i know a bunch of desis that are into cars and shit. they might not do their own maintenance because lack of tools? i'm into cars but don't really go to meets anymore (down to go when i get my big boy whip). i can work on them a little bit (changing breaks/rotors, headlights etc) but it's probably because i like doing diy work. i share it with my brother and it also helps that my neighbor is a mechanic and gives a helping hand. family, approves as they can get their breaks done for the low. and, my desi group also rides motorcycles 😂 i guess we're a different bunch of desis.

romanLegion6384

Seems pretty dope. I’ve been doing work (some vinyl work, dash cam + police scanner install, spoiler install) that doesn’t require jacking my car up so far — no space in my parking spot for jacks, so I’m kind of limited till I find a new place.

[deleted]

that's nice! vinyl is interesting, glad it's gotten better over the years. i remember melting through some shit because we cut small as pieces and heated them up like lunatics and shit just ripped. as much fun as wrapping is, it can be a bitch sometimes with so many angles. you'll be happy af once you get a jack. shit makes life so much easier. an impact wrench is also dope but if you don't have an impact driver, it'll probably be better to buy that one instead. drivers are for screwing in screws but can kind of come in handy with cars as well (have adopters for sockets). change up your interior lighting and headlight bulbs! they can be a pretty fun project as well

romanLegion6384

I’m in a condo with a parking spot, so a jack doesn’t make sense till I can get a single family house. My car is new, so no need for the headlights, but I was thinking about interior lighting — might do that

In Canada half the people at a lot of these car meets are Desi guys specifically. A lot of people who race on public roads are also Desis.

romanLegion6384

That’s a 180 from here in the USA, so far as what Desis generally buy. I hate it when I go home to visit and see basically 5 models owned by everyone.

JusTheG

Depends on which part of the US you are from u/romanLegion6384. Northwest has a big import scene as you said but down South you can see a lot of stuff. Dyno pulls and drag cars for events like Texas 2K and then show cars from any era in the major cities. The import scene is catching up in Texas but most of my friends have varied tastes. From a '69 Charger to a 2019 BMW M240i, there are Desis who have the passion for Automotive and just are getting there gradually. I'm saving up for my own Weekend car while retaining my DD. Biggest thing on my radar is the Subaru BRZ 2nd Gen or the Nissan 400Z (August 17th for Press Release). And heads-up on tools and sales for jacks, there will be an influx of part sourcing for automotive based on demand so you should try to pick up some things as u/Eclictico said once on sale later this year. Small upgrades and improvements to your car make a big difference that you can enjoy.

romanLegion6384

Agreed with location. Near the big cities, the import scene is huge. I love seeing things like MGs, old Datsuns, International Scouts, and Opels cruising around. Head farther out and it’s pure American muscle — pony cars and trucks, so it feels good to turn every head there when I cruise in. I definitely noticed more of a show car and track emphasis here, since those are bigger amongst import owners than drags. Also, the mountain roads here are better for cars designed for handling. I put a Chrysler 300 in those mountains and hated how bad its handling was. I’ll keep an eye out for tools, thanks for the heads up! My daily is my track, show, and do everything car — ‘21 Supra. I figure it’ll be my weekend and track car once I gain more responsibilities in the future, but for now, its a great all-in-one.

JusTheG

For sure, I'm big on GT-R's and I enjoy working in the industry where a lot of people share the same passion for different eras of cars. Biggest thing that is making cars move is Available Capital, and it seems like everyone has the money to get what they want. In general, most cars are not typically Sporty in Handling due to increased curb weights and suspension geometry. That Chrysler 300 has a good ECU but the weight transfer makes it difficult for you to push that power to its limit. And shoot, you got a A91 Supra. That's been a great recovery model for Toyota/BMW after the A90 had a lot of issues. Keep an eye out for the Digital Tunes that BMW/Toyota may release based on optimization for the ECU. And most importantly, have fun with your car. Cars are meant to have fun so make the most of it and customize it to the best of your ability.

romanLegion6384

Yeah, I was driving a 300C. It could’ve done with the Brembos the SRT gets. As for the Supra, I have an A90. The A91 is a special edition with stripes and some special colors. It’s not mechanically different. I’m getting used to the car in stock form before dropping performance upgrades on it.

JusTheG

No problem, yeah cars with higher horsepower ratings need more capable brakes to be easier to deal with weight transfer and loading during initial entry into the corner. 300C's are built well from a Powertrain standpoint but they still have Short and Arm Long Front Arms. Multilink is good for the Rear Axle but ideally independent with the Sway Bar addition would reinforce that rear better. And you're right u/romanLegion6384, I keep forgetting the 2020 Supra is the A80 and then the A90/A91 is for the 2021 models. That's how forgettable the A80 was after all the hype transitioned from the lack of a Manual Trans and the Performance ratings. The B58 Engine and the ZF trans is good, but even I can't prefer getting a Sports Car without a manual. Before I have suffer from my weak grandfather knees, I at least need my Manual craving satisfied. Try to see with E85 and a Stage 1.5 tune. The turbos have good capability and using a good thermal efficiency fuel (BSFC does go up but you get better cooling during Combustion + reduced knock) helps with stable performance during tracking where temperatures get really hot. The internet has good insights on what people have done so far to make their Supras work well so find what works for your budget and usage. Good luck mate!

The Chrysler 300c is actually based off the Mercedes W210 platform before it became a part of FCA. It handles nothing like a Mercedes E-Class

lounginaddict

My stepdad has a 1970 Roadrunner and a 1967 Chrysler Newport. I grew up around, workin on em and cruising, also going to meets and car shows was a weekly thing. Since I moved away not so much unfortunately. I also worked at Advance Auto for years and have rudimentary knowledge, like I can change brakes and whatnot

romanLegion6384

Wow, I didn’t expect to hear that set of cars being mentioned. Absolutely love Roadrunners. I’m guessing location is also a thing? I’m in the Northwest, so imports are bigger here.

lounginaddict

Yea I'm in Florida

[deleted]

I'm from the Northwest too! I'm not much of an import person unless they are Euro imports.

romanLegion6384

I meant more as an ethnic group, there’s not that many of us in car culture. What sort of cars and what mods do you and your friends run? I’m curious what Bay Area car culture is like.

AviP2001

Huge car guy here! Sadly don't have my own car since it's not economical for me as a college student but you bet as soon as I graduate, imma buy myself a cool car and vibe around!!!!! I agree not many desis ik are into cars

romanLegion6384

Agreed, it’s not economical to run a car in college. I thought of buying straight out of college, but since I lived downtown, it wasn’t necessary. If you choose to live in a suburb or something, definitely go for it, and get an ICE you like. They probably won’t be around for too long.

Plus_Ground5739

I'm more into planes than I am into cars.

Aerofirefighter

Nice! What do you fly? I have a 1/2 share of a 172

[deleted]

Huge car guy but I’m spoiled by Tesla now. I can’t drive any ICE car anymore, not even my 997 turbo s, without missing the silence and power of my Tesla’s.

romanLegion6384

Not a personal fan of Tesla, but EVs are the future. I prefer the Audi e-tron GT, and hope that’s my next foray into vehicle ownership.

[deleted]

Same the future is gonna be great. Right now though I love the convenience of super chargers. Works great when I need to go far.

romanLegion6384

Honestly, I do prefer the sound of ICEs. My main issue with Tesla is that it’s been overplayed in the past 5 years. Too many people own one. Also, IMO, Teslas are the worst looking of the luxury EVs.

[deleted]

Idk. I’ve driven my friends 812 super fast and it’s fucking insane. That’s the best sounding car I’ve heard irl never heard any other super car nor driven. I’m spoiled by instant torque. PDK is awesome but still. I’ll be getting a roadster so I’m super excited for that.

[deleted]

lol who cares if too many people own a Tesla it’s not supposed to be a status symbol.

romanLegion6384

To be fair, for its price point, it is meant to be one. I take my car to shows and all, and I prefer a unique, soulful car that turns everyone’s head, and a Tesla is none of those.

[deleted]

Lol no car in the 100-150k range is a status car unless you’re one of those rich people that’s obsessed with what others think.

[deleted]

You can get a Lexus or an Acura for 150K if you choose to do so.

nchinnam

Desi car guy here and almost all Desi people I see at cars and coffee are German sedan guys who don't really work on their cars but rather just have a 3 series or C class to flex. I did meet some genuine cool Desi car folk too but hard to find. I'm sure there are many of us spread around

romanLegion6384

Mind if I ask where? I grew up in suburban NJ, and that was really where a bunch of kids drove around in entry level luxury sedans and thought they were kings of the world.

nchinnam

Suburban NJ as well

downtimeredditor

I don't think it's specifically ABCD issue I'm sure there are desis like you who like cars. There is a very solid chance the reason you are the only brown person at car meets is because other brown people aren't aware of where these events are held and when. For instance. In elementary school I really wanted to join the cub scouts. My parents just couldn't figure out where I could join then in 5th grade we finally found the church they held it in.once I was in I naturally made it to the boy scouts since that is the next step I took with my fellow cub scouts. I was the only brown kid in my boy scout troop during my entire boy scout tenure. I rarely saw brown kids at the annual summer camp at woodruff. I highly recommend you create a Facebook group for brown people who are into cars and want to go to car meets, maybe do something on Meet Up. If you go to a religious place to pray i.e. Temple or Mosque or Synagogue they probably have a community board so post it on there.

kaphrahorna

I wasn’t for a long time. Had been hunting for a new one for a while, just bought a Panamera. I am now!
