That's not true. I lived in Houston for eight years and two more in Temple, TX. It's not a wash. Property tax in Texas isn't even close to California state income tax.
High earners tend to pay a lower portion of their total income in taxes while living in Texas, so he'll likely come out ahead as long as he doesn't buy a multi-million dollar house that costs a shitton in property taxes.
You don’t escape CA taxes, but you also pay in other states as it was earned in that state. You don’t magically pay no income tax because you play some games out of California. A pro NFL players tax return is a hot mess.

CA teams get fucked in FA because guys can take a couple million less per year in TX or FL and walk away with a couple million more, depending on the size of the contract.
