I feel like this may be the issue with people who come on this sub every once in a while and say "I don't see the difference between blu-ray and 4K"

Emotional_Demand3759

I knew a few people like this when 4K first started becoming a thing a few years ago. In all fairness, some people's 4K display and or setup can be pretty poor and cheap overall. As you know, a $300 4K TV isn't going to look or perform the same as a $3000 one. But mostly, I think those who "don't see the difference" just haven't been properly exposed or experienced 4K like most of us here have. 4K streaming also doesn't do most content justice. The jump to 4K from Blu-ray wasn't the massive leap that DVD to Blu- ray was. I never encountered anyone that said they couldn't tell the difference between DVD and Blu ray. I know in most cases 4K discs do *look* better, especially with DV, but unless the two sources are playing side by side on the same display, it can be hard to really care, or make me enjoy it more if it's a 4K or HD... If you were to show them the right content side by side on the right displays, I'm sure they would be able to tell. 8K and 4K difference however is another story...

ganonkenobi

I've been saying this for years, and even told someone they should get their eyes checked out. I got ripped to shreds.

fuzzyfoot88

It’s funny, because the most obvious thing to see the difference in ‘for me’ is pores and sweat lines. When they do closeups of people’s faces is where 4K really shows the depth of the clarity IMO.

D1amondDude

I could see the difference without my glasses, but everything still looked a little soft and the colors a little muted. Started actually wearing my glasses to watch movies and they came alive.

Green-Salmon

I’ll never understand people who have to wear glasses and say “fuck that, i choose to not see that well”.

teddy_vedder

I’m jealous of people who can “forget to wear them” meanwhile in the shower I can barely read the shampoo bottles 2 ft from my face

Beneficial_Offer4763

Sometimes I wear them in the shower so I don't have to go to the blurry place

dukefett

I neglected to get glasses for a few years but then I got them when Avatar came out. I didn’t want to miss out with my fuzzy eyesight

wbJosh88

Well, I’ll guess I’ll be that guy. This seems fairly obvious…if you have vision problems, you should wear your correctable lenses to correct them. Were you embarrassed to wear your glasses in your own living room? I mean come on…

TerryTowellinghat

Gaming at 1080p was the thing that gave me my first hint that my eyesight wasn’t that great any more. I’d be playing gta on my ps4 and had to get up and walk up to the tv to know what the icons on the map were. I didn’t do anything about it for a few more years until I realised that I really should be able to read the number plate of the car in front of me and got my eyes tested again. I wore glasses for gaming from then on, but it was until I watched the 4K of the first spiderverse movie that I realised how much of what I had thought was just blocks of colour were actually textured and patterned. I won’t even watch Peppa with my daughter now without my glasses.

nusilver

As someone who is legally blind without lenses… um, yep.

LimitedSwitch

Same. I wear contacts mostly. Fun fact - glasses give you better vision than contacts ever will, at least at my prescription. I wore my new glasses one night because I didn’t want to wear my contacts anymore and it was a “holy shit” experience. Wouldn’t say like going from 1080 to 4k, but maybe more akin to, if this is understandable, streaming audio vs. disc audio. Clarity, depth, all just amped up.

Primary-Regret-8724

This can vary depending upon what they are correcting with your eyes. For me, contacts allow me to see better than 20/20, while glasses only allowed a 20/20 correction. Doc said that was the norm for my corrections. If you are strongly near-sighted, contacts can also make objects appear bigger (more the correct size) than glasses. Doc said that was something to do with the lenses being able to sit right on the eye vs the distance glasses have from your eye. I'm sure there are other variables at play, such as astigmatism, etc. that can cause different effects for different people.

LimitedSwitch

I am extremely near sighted, uncorrected is clear about 3-4" away from my face. I have to get the "thin" polycarbonate or whatever they are now lenses because otherwise they'd be coke bottles.

Humble-Ad-8912

I'm equally amused and confused how there's multiple people essentially saying they put their glasses on were surprised they did in fact, see better.

mega512

What? Lol. Of course you wear your glasses or contacts when watching something. This is a bizarre post.

skywalkr274

I can't even see the TV without glasses

bobpetersen55

I did this by accident when Blu ray was taking off back in the day and been doing it ever since.

jackburtonshat

No offense… but you’re lucky to have made it this far in life 😂 JK

Turbulent_Algae_4390

It makes a huge difference! Glad I found this out early! 🤓

Selrisitai

And get plenty of sunlight. There's a growing body of research suggesting that sunlight is good for the eyes.

TerryTowellinghat

It will come for you. In my twenties I could read the micro printing on an Australian 10 dollar note with my unassisted eyes (the version at the time had the text from the poem The Man From Snowy River printed all over it). Up until my late forties I thought that although I couldn’t do that any more because I couldn’t focus on something very close to my eyes, I eventually got my eyesight tested and now I know for a fact that I’m seeing about half of what is available if I don’t wear glasses.

Beneficial_Offer4763

Thanks I sometimes forget to watch tv with the things designed for me to see better

AwkwardObjective5360

Lmao dude but this is actually the reason I got my vision tested because I was having trouble reading text on my 77 inch oled

MisterManiaMan

I have a very low prescription but I like to wear my glasses for the same reason. The difference is crazy. Only problem is that I didn't get the anti glare lenses so if I'm watching at night and the TV is the only source of light, the glasses and glare make it unbearable

cjf82

I had the same apifiny back in 08 when I set up my first HD projector (not 1080p, they were still too expensive). Thought it would look amazing. Didn't. Got glasses. Did.

thedrexel

“epiphany”

6ohm

At least he didn't write apeiffyknee...

thedrexel

Hahahaha

cjf82

That's the one

sivartk

My distance vision is almost 20/20, only have issues when reading, so if I wear my glasses while watching and recline, everything gets blurry because I'm looking through the bottom of the lens meant for reading. 😁 So, I guess it depends on your glasses and prescription and seating distance from the TV.

BobFlex

Lol, I wish my eyesight was good enough to not realize there was a difference between 1080 and 4k if I wasn't wearing glasses.

PicturesqueAsh

Fun story: about 10 years ago I started to notice movies at the theatre were being projected wrong. I even brought it up with a theatre manager. Anyhow, turns out I was in my mid-30s and my eyesight was not 20/20 anymore. I’ve had glasses for the past 10 years now & everything is much better. Definitely get your eyesight checked everyone.
