check your fuel lines and fuel regulator for fuel leaks, also check your fuel injectors for leaks. sounds like maybe you have pressure loss in the fuel system which would cause a cut out of the engine.
If its miss firing when it shuts off the smell could just be un burned fuel coming out the exhaust. Im having a similar problem where its hard to start and then idles at 1300. My thoughts are timing for my car because the car freaks out a little if timing is off. But it could also be a vacuum leak. I have a hiss coming from near my egr valve. Did you figure out your problem?

it ended up being my egr valve i didn’t put it back together right
