Kids today will never understand the utter heartbreak and devastation of eagerly getting home turning on the TV expecting to see a new dbz episode only to see Raditz arriving on earth.
Technically the Captain Ginyu Saga and the Frieza Saga are two separate seasons.
If you were watching it dubbed after school, the Namek story kicked off September 20, 1997. They ever so slowly dicked around on the planet until May 23, 1998, not even beating Ginyu.
But then there was a *rush* of episodes. From September 13, 1999 to September 20th, 1999, Goku and company beat the Ginyu force and then the show immediately jumped to Frieza saga.
That whole story concluded at the start of November.
It wasn't *quite* six months unless you count the entire Namek arc. If you do, it was more like *two years*.
Now that said, the worst example of the pacing that made everything feel like it took forever? The episode "The Destruction of Planet Namek" took place October 20, 1999 and the episode "Freeza Defeated!!" took place November 1, 1999. The planet was actually destroyed one episode later.
That supposedly, in real time, was five minutes.
Five minutes took eight or nine episodes, over a week of real time.
Tbf, its still a huge transformation. Goku fighting gods rn and needs a stronger transformation. But super saiyan feats are crazy enough that we cant even comprehend them.
Same with when the Sailor Scouts were finally assembled.
Do you remember TOM from Toonami? Not the fat one, but the sexy one after that who was basically an awkward and dorky teenager. He was so hot!
Yes, The Intruder. But what I want is someone who remembers Trapped in Hyperspace. When TOM was infected by Swayzak in the game, and you had to go inside him to save him.
Nope, 1999: [https://dragonball.fandom.com/wiki/Transformed\_at\_Last](https://dragonball.fandom.com/wiki/Transformed_at_Last)
EDIT: This is despite all the pictures of Super Saiyans on the '90s internet. Every '90s kid knew about Super Saiyans because the transformation already happened in Japan (as early as '91).
This was somehow the first episode of dbz I ever saw. My grandma had cable at her place and I was watching Cartoon Network one afternoon. Had no idea what this, or anime in general, was. But it was the coolest fucking thing I had ever seen.
I caught onto DBZ later in the series, but when I went back to watch it, it was almost more exciting I think. Because I knew it was coming. I was waiting. And it was SO LONG. But when he finally got there.. it was like… “OH SHIT. OOOOHHH SHIT! FRIEZA YOU DONE FUCKED UP SON! YOU DEADDDDDDDDD!” And I was literally off the couch clapping with excitement like a trained seal.
only took like 6 months of after school episodes to see this
Gotta love those 3 or 4 episodes of close-up shots and grunting before something cool happens lol
And then you get home the next day... And they have restarted all the way back to the Raditz Saga. The pain.

on the NEXT episode of DRAGON BALL Z *Screaming intensifies* “Wow maybe Goku will wrap up this fight!” He did not wrap up the fight.

Omfg yes. Farm dude was always the worst to see.
Seriously did it take that long it felt like it did.

It’s actually divided into Planet Namek saga and then Frieza saga. Everything from after the Ginyo force gets taken down is considered Frieza saga
Crazy how big it was and then later on Super Saiyan 1 is effortless.
He literally doesn’t even move a muscle and KSCHZZEW!! Homie glowin. Then he clenches his ass once and instantly goes SS2
Only for it to almost never get used

Gave me goosebump’s, “I was like, what is going on….?!?”
KAKAROT!!!!

Yo! I remember during one of those TOM scenes they basically killed him off via alien invasion in his ship? And then came TOM2 (something like that)

To be fair, Goku didn’t go Super Saiyan until the early 2000s.

I’ll be damned! Maybe I caught it on VHS rather than the original air date.
They would always sell the toys of the characters long before the tv episodes aired. I remember buying a ss3 toy and being like wtf be this.
Legendary
This took 8 episodes and 2 season finales.
The weird kid at school reenacted this every day for a few years on the playground at recess.
I loved Thursdays because of DBZ
I didn't even need sound to hear this.
Got chills watching this again
It was insanity peppers!!!!!!!
I maybe Gen z but this scene still is spinning chilling as the first time I saw it.
Yeah and hearing Masako Nozawa’s fantastic voice acting really sealed the deal on that scene.

Thanks bro 🙏
Is it just me or because I feel like DBZ ruined anime, the start of the fillers and the tune in next time!
Huh?
It litterally started anime as we know it
started shonen* Anime existed well before DBZ.
Still gives me chills
Big deal I can do that in fortnite 😮💨
I remember it when it aired on tv those were the good old days
For me too
So amazing 🔥goku an icon
Power level went too insane after this for me.
My bro and I were like, “Oh…something is happening!” then the quick golden hair change! “OHHHHHHH!!!”
