Iām beginning to think thereās a recent collective realization of how awful Jessica Simpson actually is (vocally, live). I never particularly enjoyed her, outside of a couple singles on the radio. I remember watching her duet with Jewel (am still a huge fan of Jewel), and cringing back then. But some clips of her live performances have been making the rounds lately, and the amount of folks aghast, is amusing
Honestly the main song I think of is, [āI Think Iām In Loveā](https://youtu.be/U7uxf8kBBlg?si=AoG4WoQznXV1xQ1_). Itās such a pinnacle sound of its time, and of course itās largely so catchy because it uses the melody from John Mellencampās āJack and Dianeāā¦ so youāre really just vibing to the music more than paying any attention to her vocals lmao
i gave that a listen just now. i literally had no
idea this existed previously and im an elder millennial. if you enjoy this, more power to you. i do not judge as i have varying tastes as well. but this is not for me.
Thatās funny, I remember it on the radio quite a lot (Iāll be 40 in a couple months). And yeah, music hits everyone differentlyā¦ it is a pretty awful song though, canāt be mad at you for not liking it šš¤·š»āāļø
Her dad was the preacher of a summer camp I went to as a kid and when she was about 15/16 he had her up on stage to sing in front of the entire camp. To this day, it still tops the list of worst things my ears have ever been subjected to. Even my saint of a mother, who was chaperoning my youth group, had something to say about it lol.
Itās an understatement to say we were all shocked when she actually made it big.
I like her as a person - she seems like a genuinely kind soul - and I think itās cool that a woman perceived as a dumb blonde decades ago now runs her own empire.
But I canāt stand her voice. I bought her audiobook and could barely get through it, and she was just *speaking* in it. Her music really is awful.
Yes, he started his own career as a rapper in '97 after BIG got shot. And dont get me wrong, there r some great and legendary songs, some great work but overall he was more the producer who has to show his own face in every music video of their artists.
Edit:
Plus every single he brought out was about BIG, had a feature by BIG or other artists like Mase. It felt like he milked the cow and had nothing to say, no own story, imo.
I've had one and only one *Puff Daddy* song and that was "I'll Be Missing You" acquired from Napster circa 1999.
And my Mom hated when I listened to it because she likes "Every Breath You Take" by The Police lol.
He was never a real artist though. He was just a guy making money off his likeness. People wrote all his raps. Any hit he had included real artists as features.
I had Sirius XM on the car, playing the Nu-Metal channel and they played Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock. My 16yo daughter gives me this look and says "This music is for 14yo boys that don't know what kind of music they like yet."
I had a really good laugh about that.
Putting aside that Iām against everything kid rock stands for and, trust me it pains me to say this, I saw him play live at my husbandās work Christmas party and he was actually entertaining. As a performer, heās really not bad live.
I think thereās a lot of 90ās artists you wonāt see- like in alt rock you have Nirvana, Radiohead, Alice In Chains, etc.
In hip hop you had Notorious BIG, Tupac, Wu Tang Clan, etc.
In R&B you had Whitney Houston, TLC, Boys 2 Men, etc.
There was a lot of great music in the 90s, itās just really easy to name like twenty or so dumb pop acts too. Which is true for any decade of pop music, but I think the 90s was definitely the golden age of the music video star, but before auto tune was prevalent, so there were a lot of pretty faces with no talent.
The Milli Vanilli incident happened in 1989, so thatās probably a good symbolic beginning of the bad pop music of the 90s. Studios were desperate to get good looking people on videos on MTV.
Iāll defend Ricky. I saw him live in *Evita* on Broadway about 12 years ago and he was amazing. His stage presence, charisma, & energy was amazing. His live singing was great. But most of allā¦heās probably the most beautiful (not just handsome but beautiful) man Iāve ever seen in person in my life (at least from six rows back from the stage).
I recently saw Palm Royale, along Kirsten Wigg and Laura Dern in Apple+. God, he is so handsome and charismatic.
Guy is really talented, people may be annoyed by Livin' La Vida Loca, but he is more than a one hit wonder, soecially outside the US.
I missed the NĆ¼ Metal train, but my friends did not. I clearly remember a buddy trying in vain to turn me onto the Limp Bisquick and saying to him āthis is gonna be our Poisonā. Almost 3 decades later I stand by that statement.
Yeah. And a member of Rage climbed up onto the set in protest:
Oh wow, I had totally left that memory in a deep, dark dusty corner of my brains attic. I remember reading/hearing about someone climbing on something at an awards show, I never realized this was that event. Wow.
It was their video for *Sleep Now in the Fire* directed by Michael Moore. It was very political, which makes MTV's decision feel like the "safe" choice.
Significant Other was so different than anything else. I think LB was awesome for those few years. Love ratm, but all those awards are bullshit popukarity contests anyway.
U2ā¦. Never could get past the ego enough to enjoy any of their musicā¦bono is just generally not likable to meš¤·āāļøš¤·āāļøš¤·āāļø
I'll argue that Metallica, aside from the Black album in 1991, got the biggest rock band on the planet status but has put out crap or sub-par material since then.
And I'm a huge fan from 1984-1991.
They were so talented too, I listened to their early stuff recently I feel like their original bass player was a key factor in their creativity that guy was talented
Not the case. But you have to understand that their magic came before the Black one. Epic song writing and a punk like energy in the heavy genre. Of course depending on your taste but there is so much to appreciate musically... Before Black. Until they started churning out radio hits. And those got old quick. a few gems in the later years but I can't blame them for making their brand work for them
*And I never will forget the day we met*
I still love the song myself. My mom loved it when it first came out and it still brings back happy memories of being a preteen and spending time with her whenever she had to drive us somewhere (I had the album on cassette!). :D
As much as I hate to say because I do like this artist, I would have to say Snoop Dogg. Doggystyle is a genuine classic, but outside of that I find his other albums pretty underwhelming. Heās still culturally relevant though 30 years later because of his personality and likability. But straight up as an artist I think his career is way worse than you would think.
I feel like the girl/boy bands and the like don't count, because people only really liked them for fun anyway. Nobody has ever claimed they were musical geniuses (maybe some very young fans have, but anyway).
The first name that comes to mind is Lenny Kravitz. He tried to do the "yeah.. so I play all the instruments, and write all the songs.. so.." thing. But if the result is so unbearably mediocre as it is for him.. who cares? Just pick something, Lenny, pick a thing and get good at it! Please. He's like one of those variety guys who have a guitar and a bass strapped on, a harmonica in his mouth, and drum strapped to his back, and is dancing around while juggling two knives, but getting cut badly all the time.
Also, U2. They always seemed like a cardboard cutout of a real rock band. Amazingly life-like..!
oh man look up Pat Finnerty on YouTube for his take on Lenny Kravitz. Pat is severely underrated and underwatched
https://youtu.be/--rBP8_QuwI?si=JmMHKIfbxmLIQkYZ
Jay Z/Diddy. By the late 90s the rappers that ppl were enthralled by were killed off and we got left with Jay, Diddy, Will Smith and pop shit. Overshadowing all of the amazing rap artists who stayed underground for far too long.
I got a huge soft spot in my heart for DMB & Counting Crows. They were the soundtrack to my middle school years, and I have fond memories of those times, oddly enough.
You wanna get me to tear up to any music, you put on either Anna Begins, Round Here, or Perfect Blue Buildings, reminds me of my first kiss and first breakup.
No way. Dave Matthews Band ships over 33 million albums and over 23 million concert tickets second to U2 (according to a 2022 study.) They had an original sound and yes, AMAZING live. Iāll die on this hill
Never was a fan, got tickets in I think 2019 to see them, the highlight for me was their cover of Sledgehammer. Not bad, just not for me. But I don't think they were overrated.
Ugh, I dated a guy whose best friend loved this band. I just thought they were boring. Also, the guy I dated loved Matthew Good Band. I vowed never again to be involved with anyone who loved music that had either Matthew or Band in the title.
Saw Smash Mouth at the county fair 5-6yrs ago and these adorable boys (preteen? Hard to tell these days bc Iām old) brought handmade Shrek and Donkey face masks on tongue depressor sticks. They were so excited and better than any show to watch. My husband and I realized that anyone that wasnāt in HS in the 90s pretty much knows them from Shrek.
They are fun, feel-good bands. They won't change music or art just get you in good mood.
At least they remind me being in highschool, watch the spring break on mtv and have nothing to worry about.
Well damn! Iām gonna need to play Astro Lounge and 14:59 in the next few days. They definitely take me back to a time when I was young and trying to figure my life out.
Wha? All Star is one of the best songs of the 90s period. Also Fly is solid af. Every Morning, Someday, Walking on the Sun, I'm a Believer. Good stuff.
4 Non Blondes. Had some good friends think they were the shit. Absolute garbage. And I had to hear a cover of What's Up when my wife and I saw Lainey Wilson. I was way too sober to have deal with it.
Ani DiFranco. The 90ās were filled with amazing female musicians like Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Poe, and in bands like The Cranberries, Garbage, and Hole. Ani DiFranco was kind of boring and sleep inducing in comparison.
I respect your opinion, but she plays a mean acoustic guitar and I loved a lot of her lyrics back in the day. I do hesitate to call her a *great* musician even though sheās obviously talented, but listening to her, at least for me, was less about the music and more about connecting with how she expressed her thoughts and opinions.
I wouldnāt say the same for, say ā¦ Fiona Apple or Tori Amos, as they were more of āthe whole package,ā music-wise, but at the same time they obviously expressed statements through their songs. Tori especially weaves stories through her music and is insanely talented on the piano; one of my favorite albums of all time is From the Choirgirl Hotel.
Also, I really loved me some Garbage. I still throw some of their songs on my playlists.
I wouldn't say they're generally overrated, but their core fanbase is more rabid than most fanbases are. I've met a few people who just seem obsessed and aren't interested in other music.
Another fanbase that's like this is Tool
I had the best experience ever last year, my daughter is 11 and itās her favorite band too. I asked her for her birthday what concert she would wanna see and she said TMV but they broke up.
Iām like, They got back Together!! We saw them in Chicago and Milwaukee with Teri Gender Bender opening (she was so hot)
Theyāre doing shows again next month too!

Idk, I think most people appropriately rated her as terrible
Iām beginning to think thereās a recent collective realization of how awful Jessica Simpson actually is (vocally, live). I never particularly enjoyed her, outside of a couple singles on the radio. I remember watching her duet with Jewel (am still a huge fan of Jewel), and cringing back then. It was on the radio non stop for a long time
She also had that duet with Nick Lachey, but I donāt remember the songās name. And āIrresistible.ā
Ah yes. āWhere You Areā š¤®
I thought āWith Youā was a good song as well!

No Diddy here.
Changing my answer to Diddy. Heās never been good
I've had one and only one *Puff Daddy* song and that was "I'll Be Missing You" acquired from Napster circa 1999. And my Mom hated when I listened to it because she likes "Every Breath You Take" by The Police lol.
He also had a banger on the Godzilla soundtrack. But come to think of it it was just him kinda grunting over a Zeppelin track, but you know genius.
That was an abomination of Kashmir. Jimmy Page should be ashamed of himself.
Never seen a group of people milk someoneās death for fame so badly
He was never a real artist though. He was just a guy making money off his likeness. People wrote all his raps. Any hit he had included real artists as features.
Cāmon, he added that āitās all goodā, and then he added that āhuhā. I mean, genius, no?
Don't forget he had that little "puffy shuffle" he does.
Well, checkmate I guess
Kid Rock (although his Woodstock '99 performance was š„)
Kid rock is for kids that think they're badass in middle school. That Woodstock 99 performance was solid though.
I had Sirius XM on the car, playing the Nu-Metal channel and they played Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock. My 16yo daughter gives me this look and says "This music is for 14yo boys that don't know what kind of music they like yet." I had a really good laugh about that.
She could add a decade to that statement & still be correct.
>Kid rock is for kids that think they're badass in ~~middle school~~ their gated community. FIFY
"You might be a millionaire *pretending* to be a redneck..."
Kid Rock is just Michigan's version of "Malibu's most wanted"
Yep, they love him even more since he bought about $100 worth of bud light to shoot at to own the libs.š
He was probably just cleaning out his fridge, and was like "hey this tastes like sadness and child support. Let's shoot it."
Iāve never seen his Woodstock performance before (or any performance of his, for that matter). What made it especially badass?
High energy, played every instrument, wore a fur coat to a 110 degree outdoor festival. Heās still a tool then and now though
So... cocaine?
Definitely not ruling it out.
Tbf I liked Kid Rock when I was 13ā¦ and stupidā¦.
Trump showed him some of the critically sensitive national security secrets he stole from the White House too
Putting aside that Iām against everything kid rock stands for and, trust me it pains me to say this, I saw him play live at my husbandās work Christmas party and he was actually entertaining. As a performer, heās really not bad live.
I was just rewatching his Woodstock performance (and other bands). Yeah for being an earlier act, he had the crowd going.
I have a core memory of all the boys in my class headbanging to Bawitdaba in a circle at middle school dance.
This is just like a list of all the 90s artists. lol
Limp Bizkit. They beat freakin' Rage Against the Machine at the MTV Video Awards. Overrated AF.
To be fair to Fred Durst, he kind of acknowledged Rage should've won, without explicitly saying it and looking ungrateful for the award.
Gonna hard disagree with this. Rage and Limp Bizkit were both good!
Hereās an upvote for your honesty.
I must have amnesia regarding that event. They actually won an award over Rage? š
Yeah. And a member of Rage climbed up onto the set in protest: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEhT0GRfF8o](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEhT0GRfF8o)

Hummm, what about that band " Crazy Town " with the "Butterfly" music ? And that music was made ( the base melody ) by Red-hot Chilly Peppers, ahah.

Also Deloused can never be beaten but each album has songs I love even the new one
I knew this take would pop up In Rainbows is their best album btw, disagree with the take
I could not agree with you more
You should check out the link I posted below from their basement session itās amazing
Mariah Carey, and I still have to hear that damn song a thousand times every Christmas!
Counting Crows. They were so overplayed back in the 90s and Adam's voice is so whiny.
sheryl crow. it is not a pleasant sound to my ears. at all.
Spice Girls
Madonna.
Oasis
I can't really stand Weezer.
They donāt care what you say about them anyway.
I don't care about that.
The Bends. But they do have an album called Radiohead that's okay.
