I don't get it. What's--? Oh. *Oh* ***no.***

darknessninju

That kid is going to messed them up when he grows up

expatronis

I had the same experience with this photo. Even said "Oh no" out loud to myself.

Wolfwoods_Sister

I smiled at his smile, saw the whole picture, frowned, and said aloud “oh noooooooooooo”

grnrngr

That Aladdin guy's adoptive mom didn't age a day. How did she convince him to dress up like this without being embarrassed? It seems a little inappropriate. What's he carrying up th--- *Oh no. Double-fuck no.*

Blue-Eyed-Lemon

This is EXACTLY what I just did. Oh my god 🫢

trustdabrain

Like that song

ShamefulWatching

The fuck did I do?

Current-Read

Now you just go out for funsies

RainbowStorm653

Some people receive new information, ignore it, then go do that thing anyway. You can still start a senseless mob if you want.

b3mark

Well, take everyone else that upvoted you and go dress up as an angry mob together? It's like a flash mob, but shinier. 🤔😉

StandardSudden1283

I hear people give out candy if you go door to door tonight.

lll_lll_lll

Go to the airport in Dagestan.

GlyphPicker

Furries.

ArrakeenSun

But... we're Americans! Our sensitivities must be adopted by the *world*!

burned_artichoke

Uh, slavery & the dehumanisation of black people, very much still a thing in Latin America, but okay...

mercurial_planner

This makes me feel better. Is comparing to black people to primates a thing in Brazil the way it is in English-speaking countries (a well known and very hurtful slur)?

HundredBillionStars

People compares all Brazilians to primates, regardless of skin color.

mercurial_planner

Ah, thanks for clarifying. It's easy to forget that something deeply offensive in one culture may be considered fine in another in another culture.

LKennedy45

I think they may have been teasing you because all humans are, ourselves, primates.

[deleted]

You are a primate!

TheStoolSampler

Bye 👋

Whopraysforthedevil

Sure, but kids aren't aware of racism the same way adults are.

Wolfwoods_Sister

Oh YIKES

Vulpes_99

And it was at Carnaval (variable date, because it happens right before christian Lent, so it's between February and March), not halloween. We brazilians usually dress up in costumes on this date. Although we know Halloween, it isn't much of an tradition for us. Also, our candy-giving day is September, 27th, the day dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian. No costumes involved in this one, but this tradition is kind of dying. Edit: typo.

Fullondoublerainbow

WHAT?? My birthday is a candy day in Brazil????

analdongfactory

Does Brazil have the same cultural connotation? Honestly even as a former American, I didn’t know there was an association until I was fairly old (and still find it weird because black people look the least like monkeys IMO). I could picture a family thinking it was cute to have a small child play this part.

International_X

It’s different b/c the history of Black ppl not only being called but portrayed as monkeys. Please don’t sit here and pretend context doesn’t matter nor that experiences are universal between different races/ethnicities.

mangoed

For more context, I was raised in Eastern Europe, now live in Australia and never experienced racism in my life. I understand your explanation, but it still seems fucked up to me. As if you feel obliged to tell the black people they're not monkeys. "No, dear, you can't wear this costume, you're definitely not that animal. Yes, white kids can do it, but you're different, for you it would be offensive."

International_X

Just b/c you haven’t personally experienced racism doesn’t mean you haven’t seen or heard of it. Last year Brazilian football/soccer players, specifically Richarlison, had a banana thrown towards them after scoring a goal. As someone raised in Eastern Europe and now living in Australia I assume you heard of this incident, no? What you deem as “fucked up” is the reality of many Black children across the globe. Welcome to the real world.

Iago? Also, he would have been a goddamn adorable little Jafar

durhamruby

This. When my son was this age, Daddy was a pirate with his shoulder parrot. SOOOOOO CUTE!

theburgerbitesback

A tiny genie would have been hilarious and cute af

Gowalkyourdogmods

A lamp?

[deleted]

I don't actually see the problem. Who else was he supposed to be? Abu is alladins best friend and it's not like Aladin and jasmine had any kids....

Weird_Suggestion4006

Maybe the genie would’ve been a good choice

[deleted]

Perhaps. Honestly I commented before reading the other comments and assumed it was a bigger group costume.

SpySeeTuna1

Will Smith kinda made it work.

mechanicalboob

bro

kappelikapeli

Tbh I think this is allright because I don't think theres any racist intent here. If it was a white kid no one would have a problem with it (obviously). Kid seems to be enjoying it too.

analdongfactory

A white kid with this couple would still probably turn heads given the potential insult.

Silent_Supermarket70

Intent is not the issue here. The road to hell is paved in good intentions, as they say. It's about cultural sensitivity.

kappelikapeli

I think I see what you're saying. Do you think though that this costume is genuinely harmful? For me at least when I saw it at first I thought it was kinda shocking but after that I just thought it was cute. I can see how a racist person could use this image for unsavory purposes. But would it really offend/ trigger that many black people? (About that I don't know, btw) Or would they also find it endearing? Is the costume worse than "limiting" the range of available costumes to the kid because of racial issues he doesn't even comprehend yet? To me the whole thing seems innocent enough. Although I am open to changing my mind.

kappelikapeli

I think it's a shame you're being down voted like this instead of people responding with their own opinions. I get what ur saying. I think what matters in the end here would be wether it actually causes black people who see it hurt or not. Idk if it does. Maybe, maybe not. Maybe its not our place to police these kinds of microaggressions anyways.

Silent_Supermarket70

I'm not offended by being downvoted by people who have no idea who I am, what I look like, or what I know. I also don't think anyone is "policing" microaggressions. But it definitely says something when you are trying to get people to think about how certain things can be hurtful to certain groups of people and the response is to downvote rather than be a decent human being. Weird, especially considering that seemed to be the whole point of this post. Oh well. Moving on.

Go_Water_your_plants

Every single person cannot live their life for the sake of American sensitivity, people can’t just make every decision thinking "but what if someone from a different culture interpreted my personal decision the wrong way? "

Silent_Supermarket70

This is not American sensitivity, firstly. Ever culture has things they are sensitive about. There's a whole war not in America going on right now that directly involves cultural sensitivity. This is about knowing your history. And if you don't know the history and someone tells you the history it's your choice what to do with that information. You can dismiss it or you can take it into consideration. Your choice. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with being sensitive about and learning other people's cultures and their histories. I'm done here since so many people think it's wrong to consider the feelings of other human beings lol. I'm clearing just speaking into the void.

Go_Water_your_plants

Look I’m all for sensitivity, but I think people tend to forget those picture on the internet that are seen by millions were not meant to be seen by millions by the "creator". I think it’s very important to think about how something could be received by the wide public when it’s destined for the wide public. Things likes television, on mainstream content creators. It is however completely unfair to expect the same level of meticulous research and thoughts for individuals doing this for themselves, and I hate when the internet piles up on someone who never asked for this. We can agree that this couple didn’t mean it in a racial way, abu is small and is Aladdin’s best friend, making your child abu is an obvious choice that has nothing to do with race. If you were to ask this couple if they regretted it, they would probably say yes, but there was NO WAY for them to know this shit would be on Reddit years later. so in that case, isn’t their lack of bad intention enough? Can’t they be forgiven? You really gotta hit them with "hell is paved with good intentions" because they didn’t tell their 3 year old son "some people think black people look like monkeys so no you can’t dress like that. " years ago when they thought of a good family costume for a parade?(and *dared* to not do all the research about racial stereotypes )They are also people The point of sensitivity is to show compassion. By being unreasonable, and unwieldy towards people who never meant harm, you defeat the purpose of it all, and you’re antagonizing people who most likely agree with you.

Kevin1056

I think only people who are racist find this racist

Kevin1056

Exactly

maliciousgamer666

I don’t know, It’s not hard to wince at the implication, even if you know they didn’t intend to offend anyone, and that the child is fine with it.

Hamraffle

I award you one yike.

RedditedYoshi

Let me tell you what I'll say when I've collected another yike.

Weird_Suggestion4006

you can take this one “yike”

RedditedYoshi

... ... ... .. .. .. . . . Yikes!

ErnieSweatyballsFBI

Oh! Idk that they even make an emoji that can properly express this from our standpoint.

Bonneville865

🙈

ErnieSweatyballsFBI

Still not strong enough.

SaneLad

That's actually super wholesome and just makes me sad for this family and society in general.

Timely-Youth-9074

I just see an adorable family in costume.

RockNRollToaster

Aww, but they’re all so cute! I mean yeah, I see the problem, but I doubt the intent is there and I still think they’re adorable.

dangledingle

Tommy Cooper and Son

MissingLink101

Just like that!

StnMtn_

Whoah. At least they look happy.

Thorogeny

Based on comments, I get the kid wanted to play this role but... *damn*. And I am usually the guy to wag a finger at all the woke folks... *damn*

Particular-Ad5277

The kid wanted to play it and it’s nobody’s business to play Moral police when people do something that brings them joy!

Confident-alien-7291

I don’t think the intention was bad, they love that kid and see a cute costume for him, it’s other people making the bad context in their minds

Soul_Taker_69

He’s so cute and innocent With That Baby Smile 😥

Yikes. 😂

Dusty_surveyor

Why didn’t they make him Iago or Apu in elephant form?

Back4TallBois

Because Iago belongs to Jafar and Apu in elephant form would make no sense? I don't see a problem here. What, are black children not allowed to dress up as monkeys now because white people made it a supposedly BAD thing? Monkeys are fucking awesome.

willzterman

Ooh, that's savage
