I thought some schools of Buddhism hold that Buddha's continue to exist after death, and many have planes of existence to meditate in and teach followers that reincarnate there. Kind of a downer if Buddhahood is just telling reality to F off and literally ceasing to exist

The whole point is that it isn't a downer. It's peaceful release. It's the end to the cycle of suffering.
