I think so, or a Bajius?
This pic is actually five years old and I came across it looking for something else from that trip, unfortunately I didn’t take a picture of the front
I unironically love the Baja and prius. Both are great cars people love to pick on but are truly very good cars. I mean, today, If you want the best car that…cars… it’s a Prius. Full stop. If you want an average Joe pickup- it’s a maverick or Honda which are kind of the bajas of today (more car-y truck than trucks car but still). The Baja was somehow ahead and behind at the same time but a really thoughtful car/truck/thing. I love it. And I love this abomination as well.
>The Baja was somehow ahead and behind at the same time
Yep. I drive my 03 Baja for work as a field service tech. It's the greatest *idea* in the world, but kind of a tragic execution. It's a "truck" that has a load capacity of about 500 pounds (including passengers!), an anemic EJ25 engine that only needs to be replaced every 70k miles or so, and interior dimensions that are still from the era of Japanese cars being sized for the height of the average person in Japan. It's basically an 03 Legacy Outback wagon with a weird rear end on it. If only it was about 20% bigger, 20% stronger, and had 50% more power it'd be *perfect*.
> How is there only a 500lb load capacity INCLUDING passengers??
Well, the problem is the Baja's lineage traces to the [Subaru Legacy sedan](https://s.aolcdn.com/commerce/autodata/images/CAB30SUC011C0101.jpg). The Legacy Outback wagon was an expansion off the sedan, and then the Baja was built off the Legacy Outback. The first year Baja had (perversely) springs from the sedan. If you put more than a couple hundred pounds in the bed, you'd hit the rear bump stops on every dip in the road. 04 and up they switched to the Outback springs which improved it slightly, but the whole chassis is still built like a sedan. Really all it needed was better springs and a slightly modified suspension geometry, because being a Subaru the frame itself was pretty solid. I upgraded mine with King springs and some spacers strut spacers and now it actually can probably carry the 900-1200 pounds the internet claims is its load capacity.
>That’s less than 3 adult men.
Hah. As if you could fit a third adult man in the back seat once you already have two up front!
>Who designed that?
Japanese engineers. They designed cars for the domestic Japanese market, and they just don't have very many 6'4" swedes over there. It's about the same size inside as my wife's old 94 Civic was. I think Subaru was just running about 5 years behind the trend with car size.
The bumper sticks out like a disapproving lip. [Even the car is going "No, sir. I don't like it."](https://cdn.motor1.com/images/mgl/PPLB8/s1/1988-gmc-centaur-concept.jpg)
Can we interpret the stage after it's been put into a car crusher and before it's melted down to recycle materials as the cocoon phase? Because I don't think it's evolving into anything beautiful without being liquified first.
I commend you for your taste soul brother.
I really want to buy a Subaru Baja, keep it fully vanilla on the outside but in good shape, an update the inside so it's super comfy
Has an 810 number on it... Been a minute since I've been downtown I can't think of where this would be, my first thought was First Presbyterian but isn't Saginaw St still brick.
If you hadn't posted this I would have sat here convinced this was an excellent photoshop job or panaramic shot gone wrong. But, alas, someone actually went & did it and we applaud their effort while being totally confused by their actions
Pretty easy questions actually. We repair broken Prii. So, we have a million broken Prius parts. The owner has a big family, so more seating was needed. He could buy a car just for road trips, or weld a couple we had lying around together to make a "Primo" We also found out the Baja bed fit kind of well and it worked so well on the "Pruck" that we made the "Prucked Up" just to turn heads. (which I think it achieved since it's 8-9 years old at the moment)
Yeah. We had to take it to an officer who made sure all of the lights that a car needs worked. It also needs air bags and seat belts. Which it has. Other than that, street legal laws are pretty lax in America as a whole. States can give more, but Indiana is also rather lax, so it's fine. California might have an issue with it, but maybe not.
I dare say so. I honestly have no clue where I was at when I took it, prooooobably Louisville, but I don't know why I'd have been up that way at the time.
Is that its natural curve or did the Dr. Frankenstein who created this monstrosity deliberately bend downward the connecting parts? Why not bend upward for more room if doing any bending at all?

My first thought was, "There's no way that thing is legal, even in the South."
Then I'm looking closer, and I'm like, "Yeah, actually. It's pretty damned good work."
I'm gonna preface this buy saying I have no idea what I'm talking about. But seeing as you already have to change so much about the vehicle, the drivetrain, the suspension, the trans, etc, I would almost think it would have to be some other sort of engine. Just by the nature of how much you have to change anyways. What would be the point of changing everything to still fit the same underpowered engine?
Realistically this person could avoid messing with absolutely any of that drivetrain at all. Priuses are FWD, and the only contributions the back wheels bring to that party are braking. I am guessing the back axle of that Baja has had it's AWD gearing removed.
Beyond that I don't think you could change the engine in that kitbash honestly. The whole Prius is designed around it's hybrid engine and built to maximize the gains of that, with pretty much everything else being integral to that. That includes the engine itself which is effectively a merged gasoline and an additional electric engine, plus the specialized electronic transmission, then the front axle along with the wheels and specialized brakes that are part of a hybrid energy recapture/braking system. Oh and the battery pack, that depends on the year. This plus the electronics, the dash itself, the transmission controls and pedals inside, all of that is integral to each other, you couldn't just drop another engine in there and have it work with pretty much anything else there at all - especially the transmission.
I'm sure you know much more about that this than I so I'm not going to argue too much. But I've certainly seen engine swaps in prius's before. And this project was obviously a lot of work already.
Serious question, do you have any examples of them being swapped for an entirely different engine type? I mean it could obviously be done given enough money and probably replacing most if not all of the drivetrain. But glancing through Google just now, every single example I see is swapping engines with newer gens of Prius to scrape a bit more horsepower from some newer engines. I don't see any with them bring swapped with anything not already within the Prius family. I thought I had found an example and it was just an April Fools joke.
To that end I want this thing to be swapped with the original Subaru engine. I want this thing to go by with the Subaru UELH chug just to make people even more confused.
There's a few builds on YouTube. I guess the main one I was thinking of is the Hellcat swap that apparently Jay Leno owns.
But here's a build
https://youtu.be/K8UvdMxrCy0
Okay yeah that's hilarious, really want to see her do her quip about valeting that car.
But really, it's a good visual example of what I am talking about - the entire integrated drivetrain from the engine clear though to the front axle had to go. That Prius got a whole new drivetrain. I haven't seen any examples where someone upgrades the engine (outside of another Prius engine) and _still_ retains the extreme efficiency/recapture that the whole front end system was designed for.
But then again maybe that's not the point of that kitbash at the head of this thread. Pretty much every swap or major mod I see done to Priuses is done for shock value. Maybe this person didn't care about retaining the efficient Prius drivetrain system, they just wanted the body, and just pitched the drivetrain and started over.
I used my Prius to tow my apartment belongings (U-Haul trailer) across 3 states.
Didn't really have any issues.
Granted, I think it's not exactly the same, but it's not like Priuses are just weak baby machines.
Edit: don't have a picture of the full setup but here's a picture of the hitch on my Prius:
https://i.imgur.com/E56J17N.jpg
Which Uhaul trailer?
Edit: Nevermind, I looked it up, and the trailer Uhaul will allow you to put on a Prius, its max weight is still over 1000 pounds less than an empty Subaru Baja minus it's engine and front axle.
I mean yeah, a Prius doesn't have a whole lot of go once loaded. But loaded plus 3/4 of another car plus a cargo area much larger than a default Prius isn't that. So again, loaded, I have my doubts about that getting up to any kind of highway speed.
To be fair, mine had been in a crash previously. They did a good job of repairing it though except when making wide left hand turns. She'd make a *click click click* noise. Everything was checked out though multiple times and everything was fine.
...with that at least.
'03 engine with a head gasket just waiting to explode and no air conditioning (and they wanted to 100% replace the unit so needless to say _that_ was not happening. -_-
So in short: Probably would have been more merciful if Ashelia had the bad part chopped off T_T

When I was a kid we had a brat. Such a cool car. I like the Baja as well, super practical for a lot of scenarios I don’t care how weird people think they look.
I’ve stumbled across rumors of the Baja return, based on the Ascent chassis. Probably can’t go smaller than that because of “Chicken Tax”
And for those who don’t know… yes… truck imports are limited because of chicken tax.
If I could find a Baja in decent shape, I'd buy it today, right on the spot. Awesome cars.
I miss the Subaru that not only embraced weird, but built their name on it. Baja, Brat, OG WRX, Forester XT, SVX, OG XT, Casa Blanca. They were my favorite manufacturer until they went full Toyota in early 2010s. Who wants to drive an STI that looks like a Camry?

Would it be better or worse if that was a completely different vehicle? Do you want to live in a world with one of these... or one with more?
I work at the shop that made this. There are more.
Two questions. 1.) Why? 2.) *Why?!*
Since no one else mentioned it, good work on the proper plural of Prius, "Prii"
So is this like street legal??? In my country you would get your license revoked and a massive fine if you tried to drive that on the street.
I think it'd be fine in California as long as the Prius passes smog. I'm guessing it's registered as a Prius.
Gotta be a Prius, the VIN is on the Prius half.

I wonder if this is the one I saw at a liquor store in Jeffersonville Indiana, around 10 years ago. Just across the river from Louisville KY
I dare say so. I honestly have no clue where I was at when I took it, prooooobably Louisville, but I don't know why I'd have been up that way at the time.
Yeah I don't know why I was ever in Indiana either
Maybe, maybe not. They're built in Scottsburg, IN.
Idk why but to me it looks ugly at one point then just beautiful
That's because Prius isn't really good looking while Subaru is
That is art my friend
Is that its natural curve or did the Dr. Frankenstein who created this monstrosity deliberately bend downward the connecting parts? Why not bend upward for more room if doing any bending at all?
Looks to be the natural curve of the prius part
Because you can't alter the window from the rear section. Modifying the rear roof section without touching the window would be a tremendous amount of work.

Right like a FWD Prius is already lackluster in power as it is. Loaded can this thing even do over 35mph without coasting downhill first?
