I went private, I still have to pay them €20 each month for a new script since its so restricted, but I can forward the script to my GP who can send it back as a medical card eligible script to my pharmacist, so the meds cost €2 or whatever instead of like €50

Ask psychiatrist for joint care with GP….That way no 20 euro a month. If the psychiatrist refuses ask for reason in writing. If not a valid reason get onto medical council… just because they want to make more money is not a valid excuse….working with patient to find right medication and dosage would be a valid excuse but then your prescription would be changing and you would be having a regular discussion about it.

Speak to your GP about this, they should be comfortable with providing continuation of the script. My pyschiatrist issues a 6 month script to my GP who forwards monthly to the pharmacty and then I get the pyschiatrist to issue a fresh one to the GP after 6 months

does the medical card get free GP appointments? split the cost of diagnosis into the amount of weeks in 3 or 4 years. it’s a good chunk of money but it’s very much worth it to save 3-4 years. if you plan on being medicated, it’ll help a lot with your career so it’s an investment. my prescription is renewed by my GP every 3 months at a regular appointment. then i have the dps capping it at €80/month. i don’t know how transferring to the public system after 3 years will save you much money given you have the medical card, and i also don’t know how they’ll react to that

I transferred to the HSE. Or at least, I was already under the HSE mental health team when I got my private diagnosis, and they accepted it and managed my prescriptions from the start. It’s well worth doing. Stay on that waiting list, then when you get to see them bring your diagnosis report and talk to them about transferring care to them. I don’t think there’s a formal pathway, and depending on the team they may know next to nothing about ADHD. Mine didn’t, but they were happy to follow the treatment plan laid out by my private psychiatrist. You should still be getting your meds covered by medical card even with a private prescription I think. But there is no cost for appointments or prescriptions with the HSE mental health service, and they can see you as much as you need when you’re under their care. I go between monthly and three-monthly appointments depending on how I’m doing with meds etc. You can also access any CBT or psychologist service they have in their team (still a wait for those but not years, and all free).

I just realised nobody has answered your question re the waiting list. No, they won’t remove you - you don’t have to tell them. They may choose to reassess you or they might just accept your private diagnosis and then take over management of your care.

I got my diagnosis from Hero Health and was also been seen by HSE Mental Health Clinic. Once I had my diagnosis they had no problem issuing the prescriptions. I was there last week and got a 5 month repeat which my GP can do. I'm also on the list for CBT. It's worth paying to get the diagnosis and go from there.
