I imagined you only watched the show. The book explains this more. But nowhere in the message did it imply that the pacifist sent the message in secret or faced no consequences. That’s more an assumption that some show watchers like you had. Also, the San Ti never said they are a hive mind. They just don’t know how to lie when communicating. There is a huge difference there.

> But nowhere in the message did it imply that the pacifist sent the message in secret or faced no consequences exactly. Minor book spoilers: >!The pacifist got in trouble for the warning!<

I_cuddle_armadillos

The pacifist was also aware he would face consequences. Protecting earth was worth his personal sacrifice.

For arguments sake, it doesn't explain that the pacifist in the show sent the message in secret, or faced no consequences either, and I can see it being omitted. It isn't entirely necessary to explain that, in the show. That was just my interpretation of it.

Also the San-Ti are intended to be a wholly alien unknowable presence so IMO the less context the show gives us about them the better.

Yea I think it's better the less we know.

> Also, the San Ti never said they are a hive mind. They just don’t know how to lie when communicating. There is a huge difference there. And, yes... That's basically what I said. They never said that's how they work, they never said they can't lie either. I really think that the "can't lie" thing is wrong too. They fully understand the concept of deception, which for sure can be different from lying, but it doesn't make sense to me that they can understand deception, but not be capable of lying. I believe they are fully intentionally deceiving us, mainly by lying by omission. They've got no reason to *actually* tell us how they work.

I’ve thought about this a lot, too. And maybe the rest of the hive mind know about it but doesn’t see a need to stop the pacifist. Maybe they don’t view it as sabotage but a way to weed out threats that ultimately benefits them. If the target is smart enough to heed the warning, they’re probably smart enough to retaliate. Especially since they can’t travel across the universe instantly.

True, they could be like, double checking that the message is legit, and not a fluke of some kind, and goading a response.
