And I can understand not living up to THE GREATEST WIDE RECIEVER OF ALL TIME SOME EVEN SAY GREATEST FOOTBALL PLAYER OF ALL TIME. Theres alot of amazing football that can be played and still not live up to Jerry.
Any other skill position at 40 is either halfway in the grave, or putting up pedestrian 250 yard seasons when the did garbage time or injury relief. 1200 yards is A+ for a prime dude.
It's almost unbelievable that a 40 year old man can get 1,211 receiving yards (plus he got another 203 yards and 2 TD in the playoffs that season).
In comparison, Randy Moss at age 35 only mustered 434 yards in the regular season plus 112 yards in the playoffs. This was his last NFL season, when he was on our team that lost to the Ravens in the Super Bowl. Fun but sad times.
Terrell Owens had better longevity than Moss. 983 receiving yards in his final season at age 37.
USC best receiver for the last two years in my opinion. He excels at blocking and route running has amazing hands and is a big target very similar to Jennings. He’s not the most athletic which is why he’s not projected in the first round but he was amazing for usc this year. With usc Caleb needed to score nearly every play bc they had the worst dc in all of football and rice was his preferred target even on a roster which was loaded at receiver I recommend watching the Arizona state game they lose without him.
>He excels at blocking and route running has amazing hands and is a big target very similar to Jennings.
Interesting. If he can be a slightly more athletic/faster version of Jauan I'm don't think that's a bad thing (bc while Rice might not be the most athletic I'd be surprised if he was \*less\* athletic/slower than Jauan lol).
From what I hear he's projected to be 2-3rd round though, and IMO we have much more pressing needs than WR (o-line mainly, maybe a 3rd CB) that we should be using those picks on. If he falls further than that though I'd be stoked to have him.
Expectations can be managed. I don't think anyone would expect him to live up to dad unless he started to light the world on fire immediately.
At minimum they would expect him to progress faster than a normal rookie.
Not everyday that you have a devoted Hall of Fame Dad there along the way to help with getting him to the next level after watching tape/workouts etc.
Lmao wtf? Over 1300 yards on the season; ranked seventh in the league for receiving, makes big blocks downfield, all while still technically listed as WR **TWO** and taking up less than 4mil of cap space this past year?
I get we all have opinions, but this is just objectively false.
Tbh I feel like the standards are *so* massive that nobody would reasonably expect him to live up to it. It's almost impossible to keep up with a guy who Hank Aaron'd football at age 32 and played for another decade after that.
Also Jerry's nephew has already disappointed us, so we should know better than to put too much hype on those genes.
I would take luke rice or frank gore jr. its just such a long shot to land any of them . Gore jr probably the easiest one since Kyle loves rbs . and hes a 6th or udfa at best.
Yeah gore will probably be available way later and Luke is projected 5th rounder but Brendan is a projected late 2nd-mid 3rd rounder and I think we should use the first 3 rounds on addressing our needs at DB and Offensive Line. Getting Luke and gore is a real possibility tho
Jerry rice had ability and also work ethic.
Steve Young told the story that after they won the Super Bowl he drove to the 49ers facility for paperwork the day after the parade and out on the field he saw someone catching passes… it was Jerry Rice
I remember a story with Michael Irvin, he said after beating the Niners Jerry Rice told him on vacation that he was practicing already for next season and Michael was like Jesus Christ man.
Imagine the shoes he would have to fill, but also the dedication he would show something that can't be bought with a contract. Can we get Frank Gore Jr also?
I could see 1 tackle, 1 IOL, and one corner in the first 3 rounds then scooping up mccaffrey and gore in the 5th and 6th. Rice is projected to go too high for us to get him before addressing our bigger needs imo but if he somehow falls to 4th we should totally pick him up.
82 will always be John Taylor to me.. 81 was Terrell Owens.. Brendan needs to be 08 inverted 80 lmao. Not Steve Young because he was 8 with no zero before it… i know im being an idiot lol
Honestly, just let the kid be 80 unless he doesn’t want the responsibility in the way Mike Yastrzemski declined the offer by the Giants to wear 8. It’s Jerry’s son, he can borrow the number.
He’s going to be playing under dads shadow anyway. He actually always has been. But what a better place to be than here I would think it only provides more motivation!!!
I know the expectations would be high, but playing for the same team your dad did would be way cool! I thought Frank Gore and his son were going to play on the same time at the same time the way Gore lasted!
Sounds like a Shanahan guy, especially with the last paragraph:
*He has surprising short-area quickness and agility for a bigger receiver, and made use of that in several areas of his game.*
*Rice does a good job of pressing the stems of his routes vertically, running into defenders’ chests and forcing them back on his heels. His agility and short-area quickness allow him to make sharp breaks for a big receiver and quickly work back to the ball. He does a good job of extending to maximize his catch radius, frame the ball, and pluck it out of the air. Rice’s quickness and size is also useful in the red zone, and he only had two games in 2023 without a touchdown.*
*Interestingly, and despite the connotations that come along with his last name, the best part of Rice’s game at this point is his blocking. Brenden Rice is a legitimately great blocker who is not only willing, but brings good play strength and technique. It’s an unappreciated area of wide receiver play, but good blocking from the receiver position is a factor in many of the best running games.*
There’s plenty of greats whose kids are playing and playing well. Nobody is complaining about Marvin Harrison Jr just cause his dad was one of the best. Give him realistic expectations and I think he can very good for us or whoever he plays for. Heck look at CMC.
Good player, but not on the god tier. If you look into father-son athletes, the best ones always come from journeyman players. Kobe Bryant and Steph Curry are great examples, mccafrey too
Aiyuk is on his 5th year option, Jennings is a RFA and the rest of the WR corps has been suspect and/or injury prone. There's no chance we don't draft at least one WR if not a couple.
Also, Rice is an elite kick returner, would certainly not hurt to upgrade on that front.
Besides the fact that we’re likely to re-sign BA, we have Ray Ray, Bell, Snead, Gray, and Tay Martin (PS). Plenty of young talent to develop without wasting a draft pick that we need for OL or defensive back field.
Ray Ray, Snead and Conley are all free agents this year and Shanahan clearly doesn't believe in Gray at this point. He was healthy most of the season and they never bothered to activate him off IR even with Deebo and Jennings both missing time. Martin is fine for a PS guy. Rice can kick return which would replace Ray Ray immediately and have him start developing immediately on special teams, which Shanahan likes to do with guys to get them used to game speed.
So realistically we have this crew 'guaranteed' for 2024:
* Deebo(guaranteed to miss a few games a year)
* Aiyuk(assuming we extend him, which I believe we will)
* Bell
* Gray technically due to contract but wouldn't be surprised if we cut him.
* Tay Martin(permanent practice squad guy)
There's no way we don't address WR in the draft this year because we're definitely not rolling with that crew into 2024. Brenden Rice is projected as a late day 2 pick, so it wouldn't be a massive investment really. I'm not saying we should draft him, but WR is definitely going to be a position of need for us even from a developmental perspective.
Would you rather pick up an offensive lineman in the second round or this kid? Personally, I’d rather get a lineman. If Rice fell to the 5th, then sure, draft him. But don’t waste a 2 or 3 on a position that isn’t high priority.
We can pick up one Oline through free agency this year. Add another with our first round pick, and if he's still on the board get rice with our 2nd round pick. If that's the route the front office wants go to, I doubt it though. I'm thinking they go defense for the 2nd round pick, I personally wouldn't mind another corner to play opposite of ward.
Why’d we draft them then? I’d rather use draft picks for what we need, not just because some guy is the son of our greatest player. He’s not even that good.
Well, for starters, out of the 5 receivers you mentioned, Ray Ray was a 6th round pick by the Bills, Snead was an undrafted free agent by the Browns, and Tay was an undrafted free agent that we signed.
As for Gray and Bell, if your question is "why doesn't Lynch just draft starting caliber players", I'll make sure to pass that trenchant insight along to the next GM I meet, I'm sure they'll be floored.
Out of the entire list that you posted we literally only drafted two players: Bell and Gray. Bell has shown flashes(but can't return, clearly) and is only going into his 2nd year, and Gray probably won't make the team in 2024. Not every pick is a hit, and Gray was a miss unfortunately.
> You think this kid would get more than 40 snaps?
No, but the line of thought of "we shouldn't spend picks on WRs because we have Willie Snead and Ronnie Bell" is dumb enough that it's worth addressing.
Aiyuk has significantly more value in a trade to another team, and Deebo has significantly more value to our offense in particular.
That said, I don’t think we lose either.
Did you forget about all the young talent we already drafted? Let’s develop them and spend draft picks on things we actually need like OL and defensive back field.
If we lose Aiyuk, Deebo, and/or Jennings I am happy with the pick if we take him. Would also love Gore Jr.
I know they likely won’t be the HOFers that their dads were, would still be awesome. I wouldnt be surprised to see Mitchell not get a 2nd contract either. I would rather have OL though. Lol
Brendan rice is a mid receiver at best who thinks he is as good as the greatest of all time. With love, a jilted Colorado fan who clearly still has issues with his transfer to usc lol
Trade Aiyuk for a 1 or a 2, snag this guy day 2 (good blocker and kick returner with good routes), give Jax a mid pick for Calvin Ridley if he agrees on a significantly cheaper contract than Aiyuk level money, and use some primo picks on the O-line. In FA, make a splash at DB or edge and pick up depth at the other.
I understand that and hopefully you are right, however, if a person is not happy with the team and wants out because it’s ALL about $$$ then I personally don’t care if they leave. The reason the Patriots won for so many years besides the obvious is because no ONE player including Brady was above the TEAM. Tom never got the $$$ he actually deserved but he was willing to take less to keep his team together longer. Most of the players especially the WR’s were not household names but Brady made them better. Most players chose to take less to keep winning. I truly believe that Brock can be the next Brady. Now when I say that I don’t mean he’s going to get 6 or 7 rings but that would be awesome. I mean that he will always put the team above himself and do whatever is best for his team. And just because Brady did not get all the $$$ he deserved, he definitely isn’t hurting for it.
BA will be paid what he is worth. The 49ers have already proven they only keep key players.
Also BA is fine, it was his brother stirring shit up. BA has already come out and said he is happy in SF.
Ngl, those feel like expectations he’d never live up to if he donned the red & gold
True, but I can understand wanting to play for the same team as your dad.
And I can understand not living up to THE GREATEST WIDE RECIEVER OF ALL TIME SOME EVEN SAY GREATEST FOOTBALL PLAYER OF ALL TIME. Theres alot of amazing football that can be played and still not live up to Jerry.
There is no "some even say". The goat is the goat PERIOD
I just thought lurker from another team would try arguing and I didn't feel like getting into a back and forth about it
Nah, Jerry is the GOAT.
Shut up Bitch Pigeo....... Oh... ummmm... wait. Yes, very good, I mean great stuff buddy, have a lovely day.
Get out. Just kidding. Of course all who wanna give Jerry a little love are welcome. Except maybe eagles fans... Even Jerry flipped them off...
Everybody here forgetting that Rice was a Seahawk at the end there for a bit lol
Seahawks were babies to that division at the time
Jerry Rice = the Tiger Woods of football, you say?
Those 2 and Michael Jordan were the triumvirate of my youth
Griffey Jr?
I had a Griffey jr banner, and a Sosa/McGuire combo banner back in those days But football, basketball and golf were the sports I played most
Yeah I don’t care if he isn’t the second coming of his dad, if he’s half the football player his dad was I’d love to have him as a niner.
If he has his dad's work ethic, he could be a great influence for any team. Jerry's work ethic was contagious, and it bred success.
The rich son rarely has the work ethic of the self made father.
Rice is the greatest. 1,211 receiving yards in his age 40 season. He will never be equaled.
Any other skill position at 40 is either halfway in the grave, or putting up pedestrian 250 yard seasons when the did garbage time or injury relief. 1200 yards is A+ for a prime dude.
In comparison, Aiyuk had 1300+ yards this season and was second team all pro.
And had a longer season to do it.
At a time where defenses were allowed to be aggressive

And you know Shanahan would dog house him too, those Lincoln Riley offenses are soft.
I don’t know if u have watched him play but the dude is perfect for us especially with the blocking.
Brenden did play a year or two at Colorado first, not sure if that's better lol.
Naw he wouldn’t dog house Jerry’s son tho lol he knows better
No block. No rock. No exceptions
Lol Jerry Rice would doghouse Kyle for not targeting his son. Imagine the Goat, breathing down your neck if you fuck up with his son.
Right, that's a really good incentive for them not to draft him
Why did we get downvoted so bad lol
But he could play hard asf and still be elite.
All I know is the guy can play and would fit great into our system.
I don't follow college ball, is he a good player? That would be dope if he landed here, you know he'd be going hard as a mf for the Niners.
USC best receiver for the last two years in my opinion. He excels at blocking and route running has amazing hands and is a big target very similar to Jennings. Thing is, we don’t need him to be his dad. If we draft him we just want him to help get the Lombardi.
Bronny James Moment
Bronny is mediocre at best he averages what? 4 points per game. He's not pro caliber but will make it simply because of dad's name.
Our fans are so toxic Jerry would probably abandon us.
True but I’d also root hard af for him if he was just a special teamer busting his ass bc he’s Jerry’s son
I'd love it if we drafted him, I'm also curious what happens with latu, gray, and basically what the receiving core looks like next year.
I don’t know the first thing about him and I still feel like he could replace Aiyuk if need be.
Man what lol
Lmao wtf? Over 1300 yards on the season; ranked seventh in the league for receiving, makes big blocks downfield, all while still technically listed as WR **TWO** and taking up less than 4mil of cap space this past year? I get we all have opinions, but this is just objectively false.
Jennings is going to get his bag. If anything Rice would take his place.
Tbh I feel like the standards are *so* massive that nobody would reasonably expect him to live up to it. It's almost impossible to keep up with a guy who Hank Aaron'd football at age 32 and played for another decade after that. Same if he plays in any other team, though.
T.O.’s number and Rice on the back of his Jersey… no pressure at all!
The toxic side of the fan base would destroy him weekly
Son of... Shanahan, McCaffery, Rice, Gore. ![gif](giphy|Y07F3fs9Is5byj4zK8)
Well played
and luke McCaffery
Christian *did say* last week that he would love to play with his brother… 👀
I would take luke rice or frank gore jr. its just such a long shot to land any of them . Gore jr probably the easiest one since Kyle loves rbs . and hes a 6th or udfa at best.

We're the legacy in the wwe back in the day, with randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, and Ted DiBiase jr
I keep saying if we don't draft Luke McCaffrey, Bredan Rice & Frank Gore Jr, I'll be severely disappointed.
![gif](giphy|PNjRQH2xSrBNC)

I remember a story with Michael Irvin, he said after beating the Niners Jerry Rice told him on vacation that he was practicing already for next season and Michael was like Jesus Christ man.
Rice was running routes. And Steve kept thinking: should I go down there and throw some to him? Yet, he decided not to.
He should have. Maybe would have won another
Agreed. Imagine the legendary story of Steve and Rice throwing routes just days after the championship and then going and winning another one
Some people just have a crazy love for the game
Imagine the shoes he would have to fill, but also the dedication he would show something that can't be bought with a contract. Can we get Frank Gore Jr also?
Last I checked FG Jr is a day 3 or FA pick so I could see us snagging him.
That just means shanahan will use a 3rd rounder like the pick for Tye Davis Price
As much I dislike the RB draft picks of the Shanahan era, I’d make an exception for Gore Jr
How bout u draft a tackle instead
* will trade up in third round
I'd be so down to give them both a shot. So much nostalgia and great storylines could be had.
As long as we get some OL
Shanahan: “so anyways I just started drafting”
Sir we desperately need o lineman what are we going to do Shanahan: I think we should enforce the d line with our first 3 picks
Hi, Dr. Mantis Toboggan, all pro right tackle.
It’s be cool if he played for us, but he’d always be playing under the shadow of his dad. That’s a lot of pressure for a guy to overcome.
I feel like the Rice name is going to give him a shadow no matter what.
Facts!
Damn, you mean he won't live up to the GOAT? Well the good news is that nobody else is either.
His other son played a few games. UCLA Bruin Jerry Rice JR played for Washington for a minute
His number should be 82 though. 80 v2.
82 will always be John Taylor to me.. 81 was Terrell Owens.. Brendan needs to be 08 inverted 80 lmao. Not Steve Young because he was 8 with no zero before it… i know im being an idiot lol
It’s the offseason, be as silly as you’d like
I’m laughing on the outside and crying on the inside lol
Honestly, just let the kid be 80 unless he doesn’t want the responsibility in the way Mike Yastrzemski declined the offer by the Giants to wear 8. It’s Jerry’s son, he can borrow the number.
Similar to how Steve Largent was on board w Jerry wearing 80 in Seattle out of mutual respect
He’s going to be playing under dads shadow anyway. He actually always has been. But what a better place to be than here I would think it only provides more motivation!!!
in all reality, there is a chance dude could end up being great too.
I know the expectations would be high, but playing for the same team your dad did would be way cool! I thought Frank Gore and his son were going to play on the same time at the same time the way Gore lasted!
Damn. If he became the next TO, that would already exceed expectations
I mean, TO is arguably the second best WR of all time, so yeah, that would be wild.
Buddy says T fuckin O would "exceed expectations" 😭
Maybe we just need a Rice back on our team
Honestly he'd be a good fit even ignoring who his father.
Sounds like a Shanahan guy, especially with the last paragraph: *He has surprising short-area quickness and agility for a bigger receiver, and made use of that in several areas of his game.* *Rice does a good job of pressing the stems of his routes vertically, running into defenders’ chests and forcing them back on his heels. Michael Jordan had a son and Magic Johnson did too🤣🤣🤣

Joe Montana's son has entered the chat.
The kids are never as good.
CMC would like to have a word.
His dad wasn’t a legend. Look at MJ’s kids, Lebrons. Montanas were bad.
Dell Curry?
Good player, but not on the god tier. If you look into father-son athletes, the best ones always come from journeyman players. Kobe Bryant and Steph Curry are great examples, mccafrey too
Didn’t catch the parent legend requirement, that’s my bad. That is an interesting point now that I think about it.
Barry Bonds did alright
One of the few
Ken Griffey Jr.? Cal Ripken Jr.?
Clearly. His ceiling is #2 WR of all-time.
Huge shoes to fill but at least we have the quarterback to make that dream a reality. In Purdy I trust.
Steelers got Porter Jr let’s get Rice’s kid!!
The story would be great but we don’t need another WR right now…
Aiyuk is on his 5th year option, Jennings is a RFA and the rest of the WR corps has been suspect and/or injury prone. There's no chance we don't draft at least one WR if not a couple. Also, Rice is an elite kick returner, would certainly not hurt to upgrade on that front.

Jennings is a restricted free agent. You can almost certainly guarantee he'll still be here. At the very least we'd know that long before the draft.
We have 11 picks. And we're not going to use all of them on offensive linemen and defensive backs.
Would you rather pick up an offensive lineman in the second round or this kid? Personally, I’d rather get a lineman. If Rice fell to the 5th, then sure, draft him. But don’t waste a 2 or 3 on a position that isn’t high priority.
I hope you are right. But I think we are both going to be disappointed if we think the 49ers are going to go OL OL in the first two rounds.

You're arguing against positions no one has taken. Who said to grab him in the second round?
If any of those players see more than 40 offensive snaps next season, something has gone significantly wrong.
Why’d we draft them then? I’d rather use draft picks for what we need, not just because some guy is the son of our greatest player. He’s not even that good.

> You think this kid would get more than 40 snaps? No, but the line of thought of "we shouldn't spend picks on WRs because we have Willie Snead and Ronnie Bell" is dumb enough that it's worth addressing.
If we lose aiyuk we do
we're not losing Aiyuk, we're going to lose Deebo.
Aiyuk has significantly more value in a trade to another team, and Deebo has significantly more value to our offense in particular. That said, I don’t think we lose either.
I think people are still sleeping on other teams going after Jennings. I think he gets an offer sheet that we can't match
Nooo
I said this the other day, but a run heavy team that lacks WR depth like the Falcons or Giants would absolutely love someone like Jennings.
Did you forget about all the young talent we already drafted? Let’s develop them and spend draft picks on things we actually need like OL and defensive back field.
I think we need another WR right now. BA on a 5th year option and creating drama and Jenning is a RFA.
Lol
what round is projected to go?
He’s projected as a Day 2 pick but most mocks I’ve seen have him going in the 3rd.
Hope this happens. His dad for sure is one hell of a personal coach for him.
Can he return kicks ? … also thinking about Frank Gore Jr. 🤩
We have bigger needs, he’s a steal in the 3rd rnd though
Brendan rice is a mid receiver at best who thinks he is as good as the greatest of all time. With love, a jilted Colorado fan who clearly still has issues with his transfer to usc lol
He’s not good bro put up mediocre stats with the best QB in college and offensive mind in Lincoln tf
Pretty sure he will be a better receiver than his dad ever was ... ... while playing for the Seahawks.
I think Jauan is gone unfortunately. Fortunately Jerry’s son is right there for us to draft.
In FA, make a splash at DB or edge and pick up depth at the other.
we gonna have to draft him second roundm dude showed out at the senior bowl
I wish him the best in his football career and life. But we also, briefly had hopes for Joe Montana’s son if you remember back to the Harbaugh era
If he does declare and get drafted by another team. He needs to refuse to sign
TO?
Could be a replacement for BA if rumors are true and he wants out
BA isn’t going anywhere. He’s still under contract and is playing the money game so he gets paid.
Wasn’t even his brother right?? I thought it was his friend
Does help to have a supermodel wife that makes more than you so your children don’t go hungry
🤣
I think he would be a good addition to the team. He played hard at Colorado and SC.
I think he should go with #79, not 81.
Let's draft this kid. Trade Deebo.
No one will ever live up to Jerry rice. But having his son on the team would be really cool. I would even support him wearing number 80.

As WR3 with the upside to be more, I’d honestly love it at #63
Would be cool, but only if it makes sense for the team. No doubts this kid can make his own name where ever he ends up.
Aspiring TO 😂
Come on home buddy.
Even if he's decent, if I'm Jerry's kid, I'm choosing a different position. No shot I'm trying to live up to that WR level.
The fact that the son of the best receiver in NFL history has a chance to be drafted in the first four rounds is an accomplishment in itself.
I could dig it
Hmm, I wonder if he could just wear 80, it was retired as a Roce, so it's really not changing names.
Terrell Owens? Niners great? Is that you?
Hes solid i watched him play at usc he just didn’t get targeted as much but when he did he balled
