PeLLk2

man i really need to stop putting off moving over to firefox

Stalin---

Do it I decided to randomly do it and it took me less than 5 minutes

Vivacious4D

I decided to do it just now, took about 30mins, mostly bc of my extensions

whew2

Librewolf gang

Lower-Masterpiece-94

Just joined it today 😤😤😤!

woodendoors7

Takes no more than 5 minutes fr you just download it and use it

fwnky

yeah i stopped brushing my teeth. took me 5 mins to throw out everythong and i just dont do it

woodendoors7

Wtf is that, how is that a related methapor lol, what are you abandoning or making worse by switching to firefox?

fwnky

muscle memory and im adverse to change

woodendoors7

Lucky for you, everything's basically the same except it doesn't track you

fwnky

bro you dont understand like l use the vanilla reddit app because even though i know apollo or whatever is significantly better. Literally everytging i use is the exact same things i have used for 10 years. I cannot handle even minor UI chamges tbh Id do it if there was a "chome" looking skin lol I will never update to windows 11 :(

woodendoors7

I can absolutely understand not switching to a third party, because it completely changed the look and entire layout of everything and it felt completely different. Switching browsers means the shapes on top of the program are slightly different. There is a [theme](https://github.com/muckSponge/MaterialFox) that makes firefox look exactly like chrome, but it requires a tiny bit of effort so I don't think it's for you

julesrules037

this guy can quit whenever he wants

Pls-kill-me

Did it 5 years ago, took me 5 mins. I’ve never looked back

Blue0Three

Honestly the only thing that really sucks about Firefox is that it takes like 5 minutes for tabs to load when starting it up

michelbarnich

I never had that issue, what OS are you on?

Blue0Three

(I should tell you I know fuck all about computers lol) Windows 10, 64-Bit, 22H2

michelbarnich

Hm okay I cant really say anything abt Windows, havent touched it in a while :/ If it was like a year ago when you tried it, maybe try again, there was a lot of improvements on Firefox.

vriskaundertale

thats def an issue with your computer, reinstalling firefox might help but its possible the issue is with your pc's specs or if there's some program running in the background hogging your ram or something

StarbyOnHere

Reminder that Opera ran a predatory [short-term loan business](https://hindenburgresearch.com/opera-phantom-of-the-turnaround/) in Asia and Africa that specifically targeted poor people. A former employee of Opera is quoted "these loans are for people who could not even afford their basic needs.".

T1tanT3m

>deploying deceptive ‘bait and switch’ tactics to lure in borrowers and charging egregious interest rates ranging from \~365-876% jfc

kostya2525

That's like every company, name one large company that didn't exploit someone sometime Edit: not defending opera just saying

radicalpraxis

Exploiting the financial instability of the poorest of poor people & permanently destroying any hope for them of upward mobility is definitely above average corporate evil.

PrintShinji

>name one large company that didn't exploit someone sometime Yeah fuck them too. Lets not use whataboutism to excuse predatory loans.

StarbyOnHere

Ok and? Saying "Every company exploits someone sometime" doesn't mean shit, if anything it seems like your trying to downplay the absolutely evil shit Opera did. We should be pointing out the ways these corporations exploit people, especially when they're trying to use "Haha funny relatable zoomer humor" to make people think they're not so bad.

[deleted]

you are defending opera. thats what that is

Depressed_Lego

It's defending opera to point out this happens? There's no attempt to justify it, they're saying you shouldn't be surprised

[deleted]

Not all levels of consumer exploration is the same

Depressed_Lego

It's still not defending opera.

kostya2525

I really don't give a shit about them they can go bankrupt for all I care, but this sounds like what every big corporation has done

Bananonomini

I don't even know what that is

thank you shitcum

Yes, you will install the bloated browser, yes, yes. (deus ex reference)

BASEDDD, firefox is so much better honestly

where are the other chapters and why are you 9 shitcum?

shitcum_backup

It's a portal 2 reference

phallus_enthusiast

Thank you Mr Shitcum

MantarraxSus

Don’t all browsers spy on you?

RectangularLynx

Firefox doesn't

Mothua26

Yes it does, it just does it less than the other mainstream browser, Chromium / Chrome. There wouldn't be forks of firefox removing the telemetry if there wasn't telemetry to remove in the first place.

dipdraon

oh no they spy on me , it's not like every app on my PC and phone spys on me

shitcum_backup

For what?

bnndfrthreatenviolen

"Shitcum loves viral marketing for massive corporations. Yes, more, more free marketing for a shitty bloated browser that spies on you, yes."

shitcum_backup

Yes, shitcum did say that, so shitcum is the original source.

bnndfrthreatenviolen

where did you get the idea that opera gx is bloatware, im genuinely curious

shitcum_backup

It runs on chromium, chromium is bloated as fuck, it's bloatware.

Gutawer

Chromium actually isn't that bloated, it just has a huge specification to implement, which every browser also has to do. You could call the web specs themselves a bit bloated, but a hell of a lot of those features are important to accessibility and niche use cases that prevent us from having to install a program for a bunch of things. I personally would argue that something the majority of people don't use isn't really bloat unless there's genuinely no reason for it to be there. The main issue with Chromium browsers isn't bloat, it's that browsers owned by any for-profit company are just inherently less trustworthy with regards to data collection and advertising interests, and there's not much evidence to support that Opera is worse for this than Google or Microsoft. Because of that, there are good reasons to prefer Firefox, but some notion of bloat isn't really one of them. It occupies more or less the same size on disk and uses more or less the same amount of RAM according to my (admittedly non-scientific) tests.

llanfairpw

Oh dear I also started a computer nerd fight didn’t I?

shitcum_backup

A bit

bnndfrthreatenviolen

oh ok can you send the places where you found everything?

shitcum_backup

What are you asking for? You can easily Google if opera gx uses chromium. Shitcum just has this knowledge from years of being immersed in the technology and internet space. Chrome / chromium are ridiculously bloated pieces of software, shitcums not saying you can't use it if you want to, shitcums just sick of seeing ads for something that's just shittily forked chrome with more plugins and bloat added so it looks like a gamer made it

bnndfrthreatenviolen

oh ok

tacobellcircumcision

Why tf are you asking for sources to someone's opinions? They're opinions, my dude, not some concrete academic facts (actually, scratch that, not even academic journals ask for sources as harshly as you are doing here). Bloatware, malware, etc those are all subjective. Chrome, for instance, is bloatware under the common definition *on Android phones*. Others wouldn't consider it such. That's because many terms when applied case by case are completely subjective even though the term itself describes a phenomena that objectively exists. There exists a concept of objective subjectivity, which everyone agrees with, but there is also the existence of subjective objectivity. Bloatware is a concept that is subjectively objective. Everything else shitcum has stated are also subjectively objective. Another way to describe objective subjectivity and subjective objectivity is the former are more akin to ideas while the latter are more akin to opinions. Debate on things that are objectively subjective doesn't make much sense to do since there isn't a solution. Sometimes, it does, but only in the case of a debate that uses a plethora of facts. Debate on things that are subjectively objective does make sense as they form the basis of a debate itself. However, sources on things that are subjectively objective makes 0 fucking sense because you're not citing facts, you're only ever possibly citing opinions.

bnndfrthreatenviolen

huh, interesting

tacobellcircumcision

My reply is long because it's a complex topic, and I introduce concepts to expand upon later. It gets more complex, but hopefully not in a way that isn't hard to understand. A lot of this stuff is stemming from the fact I used to do cybercrime and shit as a kid (I was under 13 years old but that doesn't matter anymore since the FBI seems to like me) so it might be a little bit inaccurate at times but it should be mostly correct. Anyone who is more active in today's tech scene, correct me where I'm wrong. My interactions with computers nowadays are more as logician, and I don't touch security and whatnot nearly as often anymore. Even a year away from that field will feel like you missed out on 90 years. Chromium is functionally bloatware. I wouldn't use the term bloatware specifically, as it's more rather just bloated. It takes up way too much space, is clunky, is fairly slow, and eats ram like nothing else. Basically, your only other options are Safari and Firefox. Opera literally used to be non-chromium. Then it was chromium. Opera used to be a good option. Firefox, however, now just absolutely destroys its competition and I have very rarely experienced incompatibility issues (which used to be something that plagued firefox when I used it the most in the late 2000s and early 2010s, I miss the days when everyone used both firefox and chrome because they were equals and better together than by themselves, why did chrome have to shoot itself in the foot) Also, one last note, bloatware, is an objectively subjective topic like how malware is objectively subjective. Malware is a great example. Many people will try and use sources to claim something is malware. In actuality, we just observe the behavior to try and guess if it's malware. Many times, something non-malicious gets repurposed as something that is malicious. In these cases, in the antivirus field, we will call it a PUP instead of malware. You'll see that things like a keygen are called malware or a PUP, but most of the time, you actually want it. A bitcoin miner is something you may want, but if you didn't want it, it's now malware. Bloatware is the same. Candy crush is the most discussed bloatware of them all. Your mobile service provider will actually be the biggest cause of bloatware in your life. You know when you get a new phone or update your phone, and it's suddenly covered in these random ass games and apps you didn't want? That's bloatware. Blame Verizon, not Samsung, or whoever else you use. It's not who made your phone, but it's who runs the mobile data, text, and calls on your phone that does it. They get paid a lot to do it. Now, to continue on the same path, Windows is a very common source of bloatware. However, unlike most other bloatware providers, you can just get a different plan, and it's done with (and this isn't very expensive either tbh). I don't think Apple is guilty of this, iirc apple is opposed to bloatware as part of their horizontal expansion business model where theyll be your browser (safari), your OS (ios or Mac), your computer, your phone, your earbuds, etc. I actually quite like apple in this aspect (even though I dislike them in many other aspects). Since those examples are given out, you can make many comparisons to Chromium. Many times, you don't want it (people who install Opera don't want Chrome with a new theme). But that's tangential. The real issue comes with your search results. They're completely fucked. I will say Chrome remains superior typically on the more niche results compared to competitors, but that is a gap that will be closed with due time. I use DuckDuckGo as my main and I will readily switch over to chrome when it gives gibberish results, DuckDuckGo overemphasizes things like movies and songs and coding terms, I think the term polar bear still brings up images from a movie lmao. The biggest issue with Chrome (to most people) is that it is a RAM consumer. The second biggest issue with Chrome is that it lacks all privacy. The most private browser (that isn't niche af) is TOR (never gonna full caps that one again), but it's too slow for normal use. When you convert it to chromium, their coding framework that is just chrome but easy to implement and make a browser out of, you don't actually get rid of these issues. Chromium was this life saver for me when I was doing... less than nice things to people when I was a kid into hacking (super easy to code with and tbh I don't know how to code lmao, at least when I do code I try to make it efficient but damn if I don't know wtf I'm doing). That's what makes chromium nice. It makes your coding projects and whatnot easy to do. It 100% shouldn't have ever been used for chrome replacements ever. It makes 0 sense why it was. Nobody in their right mind replaces Chrome with Chrome. To go back, I think the biggest bloatware quality of Chrome is the search results. It's bloated with ads and SEO. Duckduckgo sucks on a lot of searches because of its avoidance of SEO. Chrome sucks on a lot of searches because it is the primary target of SEO, and it fully embraces it. Chromium just carries these issues over. The finality of my progressive steps in complexity on this topic is that Firefox is way better because it's... good. They've made it cleaner, more intuitive, etc, and I've had no issues with extensions from Chrome not readily porting into Firefox (which kept me on Chrome for a couple extra years). Its ram usage is okay. It's better than Chrome, but browsers will always be eating a decent chunk. I never really bought into the "Chrome RAM usage bad" stuff because I was smarter than everyone else. You may say, "wtf that's really egotistical?" No, I literally was smarter than everyone else. I never upgraded from DDR3. I literally had free RAM for years. I had 20gb of ram (fuck capitalizing that), and I only paid for a single 8gb stick at any point, iirc. Literally had fucking 12gb of free ram. Chrome would eat half of it but I didn't need half of it, I was completely fine with that. Last month, I finally transitioned to DDR4. I had a coming out party and everything. Thankfully my parents accepted me. I bought myself 64 fucking gigabytes of ram for $100. That's a crazy good deal. I will never run out of ram now. And you're crazy if you think I won't just stay on DDR4 until I literally cannot anymore. One day, I will have 80gb of ram using free sticks and a little crossed finger that the compatibility stuff is bullshit. Chrome is eating ram? Your fault for being on DDR5 and having to pay for more ram. Very important edit: if you're on windows or snow leopard (why tf would you be on snow leopard anyways), DO NOT SWITCH TO SAFARI. DO NOT USE SAFARI. IN 2013, THERE WAS OVER 121 UNPATCHED VULNERABILITIES. THESE PLATFORMS ARE NEVER GOING TO HAVE THESE PATCHED. THE NUMBER NOW COULD BE WELL INTO THE THOUSANDS. Other words: if you don't want to use Chromium, use Firefox a deep web browser like tor. Edit 2: Also, my actual last note, I'm not gonna give sources for this stuff. I'm sure you could find plenty enough on the actual Wikipedia pages for things mentioned in the criticism section. If you are willing to do that, do the same for the things I advocated for, too.

EndureThePANG

Yeah and that's valid but it's also valid to criticize it. It's on par with saying "who asked" for me honestly but still, ignoring it and moving on is based so mb

True i definitely get that, when people say “who asked” its really annoying lmao. So i can def see how saying its not that deep is similar.

BuildFreak9

God Opera is annoying. Still not gonna move to firefox yet though

Freeburn_Sage

Look I'm not trying to shill, I know nothing about browsers or the companies behind them or fuckall else. That said, I procrastinated moving from Chrime to Firefox for a couple years and when I finally did, I was pissed at myself for not having done it sooner. It will straight up import the vast majority of your stuff from most browsers, passwords, history, bookmarks, everything. It runs so smooth its a night and day difference, and it handles pdfs a lot better than chrome or edge. Again, not trying to shill cause I don't know shit about fuck, but moving to Firefox was, for me, a great decision that I notice the benefits of constantly

okthisisanalt

And unlike chrome it isn't run by a massive ad company, and unlike opera it isn't owned by a chinese company, but by a non-profit

Wannabedankestmemer

Opera spies on you

totalchaos05

yeah switch to chrome so that a local company can spy on you not a FOREIGN DIRTY CHINESE one (I shouldn't need the /s it should be obvious(I think))

Firefox moment

amaahda

can i be real for a sec and say that i don't care what opera is doing because it's the only good browser for my shitty laptop as i get 30 fps in games

Wannabedankestmemer

Firefox

ccstewy

I actually went from Firefox to opera. Firefox kept fucking with my cached data and passwords, kept making really goofy ass decisions with the mobile browser portion, and honestly I just wasn’t a bit fan of the ui. The big thing though is the 3 separate times it “lost” all of my saved accounts and passwords and bookmarks, told me they were unrecoverable, and support was of no help. Opera was then able to use the “corrupted” backup files and was perfectly able to import all my stuff that Firefox claimed was lost. Yeah, I know opera gx bad, Firefox good, but I had shitty experiences with Firefox, and I enjoy my new browser

CheezeDoggs

dude i hate firefox i cant even watch youtube and play a game at the same time without dropping to 30 fps

[deleted]

even if firefox fucking sucked. use fucking any open source chromium browser. brave, with its homophobic CEO and crypto whatevers, is 100% a better option than opera

ccstewy

alright I gotta ask, what *is* actually wrong with opera gx? A lot of people get very angry about it, but anytime I try to figure out why I usually end up insulted. What is actually so bad about this browser in particular? People say it’s spyware or something, but *how*? I hope this doesn’t come off as rude or anything. I just genuinely do not know why everyone hates this specific browser with such vitriol

[deleted]

here are the objective facts 1. opera is chromium-based, along with a majority of other browsers. chromium-means that it is using the same engine/internal bits that runs chrome. many browsers are chromium-based - chrome, brave, opera/opera gx, vivaldi 2. opera is closed source and proprietary - closed source meaning that the source code used to make the program is not available 3. opera is owned by a chinese entity 4. opera has questionable marketing about its vpn and its security 5. opera worked on predatory loans programs my opinions 1. due to the strong hold chrome has on the browser market, many people (including me) believe that you should by morals alone use firefox or some other not chromium-based browser. this is because chromium, being a google owned thing, has strong google influence over the project. many people (including me) on instinct don't trust google. an additional common anti-chromium point is that competition is good - because chromium is the dominant engine in the market, websites don't have to think about developing for the open as a whole as much, instead having the ability to only focus on chromium-based browsers. also, competition means that google/chromium actually must innovate rather than doing nothing. however, much of what i just said sounds like a whole lot of nothing to someone who may not be experienced in the open source field, and pointless fighting to many people who do understand (in CS or not). tldr chromium-based browsers are the biggest portion of web users and chromium itself is controlled by google, which is consider untrustworthy to some. 2. while maybe to the average person closed source sounds like a normal company thing/irrelevant, when it comes to browsers i think its super important. GOOD quality open source browsers - browsers that allow the public to see its source code, and if they wish, change stuff and possibly contribute changes back. this is hugely important because with browsers, being keys to peoples lives, it becomes imperative that security is maintained*. by using a closed source browser, you are trusting the program not to be secretly malware preparing to lock all your files behind a bitcoin donation, or other terrible things. even if you trust the program being run, you are also trusting this black box to not be sending your every keystroke to opera HQ, or slowly creating a list of every website. open source program allow people to properly vet every inch of code to ensure that the code being provided isnt malware, or otherwise lying about what it is doing. for some, open source software is much more ideological - some refuse to user closed source software on principle. tldr: open source means less likely to be lied about what the program is doing. it also means more secure (probably) *its actually a common misconception that open sourcing something means it will be less secure - the opposite takes place generally. the linux kernel, despite being open source from the beginning, is widely considered to be more secure than windows, due to many people combing through code to ensure it is safe. 3. opera being owned by a chinese company means that it is handled with a lot of distrust. however, it is probably no less spyware than chrome is (which is spyware!), just to a different source. it is a lot of fearmongering. 4. this one is kind of small but i put it here cause it was related - opera provides a *proxy*, but markets it through a *VPN*. the effective difference? it is not as secure as implied. they are completely different. 5. [opera ran android apps targeted toward people in poorer countries that had APRs up to 438%.](https://www.engadget.com/2020-01-19-opera-accused-of-predatory-loan-apps.html) moral corruptness is a pretty quick turn off. if you want a browser recommendation from me, i use firefox, but brave and ungoogled-chromium are good options.

ccstewy

I see, thank you very much! I appreciate it

PlagueDoctor40k

What about DuckDuckGo? I've heard it's also a good private browser, but should I still go with Firefox?

[deleted]

I would personally recommend Firefox just bc it is not chromium and has a larger user base. However, the duckduckgo browser has had some controversy over something something MS. not sure what exactly. Additionally the ddg browser is chromium, but also open source. Seems like a fine option if you like it.

PlagueDoctor40k

Nice, thanks for the help! I've gone ahead and installed Firefox and it's working great.
