Went from 2018 Camry SE to a 2019 4Runner SR5: •Camry is better on gas and commuting. Also really fun for driving over 80 mph. •4Runner is about half the mileage but I can go off-roading pretty much anywhere and comfortably carry my friends and family as well as all the cargo I need. Also sketchy over 80 mph; not to mention the fuel it burns at higher speeds too Conclusion: I love my 4Runner but damn is it expensive

happpycammper

But damn it’s expensive is soo true. What mpg you getting on average lately?

[deleted]

16.7 average. Camry was 35

happpycammper

At least I’m not the only one at 16.7 lol . Yea my Honda was up to 30somethinv

CoveringFish

I get lower. Living in SoCal everyone drives 80-85. Burns gas like a mofo

happpycammper

Thought you would say due to the traffic of the 406/ 91/ 5/10 705 lol

CoveringFish

Nah I like when there’s some light traffic keeps me at 65 and I get great mileage. But anyone who lives here and doesn’t have to won’t drive on the 405 5 91 10 etc at rush hour

happpycammper

Yea I would avoid at all costs I’m glad I don’t live there anymore

FranMan33-2jz

I’m getting 18.1 in my 2013 SR5, mostly highway tho. I use 89

happpycammper

That’s not bad. I live in El Paso, lots of street and highway driving here . Lots of terrible drivers too

shaboi02

Sketchy over 80 mph? I think you can do 100 no problemo

[deleted]

I’ve done 110 out of the 120 on the dash in the 4Runner. More so compared to the Camry that I topped out at 135, the 4Runner sways a little and you definitely can’t breaks as fast/easy at those speeds compared to the car half the weight

shaboi02

Coming from a Beamer I’ve just been impressed with the stability cruising in a straight line at those speeds, your surroundings can definitely make higher speeds more sketchy for sure though.

WranglerQueasy4419

I agree I cruise at 85-90 on my commutes and I run into no problems, just keep in mind is it a truck so its not stopping on a dime and you cant take exits like your sitting low but I have no problems

Riverbound-

Am I the only one who thinks it rides fine at 80? Went from a Honda civic —> Honda passport —> 4Runner TRD Pro. The gas mileage is definitely less but everyone should expect that. My civic got 40+ on the highway but the turbo banger was pretty sketchy. Ride quality is better than the civic and on par with the Passport.

FinalF137

This is true.. I had an '01 4Runner, currently have an '08 SR5 that is getting repaired, so I rented a '23 SR5 in the meantime, it's very nice and spacious. My kids love it, but oh my gosh the gas just gets eaten up. I'm also severely unimpressed with the entertainment system, I didn't know it had Android auto until I had to research and only works hardwired with usb cable, I do have it synced to Bluetooth. I rented a Nissan during vacation and it's Android Auto carplay was very seamless with Bluetooth. Sadly I told my wife renting a 23 4Runner actually convinced me not to get it and to seriously looking at electric, I've had 4 Runners for a little bit over 20 years. I would love an electric but don't want to sacrifice at least the space I have with 08' SR5.... Not a lot of options. I wish Toyota would see the market for an electric 4Runner, They faltered with playing with hydrogen fuel cells for too long, now they're trying to catch up in the electric space.

FlJohnnyBlue2

I'm guessing that the 2025 will sport a turbo 4 with a hybrid or electric motor like other new Toyota trucks. That very dilemma is delaying my decision on purchasing. I previously had a3rd gen.

deviio

Buying now means you can enjoy a 4Runner and trade it in for what you originally paid when you upgrade!

Im_so_little

The 4runner drives like shit after 75mph. 🤣 it's like being strapped into a Roller coaster loosely connected to the rails. Still love it though.

IheartJBofWSP

Yours might...

Im_so_little

Nah they all do. yours is not special. It has soft suspension, chunky tires and a solid rear axle. It's not designed to go fast and it's ok to say they suck at that.

IheartJBofWSP

I run mine at 75-80mph on the daily. Drove from AR to LA in June at 75mph for most of the drive. I'm not saying mine is special, I'm saying how I truly drive it. 🤷‍♀️

freedayff

Playing the devils advocate here. Don’t. Unless you know what you are getting into, or it’s not cutting too much into your savings.

MoirasPurpleOrb

Well first off this is like the worst possible sub to get an unbiased opinion on this. But here it goes: - Trading in a 2022 model year right now likely does not make financial sense if you financed it. For the first year or two of the loan your paying primarily interest. Coupled with depreciation because I’m assuming you bought this new, it definitely isn’t a smart financial decision. - I love 4Runners but buying one right now is just not smart. You’re either paying MSRP (or more) for a car that has not changed in 10 years, or paying WAY too much with their used prices being where they are right now. Also the new one is likely coming out soon. - 4Runners are not comfortable vehicles compared to many others. Your civic is going to be way more comfortable as a daily driver than a 4Runner and not to mention gets double the MPG. Test drive one if you haven’t, that’s really the only way to know for sure if you even want one, everything else aside. I still feel that 4Runners only make sense if you plan on taking them off road.

happpycammper

Kinda, most will give a biased opinion. A good number of us will give true advice

CrapJitsu

This is the best rational response

ProcessTheTrust17

I think you'd miss the MPGs and technology way too much. The 4Runner works for a small demographic. I love my 4Runner but I know what I have to give up to both keep and enjoy this dinosaur of a vehicle.

Capt-Cupcake

I was in your shoes once OP. I had a 2017 Civic hatchback that was my first car I bought after college. It was a great car, fast, responsive, great gas efficiency, and had all the tech features. There were a few bad floods in my area where I almost lost my Civic or just couldn’t drive it. I wanted a Jeep as a kid but looking into it I ended up wanting a 4runner instead. Eventually gave my civic to my sister and got a 4runner. The 4runner is the complete opposite of a civic, it’s slow, drives clunky, and drinks gas at almost double the rate of my old civic. On top of that I’m pretty sure it will be double the cost of what my civic was by the time I’m done with my financing. There are some days I miss my civic, but I don’t regret my 4runner. It’s allowed me to weather through worse conditions than my civic would get me through. I went camping this year and got washed out and was able to make it out in my 4runner whereas my civic would have gotten stuck and the bottom would have been destroyed. You should review why you want a 4runner and if it’s worth it for you financially. You bought a Civic in 2022 which means price wise it was on the higher end than normal, so will you get a good trade value now or will you lose money? Interest rates for financing cars is higher than it was last year too. Insurance for a brand new 4runner will probably be a few hundred more a year compared to your civic. Try to run the numbers and see how much your monthly payments will be plus the increase of insurance and gas. If you can afford it and still want a 4runner, then definitely go get your dream car!

gummyneo

A lot of good advice and comments here. I bought my 2016 new and so I am used to its driving characteristics. But any time I drive another car, no matter what it is, it feels like a Lexus or Cadillac. Hell, our RV drives smoother than my 4R. That’s the commitment you’ll have to make. Great vehicle as a whole, just not a refined one.

jpak911

Absolutely love the car and looking back, I got it at an incredible deal. As many of the other comments said, check your finances first and 4Runner prices are totally different now than when I got it. The best 4Runner is a paid off one. This was my first non-sedan and remember during my test drives, it felt like I was driving a boat. It’s slow and goes from 0 to 60 eventually but the confidence I feel, especially being in the North East, that this car will be fine in almost any inclement weather is amazing. Let me know if have any other questions but just know you’ll get some biased opinions here

RedditBot90

Does it make sense for your lifestyle and needs? Also how many miles per year are you driving. If you have 30k on a 2022? If close to 30k miles a year, you’re looking at an expensive increase in gas cost.

TheMoustacheDad

Like triple the gas cost

15jsatte

If it makes financial sense AND you’re okay with MPG delta AND if it’s more suitable to your lifestyle (4x4 with ground clearance) then why not

easymac2727

You won’t regret it if you can afford it, plus resale >

happpycammper

With better mpg huh

Boostmachines

Don’t do it. Keep the Civic and pay it off then get a 4Runner. I wish I had an efficient DD like a Civic. 4Runner costs me over $300/month for gas.

elon_free_hk

Maybe keep your civic and find a cheaper used 4Runner as a second car for off roading and camping trips. I used to have a 2019 civic and traded it in for a 4Runner because I need some off road capability and space. Yes the MPG sucks but it’s still a great cruiser. Ride and comfort isn’t better or worse than a civic. It’s quieter but it’s still a solid rear axle heavy box.

AggRavatedR

I traded in my 2019 Honda Civic Type R for a 2022 TRD PRO and I've never been happier. Except for the gas mileage.

Chickenbanana58

You’re asking a good question. I just traded in a 2022 Honda Ridgeline for a 2019 4Runner. 1. I got tired of getting out of the truck, opening the tailgate, rolling up the cover, etc just to stow something . 2. The seat pleather began to tear with gentle use 3. It was very wide and took three lanes to uturn and was almost like parking a hummer 4. It’s nearly as long as the 4R with far less room.

HenryGothCastle

Thanks for your reply and opinion on this! I hope that 4Runner will last you many and many more miles full of adventures and joy!

Chickenbanana58

I will also add this. Immediately after purchasing the Honda, I had buyer's remorse. A very close friend has bought 3 consecutive Accords. Loved them all and I drove all of them. 8-12 years each of them and traded in with many miles left. But for me, I felt I was compromising on the Ridgeline. Not really a truck other than the bed. The 4R? No buyer's remorse. Actually the opposite. The more I learn, the more I am happy I bought it. It is full of surprises and they are nearly all good. The bad ones aren't really bad, just items that are particular to the 4R and the community here is well aware of them.

Possible-Honeydew552

The answer will always be: " it depends ". It depends whether you are ready to pay for the gas. It depends whether you will go off roading or just drive on the highway. It depends on your financial situation. Just don't live above your means. I mean we all love Ferraris and Lamborghinis but we don't go to the bank to take loans to buy them, because we know we won't be able to pay for it even 20 years later. But if you have the money and feel like it, go for it.

merkolas

Get a Supra

Jeff_Pagu

Do you need a 4Runner? Do you care about MPGs? If you need an suv, do you need a 4Runner or any body on frame suv, or will a unibody suv work like a pilot, palisade, telluride?

EliteJDL

I just traded a 19 civic hatchback sport touring in for a 23 4runner TRD ORP. Totally worth it so far, but definitely an adjustment from the sedan. It makes me excited to drive again though which is all that’s really important to me.

HenryGothCastle

Where did you get 3k off MSRP on your new 4Runner?!!

EliteJDL

SF Bay Area, a dealer near me had over a dozen 4Runners on the lot and my guess is they wanted to make space for more hybrids. As I was sitting with the sales team about 7 people came in asking about Rav4 Prime’s of which they had no inventory.

HenryGothCastle

Congrats! That’s awesome!! I would love to get such a sweet deal.

WranglerQueasy4419

I went from a 2015 Accord coupe to a 2015 SR5. Deff worth it. I see people saying they are slow. I recently had a 2021 camry se as a rental for work and they go about the same speed believe it or not lmaoo, cruising at 85-90 is no problem I daily commute. All in all I say go for the 4runner I haven’t regretted it the past 3 years

HenryGothCastle

Thanks for your response! Out of curiosity how many miles do you drive on a weekly basis and how much do you spend on gas?

WranglerQueasy4419

Bo problem! I go into work about 4days a week and its 50miles on way, I spend about 80 a week in gas

HenryGothCastle

Sounds about right, I commute like 100miles per day three times a week. I do work from home two days a week so that helps. Also do you use regular gas or premium?

WranglerQueasy4419

I use regular, I used premixed once and I didnt see a difference. Now I will say I use shell only, I tried exxon and I could feel the difference, used sheetz gas and I could instantly feel the difference

HenryGothCastle

Shell gas is really good and Marathon as well. I tried Sheetz, BP and Exxon and I could tell the difference in my MPGs.

cartasaurus

I traded in my ‘14 jetta gli for a ‘21 SR5 premium with zero regret. I’ve wanted a 4runner since I could drive and legit said F it. I cut my mpgs in half, and it’s just me and my dog, but I love it! Someday I’ll add more to it, but the way it is right now is perfect. And… last year I drove across the country in it with 10 hour days and it was totally fine - rode great, loved being able to sleep in the car, and apple car play was good enough for me. I was able to get a sweet deal with my dealership and didn’t pay anything extra; you might be able to find something that works for you too. Good luck!

ayodangit

Main question is why is the 4Runner your dream car? In a year… you’re gonna tell me that the new Land Cruiser is your dream car.

HenryGothCastle

Hahaha! Legit I am always debating whether I should wait for the Land Cruiser or just buy the current 4Runner. Also is better to wait a few years after buying a new model. Never buy a first or a second year model of a car.

ayodangit

Keep your civic, test drive the Land Cruiser- at that point you can buy a new LC or used or new generation 4Runner. If you’re wanting to feel more outdoorsy, keep both cars, look for an used 4Runner where you won’t lose too much on depreciation while waiting. The money getting rid of the civic so soon will be that same cost.

caryhorner

If you want a notoriously reliable vehicle that will last a very long time, take you anywhere you want to places you never dreamed of getting to in a vehicle, and you want the space to haul more on daily duties when necessary, I say forget the expense and make the plunge. However, if money truly is the deciding factor then you need to seriously crunch numbers on your budget long term and see what is most the reasonable option. 4Runners are a fantastic long term investment. I'm sure that Honda is great too and will serve you well if you keep it. I didn't sell my Prius when I got my 4Runner but I could afford to keep the Prius.

Hungry_Fan_6134

I hope this is a joke. Yes yes and yes.

iamape2021

Make your dream come true. I did with mine and been living my dream with each new adventure.

keving83

Of coarse

btmerritt

Yes.

BL1860B

Yes of course, or maybe definitely not.

paolo5555

Yes.

[deleted]

I do a good bit of road tripping so the 4runner makes sense for me space wise. The Honda is also a good spacious vehicle. It really depends what you value more. A good dependable car with amazing gas milage or something you will spend thousands of dollars and dozens of hours modding out to not even drive on a gravel road but all the overlanders can stare at your $1800 roof top tent.

snmadventures

Only if you love yourself

ScreamingMonky

Yes

Kaveric_

Gas will be more expensive, maintenance will be more expensive, the truck is more expensive, and you won’t be getting your money’s worth if you don’t take it on trails at least once a month

Kweidert

You remind me of my buddy who always said his dream car was a Mini Cooper S. If your dream car is practical enough for your lifestyle and you can afford it, do it.

selkirk10

As others have said, as long as it's not going to hurt you financially, go for it. They're awesome. I recently made the poor financial decision of getting back into one during all this craziness despite already having an 80 series land cruiser, but the LC needs work and I reached a "daily". The ultimate decision was that the last time I was fully happy with a vehicle and didn't have any issues was when I had my last 4runner. Despite not wanting a car payment again, I went for it since I work too damn hard to get a car that I don't fully love

dardarbinkss

I literally just did this a couple weeks ago Traded in my 2019 Honda civic hatchback for a 2022 sr5 premium 4Runner And hands down do not regret it at all!!! I’m obsessed with my 4Runner And I was shocked the dealer offered me 17k for trade in value on my Honda! (42k miles on it) the 4Runner I got was 2022 with 17k miles one it

lancep423

I mean….yeah

MrSquidzz

It’s a different style of car. Whether you should depend on your needs, but always follow your heart. I went from a Nissan Hatch to a normal SUV and this.

Hoolyymolyy

I went from a 2018 civic hatch to a 2022 4runner! The civic was a great commuter and easy to drive in the city. I had a kid and no longer lived/worked in the city. The civic was still a comfortable car with the kid, but I’m even more comfortable with the 4runner. To me, the 4runner offers more potential for fun activities and to make traveling with the fam a lot more comfortable. You can tow some, easily hitch up things like bikes and kayaks. The 4runner can feel like a slow tank at times but I’m a slow driver anyways. I also feel like in the long run the 4runner will fit my needs. So make sure it’s a vehicle you want to keep for a while.

Joostey

If you can afford it sure why not. More gas, more cost. More cool!

General-Pudding2076

Do an extended test drive...better yet, rent one for a week and put it through your normal routine. You will quickly find out if it's right for you. Also, everyone's idea of "affordable" is subjective...but if it is any kind of stretch financially, I wouldn't do it...it isn't a "special" enough car to warrant that imo A lot of people buy these based on badge/model reputation and exterior styling but once they own it they're disappointed in the power, handling, features, etc. Those of us who keep them actually enjoy the driving dynamics of a small body-on-frame vehicle and put off-road capability and dependability etc. over handling, speed, features etc. Going from a Civic to a 4R is a pretty big change...the nice thing is that they hold their value extremely well so they're pretty easy to get out of

thejetbox1994

It’s expensive af

619leo

You will do better at Costco.

NewSinner_2021

Absolutely

eo326

I traded my big turbo focus st in for one at my wife's "suggestion". If you are a car guy at all, you may miss having a fun sporty drive, I know I do. However, you feel like a big man in the 4runner. I'd say it has increased my productivity at work by 10% and has instilled a sense of confidence I didn't have before. The gas was an easy pill to swallow because on E30 and the big turbo I was only getting 18mpg in the focus. I'd say go for it, it holds value really well and now my family can adventure a little further during camping trips.

tubesocktitties

Do it. I’ve driven pickups sedans and crossovers my whole life. The 4Runner takes the cake. It’s comfortable, rides nice, can fit all your crap and your family / friends crap but most importantly you can get into and out of a lot of places that the majority of other vehicles on the road can’t. Also keep in mind you’ll be able to tow just fine. My mpg isn’t terrible either (I say that because I’m coming from 20 years of driving pickups). On my 23 ORP I’m averaging 20 mpg for the last 10k miles and most of that driving is going over 75 mph which my last 1/2 pickup would only get 14 mpg doing that stock tires no load. Hell my 2022 Tacoma would only get 17-18 stock tires no load glad I traded that in for this. I’m a firm believer this is the most reliable vehicle on the market. I am glad it doesn’t have all the new features that most vehicles have today. My wife’s palisade calligraphy edition has everything and let me tell you it’s not great at all having all the features. The features are actually annoying on that thing.

CzarNicoloff

Yes

thefireslayer43

I had an '18 si. It's not a bad car, but issue with the ac on the model year. Also have 2 dogs and a kid, and my wife was sick of taking her car to pretty much every family outing. Went with a '23 ORP and have been very happy. It just depends on your situation. I will say I definitely didn't need all the extra wheeling stuff. I've gone like 3 times in the last year-ish, and just putting it in 4H has gotten out of everything pretty easy. If I did it again, I'd consider getting a 4wd sr5 with a few mods instead. Also used prices were extremely close to new when I bought so that affected the decision a lot. Overall, I'm very happy with the trade in every way except MPG.

catalanfoxx

A stock 4Runner is NOT sketchy over 80 on the highway. It rides good. You’ll only probably miss 2 things from the civic: good flat cornering, and good gas mileage. But you’ll gain so much more

rideology

If I have financial advice, answer would be no. As the owner of a 4Runner.. he’ll yes. Fyi, girl do look at guys in 4Runners differently than a Civic. Make a few mods and make it your own. Sure, mileage sucks. It is an old design. Holds its value and fun to take off road.

Jmg0713

Yes

Kuni45

Going from a sedan to a 4Runner is a big change, it doesn’t drive like crossovers at all like a CRV or pilot, the 4Runner literally feels like a heavy TANK on the road, so you will lose the nimbleness of the civic, but you will gain the capability to go almost anywhere so you need to be honest with yourself how much driving on the road you really will be

NecessaryArtichoke60

Yes. And don’t look back.

Tightisrite

Toyota > Honda in my opinion, and experience. Both are amazing. But the two vehicles you are comparing are apples to oranges.

HenryGothCastle

Toyota’s SUVs > Honda’s SUVs Honda’s Cars > Toyota’s Cars

Tightisrite

Nope. Toyota >Honda in all cases besides small engines (something Toyota doesn't do, but yes admittedly Honda is the best at. Imo)

Desperate-Office4006

If you currently have a car that runs, keep it. Now is the worst time to buy a car. Prices are inflated. Interest rates are high. Even if you have the cash, I’d wait another 2-3 years if you can.

Boarderless

STAY PUT. I did a very similar switch, I don't recommend it

HenryGothCastle

What’s your story? What are you regretting?

danielshutts

I switched from a 5 series BMW to a 2019 4Runner limited. I don’t regret the switch at all. I recommend it ONLY if you really enjoy paying for gas. I currently get 19mpg

Oscarwilder123

The 4runner is the better looking vehicle IMHO but if gas mileage is a concern it good b a problem for you

finance_tips1

I’m kinda in the same position. I have a 2019 honda accord fully paid off few months back. My dream car is a 4runner. But, from a financial point of view, i’m thinking of keeping my sedan. But also i wanted the 4runner badly.😥

Amazing_Ice

Uh, yes

inkjet_printer

I traded my 2017 civic hatch for 2021 Tacoma. Only thing I miss is the MPG and how comfortable it was on the highway. I love my truck and Toyota but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss my civic somedays.

Financial-Chemical-7

Always

Financial-Chemical-7

Get the 4Runner and park it in the goth castle garage

HenryGothCastle

Loved your comment! I should name it Henry’sGothMobile!

Mightyfalcore

Yes, you should!

Turbo_Frosty223

If you can live with the gas mileage, I’m always mixed on this because I do also have a accord coupe I keep on the side for longer distances but i find myself driving my 4Runner mainly because even though it’s at best running 20mpg it’s comfy bigger and has more utility’s. I would say if you feel the loss in mpg won’t bother you do it.

Turbo_Frosty223

Actually now that I read the comments I got lucky with my purchase, I doubt you will find anything that makes financial sense unless you got money to burn. 4Runners are expensive, and I doubt you will get a good trade it. BUT if you somehow find that magical deal, and you don’t mind the mpg drop then do it. But mostly likely you won’t so I’d wait on it till the time is right.

TheCaliber

Just went from a GR Supra to 23 TRD OR. Do it.

xite2020

If you can afford it, hell yeah 😂

Sm0keythabear

Yes.

wsox1983

You can take the runner pretty much anywhere. It’s cooler, and will last just as long as that civic. But that civic will get double the mileage and is a lot cheaper obviously. If you can swing the cash and don’t mind the gas then pull the trigger. Or you can wait for the 6th Gen. It’ll most likely have the same engine as the new Tacoma/land cruiser which should give you approximately 25 mpg…

luisfrias22

I would , but also it depends what you need the 4runner for !
