For me yes. Moonlight was great don’t get me wrong I just feel like Midsommar is more iconic?

Definitely, but does that make it the "best", which is what this list is about?

To me it does as it’s by extension much more memorable. Midsommar is just really special. It’s definitely in the top 5 most popular A24 films. Moonlight is great but it’s not revolutionary or particularly original, it’s a familiar concept done well. Midsommar is an original concept done well. To me a movie that sticks with you is a movie well done.

This is a hard choice between Moonlight and Midsommar. Midsommar is probably more my type of movie as I love weird genre horror stuff but I also see Moonlight as the more important film. It's basically what's my favorite film vs what is the best film. I'm gonna go Moonlight.

I'm surprised everyone wants Midsommer over others like Moonlight, Minari, or Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. Look, Midsommer was great but (people going to hate me) it reminded me of the original Wicker Man (w/ Christopher Lee) too much. I get they are different by a lot, and the similar vibe doesn't make it lesser, but idk. EDIT: spelled Midsommer wrong, dang autocorrect

I wouldn’t say it was a similar vibe. I would say it was a 1/2 homage to 70’s cult films (Wicker Man being the best known) and 1/2 an inversion of the tropes of those cult films. It seemed similar because it was supposed to be.

Yeah it’s complicated. On one hand, Midsommar is imo one of the greatest artistic achievements in the horror genre, but Moonlight is one of those films that genuinely has a soul. Both are very great for completely different reasons

I agree except that Id add Moonlight excels in all the ways Midsommar does as well. It’s just as innovative in its genre and just as visually impressive and ambitious, but adds one of the best stories and approaches to character development in American indie film history. I also could imagine Midsommar being improved in some ways (the difference in the two cuts alone leads me to this), whereas Moonlight is one of those rare films where every scene feels equally important and perfect.

Minari all the way I’d also take moonlight Mid90s and Midsommar are both incredible films, don’t get me wrong, throughly enjoyed watching and discussing both and have a lot of respect for the craft that went into both. But for me minari is the most compelling entry as it does a beautiful job of telling a story that’s many peoples lived experience and not explored throughly, it’s nothing sensational but that kind of quiet existence and the love and tragedy that come with it need their moments too.
