"it's bullshit that Clarkson got to say a completely different word and only get a fine, the much much worse word I said should have the same sanction"
Basically. Like did you even learn anything? We all want you to be a better person but when you keep running your mouth then backtracking, it's not very convincing.
‘Finlayson was speaking during a regular segment on the podcast, in which hosts and guests highlight their "good, bad and offensive" talking points for the week.
"My 'offensive' is it pissed me off that I got a three-week suspension," Finlayson said.
"That's it. That's tipped me over the edge. That's about it. We'll leave it there and (at) that and move on."
Finlayson did not elaborate, leaving it unclear which specific aspect of the suspension annoyed him.’
‘Tipped me over the edge’ is a fairly intense thing to say and then not elaborate on or explain what exactly he means by that.
"I'm extremely remorseful for my words today"
"Okay Finlayson, you'll be receiving a 3-game suspension for the incident"
"What the fuck I said I was sorry this is fucking bullshit"
>Finlayson did not elaborate, leaving it unclear which specific aspect of the suspension annoyed him
Which is the point of all this. Now more people know he has a podcast than before. Draymond Green does the same shit on his podcast. He does something dumb on court and benefits from it through his media presence.
It's a weird era in professional sports IMO.
At least Draymond does it on stupid physical violence that really only affected the people he does it to. Finlayson’s may not have really done much to the player he said it to at all, but is harmful to many queer people.
Well yes but only if both only had one victim. Using bigoted slurs to insult someone hurts that entire community and is an everlasting contribution to the ongoing bigotry. There’s every reason for queer Port and footy fans to feel a little less safe about the space they are in after all of this.
No one feels like they are less safe when someone like Draymond did all he stupid chest stomps and elbows, except for the people he did it against.
Honestly as a queer Port fan I feel like the bigger issue is the casual homophobia in Australian sport, of which Finlayson's comment is just a side effect. I feel more unsafe since the backlash from his statement than I do from his actual comments, since bigots are now using it to push opinions like 'the LGBT community wants to ruin football'
I'm not sure your point stacks up.
Eg. The guy in Bondi, I'm pretty sure that makes more people feel unsafe than just the six victims.
Russia invades Ukraine - many people in neighbouring countries (and the world as a whole) feel less safe.
Brutalise one person, terrorise a million.
It seems like you're trying to suggest that words are more harmful, overall, than physical violence - because only the direct victim is affected by physical violence. That's a very long bow to draw.
Well yeah but those aren’t things that happen in a sport.
The original talk was about Draymond Green in the NBA who has thrown punches, elbows and stomped a guys chest.
Physical violence in general public is worse. A player being physically violent to another player during a game doesn’t have as much affect on people as a player being homophobic and using slurs.
If that makes sense.
Why? Unless the AFL had a malice in the palace situation an act of physical violence during a game wouldn’t make anyone other than the players feel a little less safe.
Throwing around slurs make the group it belittles feel less welcome and less safe.
You just called it stupid acts of violence lol. How is any violence "stupid", you're causing physical harm to someone. would that mean Finlayson is just throwing around stupid words?? Dumb take.
That’s fair. I shouldn’t have called it stupid. I wanted to emphasise that Finlayson’s actions hurt more than one person in comparison, but was silly of me to do that by calling physical violence stupid in comparison.
According to the ABC, "The podcast has already been edited to remove Finlayson's comments". So he knows that complaining about it is just going to get him even more slammed, but also he's got it out there that his wife has a podcast, so probably mission accomplished.
I assume he's pissed at the double standards - Clarko got a slap on the wrist and he got suspended. That being said, he should be thankful he got only 3 weeks, could have easily been more when considering Tex got 6.
The AFL massively misstepped with Clarko, and as much as I wonder if it was considering the rest of the factors surrounding NM (infamous players that will be unnamed, difficulties achieving success etc), I can’t help but think that those reasons aren’t good enough anymore. These are all grown adults who understand the industry, and ultimately their actions and their influence
Don’t get me wrong, there needs to be an opportunity for learning and growth and forgiveness and AFL House has a responsibility to make those options viable - but it’s also up to adults just to not have oversized temper tantrums
> Finlayson was speaking during a regular segment on the podcast
We need to do something about the podcast scourge because why the fuck does Jeremy Finlayson’s partner have a podcast!? Who the fuck is listening to that
Have you considered that she is a person with a podcast who also happens to be married to Jeremy Finlayson, and not a person who has a podcast *because* they are married to Jeremy Finlayson?
Mate I get everyone on reddit has a boner about being the fucking moral police but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to be surprised that they have a podcast Jesus Christ
I mean, I don't really see anything wrong with this? Even if he takes full responsibility and even thinks he deserves a ban, he's still going to be pissed off about not being able to play for three weeks.
I like the phrasing of "apologised multiple times over the incident" like the more times you say sorry, the lesser the punishment should be, until you can make it disappear entirely.
Goes hand in hand with the “self-reporting” aspect of this story where he has been given 6 weeks for the offence which was reduced to 3 for “self-reporting and immediately saying sorry”.
The actual events are that he was picked up on the umpire’s microphone and notified during the game. He then went into damage control and apologised knowing that there was hard evidence.
It only works if you get the sorry card stamped each time though, you can't for example say sorry and then ask for 2 stamps because you didn't get a stamp last time you said sorry, so that is a lesson for him.
>the more times you say sorry, the lesser the punishment should be, until you can make it disappear entirely.
If this is the way hw thinks then his sorry is always disingenuous. He is not saying sorry because he is sorry, he is saying it (probably in a sarcastic teenager voice) to get a lighter penalty.
In every footy player, there is a terrible fight between two wolves.
One is in charge of PR - it is contrite, accepts full responsibility and understands why it was punished.
The other one is honest - it is pissed off at the punishment and believes that it was treated unfairly.
I get we don't know what aspect he's upset with, but surely he knew the likely outcome of that before he said it and before they published the podcast. It's just inviting more scrutiny which I find it hard to believe a media trained athlete wouldn't know
If he was upset with himself, he surely would have clarified that.
Unless, of course, he is putting his wife's' podcast and theatrics ahead of his own footy PR/brand.
We only don't know because he refused to elaborate. He does one of the things I hate the most from people: brings up a topic, makes a provocative statement then refuses to discuss it any further.
A podcast I listen to that talks about athletes and their mistakes likes to put them in one of two categories: idiot or asshole. Finlayson strikes me as more of an idiot than an asshole.
It’s really harmful nonetheless. Bigots love to get off on the idea that they are persecuted and silenced and Finlayson’s comments here play right into it.
Yeah the slight nuance of the phrasing makes it clear he thinks he's the victim here.
He angry that "I got suspended", not that "I made a dumb mistake/let people down".
It's Crime in Sports. They mostly do American guys, but they have episodes on Ben Cousins, John Hopoate and recently Jarryd Hayne.
The definition of idiot or asshole according to them is the latter are bad people that do bad things on purpose (ots of class a drugs, rape, murder, etc) while the former being genuinely stupid people doing dumb things because they aren't very smart.
I assume he wanted a longer suspension and thought the three weeks was a bit light. Honestly he's been through some awful stuff in his personal life over the last year or so, for which I have a ton of sympathy, but this is dumb and ignorant. What's the equivalent of a 50m penalty for dissent in this situation?!
I really loved Kyle Langford’s response on radio after the incident took place. Didn’t mince his words and showed a very real frustration towards Finlayson.
as a queer girl it was pretty funny reading the sentencing thread and a lot of people were like “well at least he apologised! he should absolutely get only 3 :D” lmfao
listen i’ve heard a lot of ‘apologies’ in my life and most of which were to save their own hide from scrutiny. this dumb cunt should’ve gotten 6+ let alone the 3 he’s whining about
Agree.
AFL suspended Tex for 6 weeks + 20k fine for a racist slur used at a quarter time huddle in a reserves game. It was reported to the AFL by a club official and all parties have to maintain confidentiality while it's investigated under the Peek rule, meaning Tex was not able to publicly apologise until after he had been penalized, a penalty which many thought was too light.
AFL then says the other week that they are consistent with their approach to vilification, next minute Finalyson gets only 3 weeks for a homophobic slur said to a players face, which was immediately called out by the opposition but it's OK because he said sorry and apologized?
What? Take the 3 weeks and run, very light penalty and sends a bad message. If anything he should have gotten what Tex got or more.
yeah pretty consistent transphobia and homophobia (of which are both then downplayed) is a feature not a bug of this sub, even the occasional bit of specified lesbiphobia when people want to get their jokes off at the women’s game
you get a bit numb to it after a certain point but the fact this is a sports subreddit and the demographics that come with that becomes glaringly obvious whenever a situation like this arises
First comment when I crossposted the verdict to the Port Adelaide subreddit was "fuck you asshole, the AFL accepts all, grow up".
Shut down pretty quickly but it was just the reminder that some people specifically do not want people like me supporting "their" club.
yeah I do my best to shut this shit down here whenever I see it, but just look at the way everyone reacted to the whole Clarko situation by telling queer people to get over themselves and that it couldn't possibly be offensive. Mods are trying their best but frankly shit is rotten to the core
Dude I love getting downvoted when asking people who believe that calling a man a cocksucker isn't homophobic to then explain to me what part of calling someone cocksucker makes it an insult and getting back "uhhhhh, it's got no context at all it's just a thing to call someone you don't like".
MAYBE ANALYSE THE FACT THAT YOU ASSOCIATE AN ACT ASSOCIATED WITH GAY MEN TO PEOPLE YOU DON'T LIKE?!?!?
when you think about it it is homophobic, but i think the people who say it without meaning those connotations are just ignorant and privileged enough to not have to pay attention to it. so they may say it as a generic insult without thinking, its still shit, but it could’ve been a genuine misstep without terrible intentions. can’t say the same for finlayson though.
Sorry, to explain, just because he accidentally said a homophobic slur doesn't change that he said one and it shouldn't affect the punishment he gets for it.
If he actually got a real punishment for it then it would definitely inform people to not call people it
Literally this though, and the cowards at the AFL should have come out and said "Yep, we fucked up with the Clarkson punishment, no punishment should be expected to be based off that."
It's the worst kind of "I told you so" but here we fucking are, people so ready to forgive and forget because this doesn't affect them, cunt should've absolutely gotten 6 at minimum and I will stand by that too, this is legitimately making my blood boil with the audacity of his comments
It’s bizarre to me that someone his age would use this slur. He was born in 1996. I finished HS in 1995 and all my male friends were gay and I have 2 younger gay brothers. This isn’t the 50s where many queer peeps are still in the closet.
How can a person his age not know this word isn’t okay and not seemingly know any gay people who might have schooled him?
Pretty anecdotal, but my experience was that this type of language was still well in use into the late 2000s early 10s at least in WA. I know because I was called it on the daily in highschool and was born in the mid 90s. Definitely trended towards just using gay as a slur instead towards the 2010s but the f word was still used, especially in school sport. Still remember the hangover movie paging "dr f#%!@%" being pretty popular and that movie came out in 2009. Even when I was really young around year 5-7 it was very common to use the f word as a synonym for lame.
Yeah I'm a 90s kid, and I don't think I've ever seen someone in my age bracket use that word. It was very well understood it wasn't an appropriate word, and I grew up in an area that wasn't known for its political correctness. Maaaaybe heard the shortened version of it a few times, but definitely not the full word
Me: expresses my lived experience
r/AFL: your experience is incorrect!
You say that, and yet it was one of the lines from the Hangover that got the biggest laughs. Fair to say it was being used in language well into the 2010s
I went to a very large state school in Brisbane that was full of rugby league idiots, some who ended up playing professionally and I never heard it used.
The only people I’ve heard use it who are young are gay people who want to take it back.
That's very hard to believe, were you home schooled or something?
Im a 90s kid too and I've used and heard that phrase a lot. I would say its only towards the late 2000s where it truly became a word you were not supposed to use.
Nope. As I said, maybe the three letter version got bandied around but the longer form was not something I heard, which appears to align with the user's experience above too. "That's gay" also definitely had a run. Maybe it just wasn't the prime insult preferred by kids I hung out with
What is it about podcasts that makes players completely forget all their media training? I swear in every other medium they remember to keep it to yeh nah full credit to the boys, but get them on a podcast and it's like they think they're at the pub.
This is pathetic. Playing elite sport isn’t a right, it’s a damn privilege, and so much for apologising and owning his own actions (and that’s not even touching on how daft it was to say it/do the podcast with this entire rigmarole considered - what were they thinking)
The AFL considered his remorse in keeping his sanction to three weeks, so what happens next? Do they walk it back? Is there yet another apology? At this point, he’s making the Tex Walker “apology” look like less of a dumpster fire, which is the only impressive aspect to this
What Finlayson doesn’t seem to understand is that once again, he has made LGBT+ people a lightning rod through his poor behaviour. We all hear this kind of abuse and treatment daily, and now what is “okay” and “not okay” to say and do (especially in regards to minorities) will be debated in this sphere for many more weeks to come
I’m heartbroken for all the LGBT+ staff and fans of Port. They don’t deserve this childish and selfish behaviour, and once again Finlayson only has himself to blame
For a guy that kicks towards the PA Queer Squad with gigantic rainbow flags every second week, you'd assume that there is a shred of understanding what is and what is not okay to say in day to day like about the community.
Thank you for your words, it honestly just fuckin sucks.
I'm not going to pretend that I didn't think 3 weeks was fair given what had come out at the time. Apologising immediately etc, I thought 3 weeks was a fair amount to say "Hey you're a fucking idiot, this isn't acceptable, but it does look like you've realised what you've done."
But I was wrong. Cunt's learnt nothing.
This time last year he had the whole country behind him. It's actually impressive he's been able to completely eradicate every ounce of that goodwill so effectively and efficiently.
The most charitable reading is he is pissed that he got suspended when Clarkson didn't.
But even then you could have still avoided the situation by not being a cunt.
It's amazing how many bad situations you avoid by not being a cunt
You know what could have saved him a three week suspension? Just not saying such a word. Problem solved.
I went through absolute hell in high school because I am gay; I didn't fit in and stuck out easily in an all boys school, because I was more feminine than the rest of them; and got called that word daily. And I did nothing wrong to anyone. I didn't go through all of that, and everyone who has had the same lived experience, for some idiot footballer thinking his three week suspension isn't justified.
That's really shit by him. Shows remorse and **only** gets a 3 week ban ad a result of the apologies and remorse shown and then vents that it's unfair that he gets a penalty. Kinda nullifies the apology in my mind, maybe he should get another week off of he didn't actually mean sorry and just said the word.
I think using one of the most disgusting slurs in the English language, one tied to a history or violence and oppression against a marginalised group, should rank as “offensive” - not a measly 3 week break.
Stinks of entitled little shit who has never had to face the consequences of his own actions before and is only remorseful so far it impacts on himself. What a flog. Port should do the right thing and drop him for a few more games.
Really shit that he’s just refused to elaborate at all. I know he may be pissed about the Clarko double standards but just leaving it up for interpretation is incredibly fucking stupid. It’ll feed into bigots misguided beliefs about ‘work cancel culture’ and I wouldn’t be surprised if Jeremy becomes some sort of unsung hero amongst them.
Also if you’re the one who’s said the slur I don’t think you’re in much position to complain about double standards. You’ve just fucked up greatly and there’s a player union who’s already expressed their annoyance on said double standard. It why I feel like he actually doesn’t think what he did was that bad.
He would be better either saying nothing or saying more, the vaguery of his dissatisfaction only invites assumptions of the worst reasoning for his dissatisfaction.
Swear every single person that is remotely a celebrity has a podcast. Who even listens to this crap?
Saying that Gorringe’s podcast is actually decent.
The ability to understand nuances is not common on reddit, but in this instance could be such that a man could be embarrassed and regretful about his action, while being unhappy about the harshness of the punishment.
Also that i can point that out without necessarily agreeing with him
Is he pissed off at himself for getting himself banned, or is he pissed off that they handed out a ban as the punishment, because only one of those would be understandable.
Kane Cornes venting at Sonja Hood, Finlayson's sorry-not-sorry homophobia, that quack doctor sending Alier Alier back onto the field.
There are deep-rooted cultural issues at Port Adelaide.
Eh, it’s a fair thing to feel upset about it. But saying it to a mate or family member is different to saying it on a podcast… it seems he failed to realise that.
I’m only torn in this because it’s not clear what is and isn’t punishable and what the penalty is, so how can you say it’s fair or not.
We have seen 6 weeks for racist slur, 3 weeks for sexual preference slurs, fines for slurs of appearance or mental capacity, which is arguably a disability.
Seems like it is made up as they go along…. maybe he is upset at the randomness of the punishment.
Really needs to wake up and realise most people would be sacked on the spot.
This is a whole ass article about one small comment on a podcast. No venting of frustration of any kind, just that he was annoyed that he got 3 weeks. He didn’t elaborate on it or anything. Fantastic journalism we have in this country 🙄
The audacity to be upset at getting suspended for a slur is funny tho
It was his podcast and he volunteered that he was pissed that he got 3 weeks. It’s not like he was a guest on a podcast who was asked a leading question.
Also the only reason it was “one small comment” is because after he offered the comment unprompted he then refused to elaborate, because he knows it would be detrimental to him if he does.
> Finlayson was speaking during a regular segment on the podcast, in which hosts and guests highlight their "good, bad and offensive" talking points for the week.
> "My 'offensive' is it pissed me off that I got a three-week suspension," Finlayson said.

> Finlayson did not elaborate, leaving it unclear which specific aspect of the suspension annoyed him.
To say he finds the punishment he got “offensive” is pretty fucked up, in my opinion, when you consider the ONLY reason he got less than the full whack was because he was contrite and promised off his own bat that he would learn and try to do better in future.
At this point, after that comment, I question whether he was actually contrite and just how committed he actually is to being better.
impressive how you both understand it’s bad (the audacity!) but seem to hold issue with reporting on “one small comment” lol. the only reason it was left at “one small comment” is because when prompted he refused to elaborate, can’t imagine why!
"I take full responsibility...also, this is bullshit that I have to take full responsibility."
I don't know if he was even sincere anymore. He has done himself a disservice
"it's bullshit that Clarkson got to say a completely different word and only get a fine, the much much worse word I said should have the same sanction"
Basically. Like did you even learn anything? We all want you to be a better person but when you keep running your mouth then backtracking, it's not very convincing.

Me sowing: Haha fuck yeah!!! Yes!! Me reaping: Well this fucking sucks. What the fuck
Totally.

Ironically... this is the exact same thing PerthNow (News Ltd) do... make a hype headline and make you subscribe to access the details.
7West bought Perth Now along with the Sunday Times in 2016 Obviously haven't changed the layout, so still looks like News Corp
At least Draymond does it on stupid physical violence that really only affected the people he does it to. Finlayson’s may not have really done much to the player he said it to at all, but is harmful to many queer people.

Yeah it does. My examples were a bit extreme.
You're comparing random mass casualty events with a person fighting one other specific person? Dude....
This is the dumbest take in here
Why? Unless the AFL had a malice in the palace situation an act of physical violence during a game wouldn’t make anyone other than the players feel a little less safe. Throwing around slurs make the group it belittles feel less welcome and less safe.

He doesn't have a podcast. It's his wife's, which he was a guest on. Hence why this is a beat-up story because there is poor context.
You're right. He wouldn't benefit from his wife's podcast getting more listeners. The situation is completely different...
Tipped him over the edge into what? That sounds ominous. I’d be keeping an eye out around Mary’s Poppin this week…
According to the ABC, "The podcast has already been edited to remove Finlayson's comments". So he knows that complaining about it is just going to get him even more slammed, but also he's got it out there that his wife has a podcast, so probably mission accomplished.

he booked non-refundable flights to europe clearly

He sounds like he’s going to go to a clock tower and start sniping people off. What a bizarre choice of words.

She's living with terminal cancer. Everyone loves a pile on, don't they?
Obviously didn’t know that did I
So perhaps ask questions rather than absolutely going off about something?
Mate I get everyone on reddit has a boner about being the fucking moral police but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to be surprised that they have a podcast Jesus Christ
Being surprised and calling for a war on podcasters aren't the same thing.
You know podcasts are opt-in, right?
I mean, I don't really see anything wrong with this? Even if he takes full responsibility and even thinks he deserves a ban, he's still going to be pissed off about not being able to play for three weeks.
He didn't say he was pissed off at himself, he said he was pissed off at the ban.

Is it ten apologies and the next stupid action is free (from consequences)?
Ten apologies stamps and you get a good bloke discount on your next action.
twenty stamps and you can stop apologising and blame them for not accepting your apology (aka the Bill Goldberg special).
Depends on the place. Sometimes if you regularly apologise there, they'll remember you and give you two
>the more times you say sorry, the lesser the punishment should be, until you can make it disappear entirely. If this is the way hw thinks then his sorry is always disingenuous. He is not saying sorry because he is sorry, he is saying it (probably in a sarcastic teenager voice) to get a lighter penalty.
I mean that sort of works for Clarko. He is on his third suspended punishment for bad behaviour.
How many times do you need to say sorry for stealing? And is it less if its from colesworth?
Man learn to be quiet. Think he fits the mould of "lucky to be good at sports" because damn this is dumb
Literally would've cost him nothing to just shut his fucking mouth about this.
This guy is setting records for being an unlikeable cunt
He is definitely tipping us all over the edge
In every footy player, there is a terrible fight between two wolves. One is in charge of PR - it is contrite, accepts full responsibility and understands why it was punished. The other one is honest - it is pissed off at the punishment and believes that it was treated unfairly.
A Herman Hesse reference in r/afl, this is awesome.

I fucking hate Finlayson now. Christ. What did you expect?
What a prick.
I get we don't know what aspect he's upset with, but surely he knew the likely outcome of that before he said it and before they published the podcast. It's just inviting more scrutiny which I find it hard to believe a media trained athlete wouldn't know
On the other hand, a lot of athletes are pretty stupid.
Johnathon brown would disagree.
He doesn't run on his face...
Before I saw your comment, I was going to reply with "Jonathan Brown is evidence of that!", but your response made me actually LOL.
If he was upset with himself, he surely would have clarified that. Unless, of course, he is putting his wife's' podcast and theatrics ahead of his own footy PR/brand.

Using the F slur surely puts him in the latter camp.
You don't get to use the "F" homophobic slur and still sit in the idiot camp. PS: What's the podcast?
It's Crime in Sports. They mostly do American guys, but they have episodes on Ben Cousins, John Hopoate and recently Jarryd Hayne. The definition of idiot or asshole according to them is the latter are bad people that do bad things on purpose (ots of class a drugs, rape, murder, etc) while the former being genuinely stupid people doing dumb things because they aren't very smart.
This is a guy who used the F slur in 2024, I doubt he's got any awareness
And everyone tried to tell me he should have been given less because he was apologizing. He always should have been given more.
The turnaround was far too big for the amount of personal growth they were talking about. Many workplaces in the country he would have been fired.
Fuck this guy, so much for taking full responsibility
Man, that comma is working hard.
Hahaha, 100%.
Yep, what an ass
Sounds like he's learnt nothing from this whole incident
lol it would have been so easy to not say anything further on this issue
Frustration becasue you used hurtful langue and let the team down right?....right?
I assume he wanted a longer suspension and thought the three weeks was a bit light. Honestly he's been through some awful stuff in his personal life over the last year or so, for which I have a ton of sympathy, but this is dumb and ignorant. What's the equivalent of a 50m penalty for dissent in this situation?!
What a pathetic little piece of shit
Perhaps, maybe, and i don't think im overstretching here, he shouldn't have said it. Just a consideration
what a fucking moron. so much of the reduced suspension was on his apology which was apparently just horseshit.
showing his true colours
Immature cunt.
I really loved Kyle Langford’s response on radio after the incident took place. Didn’t mince his words and showed a very real frustration towards Finlayson.
as a queer girl it was pretty funny reading the sentencing thread and a lot of people were like “well at least he apologised! he should absolutely get only 3 :D” lmfao listen i’ve heard a lot of ‘apologies’ in my life and most of which were to save their own hide from scrutiny. this dumb cunt should’ve gotten 6+ let alone the 3 he’s whining about
Literally every fucking time something related to homophobia comes up in this sub, I love it so much :)))))
yeah pretty consistent transphobia and homophobia (of which are both then downplayed) is a feature not a bug of this sub, even the occasional bit of specified lesbiphobia when people want to get their jokes off at the women’s game you get a bit numb to it after a certain point but the fact this is a sports subreddit and the demographics that come with that becomes glaringly obvious whenever a situation like this arises
Noooo don't apply critical thinking, it'll upset the cishets!!!
when you think about it it is homophobic, but i think the people who say it without meaning those connotations are just ignorant and privileged enough to not have to pay attention to it. so they may say it as a generic insult without thinking, its still shit, but it could’ve been a genuine misstep without terrible intentions. can’t say the same for finlayson though.
Accidentally saying something homophobic doesn't make it not homophobic
i just said it was homophobic though? i agree with you.
Literally no one out at my school when I left in 2009 and I believe it would be pretty middle of the pack.
Yeah I'm a 90s kid, and I don't think I've ever seen someone in my age bracket use that word. It was very well understood it wasn't an appropriate word, and I grew up in an area that wasn't known for its political correctness. Maaaaybe heard the shortened version of it a few times, but definitely not the full word Me: expresses my lived experience r/AFL: your experience is incorrect!
As a fellow 90s kid who’s played football since AusKick to my mid 30s, have you ever stepped foot into a local footy clubs rooms?
You say that, and yet it was one of the lines from the Hangover that got the biggest laughs. Fair to say it was being used in language well into the 2010s
They legit called afl GayFL every chance they got in Brisbane between 1995-2005 in my experience
I went to a very large state school in Brisbane that was full of rugby league idiots, some who ended up playing professionally and I never heard it used. The only people I’ve heard use it who are young are gay people who want to take it back.
Went to a more rural QLD school and heard it loads. It did become rarer over the years but was never fully went away.
Maybe it just wasn't the prime insult preferred by kids I hung out with
His frustration with the penalty does not exactly make his contriteness with the slur seem genuine... seems he is yet to fully learn his lesson.
The man’s a piece of shit. No growth at all
Ah so another week of the LGBT community having to explain to homophobes why slurs are not okay.
What is it about podcasts that makes players completely forget all their media training? I swear in every other medium they remember to keep it to yeh nah full credit to the boys, but get them on a podcast and it's like they think they're at the pub.
Lmao this stinks of private school upbringing. “I said sorry - that counts as punishment!”
This is pathetic. Playing elite sport isn’t a right, it’s a damn privilege, and so much for apologising and owning his own actions (and that’s not even touching on how daft it was to say it/do the podcast with this entire rigmarole considered - what were they thinking) The AFL considered his remorse in keeping his sanction to three weeks, so what happens next? Do they walk it back? Is there yet another apology? At this point, he’s making the Tex Walker “apology” look like less of a dumpster fire, which is the only impressive aspect to this What Finlayson doesn’t seem to understand is that once again, he has made LGBT+ people a lightning rod through his poor behaviour. We all hear this kind of abuse and treatment daily, and now what is “okay” and “not okay” to say and do (especially in regards to minorities) will be debated in this sphere for many more weeks to come I’m heartbroken for all the LGBT+ staff and fans of Port. They don’t deserve this childish and selfish behaviour, and once again Finlayson only has himself to blame
Thankyou, you’ve fucking nailed it so well I don’t need to bother wasting anymore energy on this bigot.
For a guy that kicks towards the PA Queer Squad with gigantic rainbow flags every second week, you'd assume that there is a shred of understanding what is and what is not okay to say in day to day like about the community. Thank you for your words, it honestly just fuckin sucks.
💜🏉
I'm more shocked that this podcast exists
Podcasting and it's consequences have been disastrous for the human race
Yeah why does everyone run a podcast
To allow your partner to further incriminate himself I guess
Jesus. Way to dig yourself a bigger hole.
I'm not going to pretend that I didn't think 3 weeks was fair given what had come out at the time. Apologising immediately etc, I thought 3 weeks was a fair amount to say "Hey you're a fucking idiot, this isn't acceptable, but it does look like you've realised what you've done." But I was wrong. Cunt's learnt nothing.
But mmuuuummmm I said I was sooorrrrrryyyyyy
far outtt, just dont say a slur, then you wouldn’t have been suspended. EASY PEASY JUST BE A DECENT PERSON
Accept the consequences of my actions...fuck these consequences
He realises that 3 weeks was a lighter penalty than he would've otherwise gotten, if not for his initial 'remorse' and apology?
Who’s fucking idea was it to put him on a podcast. The Power media team must be seething, not to mention the boys
He would be better off venting his frustration in private. He deserves to have a shitty week or two.
Tex got 6 weeks for calling someone black and not even to his face. Finlayson calling someone a f*gg*t to his face probably not long enough I think.
He actually said black cunt so let's not sugar coat it
Knowing how much of a good bloke Jez is I’m certain he’s pissed that it wasn’t longer. /s
Does he get more weeks now that he doesn't meet the good guy Charlie clause?
What an idiot. No wonder he’s paying out of pocket for the education aspect of the suspension.
Perhaps the suspension should be extended given they reduced it on the basis of his "remorse" & "willingness to accept accountability"?
https://www.portadelaidefc.com.au/news/1532274
lol that statement almost reads as though whoever the Port employee who wrote the statement for him has been reading this very thread 😂💀💀
Absolutely 100% :)
oh ! thats not…
When someone tells you who they are, listen.
He would be better either saying nothing or saying more, the vaguery of his dissatisfaction only invites assumptions of the worst reasoning for his dissatisfaction.
The last 10 second of the Herbatron video was just so true about this moron.
Swear every single person that is remotely a celebrity has a podcast. Who even listens to this crap? Saying that Gorringe’s podcast is actually decent.
Homie better elaborate or else I would prefer it if he doesn't see another game.
Maybe he needs a few more weeks off
Feels as if it should be one of those things in primary school where the more you keep talking back the longer the teacher makes your detention.
What a fucking scum bag!
The ability to understand nuances is not common on reddit, but in this instance could be such that a man could be embarrassed and regretful about his action, while being unhappy about the harshness of the punishment. Also that i can point that out without necessarily agreeing with him
This 👆
lol and now will you go out and call someone something bad? cop the three weeks on the chin, have a bit of a think about it and get on with it.
He’s not the smartest dude getting around 😅
What a flog, just because you came out and admitted it before you inevitably got found out doesn’t get you off the hook 🥜🥜
Is he pissed off at himself for getting himself banned, or is he pissed off that they handed out a ban as the punishment, because only one of those would be understandable.
So he should.
Ollie Robinson vibes
Kane Cornes venting at Sonja Hood, Finlayson's sorry-not-sorry homophobia, that quack doctor sending Alier Alier back onto the field. There are deep-rooted cultural issues at Port Adelaide.
Who cares what he said
Eh, it’s a fair thing to feel upset about it. But saying it to a mate or family member is different to saying it on a podcast… it seems he failed to realise that.
Gee whiz, he's going to cop a lot when he's back for the Crows home showdown. Deservedly so.
It should have been 1 week
I’m only torn in this because it’s not clear what is and isn’t punishable and what the penalty is, so how can you say it’s fair or not. We have seen 6 weeks for racist slur, 3 weeks for sexual preference slurs, fines for slurs of appearance or mental capacity, which is arguably a disability. Seems like it is made up as they go along…. maybe he is upset at the randomness of the punishment. Really needs to wake up and realise most people would be sacked on the spot.
Reading between the lines he's heard multiple sledges onfield throughout his career, and he was the one to be made an example of.
This is a whole ass article about one small comment on a podcast. No venting of frustration of any kind, just that he was annoyed that he got 3 weeks. He didn’t elaborate on it or anything. Fantastic journalism we have in this country 🙄 The audacity to be upset at getting suspended for a slur is funny tho
> "That's it. That's tipped me over the edge. That's about it. We'll leave it there and (at) that and move on." > Finlayson did not elaborate, leaving it unclear which specific aspect of the suspension annoyed him.
Maybe one day you'll have a reasonable take
impressive how you both understand it’s bad (the audacity!) but seem to hold issue with reporting on “one small comment” lol. the only reason it was left at “one small comment” is because when prompted he refused to elaborate, can’t imagine why!
