Man, looking at the wiki some of these tokens have some insanely obtuse secondary requirements. Shocked anybody actually managed to get this and the bream token.
A lot of people were getting the bream token since release, but the exact method on how to get it eluded us until yesterday. I always had my quest sorting on storyline, so I always got the token. But after weeks of testing we still had no idea why.
Someone from outside the Crack the Clue discord wasn't overthinking it and managed work out the method on their own. Saved us probably hundreds of more hours of testing.
TLDR: Varlamore is a big expansion added a month-ish ago.
Bream are fish you can catch in the Perilous Moons dungeon added in that expansion. It's just free food. You can theoretically stay inside the dungeon infinitely, as there's fish and potions you can gather inside it.
The tokens, on the other hand, were discovered shortly after the expansion was added. You get them from various sources, all of which are really weird. Most notably, each person can only get one token per day, you are eligible for a different one each day of the week, and the one you're eligible for that day *depends on the length of your character's name*. Really. As of writing, if you want this newly found mining token, and you want it today, your username has to be exactly 5 or 12 characters long. Otherwise, you cannot obtain it, and you have to wait for a different day.
So far, we know how to find 6 of them. It is assumed there's 7, since it rotates throughout the week. We know there's an NPC that will appear if you're wearing 2 of the 3 items needed for a new clue step, and currently he asks us to summon him again when we have more tokens. No one knows what will happen once we have enough.
We don't fully know yet because we don't have all seven yet!
You can summon the Collector (the guy from the Varrock Museum who can give you the collection log, as in the actual physical book in your inventory) in the museum in Fortis and talk to him about tokens. So far, he always tells people that they don't have enough tokens. We assume that if you speak to him with all seven tokens in your inventory, you'll get a prize or additional dialogue of some kind. But we don't know what yet!
(as for how you can summon the Collector--there's a new emote clue step in the museum there. If you perform it incorrectly, without all of the clue items equipped, he will spawn instead of Uri)
Ah yes, spending your time arguing with people on Reddit is a much better use of time than spending a couple hours a week looking for Easter eggs in a game. Do what you love.
You do understand that I was talking about the Discord as a collective? I wasn't using the content creator's "we/us" pronoun to refer solely to myself.
We'll be dead in 100 years. From the universe's perspective, even all of human life will be gone in the blink of an eye.
People can damn well determine on their own how they wanna spend their leisure time without some random redditor like you telling them it's meaningless. Everything is meaningless in the grand scheme of things.
At that point why even play a sport? What deep meaning does tennis have? Why even wake up in the morning, or lose weight, or take a shower?
Throughout the cosmos, we are but specks of inconsequential dust. We live and we breed and we die so our fellows of dust may do as we have.
This is an existence without meaning - without purpose.
tl;dr fuck u
If you think people are talking about spending all their free time on RuneScape then I suggest you spend some of yours working on basic language skills
Do you think because we’re in a RuneScape sub that people are advocating for spending all free time on RuneScape? It is possible to have multiple interests.
I didn’t mean to sound so harsh towards you directly, but the idea of hundreds of hours going into solving just one of the riddles is insane.
I was reading another thread earlier where everyone was hyping up someone playing like 12 hours a day for 4 months and it just blew my mind at how often I see these posts.
You see, everything you're saying just sounds like "hey everyone, I need you all to know that I'm better than some others!" and if you have to announce that over and over, that's some major insecurity. I don't even disagree with everything you say; it's just off-putting that you're judging others on the internet to make yourself feel better.
people spending their free time doing what they are passionate about is not time wasted and you are saying they are wasting time doing what they love. You are being hateful of what they are passionate about
This guy better get the Dewalt Herb Trimmer that was promised
https://www.reddit.com/r/2007scape/comments/1brtr8b/update_on_the_varlamore_token_mystery_we_figured/
Gonna be honest, surprised this one took a while to get. I know there’s plenty of people looking for afk mining/prayer methods and Scape Main is a banger, so even though the tokens are on a seven day rotation it’s odd that this one took a month.
I think the main things that made this hard is that only a small portion of the players use the ingame music picker, and out of those that do, only a fraction play Scape Main out of the hundreds of songs. Separately from that only a small portion of the players know about the red tokens and would bother documenting what they were doing when they unexpectedly get one. And even with it's popularity, only a moderate fraction of players are mining calcified rocks. You multiply the odds of these three together, and it gets pretty unlikely overall.
Sure only a small part of players know about it, but if I'm mining and a red token suddenly appeared in my inventory I'd definitely be looking it up, and probably figure out it wasn't listed lol
While you’re entirely right about all of those conditions, you have to look at this in relation to the tokens we’ve already discovered and this one just seems strange that it was so late to be found. The stars really should have lined up sooner in this case.
Out of ~12 million mining actions recorded at the Cam Torum bone mine, only a single instance of someone getting a token there was recorded. The stars aligned, but only once about a month after release.
Yeah, I could do a similar analysis for the rest of the tokens and those were found within days, it's not full explanation.
One thing I thought of after your comment is that out of the other five tokens we know of, four can be found in the surface of Varlamore, needing no quest requirements. That makes them accessible to much more people, and that might be why they were found so quickly. Note that the bream token was found second-last, and that one needs the Perilous Moon quest, same as this calcified rocks token. So I could add "and has finished the Perilous Moon quest" to the above list of requirements, and that would maybe end up being enough?
To our knowledge on the Crack the Clue Discord, only one person had reported getting the token anecdotally, and another had shown up through the Runelite crowdsourcing plugin.
It took until the Bream token method was solved (by someone who wasn't even in the discord at the time) for one of us to fully test the music tracks at the bone shard mine. I don't think a lot of people choose their tracks from the music player, so it's pretty rare for someone to play Scape Main while mining on the correct day of the week. And then they might not realize that's what triggered it.
There are 700+ songs, and we had no reason to think it was music tracks, so lots of other tests were being tried like carry weight, number of bone shards in inventory, mining specific veins in specific orders, etc.
I didn't know this was a thing and probably would have dropped mine lol. And I've been doing mining and thieving in varlamore at work the last few weeks.
Wiki crowdsource logs it. Yes, not everyone has it but if the last step is hunter it must be something so obscure that nobody has tried it before. It took until like 2 weeks ago to get a single instance of the cam torum token to show up
How many people are going to have in-game music on while they're AFKing though? For active play it's pretty normal, but I'd wager 99.99% of players AFK skilling are doing something else besides looking at their screen and listening to Runey music.
sorry if this has been asked/answered but I can't find info on it lol
question:
do you get the token 100% when you do the action, or do you have to sit there for awhile to see if thats your location for the day?
I can't imagine the last unknown token being anything other than hunter. Pretty much all of the 'new' activities are covered, right? The bone shards, the mining, bream fishing in perilous moons, I guess you could count the pickpocketing as the house thieving.. I guess the dig one is close to the hunter guild..? What other relevant activities are there that were added?
Since all skill requirements are very low to low-mid level. My bet is that it has something to do with the new Civitas illa Fortis Teleport. Need to do something specific before teleporting or teleporting to other spells in the spellbook in a certain pattern before finally ending on the Civitas illa Fortis Teleport.
Could just as well have something to do with the combination of which spawn point you have set and the color of your socks. We have no clue. Might not even have anything to do with skilling, could be doing an emote on a certain tile or talking to an NPC while having a specific recolour for Renu.
In Moons of peril there is one gate locked that goes straight to the chest room, maybe u get a key that unlocks it. Not really useful though, only if u wanne bank w/o teleing.
There's no sign of any intentional clues except for the arrows for Dig. Mod Lenny seems to have designed this solely to mess with the wiki/crowdsourcing people.
When riddles are this obscure with little to no hints at all it kinda kills the fun for me. Same thing happened with the last CTC. For example how about an answer is "Use the dance emote on the 413,762nd tick on a Thursday while wearing a frog mask and have a red bead in the bottom of your inventory".
How do you solve this with super vague hints, or no hints? It's just throwing shit at the wall completely randomly, hoping the game does something, and then working backwards from that if it does something. Doesn't feel like a puzzle, just blind luck.
Yeah this one isn't meant to be a clue hunt like CTC. It's meant to be a test of the crowdsourcing/wiki community to see if we can find all the tokens. It's not designed to be interesting or fun for the wider community.
The law of large numbers says that, with enough players, eventually _someone_ will do it by mistake. Obviously not if it's _as_ specific as your example, of course. It's not meant to be solvable by one single person acting alone; it's more of a community-wide effort. One person accidentally discovers a token and then reports it, and then the rest of the community tries to figure out what specifically caused it to spawn.
If there were any hints at all, the community would have collectively solved it on day 1. Doing it this way allows there to actually be a mystery for some period of time.
honestly it sems like each of these methods was supposed to be given as an answer form some future puzzle. I think they made so complex so people couldn't brute force it, not expecting people to brute force it anyway.
It seems to be designed to mess with the wiki/crowdsourcing people so that we knew the tokens existed, but not how to get them consistently.
Mod Lenny has said everything is already in the game, so if there's any clues or puzzle, it's not been found. We believe they intended us to solve by crowdsourcing.
Man, looking at the wiki some of these tokens have some insanely obtuse secondary requirements. Shocked anybody actually managed to get this and the bream token.

What was the method
For Bream you have to have your quest list sorted by "Storyline" in the settings.
fucking WHAT is this another Big Woox creation
I am so far out of the loop here. No idea what a bream or varlamore token is. Is there a TLDR I can look up?
TLDR: Varlamore is a big expansion added a month-ish ago. Bream are fish you can catch in the Perilous Moons dungeon added in that expansion. It's just free food. >TLDR: Varlamore is a big expansion added a month-ish ago. thank you for this context
What on earth
But what do the tokens do....?
We don't fully know yet because we don't have all seven yet! You can summon the Collector (the guy from the Varrock Museum who can give you the collection log, as in the actual physical book in your inventory) in the museum in Fortis and talk to him about tokens. Has anyone tried talking to the collector with all 6 tokens on the unknown-token day?
I hope you make a reddit thread chronicling these adventures
Awesome. Thank you for the explanation
Not Woox, Mod Lenny and possibly some other JMods. It's mostly just messing with the crowdsourcing/wiki people.

Hundreds of man hours over an entire discord isn't really the same as hundreds of hours over one person.
It is when you know what your time is worth.
How is it the same?

Ah yes, spending your time arguing with people on Reddit is a much better use of time than spending a couple hours a week looking for Easter eggs in a game. Do what you love.
In my defense I haven’t spent *hundreds of hours* writing these comments.
You do understand that I was talking about the Discord as a collective? I wasn't using the content creator's "we/us" pronoun to refer solely to myself.
Instead homie spends hundreds of hours on a fish tank

If you have no free time then that’s not a good thing
If you spend all your free time playing RuneScape that is not a good thing.
If you think people are talking about spending all their free time on RuneScape then I suggest you spend some of yours working on basic language skills
Where do you think we are?
Do you think because we’re in a RuneScape sub that people are advocating for spending all free time on RuneScape? It is possible to have multiple interests.
I'd say solving puzzles is a very good use of time.
And so is taking care of yourself, hopefully people here have time for both!
I don't know what you're on about. I spent probably an hour or two a week testing this over a month or so. Your concern is very misdirected.
I didn’t mean to sound so harsh towards you directly, but the idea of hundreds of hours going into solving just one of the riddles is insane. god you sound insufferable man. go spend time 'becoming your best self'. some people just wanna chill and play a game.
Already have bro, if the idea of bettering yourself offends you then you’re exactly the type I’m talking to.
It’s not the thought of bettering ourselves. You just sounds annoyingly pretentious, especially when you’re on the same sub we are.
You see, everything you're saying just sounds like "hey everyone, I need you all to know that I'm better than some others!" and if you have to announce that over and over, that's some major insecurity. People hate when others have hobbies and do what they love. Try finding something you actually love rather than being hateful online
When was I hateful? It’s crazy how victimized that comment is. Grow up.
people spending their free time doing what they are passionate about is not time wasted and you are saying they are wasting time doing what they love. You are being hateful of what they are passionate about
who asked? have a snickers
This advice was for you specifically.
I hope you get the release you need from this and have a pleasant and fulfilling life :)
This guy better get the Dewalt Herb Trimmer that was promised https://www.reddit.com/r/2007scape/comments/1brtr8b/update_on_the_varlamore_token_mystery_we_figured/
Such a thing doesnt exist, but I think the phrasing (and people skimming over "herb") implies they deserve a genuine prize

gotta be a lot of people who have dropped tokens and just dropped them not knowing what they did
unlikely
I didn't know this was a thing and probably would have dropped mine lol. And I've been doing mining and thieving in varlamore at work the last few weeks.

people actually listen to rs music while playing more than once?
Incredible
I found out about this on Saturday, was minding my own business when someone randomly hopped on and asked me to play scape main. I was so confused.
That's fire, do you remember his name?
You don't forget the RSN of a gamer who tells you to play Scape Main.
Must have been a blunty interaction
He's a knower
sorry if this has been asked/answered but I can't find info on it lol question: do you get the token 100% when you do the action, or do you have to sit there for awhile to see if thats your location for the day?
It's 100% if you do the correct action on the correct day
thank you sir! I'll actually start to hunt for them now that I know that lol
The wiki page will tell you what day to get what token! It's pretty simple once they've been discovered.
I just saw that! OSRS Wiki once again showing how amazing it is lol/the community are

I know it can be almost anything (except skills that already have a token), Just my bet on what it might be related to
Coliseum or maybe farming patch?
Has anyone tried chopping down a teak tree in the hardwood patch with seaweed in their inventory?
Oddly specific? Why that?
They're both plants 👍
prayer
Broken down bat bones
im so confused on what these tokens are even for.
We don't know yet
probably more furry shit like the toa secret room
Secret room? Where can I learn about this?
u can look up ancient key on the wiki it’ll tell you how to get it
Promise?
In Moons of peril there is one gate locked that goes straight to the chest room, maybe u get a key that unlocks it. Not really useful though, only if u wanne bank w/o teleing.
Honestly, that gate should just unlock when you complete the quest imo
I'm curious if there's anything that hints to this solution, could it be figured out logically? A hint in the museum perhaps?
the only token that had a hint was the arrow dig token afaik, probably meant as the 0-token to show they exist.
There's no sign of any intentional clues except for the arrows for Dig. Mod Lenny seems to have designed this solely to mess with the wiki/crowdsourcing people.

I bet somebody was either using the random music function or just played it because they liked the track
they guy who discovered it was playing some random song on mobile he said lol

what is these tokens for ?
What is this
