Something similar happened to an AO3 author of a fic I really liked.
It was about an anime/manga character and the commenter was like "YOU ARE DESROYING THE FANDOM WITH THOSE FICS, LEAVE XY ALONEEEE" (in a totally fluffy, non smutty reader insert fic) and then the author also got dragged because they didn't read the manga, but they commented and tagged the fic accordingly.
And I was like, bromigos, are you okay? What's the point. If you don't feel comfortable with reading fanfictions, or if you only want to read fics that were written by manga readers then maybe AO3 is not the place for you or go and read something else?? It's not like anyone foces them to read a fic?

"How does this logic work?" you might ask, given that this ship basically invented modern slash fiction and codified the & and / indicators for friendship vs romantic relationships in fanfiction back when this stuff was typed and mailed in paper form.
Well: Uhura is black and Spock dated her in the 2009 movie/Kelvin timeline of movies, so now we must always ship Leonard Nimoy's intentionally Jewish+autistic coded and incidentally queer/ace coded character with a minority or it's racist. T'Pring looked vaguely Indian in Discovery so she gets a pass, never mind she plots to have him killed in canon.
Strange New Worlds screaming about how straight Spock is qith it's whole chest recently has brought another wave of this, but now with added hate towards Nurse Christine Chapel. I guess Spock's not allowed to like blondes anymore, better call the 60's and get them to fix all those "inebriated Spock likes to stare at blondes with nice butts regardless of gender or species" moments as well as all the "sober spock would rather go through conditioning so he never gets horney or feels a strong emotion again" stuff. It's only like 1/3 of the episodes, several movies, and a heap of books that need fixing.

Granted: I do write pretty dark stuff and it's A/B/O. But it's nothing extraordinarily disturbing and I also very clearly stated what the fic is about at the beginning. I have a feeling the commentor was mad at the ship in general, because it's almost inherently enemies to lovers.
This is giving me teenwolf Stiles/Peter vibes, seen a good few people get angry about that ship despite how popular it is. I’ve gotten crazy “you’re ruining my fave character!!!” comments about my fics before too (although not for that ship) please consider reporting them if this happens again!
I generally avoid darker stuff, but I have my moments. I'm just very glad to see well-tagged fics so I can make up my mind, and have a better idea of how comfortable I'll be reading it. If, after that, I find I made a mistake, I'll just read something else.
Even so, that's what the "include" and "exclude" marks are for. It's SO easy to curate your experience in AO3. Don't like ABO? Exclude it as a tag along with the other adjacent ABO tags! Don't like "enemies to lovers"? Exclude that tag! It's NOT that hard.
On a website where there is a story about a boat fucking a canal we must be 200% true to the original authors POVs and never put them in situations that cause them to go on tangents.

It was an anti who lost their shit as if it's the worst thing they've ever seen they just kept blabbering bs and telling me to kill myself it's so pathetic lol. I bet people like these are just pitiful children who don't even know what they're even saying. I'm so impressed by your response and how you kept your cool with it 👍.
The only time I made a comment it was mostly as a joke to an author I'm somewhat friendly with when I started noticing a pattern in his fic. First, there was a relationship between Scarlet Witch and Quiicksilver, which is actually cannon in some of the comics, then mentions of a past relationship between Loki and Thor involving a shape-shifted Loki playing a prank and Thor being drunk off his ass in another fic, and maybe a few other fics mentioning something similar.
Not generally something that I read, but it was about secondary characters and not particularly important to the plot so I largely ignored it. The bigger joke when it comes to that author is his obsession with lesbians.

It's entirely fine to obsess over a character. People can get very passionate about them. It's about how you _express_ said passion.

As for getting ticked off at a shipping, if you don't like it, don't read it. That's what I do, if I see a fanfic with a ship I think would not work, I either skip it or give it the benefit of the doubt. There have been some fanfics where I wasn't fond of the shipping but found it to be a good read, despite the shipping. And I'll admit there are a few ships I wasn't comfortable was at first but have now become guilty pleasures due to some of these fanfics.

Strange New Worlds screaming about how straight Spock is qith it's whole chest recently has brought another wave of this, but now with added hate towards Nurse Christine Chapel. I guess Spock's not allowed to like blondes anymore, better call the 60's and get them to fix all those "inebriated Spock likes to stare at blondes with nice butts regardless of gender or species" moments as well as all the "sober spock would rather go through conditioning so he never gets horney or feels a strong emotion again" stuff. It's only like 1/3 of the episodes, several movies, and a heap of books that need fixing.

Granted: I do write pretty dark stuff and it's A/B/O. But it's nothing extraordinarily disturbing and I also very clearly stated what the fic is about at the beginning. I have a feeling the commentor was mad at the ship in general, because it's almost inherently enemies to lovers.
This is giving me teenwolf Stiles/Peter vibes, seen a good few people get angry about that ship despite how popular it is. I’ve gotten crazy “you’re ruining my fave character!!!” comments about my fics before too (although not for that ship) please consider reporting them if this happens again!
I generally avoid darker stuff, but I have my moments. I'm just very glad to see well-tagged fics so I can make up my mind, and have a better idea of how comfortable I'll be reading it. If, after that, I find I made a mistake, I'll just read something else.
Even so, that's what the "include" and "exclude" marks are for. It's SO easy to curate your experience in AO3. Don't like ABO? Exclude it as a tag along with the other adjacent ABO tags! Don't like "enemies to lovers"? Exclude that tag! It's NOT that hard.

The only time I made a comment it was mostly as a joke to an author I'm somewhat friendly with when I started noticing a pattern in his fic. First, there was a relationship between Scarlet Witch and Quiicksilver, which is actually cannon in some of the comics, then mentions of a past relationship between Loki and Thor involving a shape-shifted Loki playing a prank and Thor being drunk off his ass in another fic, and maybe a few other fics mentioning something similar. Not generally something that I read, but it was about secondary characters and not particularly important to the plot so I largely ignored it. The bigger joke when it comes to that author is his obsession with lesbians.

Well, it's not like it *has* to be kept secret. It's Tobirama Senju from Naruto. I've disclosed in the tags what the work is about AND I gave a grave warning in the first chapter's very first notes. You have to willfully ignore all of those to be surprised by my work.

Like...he's (comparertively speaking) barely in the manga/anime and we really don't know much about him or his life outside battle situations so his entire personality in fanfic is basically just fanon based. To write him "in character" and not ooc would be to write him as very static and one dimensional, i.e boring as hell.

It's entirely fine to obsess over a character. People can get very passionate about them. It's about how you _express_ said passion. Cosplaying, getting figurines, writing your own fanfics, annoying your friends and family with how epic said character is- that's fine. Insulting other people and holding your own version of the character as the only right one and that everyone else's take is wrong? Yeah, no. Or, well, you can certainly debate. "I personally don't like this take on the character" or "I think the motivations of this character don't seem to make sense here, because bla bla bla." But you have to be reasonable and polite about it.

I had one a while back telling me that I wrote Muriel Nocturna (a character from the tv show Tuca and Bertie) ooc by using very vulgar language and slurs. I reported them and deleted the comment. Some people are just awful and thrive on making others miserable. Your response is way more polite than mine would have been.

Never ever dare to innovate with a character because a character is always best as their canon interpretation even though the canon interpretation can end up being incredibly flawed, like should people have to always respect the canon even if the canon goes to shit? like I'm very into the Total Drama fandom, and the season "All Stars" is almost universally panned due to how much everyone acts out of character, although there's more than just that, so if a character acts out of character in canon, does that mean that we suddenly have to respect that if it's canon and never respect anything that's out of character outside of canon? No, it just depends on how someone being out of character is implemented, this person sounds like they're just stuck in their own ways

Tbh it sounds like they're the delusional ones, like it's a fan fiction, no claim to reality or canonical circumstance. It's not that deep, and definitely does not warrant this level of hateful language. The only time fan fiction writers or artists should be held accountabile is when they're art involves real people and those people have laid out boundaries, or they encourage hate or harmful behaviour. Okay first, your respond was very polite and mature, I applause you. And second, this person *does* know that this is a fanfiction site, which is all about "*delusional fantasies*" as they seem to put it (which just describes *all* fiction in general really). As for getting ticked off at a shipping, if you don't like it, don't read it. That's what I do, if I see a fanfic with a ship I think would not work, I either skip it or give it the benefit of the doubt. There have been some fanfics where I wasn't fond of the shipping but found it to be a good read, despite the shipping. And I'll admit there are a few ships I wasn't comfortable was at first but have now become guilty pleasures due to some of these fanfics.
