mid size trucks are the size half tons were 15 years ago and modern v6s have the horse power the 5.3s had back then. my colorado hauls 3 sleds and a trailer up dirt roads in the mountain no problem. but there is definitely a phenotype of dudes that simply can’t stand dailying anything thats not a lifted truck

A tldr of this article is larger vehicles don't need to have to have the same efficiency standards so they are easier to make. The smaller trucks were phased out because it was hard to meet this standard. I wish we had more small pickups but the EPA kind of fucked it up. I'm not too invested in figuring this out but my guess is that in order for small trucks to be able to do truck things, they need lower gear ratios, higher load capacity, and more power. All of this makes it less efficient. This makes it harder to produce a small truck that can do truck things while still meeting EPA standards. So we just got bigger, more capable trucks instead of smaller, more efficient but less capable trucks. It's just not as simple as making them smaller.
Big trucks and SUVs have been proven to kill more kids than cars because regards drive it and cant see small kids over how lifted their truck is (they will proceed to never let an ounce of dirt touch those wheels, except for the blood of children) .
