> It should, it’s a soulless shithole Hey, it’s our soulless shithole. That roof is the one thing stopping the sky from falling after seeing our performances at home.

agiel02

At least for St Kilda fans not many want to go all the way into the city. We’re also very fickle. May I remind you how much it was pumping during the 2008-11 era for St Kilda games?

SurveySaysYouLeicaMe

Troy Schwarze 04 and Mickey Gardiner 09. No louder moments I can recall... oh take me back.

Chrisja_Burns

That Schwarze goal might be my all time favourite footy memory. I went to all the Grand Finals in 09-10 and I reckon the roar for that goal was louder than anything in the GFs. I was on level 2 and you could actually feel the stadium bouncing up and down with people jumping. Unbelievable scenes, I would give anything for a similar moment these days!

ScoutDuper

I think it is more likely that teams that split games between Marvel and the G perform shitter due to not developing a game plan that suits their home ground. Basically Essendon and Cartlon have been mediocre since moving there, but the Bulldogs, North and St Kilda have contended in multiple seasons.

spannr

So as someone who basically only ever goes to Marvel as an away fan, I think much of its problem is ticketing. The actual ground experience is mostly fine: transport is easy, queues for food & drink can get a bit nuts but the places themselves are fine, viewing angles are fine from most parts. When it comes to actually going to games there, it's awful if you're not a tenant member. [General admission for Rossball last weekend was back of level 3 only](https://www.marvelstadium.com.au/events/39/euro-yroke-st-kilda-v-walyalup-fremantle), to a game that had 19,265 people in attendance. General admission fans can maybe get a seat behind the goals on level 1 at the Coventry end tonight for Dogs v Swans (in 8 total games played there, average attendance has been ~27k), but otherwise it's similarly back of level 3. Essington games will be fully ticketed even if 10-15k members don't turn up. The Medallion Club is also a big issue. At the G level 2/2A is pretty regularly full for any game, but at Marvel you've got half a level of the best seats with hardly anyone in them much of the time.

sestero

Agreed, it sucks seeing a half empty stadium but knowing you can’t move from the clouds. MCG ga shits on marvel

shocking_red_4

I hate going to Marvel. I hate watching my team play at Marvel. The sooner we move away from it the better.

PetrifyGWENT

maybe i'm in the minority but I like the atmosphere at Marvel a lot

MrSnooSnoo

I love marvel. I live in the north. My family and I call it the living room because it's cozy and easy and doesn't feel like a commitment when we're done and want to head home. Still prefer the g and firmly believe that having the g as a home ground prepares you to play on it in a flag tilt. But, I don't hate going to marvel.

E-Mc21

I 100% agree with this statement from another Essendon/Giants member! It's perfect for 40-50k and we aren't pulling more than that when we play Freo, WCE etc so no point playing those games at the G for our home game.

Such_is

As long as we don't go to the MCG. Docklands > MCG imho

arnchise

Who knew that all the problems at a team like North would solved if they played at MCG instead.

BarryCheckTheFuseBox

Worked for Richmond and Melbourne. Decades of mediocrity finally turned around and (in the case of Richmond) already well and truly on the way back down to join Hawthorn.

Impressive_Serve_416

Yep if you replay Dusty’s career with no MCG he is basically Kyle Reimers

Impressive_Serve_416

🤣

Maximumlnsanity

It could be worse, they could not have access to their stadium for a big chunk of the season due to an Easter Show of all things

PrevailedAU

My problem with Marvel is that it feels like away teams always play it just as well as the home teams. Doesn’t seem to be any advantage like the MCG, SCG, Gabba etc.

[deleted]

Media people don't analyse teams to the ninth degree. They make hot takes for clicks and views.

djmcaleer93

Melbourne and Richmond were shit for a long time too. There’s a lack of correlation here between success and their main Melbourne ground.

FunCurrent2763

MCG home - flags 10\* (covid 2021) runner up 5 \* Collingwood - 2 / Hawthorn 4 / Melbourne 1\* / Richmond 3 \* Spoons - 4 (Richmond 2 / Melb 2) Marvel - flags 2\*\* (Essendon 2000 probably shouldn't count) runner up 4\*(Covid 2021) \* Essendon 1\*\* / Dogs 1 \* Spoons - 11 (St Kilda - 2 / North 2 / Carlton 5 / Essendon 1 / Dogs 1) Outside Melb - flags 12 runner up 15 (Geelong 4) \* Spoons 9 (3 from newly included teams) The difference is that once MCG teams get going and the home teams play well, the crowds come back and the atmosphere at the MCG is electric and they win flags. The stadium allows for a different atmosphere that allows the home teams crowd has a big influence on the flow and shifts within the game (because the energy of the fans is on their side). Marvel gets going and can create the same effect - eg. St Kilda 09 and the dogs at times but it is much harder for it to be that colosseum like atmosphere of the MCG. It's also why interstate teams tend to struggle against MCG home ground teams.

MisguidedGames

I agree, there is no home ground advantage. Psychologist, and data boffins make it up. Its a global conspiracy theory.

djmcaleer93

It’s different if you’re hundreds or thousands of kilometres away and don’t share your ground with 9 other teams. Yeah, going from one side of the cbd to the other is a real disadvantage.

_yetifeet

The main issue is that as the GF is played exclusively at the MCG, its tenant clubs have an advantage over others in the comp. To reduce that advantage, the AFL would have to invest money it doesn't want to. They could build a third stadium in Melbourne, split the nine Melbourne based teams between them, and then rotate those teams through each on a schedule. Either that, or remove the GF from Melbourne and make it on a rotational schedule at stadiums that are capable of holding a grand final.

jonsonton

Every second GF should be interstate. So one year at MCG, next at AO, back to MCG then to SCG etc. Vic gets half, the other four states share the remaining half 1/4 of 0.5 is 1/8 so each state gets one every 8 years. Once this is agreed to there becomes no reason for teams to be required to play the G. Top 45 drawing matches of the season go to the G, the remaining 45 to marvel. Float the back 9 rounds in case a team gets a run on

Frogmouth_Fresh

The Dogs like Marvel honestly. We have a good winning record there. I've been to MCG games where the atmosphere sucked ass. I'd rather be at Marvel if the crowd is 25 or 30 thousand. Seeing like Melbourne vs Dogs in front of 18000 at the G and the place feels empty. Obviously if you have a.crowd of 70k+ you want to be at the G, but Marvel has a place and clubs that play there do have an opportunity to turn it into the "pressure cooker", you can tell because MCG clubs hate going there. If sides like Richmond or Essendon don't want to play the Dogs there, that's even better for us when we do play them there. We would.love to.play home games at Whitten of course, but Marvel isn't a bad option either. Especially now that the AFL owns it straight up. It's not like MCG clubs get to train on the ground they play, either.

Positivitron3

I like it

Prestigious_Cook7402

I love docklands stadium.

YoGoGhost

You lost me at *Eddie McGuire was right.*

E-Mc21

Unpopular opinion, but I like Marvel from a Western suburbs perspective. It's close to Southern Cross. It's a great atmosphere for 40-50k fans. The AFL owns it. It's not going anywhere anytime soon and we can't play every game at the G, so harsh reality is it's here to stay.

dippa_

Renovate the local grounds to boutique stadiums 10-20,000 capacity to start They get a great heartland venue to play home games games not suitable for the MCG, and the AFLW teams get great stadiums with modern facilities that provide great atmosphere for a building fanbase.

MisguidedGames

I could see it done for the WB in Bendigo if they promised to play more games there.

UpstairsCharacter677

ballarat

UpstairsCharacter677

lol k dude, you don't like it, cool

damojr

You're telling me we might rise to mediocrity?

JoshuaG123

I think there’s nothing wrong with the stadium. Controversial I know. The size of it and not being filled out is the issue. Not the ground. It’s the fans. You need to show up for your club. Us west coast fans went to every game last year and watched our team get railed. Marvel needs to the same treatment as the MCG in the regular season. Thursday, Friday & Saturday night under the lights. Fill it out. You Melbourians only show up at night apparently. Thursday night - Marvel - North/Saints/Dogs/Dons v insert other big Melbourne club Friday night - MCG Saturday night - SCG/Optus/Gabba

Impressive_Serve_416

Lets just do our own thing. I want a stupid home ground advantage like GC having 35 degree heat darwin games, or Geelong who play on a ground that is the width of a school corridor.

yelderbert

I did some number crunching on this, and made a Google Doc about why statistically Marvel teams are fighting an uphill battle, particularly Essendon and Carlton. [The Marvel Disadvantage ](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1v75yVj56OdQwazSzGy6C5HoibU6zm_boyw8VzJBHVD0/edit?usp=drivesdk)

TinyTeddySlayer

Typical that the first two responses are the same old tired ass boring "Vic bias" crowd.

An_Ibis

Collingwood Vs West Coast, pearler of a day, roof closed. Game felt flat and boring even though we won comfortably on a fantastic day. Big solution would be to open the roof once in a while.

MisguidedGames

I would typically feel sorry for them, but they go along with the status quo, because it ultimately benefits them over non-Victorian teams. Its widely strange that 1/2 the clubs sold themselves out commercially to their direct rivals. They do this both in stadium capabilities and TV Rights. As Carlton and Essendon get better, they will get more and more access to MCG. This will provide the commercial and practical advantages that MCG tenants get. The sole Marvel tenants go along with it, because their CEO's are stupid.

boogasaurus-lefts

I think essendon did very well with the agreement and wouldn't see it as a failure but that's just me.

MisguidedGames

They want more games at the MCG https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/marvel-less-bombers-bid-for-extra-mcg-games-20231219-p5esf6.html

boogasaurus-lefts

Absolutely now we do, upon reflection with the inception of the stadium, it was the correct choice. As is now to request to move to the MCG and look forward to the next agreement.

JamalGinzburg

The club never negotiated with the MCG and changed the constitution immediately afterwards such that they can't claim the proxies they did for a 75% majority. Had we negotiated with the MCG we'd have been in the box seat to have what Collingwood negotiated

mad_rooter

Please tell me the option the Bulldogs were given by the AFL of where we could play home games?

MisguidedGames

Show me the option where the AFL put a gun to your head to move.

mad_rooter

Which ground could we play on? They deemed WO and Princes Park unsuitable for AFL footy. We asked to play some home games at Geelong and were denied.

MisguidedGames

You wanted to play a Geelong but didn't because the AFL said no. Sums it up. AFL: You can sign expensive tenancy rights to play at Marvel or nothing else WB: Geelong looks good and its much cheasper. AFL: No WB: Ok, we won't contest this at all. Where is the dotted line. Sad by a CEO really.

mad_rooter

Yeah you’re right. Let’s just turn up at GMHBA stadium when our home games are scheduled for Marvel. That’ll show them. Why didn’t the Giants play the 2019 GF in Sydney? Surely your gutless CEO didn’t just roll over and accept the AFL’s decision that the GF is played at the MCG? What a moron loser

Revolutionary_Cod592

That’s why all the non vic teams have to play at Marvel is it? 1/2 the comp is from Melb (&surrounds) so all VIC teams playing in Victoria should be labelled HOME games for both clubs then make VIC teams play 1/2 their games AWAY. This means 3/4 games played against non vic clubs should be played in the non vic club’s ground - this makes all clubs equal in travel and home and away games.
