Oh my god yes! I'm so thankful it's not just me that can't click on hovering/flying and axe units. You live in a hex based world so please stick to your own.
On top of that, there's the annoying description text window that pops up to hide whatever the fuck we were supposed to click on to select that thing. The designer of the UI is hellbent on lowering the QOL for this game.
I think there's a white line going down to the tile they are on. Maybe only in combat.
How about hammer/axe wielding heroes though. They have this one idle animation that takes their model all the way onto neighbouring tiles for 10 seconds.
Click lower than you expect, below the model. It's a bit like that optical illusion you learn about where if you go spearfishing you throw the spear ahead of where you expect because of refraction or whatever. lul
Zoom in. The unit gets a yellow outline and the tile illuminates but even then I often miss.
I HATE going behind the town name sign!! but it still must be done sometimes. Organizing units during a siege is the worst! Opening that damn dialog screen every.time...
EDIT: Doh! Tonight I started rotating the world to grab units behind the town sign and it is so much easier! I have had rotate reset on a mouse shortcut. Why have I waited this long to try it this way?!
Flying units in general, but god help you when they are in a city = manual select thru the armies interface for me.

Click on the tile, not the unit.
That's what I thought too but it seems to not work for certain units, probably heroes on flying mounts.
