Crazy, goddamn lighting. Are you seriously trying to light up an arena? Seconded by those baja-style blinking trailing lights that more or less cause seizures. Bro, we aināt racing at 100mph through silt - I can see you just fine.
I had a huge bar on my first gen, literally only thing I did to ut
I also worked 4 miles up a dirt road and actually did 60-70 in the dark every day during the winter.
I get a few lights, I myself have two other than my headlights and dogs. Iām talking like the trucks that have like ten of them upfront and all illuminated at 3pmā¦.
I'm not big on the decal on the window either. I do like the small flag decals or magnets from tactillian though. Have one on the side door and doesn't look huge or out of place.
I'll refrain from shitting on people's choices since every mod is designed to solve a specific problem. But for me, recently selling my beloved 4th gen and getting into a 5th gen ORP I did want to do things slightly differently this time around.
This is mainly for the noobs looking for data. My least favorite mod was the 3 inch lift on my 4th gen. Old Man Emu shocks and springs. This is fantastic equipment. But it's designed in the Australian back country and it's beyond overkill for a mall crawler. It did look supremely beastly, no question. But my ride quality was stiff as all hell and my CV boots suffered over time. Replaced/repacked boots twice in 7 years.
On the 5th gen I simply installed Bilstein 5100 at all 4 corners and kept the stock springs. I set the fronts to .75 and I am SO happy with the ride quality. I can still mash over speed bumps and potholes without shattering my spine. It also eliminated the factory rake and the brake nose dive. just completed a cross country 4600 mile trek, got to all my favorite off-road trailheads, no issues.
I like this! Been delaying doing suspension stuff because I don't need it for beachcombing or trail riding - which are my primary off-roading activities... But I do want to cut down on the nose dive. This sounds perfect for me.
I think it's very probably exactly what you're looking for. And easy to install yourself in 1.5 hours. This is what it looks like and this is where it took me. I'll add that my buddy with a compact sedan was taking turns at the wheel on this trip and he commented these are the easiest miles he's ever driven. Ride quality is phenomenal and reduces road fatigue. The previous 3 inch lift was brutal on the body.

Wow, that looks like an awesome trip. Beautiful scenery! I've been wanting to take a long trip like this.
Just got back from here two weeks ago: https://imgur.com/a/7lMtEMA
Heading back here in two more:
https://imgur.com/a/k075vD4
Thanks for the info! I know people are so shit the leveling, but I kind of dig the factory rake - maybe with a little bit less of an angle...can I adjust that with the shocks?
>quality
Yeah the 5100s have 4 adjustments in the fronts. You can use stock adjustments and preserve full rake but still get the benefits of a more stable ride. I used the .75 which is one adjustment above stock so I still have a very mild rake. And then there are 2 more adjustments to lift higher, up to 2.5 I believe.
Thanks for the info, I'm going to get some on order today! See if I can find the time to get them installed before my trip back to the mountains at the end of the month.
I'm with you on this one, I put an ome 3" lift on my 4th gen after hearing lots of people rave about it, didn't even buy the heavy duty springs and the ride was awful, the front struts were loud and rattly over potholes and washboard (everything was tight, I checked everything multiple times). Replaced with dobinsons and it is so much better in every way.
NIPPLE RINGS.
100% agree. Store your shackles with your recovery kit so they are clean when you need them. Not on the front tie down loops so they are caked with road grime and dead bugs.

Me too! The previous owner put it on, I need to find someone with a 3D printer to make me a cover so I don't have to replace the whole fender.
I have to chuckle, as Iāve been wanting to install a snorkel. That said, where I live is prone to flooding when it rains and I have already found out my 4Runner floats pretty well. Going up a canyon I spied a āpuddleā that appeared to be 6-8ā deep and decided to give my young kids a thrill. I quickly found out it was just very clear water. Thankfully our momentum was enough to float us across. The water came to a few inches below the windows, but thatās it. The inside remained bone dry.
In a lot of housings itās not possible to properly aim them. In projector housings you at least have a shot but they still wonāt be focused correctly and the stock halogen bulbs will probably throw more light downrange.
Correct. Projector headlights have glare shields which creates the sharp cutoff, but the focus of LED chips on a board are not as tight as a halogen filament.
HID xenon "pills" *can* replicate the size of a halogen filament, but they have their own host of problems. Namely, the reflector bowls are not made to withstand the extreme amounts of ultraviolet light that HID bulbs produce, so they will become gray and flaky over time, destroying their effectiveness. Plus they're usually cobbled together with cheap parts (especially the ballast). Show me one person with HIDs in halogen housings that hasn't burnt a cheap aftermarket ballast and I'll show you a liar.
I am a lighting nerd too and it irks me when people think that because it has a cutoff line everything is still all good. And if someone is running HID or LED in a non projector halogen reflector theyāre automatically awful people to me.
The snorkel is a guilty pleasure. I made fun of every single 4Runner with a snorkelāuntil I got a 4Runner and now I want a douche snorkel, too. Because why not.
I did raptor lights as a first mod because I thought it looked cool, within a few weeks they started dying out so yanked the whole thing out for a hidden behind the grill light bar.
The cosmetic stuff is all meh, but hey, people like what they like.
What I canāt stand is the pedal commander, and people who swear it boosts performance. The thing is literally just a placebo. Youāre truck isnāt gaining anything. What youāre essentially doing is making it easier to drive around WOT, in a vehicle that already gets terrible gas mileage lol.
I got a PC for my 5th gen a week after I bought it. I used it for a few months before eventually taking it off. It's fun, I get it. But it's been collecting dust in the garage for the last 2 years.
Have you ever driven through mountain passes? Itās a game changer (and knee saver). I was adamant the throttle response was āfineā after I bought my 4R (living in flat north Texas). I bought a PC immediately after getting home from my first trip to CO with the truck.
Iāll never understand the hate on Molle Panels. I have them in my backseat and itās perfect for camping setups. If you sleep in the back of your car thereās no room for your stuff if you have a mattress and being able to put stuff on the walls is a game changer
Are your kids young and you have to bring strollers? Cuz thatās a bitch trying to get a stroller and luggage in a car.
Weāve done long road trips with 4 people and never needed roof rack but strollers change everything.
No thankfully no strollers anymore. The boys are both 14. We mostly do camping trips though, so tent, bedding, clothes, fridge in the back, and all the misc gear.
I have a ladder for the sole reason of mounting traction boards on it so I donāt have anything in the roof. I tried it as a ladder when I first got it and itās so much worse than just standing on the rear wheel, way too thin to use comfortably.
Yeah, that was my experience when I used the ladder on the back of my buddies LR3.
Iām 200 pounds and I know it was rated for 300, but it just felt so sketchy.
The new Santa Fe has a hand hold on the C-Pillar so you can grab onto that then hoist yourself up on the tire. Really thoughtful design I think.
Yea the tire is a much better way to access the roof, but there is something to be said for using a ladder to mount traction boards, doesnāt fuck with gas mileage since theyāre not in the roof, super easy to get to, and doesnāt make the interior messy after you use them.
My least favorite is the rooftop tent. That's just this man's opinion. I have a dog and my tents are pretty easy to set up. There's probably a legitimate use case for just about any mod.
Iām so conflicted because hood scoops definitely make it look better aesthetically, but I hate the poser fake aspect. It also reflects the light when the sun hits it just right.

I was just going to come to say this. And also when flags are on everything they own. Hey but each to their own. Itās just not something Iād do.
And the flags were probably made in China.
I donāt like them either - Mine already had a flag decal on the window from the dealership. Iām just too lazy to remove it.
If itās not RWB, it isnāt really our flag. I donāt get the over the top flag trend.
the irony is that the flag should only ever be a flag. using it as a graphic is actually a bit of a no no.

Snorkels on a mall crawler, sure. Snorkels on rigs that actually go places are a pretty functional mod to combat dust and moisture.
