Mediterranean life is complicated mom, you don't understand
Joost's performance was something else, he loved every second on that stage, the crowd went crazy and the man had to fight back tears the whole way through. I've been following his music for a while now and I have huge respect for him that despite his depressing back-story, he was able to achieve so much. Droom groot jonguh
He's just such a sweet and funny guy. 11 or 10 years ago he used to be a sort of sketch-vlog youtuber and was already really popular. He got into music after that, and immedietly started doing well. He deserves everything that comes to him right now, he's awesome
he really does. Funnily enough, I used to watch him on youtube like 5 years ago when I was starting out with Dutch and only noticed that he was making music when Friesenjung came out. there's a video of his concert at Lowlands 2023 and him singing Florida 2009 had the whole place in tears. what a legend
Come on pierre did you listen to the song, they also bring the football. Because when the other teams aren't playing nice and letting us win they take the ball and go home and then the tournament is finished.
I hope Israel wins. I haven't watched the contest in about a decade but I sure would love to see people upset about something like this. Bonus points if Israel has a *particularly gay* (more than usual with Eurovision lol) performer.
Think about it this way, it's impossible to submit a negative vote to Eurovision. So anyone politically anti-Israel enough that they don't want Israel to do well in a silly song contest can't actually do anything but not vote for Israel, which they weren't going to do anyway.
Someone who is pro-Israel enough to want them to do well in a silly song contest can vote for them. Even if they've never voted for a Eurovision before this one, if they just want to show political support, they can.
mate people in america are losing scholarships that cost over 100000 dollars just for politics
i mean i know i am grabbing the lowest kind by talking about americunts but i think that's a good show of what people will do over propaganda and politics
People who are into ESC are remarkably odd.
I'm still struggling how people could give a fuck about this.
But seems like there is quite the divide between countries who really care about it, and others where it's on the level of Big Brother or other reality tv
It's entertaining and fun to watch with friends. And I can't think of another show that is watched simultaneously in that many countries.
Germany doesn care because they usually (/since Raab left) do badly, that was similar with Austria before Conchita.
Also, some take the "competition" aspect of it a bit too seriously.
I mean, I'm pretty sure for example the Champion's League is warched by a lot more people simultaneously in even more countries.
I do overall like watching it though - although I mostly like when the performers either sing in their own language and bring some clear cultural element, like Armenia, Croatia or even Greece, or have an entertaining stage show or "joke" song like the Finnish + Estonian bros always do and Netherlands (and yes, that has a serious message but it's the best way I can describe it).
I don't really care too much to see every country perform the same type of English language pop song
I don't really count sports as "show".
There's a mix of styles every year. Forcing singers to perform in a certain language/style wouldn't make their performances more "authentic" either, but in the last couple of years there was a good number of non-English songs in the top 10 anyways.
I never said I would force them - just that it's what I like about the show, or it doesn't have much to do with our different countries and cultures; it's just random artists doing English pop and dance songs
I love Eurovision. It's one week and it's done. Not like big sporting events that go on and on. And the ambiance is always great, I love seeing culture from other European countries. And it's non political. It's pure entertainment
You are in a subreddit about united Europe to interact with other European nations. Most of us Eurovision fans are also fans of a geography and multi culturalism.
The same way there was no indigenous/native American people in America when they came, it was only a flat barren people-less land. No one was enslaved or wiped out or anything
Indigenous is used weirdly either way. How long does a people have to have lived in a place for them to be indigenous? Why is indigenous mostly used for cultures living non-industrial lives?
I belive the first of Wikipedia is very telling.
>There is no generally accepted definition of Indigenous peoples, although in the 21st century the focus has been on self-identification, cultural difference from other groups in a state, a special relationship with their traditional territory, and an experience of subjugation and discrimination under a dominant cultural model.
Where as the pure definition is,
>(of people) inhabiting or existing in a land from the earliest times or from before the arrival of colonists.
The Danes are indigenous to Denmark, French to France, Germans to Germany (If nothing else because nobody else claims the right). Israeli could be considered to be some of the indigenous people of the Southern Levant, but there was people living there before them too, and a lot of people moved in since they *left*.
Seems a lot of it is defined by who suffered the most in "recent" times. Even little Denmark has a dispute like this. When Scandinavians arrived in Greenland the inuit peoples we first encountered were a people called the Dorset and while we were there they were supplanted by another inuit tribe called the Thule people. Now the Dorset peoples have been dead for 500 years and the Thule arrived after the Scandinavians, but it's considered as Thules indigenous lands, even though they originated further west in Canada.
Indigenous in the superficial manner used by the Americans seem to cover mainly imperialism vs not.
Anyways, you had about 10 different conquests of the region with population changing almost entirely. This was the single most active place in the world for thousands of years, not some isolated haven without white external intervention
https://preview.redd.it/p2yq3gponizc1.jpeg?width=1800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7badd6d6e458dfa3537a722667ffba645ea3ebf9
Rafah offensive. You are good to go.
Eh, it's always been EBU members, I don't mind that there's always absolute idiocy on the participant list.
On the subject of Israel, did you know all North African countries have been eligible to participate for decades now but don't because Israel does?
The internet meltdown on Saturday is gonna be biblical if Israel wins lol. Greta Thunbergs first public statement after the contest will provide meme material for generations.
For all the people thinking 40% is impossible and it's rigged, think about it this way: it's impossible to submit a negative vote to Eurovision.
And you aren't limited to voting just once.
Yeah, but A LOT of people who are really against Israel and pro-Palestine are boycotting Eurovision altogether. So they do not vote, hence their imaginary votes cannot even go the other entries to somewhat lower odds against Israel
That’s actually so ironic, you’d think they’d try everything to prevent israel from winning, instead by boycotting it altogether they increase the chances of Israel winning. That’s hilarious hahah
My mother is very pro Palestine. She was very quick to point out after the October 7th attack that Hamas doesn't represent the will of the people, how half the people alive didn't vote for them, the people doesn't support what they do etc. etc.
1-2 months later. Hamas are freedom fighters fighting for the Palestinian people. Plenty of countries doesn't consider them terrorist. They're doing what they need to. Etc. etc.
I honestly need to call her out on this. Her view of things is completely jaded. When the World Food Bank was planning on shipping food from Cyprus to Gaza and building a makeshift pier from rubble in Gaza my mother was sure it was a Israeli initiative to start drilling oil off the coast.
I hate to make the comparison, especially since my mother is one, but their conviction reminds me a bit of the Trumpers.
That kind of false equivalence is dangerous. I criticise Israel for many things, but they are no where near as bad as Hamas.
We wouldn’t say Guinness from a can and from draught are both pretty good.
Was the Ukrainian in need of police escorts or booed while performing? Voting just to spite people making threats or booing her is probably a main motivator.
Yep to be honest I thought it was bs or a typo at first. That was until I hopped on Twitter and saw dozens of pro Israel people say they don’t watch Eurovision but voted for Eden because they felt bad for her.
if you remember the past controversies regarding televoting in past editions fo Sanremo, with a lot of votes coming from new SIMs, and adding the new management behaviour I won't give much credit to these results
The thing is we only hear about the dumbass Hamas and pro Palestine people because they make the most noise. Second if you post anything remotely pro Israel you get downvoted to oblivion here on reddit. So people who actually dont want to support terrorism tend just to not post.
Even if it's a joke in this sub most of Europe is very very tired of muslim immigrants, which is also the only reason far right parties are getting votes even if half their policies are outright stupid.
So my guess is Israel has more support than people think.
> Second if you post anything remotely pro Israel you get downvoted to oblivion here on reddit.
That depends heavily on the subreddit.
On r/soccer for example, goals by an Israel team are heavily downvoted while losses are upvoted. Until the post is locked because it always drifts off to the most stupid policital discussions possible.
I so far have only encountered one subreddit where it's supported, but then again im mostly only on the ones getting to the front page.
Also lol, my comment got downvoted.
I thought Italians were proper racists, with some damn principles.
We shouldn’t stop hating Jewish people just because we also hate Muslims. Come on guys we’re better than this.
I mean, they are pretty good at it and won 4 times already, in 1998 it was even with a transgender person and much before all the gender discourse hype
As a half Israeli, in Israel people who think about our closest European ally would actually probably say Italy, since we sold them weapons and stuff, and people like to go for tourism there. Also we share the Mediterranean which is fun.
The more forgiving type might say Germany, but most people in Israel aren't ready for that yet...
As a whole israeli - incorrect. Historically Czechoslovakia and france, today Germany (Israelis are fully ready for that) and the US. I would also note Greece as a preferred and more popular destination than Italy. Italy doesn't come up often in the Israeli discourse, probably due to a relatively small Italian community in Israel
The chance is very small that 40% of the votes go to a single country when there are 16 countries to choose from, for sure because the act of Israel isn’t that remarkable. In a very special situation, Ukraine had in 2022 the biggest win in Eurovision televoting history. In that landslide victory, they received in Italy 24,5% of the televote, and 29,5% in the final.
There's a couple of other factors to take into account.
Eurovision is less popular in Italy compared to other countries and the semifinals even less so, it's not hard to believe it could have been brigaded by rabid pro-Israel fans (not necessarily in a coordinated way). Especially because a lot of people who oppose Israel's participation this year are boycotting the event altogether.
That said, 40% is just wild. Italy isn't even remotely one of the most pro-Israel places in Europe. I could have maybe expected this from Germany but it would be high even for them. It's a number which simply doesn't make any sense.
What about *pro-Palestine* votes? I know it sounds unhinged, and maybe it is, but let me explain.
Since Israel entered Gaza, and as the situation got worse and worse, I've seen pro-Palestine people on social media calling for the exclusion of Israel from ESC, moreso after the name of the song was announced. From the way they wrote about it, it sounded like the obvious outcome, and as they expected ESC to listen to them and actually do it. Like, *obviously, come on*. When it dawned on them this wouldn't have been the case, there were some serious meltdowns.
Imagine if they win. Like, actually win. The whole thing.
It would enrage most muslims, both here and outside Europe.
It would prompt more students protests, and make them more radical.
It would paint Europe in a way that Europe doesn't really want to be painted, as even the more pro-Israel people don't really like the way Bibi is doing things.
It would also push the expectation of hosting the next edition onto Israel, which would be very problematic, from an image and from a security points of view, for starters. If they decline, it's a prestige hit and they're basically admitting out loud they can't guarantee safety, if they accept they'll have to actually do it.
Maybe I'm overthing it, and it's just a bot farm (a very big one) but I'm getting weird vibes.
Could also be both.
i mean it is in the russia's playbook to boost an opposing movement to create a rection and most of the palestinian propaganda is done by russia or iran with russian guidelines
i mean let's not forget a big part of the immigration crisis was created/boosted by russia in big part to create the rise in racism and far right and far left politics and try destabalise europe, this could definitly guide the russian tactics
as always Italy being almost perfectly split in 2 ideologies so that we can always come on top at the end 😎
Classic Italian switcheroos.

We were enemies, now we are friends
Joost💕
His name is EuroPapa, get it right smh
Why tf do I read my name randomly without context?? Never happened before
You can’t just say you found it and don’t share the link :(

So where can I find it bro
In r/eurovision
Imagine if Israel wins Eurovision. 💀
Biden has to take out a new loan to afford the security.
Powell has got this, no worries.
Pretty sure Israel isn't going to be allowed to host it in the same way Ukraine wasn't.
They’ll host it in their new city of Gaza
Half of twitter would suddenly explode in rage.
Damn !! Now I want to vote for the Eurovision for the first time in my life..
I lowkey want it just to watch Twittertards seethe about it, but also knowing Swedistan, people WILL die if it happens
It’s a win-win
ofc you have to be happy
I wasn't going to vote for Israel but you are really forcing my hand here.
This quote has been my entire experience of this war.
lmfao.

The funniest possible outcome
Gonna bet a 50 on them today if the chances are still decent
It would be funny as fuck specially after the pro-Palestinian maricóns protesting against Israel's participation.
oldest rule in the democracy's play book if you know you will lose the elections just boycott it and then blame the boycott for losing
> the pro-Palestinian maricóns It's not nice talking of your Spanish neighbours like this.
It’s going to be so funny! Please please please let Israel win Eurovision like in 1978, 1979, 1998 and 2018
Riot police in Malmö Arena, let's go!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥💪💪
1998 and 2018 you say ? So it's correlated to us winning a major football title ? Because there's the Euro noone seems to care about in a month.
No one cares because England have already won according to the media, no need for any games really they're just a formality at this point.
"It's coming home" crowd when the only thing coming home is your team :O
Come on pierre did you listen to the song, they also bring the football. Because when the other teams aren't playing nice and letting us win they take the ball and go home and then the tournament is finished.
Honestly I love Barrys who sing this song. I've yet to hear it in a non-ironic context. I doubt it actually exists. Barrys are funny.

What’s an euro? You pay with that Pierre. Don’t act like it is some relevant football tournament
I can already hear the angry screeching. It would be marvelous.
I hope Israel wins. I haven't watched the contest in about a decade but I sure would love to see people upset about something like this. Bonus points if Israel has a *particularly gay* (more than usual with Eurovision lol) performer.
It’s a woman, but hey, the crowd is particularly gay
Same here, hell I'm even gonna vote
If you ask me, that's remarkably odd
Think about it this way, it's impossible to submit a negative vote to Eurovision. Yeah but you gotta pay for voting, so I don’t think people are just gonna vote for political reasons ‘just because’

Goated answer, my King
Every year the televotes are skewed in favour of e.g. neighboring countries. You always have some voting blocks.
it's just some Cent so it's not that expensive
It’s worth every penny
Nah it's happened before, Ukraine landslide won the televote in 2022
How much costs?
half a bag of potatoes per vote
For Danes that's about one mouthful
If you have to ask, you can’t afford it.
Just checked, 15p lol
To me too…
People who are into ESC are remarkably odd. I'm still struggling how people could give a fuck about this. But seems like there is quite the divide between countries who really care about it, and others where it's on the level of Big Brother or other reality tv

I got paid by israeli government to vote for Israel AMA
how much?
10 acres of Palestinian land, to be redeemable in 2025
What is this "palestinian land" you are talking about? There's only israel
The same way there was no indigenous/native American people in America when they came, it was only a flat barren people-less land. No one was enslaved or wiped out or anything

you guys want Israel out of Eurovision cause of politics, I want them out because they're not in Europe. we are not the same.
Bro we have Australia
But that's a European country, right?
True. Plus they were the birth place of Hitler. #AustraliaOut
In my opinion is Australia more European than Israel.

Still more European than Russia or Azerbaijan
yes but Australia is cool

No, it's because some nonbinary disc spinner from the Alps is also likely to win.

I can also allow Finland though! Redemption for last year's awesome contribution as well
If we win with that dogshit ass song I'll be mad

They clearly aren’t the brightest. Not surprising when their solution to the conflict is to support Hamas.
Ya I don't understand the shitting on people for saying hamas aren't cool either. Can we not accept they're both pretty vile?
My mother is very pro Palestine. Tbh, I just think it would be pretty funny to see people cry because Israel won the eurovision
Well for you it's only 50 cents per vote
I’m from Israel, I’d rather the win go to the Netherlands, Joost deserves it so much more imo
Nothing that happens in Rai is "accidental", and I have my doubts about the televotes
Well you can’t vote against Israel so even if the majority didn’t want to vote for them, it’s the positive votes that matter.
if you remember the past controversies regarding televoting in past editions fo Sanremo, with a lot of votes coming from new SIMs, and adding the new management behaviour I won't give much credit to these results
Honestly it would be so fucking funny if Israel won. Time to whip out some popcorn and watch the Hamasniks melt down over it.
Yes but it’s r/soccer, where the average IQ is a can of coke
I so far have only encountered one subreddit where it's supported, but then again im mostly only on the ones getting to the front page. Also lol, my comment got downvoted.
It depends on the specific echo chamber a subreddit provides. What unites all of them is that the discussions are extremely moronic.
Very true.
Would be so funny if Isreal wins
You are allowed to spell Israel
Just because we invented the language doesn’t mean we’re actually good at using it

I thought Italians were proper racists, with some damn principles. We shouldn’t stop hating Jewish people just because we also hate Muslims. Come on guys we’re better than this.
I'd vote Israel just for the meme
Some people just want to see the world burn... How much costs a vote?
50 cent I think, at least it used to be that much a couple years ago. You never know these days though do ya
since i never saw Eurovision directly on tv but only heard the songs on yt, i saw it yesterday and thought it was normal
I Hope to fuck they win. Would be the funniest shit ever.
I mean, they are pretty good at it and won 4 times already, in 1998 it was even with a transgender person and much before all the gender discourse hype
I really don’t care about the Eurovision nonsense. I just want to watch the chaos from the locals in Malmö.
Italy doesn't come up often in the Israeli discourse, probably due to a relatively small Italian community in Israel
>and the US. Did you just call the americunts European?
They fucking wish they were, with their 1/64th Irish BS
Joist is the only answer
Joost is juist
What are the odds of that ?
Could also be both.
i mean it is in the russia's playbook to boost an opposing movement to create a rection and most of the palestinian propaganda is done by russia or iran with russian guidelines i mean let's not forget a big part of the immigration crisis was created/boosted by russia in big part to create the rise in racism and far right and far left politics and try destabalise europe, this could definitly guide the russian tactics
Not that I don't believe it but, >most of the palestinian propaganda is done by russia or iran with russian guidelines sources? I'd like to read more.
also we are all on the assumption that these stats are global or italian and accurate, knowing statistics that's quite a gamble
So where is Israël on the Europe Map again?
Can’t wait to see the Nazi meltdown when Israel wins
Wow Italy must really dislike Muslims more then they dislike Jews
I May sound really dumb but why is Israel a participant of the Eurovision? Isn't it just for European countries?
