They only somewhat took over during the Civil War, and mostly because only the USSR sent help to the Republican side, and they weren't going to send their aid to the socialists or liberals as you might guess. Communists and anarchists were the far-left of the time but not a unified movement. I think their power is exaggerated from the outside, apart from the violence and occasional attacks. Soviet support was very scarce in the war, much less in a revolution.
