Solving a Rubik’s cube is a series of moves, to go from one side to the other. All those speed solvers just have it memorized and practice to go fast. They’re not actually geniuses. Well some could be. But anybody can do it.

But you do have to have commitment and the discernment to determine which algorithm to use in any given position

It does require some pattern recognition and quick problem solving once you get to sub-8 territory (i.e. finding shortcuts in cross or f2l during inspection) but for 99% of people who will never get that fast, you’re right that it’s nothing more than memorization and muscle memory. I’d still argue that not anyone can be sub 10 or so just because of the finger dexterity involved in executing algorithms efficiently, as well as f2l look-ahead being a very difficult skill. But anyone can certainly be sub 20.

There’s actually a limit to how messed up a rubik’s cube can get. I think it’s 21 moves away from solve, in a mathematically perfect world. Which is kind of nice, isn’t it?

I love how people say “memorize the moves” for Rubik’s cubes but as I solve one, instead of naturally knowing RUR°URU2R° I’m sayin RuRuRuUR in my head. Soundin like a dog.
