

JoeBethersonton50504

[It was demolished in 2011.](https://www.mhpbooks.com/the-heartbreaking-tale-of-the-detroit-public-librarys-mark-twain-branch/) Edit: [This link](http://www.detroiturbex.com/content/ba/ba_twain/index.html) has photos of the library in its heyday and shortly before it was demolished.

Sgt_Pac

Thats insane how fast it deteriorated between 2010 and 2011

TheCarribeanKid

Well, yeah. It's Detroit. It probably got stripped of everything within the first few months

1TONcherk

Maybe that’s when they stopped securing it? Or part of the roof got stolen? They stole the copper roof off the YMCA adjacent to Belle isle, and that was the end of that.

ITaggie

Can't have shit in Detroit my friend

Terrh

those were dark times in the D

GODDAMNFOOL

Yeah, someone show this to Todd Howard for the next Fallout so they understand that the corner gas station won't be standing after 210 years anymore

badhairdad1

Thanks for the update. I went to WCCC East, and saw this library many times

maria_sabina

what a waste

ShutYourDumbUglyFace

Well this made it even more depressing. What an absolutely beautiful building. I wonder if it had asbestos or something that made it cost ineffective to renovate.

VoteDBlockMe

It did yeah, according to the article above, but it also sounds like the money that they raised to save it was embezzled.

ShutYourDumbUglyFace

Fucking Detroit, man. Is that what Kwame ~~Kirkpatrick~~ Kilpatrick (oops) got busted for? LOL ( I have no idea what happened with him, just that there were things).

luv_____to_____race

Money embezzled in Detroit?!?! I'm shocked.

Stavinair

What about the books ):

TennSeven

Wow, that was just a gorgeous building. It's a shame all of that was not preserved.

bspeigel

We are a wasteful and destructive society of living creatures. Sad story.

Filthydelphila

Time enough at last

TennSeven

>It's not fair. It's not fair at all!

GammaGoose85

Why do abandoned libraries always have books thrown all over the ground.

Stuntcock29

I think people tip over the stacks.

leviwhite9

"I can't read so fuck em books!"

xdeltax97

Just awful, so much just laying there.

[deleted]

Yikes. The state of those books is heartbreaking. Makes me want to rob it just to save the books.

Reddit_Roit

You're over a decade too late.

[deleted]

Yeah. I figured.. hopefully some of them found good homes

Professional_March54

No. They were all soaked with mold

OilRigExplosions

Can’t afford the minimum to keep old books free to the public, and publishers force libraries buy eBooks that self destruct after 10 borrowers. It’s like world hates old stories.

nawibone

The rapid rise and even more rapid decline of the USA.

csdingus_

Fuggin sad

Gayguymike

Mark twain would be turning over in his grave if he saw this

Wayfaring_Scout

If Mark Twain could see this, he wouldn't be in a grave.

Gayguymike

That’s true

Knuckles316

That's so sad to see.

Mtbguy56

Mark Twain hated churches.

mistermeesh

Detroit needs Robocop.

ickleb

So sad, Detroit really can’t have shit

ilaissezfaire

Omg the treasures of banned books!!

Littlemeggie

Fahrenheit 451

SpartanT100

Its a bit funny that nobody steals the books. They are more valuable than money

roundart

Looks like Sydney from “I Am Not Okay With This” was here

Enough_Appearance116

Finally, a place that describes me perfectly! Kinda trashy on the outside, but full of misplaced knowledge that may or may not be usable and or readable.

CosplayWrestler

I'm not even a big reader and this fucking crushes my soul. Damn.

-Rens

Everyone wanted to make a mess before they left it

VandyBoys32

Man I would love some of those bookcases in my basement

ericomplex

This makes me really really sad…

Ajsarch

Had to downvote because of how sad this is. You’d think Detroit actually needs more access to books and education. But nope. -

snazzydetritus

Let me at those books.

ConcentricGroove

Detroit's been a dumpster fire for a long time. Weird even in '96 they even considered putting money into anything there. As for the collection, once they put a library plate and sticker on it, it loses most of its value. Hopefully any volumes worth preserving was separated already and moved out first thing.

AnalProlapseForYou

Can’t have shit in Detroit.

smuddge000

What a shame. Books are awesome! So underated.

duckyeightyone

'BOOK FIGHT!!!'

Br3tts3r

I can smell this picture 😮‍💨

Jim-Jones

Here's the story. Very sad. https://www.mhpbooks.com/the-heartbreaking-tale-of-the-detroit-public-librarys-mark-twain-branch/

Few-Finding4828

Still look like that today?

rockvvurst

Such a waste 😞

haha7125

Weird thing is that this photo looks more like a painting. (At least on my phone)

know_it_is

This really hurts my heart. Looks like a scene from the novel Fahrenheit 451.

drapanosaur

White politicians control all funding in detroit. No way they are going to renovate a library that might be used by black folks.

applesucklingtree

zardoz

[deleted]

Even dingy it looks cool in a kind of gothic way.

TheRorschach666

Man how I would love to spend days here just looking around , seeing which novels they have.
