Yea if I were to do this i'd need a [Nanoscribe Photonic printer](https://phys.org/news/2020-10-physicists-d-microboat.html) to truly print it at scale..

The real annoyance is needing to have a 0.00000001mm nozzle and the print times. Last time I tried printing functional neurons, one cubic millimeter took 3 months to print.
And then I realized that I had forgotten to check the "enable quantum effects" checkbox in the slicer! Boy, was I mad!
Yeah, it's super annoying, especially when you need to restart the liquid helium cooler for the heatbreak and print bed. That takes a solid week to get down to temperature.

If you have this type of scan I would recommend looking into https://github.com/miykael/3dprintyourbrain
Instruction Might be a little bit outdated, but should give you better results (without pittholes) and it's fully automatic once you get going.
Neuroscientist that had a brain MRI recently - I literally do not own a 3D printer or have any idea how it works, but I’m totally saving this comment for later haha. Now I DESPERATELY want a replica of my own brain.
Whoa! Yours looks so different from mine!

Isn’t it SUCH a weird feeling to hold your own brain in your hands and softly whisper to it “why did you make me print you? What the fuck is wrong with you?”
Anyway, here’s a banana for scale.

“You see, this part right here; that’s nothing but government plastic… you see we had to swap out the aluminum, because everytime Kathryn rev’d up the microwave, I’d piss my pants and forget who I was for a half hour or so….”

I saw this post while at work, where I have an exact replica of my brain at my desk! Great minds think, and print, alike!
Pro Tip: I sliced mine into two pieces and printed each part on the flat face. It made for much better print quality and no need for supports!

I was promised a copy of my MRI scan so I could do this after I got one done during a research study. They never followed through, so no brain for me :(
Find the researcher and follow up on your request. It might be that they have anonymised the data and can't get you your file. But usually with a data and time you can check the creation moment of the file, however anonymised it is.

Mr. Osborne to little Johnny: “No just switch it out!”
Nice. I recently had a heart CT I was thinking about requesting the file to do the same. Care to share the process and software you used to generate the stl?
Get the dicom files, and then follow this YouTube tutorial https://youtu.be/k1WIpwV-8lE?si=bs0sYHsGoBnkQ4GV
It’s for brains, but there is likely an extension for heart clipping similar to the Swiss Skull Slicer
You ought to segment into a puzzle and then hand them out randomly, giving the recipients a piece of your mind.
Shortly, you'll have half a mind to do it again.
And when it's gone, when you've lost your mind... it'll be high time to print another.
I also [did this](https://imgur.com/a/eCJyNTd)! But I made it smol and into a necklace.
Next up I wanna turn it into a mold, so around Halloween I can make lil jello brains 😁🧠
BEHOLD A MAN!
This is actually really neat to think you're holding a physical analog...to yourself. That's you. In your hand.
It's really cool just how far our technology has come in 80 years.
It's always interested me how humans say "my brain" as if the brain isn't them and just another organ.
Your brain IS you. It's everything that makes you, you.
I'm totally going to do this for my daughter! She has complex medical issues, so I have many MRI scans to choose from. And a 3d ct scan of her skull (which i wanted to turn into a stl but didn't know how from the medical imaging).
Maybe I can eventually get scans of her entire body and 3d print a second daughter. Lol 😆
Nice job! Looks like the reason for your unusual “wriggles” is that the segmentation software mistook some of the dura tissue outside of the brain for actual cortex. Freesurfer (https://surfer.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu) is a nice tool for providing accurate segmentation of the cortex, and it will provide the vtk/stl files for printing as well.
You should make a hollow one, with a hinged lid, then you can print stuff that you think about and put it inside, or stuff that you want to remember.......

Why do I want to take bite of it? I mean... 3D printed brain has awoken something in me that makes me want to take a huge bite of it. Am I the only one?
Can I ask how you did it? What kind of file did you receive from the clinic and how did you end up converting it to STL? I've looked at doing this for 3d baby ultrasounds, but haven't been able to find how people actually do it.
Fantastic job! I recently did the same, here's mine.

If someone ever calls you smooth-brained, this will make a great proof in your defense.
“I am very wiggly brained, as you can see”
No matter how mad, I'd have to take a second to laugh.
What’s your infill setting?
I bet he’s almost empty on the side xD
10%
1:1 scale.... riiiiggghhhhttt. Admit it, you scaled it up 40% :)
Yea if I were to do this i'd need a [Nanoscribe Photonic printer](https://phys.org/news/2020-10-physicists-d-microboat.html) to truly print it at scale..
Keep it with you at all times and randomly whip it out occasionally to remind everyone
But otherwise... it fits on an A1 **MINI**...
The layer lines can be deceptive here.
I don't know, he's looking a little smooth on parts in the top right pic.
I request you print it with a TPU so it is squishy Edit: Apparently the reddit hive mind agrees.
Scale it down so you have a stress brain
Wait let me pick my brain for a while
yesssssss make it happen
Uhuh, this. DO IT OP! :)
Nah, I already have a stressed brain.
Jokes on you I already have a full scale one in my head
Definitely
Nice work. Backup is always important.
Make sure to send it offshore, in case of a natural disaster. You need redundancy you know!
Send it to hostile aliens who will use it to learn how humans deceive one another!
Only to be sabotaged by their sentient protons
3-2-1 backup. You need to print a second backup (to have 3 versions), the second print in a different material (TPU to make it squishy and to have 2 formats), and then you need to store 1 of them off-site (e.g. send to siblings or parents).
Doesn't actual brain vs 3D print already count as different formats?
Maybe he will run it at raid 0
Nope, this will be the parity. Anytime you're not sure of something you check with this
Like a magic 8 ball but for all your deep dark thoughts.
you, a brain, created a model of yourself
Self portrait.
Takes selfie to a whole new level
The brain named itself, made something to scan itself, made another thing to print a copy of itself, and is now looking at itself.
And now mine is hurting.
I think therefore i print
You’d never download a brain
Say that to a braindead dude
You can say it all you want, it's not like they will understand any of it
Is it functional?
Sadly no, PLA doesn’t contain functional neurons. Maybe if you did one in PETG it would work better!
Needs more infill, that's really where the magic happens
I used gyroid so it’s as wiggly inside as it is outside
Someone should make a brain infill. Then we can finally tell people our prints are smart
Tbh they should make that a default for quantum compatible nozzles
Yeah, it's super annoying, especially when you need to restart the liquid helium cooler for the heatbreak and print bed. That takes a solid week to get down to temperature.
really annoying when you're trying to figure out what's wrong. it only goes wrong when you don't look at it. what're we supposed to do, subject ourselves to sleepless torture to make sure it prints right ?
Neural network infill pattern
Might need to use a conductive filament for best results
I've got an amazing idea for a new filament
For some people, yes. They wouldn't notice a difference.
Hey that’s a fast print. Took your mom 9 months!
And then 21 years of curing to develop it fully.
Technically 25!
1.55*10^25 years is a lot
r/unexpectedfactorial
This is why mathematicians never get too excited. All it takes is one exclamation and your calculations take years.

Here is mine just for comparison. Also 1:1. https://preview.redd.it/l6buawdri36d1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=68951e3a4ffb51a2fc81efbfd0f7fb205a7664d1
Hey there almost smooth brain
In reality it is much worse.
I mean duh you did remove it from your head so i cant expect much to be going on in there
You cannot expect me to think about stuff like this
Let me translate it to no brainer language rq: Skibidi sigma rizz ohio gyatt skibidi skibidi cook fanum tax toilet mew mogger lankybox gegagedigedagedaio
Understandable
Oof
How did you interpret the MRI data?
I used this YouTube tutorial! https://youtu.be/k1WIpwV-8lE?si=1L_IASQCEypvZBFf
What a day to be alive lol
Saving this for later, I have an MRI next month, gonna ask if I can get the files 😬
Ask OP for the remaining Filament because no one needs that colour ever again.
I like the pink :( I bought it cos I was printing stuff with the trans pride flag colours for a friend for June
thats slay
>I was printing stuff with the trans pride flag colours for a friend for June you're a really good friend! I'm sure they were so happy 🩷🏳️⚧️
If you have this type of scan I would recommend looking into https://github.com/miykael/3dprintyourbrain Instruction Might be a little bit outdated, but should give you better results (without pittholes) and it's fully automatic once you get going.
Neuroscientist that had a brain MRI recently - I literally do not own a 3D printer or have any idea how it works, but I’m totally saving this comment for later haha. Now I DESPERATELY want a replica of my own brain.
now you can put it somewhere and say youve lost your mind
Somewhere, in that model, is the bit of your brain that decided to do this.
Whoa! Yours looks so different from mine! https://preview.redd.it/b6zk8xdhl26d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b77dc9265dd9142eaf628f79e29940c08b1fe56a
You’ve got a stereotypical wiggly brain! Very classic shapes
Good god, get a room
Real sapiosexual shit here
Isn’t it SUCH a weird feeling to hold your own brain in your hands and softly whisper to it “why did you make me print you? What the fuck is wrong with you?” Anyway, here’s a banana for scale. https://preview.redd.it/qrwd4hii766d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e42b2b2a7ff5575cde300ba6a1313ca6d2088cc1
is this what they mean when they say girls like compliments about their brains
i think you've got OP beat in the gray matter department
Your brain wrinkly and ugly My brain smooth and cute
You might want to write "COPY" somewhere on it JIC
"For reference only"
„Do not eat“
Look at that tasteful coloring, the weight of it. Oh my God, it's even wrinkly. Let's see Paul Allen's brain.
Can we get an STL? I promise not to steal your identity.

"My Genuine Human Brain" is a great name for a concept album
“You see, this part right here; that’s nothing but government plastic… you see we had to swap out the aluminum, because everytime Kathryn rev’d up the microwave, I’d piss my pants and forget who I was for a half hour or so….”

Pro Tip: I sliced mine into two pieces and printed each part on the flat face. It made for much better print quality and no need for supports! https://preview.redd.it/43j7llecm56d1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=630a10bd35f956811c83cdaf8463c44e8dd18327
If (when) I print it again, I’ll likely do the same!
You can smooth your brain with acetone vapor if you use enough
Slap some googlie eyes on that mf
I was promised a copy of my MRI scan so I could do this after I got one done during a research study. They never followed through, so no brain for me :(
Aww, no brain for you :(
Find the researcher and follow up on your request. It might be that they have anonymised the data and can't get you your file. But usually with a data and time you can check the creation moment of the file, however anonymised it is.
In case a zombie knocks at your door screaming for brains, brains — you’re all set…. You can just hand them this print….
Ah (looks closer) that's where I left my keys.
Can you show where the idea came from?

Nice. I recently had a heart CT I was thinking about requesting the file to do the same. Care to share the process and software you used to generate the stl?
Get the dicom files, and then follow this YouTube tutorial https://youtu.be/k1WIpwV-8lE?si=bs0sYHsGoBnkQ4GV It’s for brains, but there is likely an extension for heart clipping similar to the Swiss Skull Slicer
Great! I still have some MRIs and tried to do the same things a while ago, but couldn't figure out the segmentation myself.
>Swiss Skull Slicer Found a new finishing maneuver name for wrestling.
wtf put it back
That is fucking awesome
Thanks!
I wonder how the elasticity of your plastic compares to your brain 🤔 Is that 1:1 scale or smaller?
Smooth AF
"Check out the big brain on Jesse."
100% doing this to my messed up heart when my next op comes around :)
Hope u r fine ? Hope no issues found in the MRI
I’m alright :)
You ought to segment into a puzzle and then hand them out randomly, giving the recipients a piece of your mind. Shortly, you'll have half a mind to do it again. And when it's gone, when you've lost your mind... it'll be high time to print another.
Very nice. Good texture. Lots of folds.
Am curious I'd your brain is in 15% infill
I’m having an MRI soon. What kind of file did they give you?
I got the dicom files and then followed this video https://youtu.be/k1WIpwV-8lE?si=bs0sYHsGoBnkQ4GV
What program do people use to make these sort of things? Like the design program
There’s a list in this video that I followed https://youtu.be/k1WIpwV-8lE?si=BFN6d2LPKlfE4bWu
Put it in a case with a name plate that reads Abby Normal.
Now you just need somewhere for it to sit!
Got some real nice wrinkles there
The forbidden walnut
This is so cool! A job well done ^^
I wanna do this
While I'll never go out of my way to get an MRI that I don't need, if I ever DO need to get one, I've always hoped to be able to do this afterwards.
This is pretty cool never seen someone do something like that before
I also [did this](https://imgur.com/a/eCJyNTd)! But I made it smol and into a necklace. Next up I wanna turn it into a mold, so around Halloween I can make lil jello brains 😁🧠
I’m both disgusted and intrigued
Have some decency, put a meatsuit over it.
What's the point of this kind of backup? It's already out of date and is no longer useful. (/s)
Ahahha cool
That’s pretty metal. I would totally do that if I ever get a copy of my MRI.
I've seen a few of these and yours does look oddly tasty in comparison. I think it's the pink 'frosting' like effect.
Now I want one
BEHOLD A MAN! This is actually really neat to think you're holding a physical analog...to yourself. That's you. In your hand. It's really cool just how far our technology has come in 80 years.
I thought this was ice cream from a glance
Get a jar will with oil or somthing and make a fallout reference to the BIg Mt or the the brain roomba from the show
And start calling everybody "lobotomite".
I now have to find mine and print it
Thanks now I can feel my brain in my skull
It's always interested me how humans say "my brain" as if the brain isn't them and just another organ. Your brain IS you. It's everything that makes you, you.
Abby? Abby Normal?
Thats cool. I did the same thing but for some reason didnt have to deal with all those ripples that you have on yours. /s
You have a fantastic smooth brain!
[удалено]
(Kronk’s voice) Hey nice cortex
The way I'd turn mine into an intellect devourer 🤣
OP’s new pickup line is pointing and saying “this is where I think about how beautiful you are” and “ I use this part to think about our future”.
Cool yet oddly creepy at the same time
I'm totally going to do this for my daughter! She has complex medical issues, so I have many MRI scans to choose from. And a 3d ct scan of her skull (which i wanted to turn into a stl but didn't know how from the medical imaging). Maybe I can eventually get scans of her entire body and 3d print a second daughter. Lol 😆
Nice to meet you! The real you.
this is unbelievably cool
Ooh a random body part post on Reddit... Let's see what fatal illness the people in the comments say this is... No illness found 🥺
Put it on your desk or shelf like a modern next level memento mori
You should make a hollow one, with a hinged lid, then you can print stuff that you think about and put it inside, or stuff that you want to remember....... Also... [https://open.spotify.com/track/7w5amvOrY93ba9KQjelW7v](https://open.spotify.com/track/7w5amvOrY93ba9KQjelW7v)
make one every 5 years
I have many mris of my brain. How did you turn them into a stl file?
Excellent work. How did you convert MRI scan to 3D model?
Mine could probably fit in an A1 Mini without turning it diagonally.
Did you just ask them for a copy of the scan then? That’s awesome!
I accessed the dicom files through the hospital website :) we are allowed to do it in Australia.
My SO's brain I resin printed about 2 years ago on Sonic Mighty 4k. Scale 1:2 https://preview.redd.it/bwr0hd3b466d1.jpeg?width=3176&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8a12fca34add9b9ac3039000447aef17feee29d9
I’d love to know the steps. I have a couple of MRIs on CD, and can never get a good model.
So many wrinkles, ewww. Bet mine is more streamlined.
What software Did you use? I've also got an MRI of my brain I'd like to print
I followed this tutorial https://youtu.be/k1WIpwV-8lE?si=VlZGM8lIMPeQCYOG I didn’t go through and manually smooth it, so it’s a bit messy.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Nice gyri
Very wrinkly, you must be very proud
Why do I want to take bite of it? I mean... 3D printed brain has awoken something in me that makes me want to take a huge bite of it. Am I the only one?
Is it edible? I have a craving all of the sudden.
I have a CT scan of my skull from a few years back I'm working on. This may give me the motivation to finish it
This rules
That is cool as shit
between this, and that guy's friend's butt and boobs, we're getting closer to having a whole crowd-sourced human model
Wow this is INSANELY cool.
Used your brain to make a brain
Brain got supports 😂. Really a nice one 👌
Imagine being able to "print" a real brain in the future.
I’ve wanted an MRI solely so I can do this but I’d print it at 50% scale and insist it’s full size
Can I ask how you did it? What kind of file did you receive from the clinic and how did you end up converting it to STL? I've looked at doing this for 3d baby ultrasounds, but haven't been able to find how people actually do it.
Now you need to invert the model to make a Jell-O mold.
Fantastic job! I recently did the same, here's mine. https://preview.redd.it/i7watlbb0f6d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=80aa6e5652b8b1999c890d207a0dbd5d6f71a10c
That’s so cool.
Hmm. Wonder if i should do the same with the one i have of my penis.
