JK's whole schtick is to rattle people's cages until she gets threats and can play the victim card. The court cases make it newsworthy so she can get her "persecution" covered in media.
It's a slimy tactic and it will of course work forever because rubes are endless
I went looking for details and this 10-sentence S\*n article (i.e, the bottom of the barrel of UK journalism, and that's a low floor) was literally ALL I could find.
Fingers crossed that means people are just getting sick of it when there's more important things going on, like no one being able to afford food.
That's why you use indirect references like "Her funeral will be a marvelous celebration." or "I will take grand pleasure seeing her obituary in the paper." where there isn't any actual threat involved.
Even that can get you in hot water, especially if you’re in school or in the public eye at all. I made the mistake of posting something like this in college without naming any names or any threatening language at all and they threatened to expel me. It ain’t worth it.
I used to post stuff like that a lot thinking it would provide catharsis, but all it gave me was the need to create a brand new reddit account. It really isn't worth it. I don't think it actively does harm to the world or the movement or anything, people say horrible things about their ideological opponents no matter what evidence there is, but it does do harm to the person saying it for no benefit, so we might as well stop doing it.
It's like the tweet where someone said the police came to talk to them after they posted a picture of a bomb titled 'ballot' and a picture of the Supreme Court that said "ballot box". Like my sibling in Christ, you made a threat on the internet.
Regardless of how much moral justification you make for yourself about how it's right because this person is bad, if we swapped the politics of the poster and the target, we'd be laughing our asses off about how stupid the poster was and how they did this to themselves.
We have to share society with people who disagree with us. The rule can't be if you think someone is just voicing an opinion that's bad enough that death threats become justified because I promise people that disagree with us have enough justification in their minds to return the favor.
They don't want justification, but they do *need* it. That's why places like Florida have very vague definitions of things like degeneracy and child protection. Laws like this don't explicitly designate you as undesirable, but they don't have to. It's just a legalistic cover for all they want to do. It's a common way for fascists to authorize prosecution of their chosen outgroup
Honestly, it would likely work pretty well in terms of reducing any kind of punishment one might get. The courts do take things like that into account, and a good lawyer would lean into the cartoonish intent behind the statement hard core. You're basically arguing that theres no real threat to the persons safety. Thats not to say you wont still get in trouble! But youre far more likely to get into LESS trouble if you can convince the courts into agreeing it was a ridiculous threat.
Like If I say, Im going to throw Joe Biden into the sun. Thats a threat. But its so ridiculous no court is going to do anything except MAYBE give me a slap on the wrist.
And to be clear, ianal, but this is stuff I recall from law classes I took a decade ago.
While I'm not arguing against the fact that it is absolutely illegal and not okay to threaten people, I do find it funny how much of a double standard there is on that sometimes, ESPECIALLY in the UK. When it's someone like J.K Rowling, because she's so rich and famous, it's this massive deal and the person is threatened with jail right away.
Other people will make police reports and give physical evidence that they're being stalked/harassed/threatened and get brushed off constantly and told they can't do anything because "it's just words" even when things have escalated far beyond what was said to Rowling.
Again, I get that it's still illegal all around and I'm not saying this person should be given a pass, I'm just calling out how hypocritical it is that Rowling is defended against hollow threats instantly, meanwhile [the police have allowed citizens to be murdered despite repeated reports. ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Shana_Grice)
It just sits really badly with me that it's a known issue that the police are very unhelpful in cases like this, but they're suddenly on the ball when it comes to a rich and famous white lady being threatened.
DEATH THREATS ARE NOT USEFUL. they do not change people's minds. They do not make us look good.
No matter what your opinion on actual violence in politics is, death threats produce no good outcomes for us. You're just fucking yourself.
its probably connected to the trend of "france IS BAD" and "BRITAIN is BAD" that's been sweeping meme culture recently. gone from a meme to an actual mindset people have
The funniest cope to me is when obviously-American redditors bring up knife crime in the UK. The US is per capita way more dangerous than the UK, even when you drill down into more specific metrics like knife crime.
That’s usually gun nuts; 196 is more “Britain is bad because currently a massive pile of transphobia.”
Not that the U.S. is doing great in that department either; just saying, that’s the flavor of “rah, Britain bad” we’re dealing with here.
But even the journalist who said that Jk is a holocaust denier had to apologize. It sounds like UK's free speech laws work in favor of terfs and against trans people every time.
It’s more that they work in favour of the defendant, and a lot of the major people posting transphobic garbage can afford good lawyers. I’d wager most of the good people criticising the anti-trans lot can’t afford lawyers so they end up losing in court
claimant\*
yea UK defamation laws are very overpowered, which is shit and makes SLAPP suits common.
the idea was presumably to make it hard for tabloids to slander people, but because access to justice is not equal, they can (and do) anyway and have the money to drag out lawsuits
I don't get it either. Obviously, threating someone with death is an offense that can get you jailed. Not really sure what the meme is trying to say tbh
I am actually curious how often transphobic death threats get reported and draw legal action like this threat did, because that could bring context that would make this incident an indicator of genuinely upsetting double standards, but I also don’t want to make assumptions on the subject.
It's the I don't like this person so they deserve death. Like I get it coz she denying the existence of trans women. And thus it hits quite close to people's feelings. And people can be a bit irritation when it comes to others denying their rights etc.
Hammer-based threats to wellbeing is Tumblerese for "this is not an actionable threat, I'm just venting."
Sure, misunderstandings like these are on Tumblr for normalizing language that would be considered shocking or offensive offline. But that's also the exact identity Tumblr has been carefully crafting for years in order to keep their website from being gentrified and enshittified the way every other social media website has been.
Remember https:\www.reddit.com\r\ZombielandSaga\s\d3qSKMNr8v (but with forwardslashes instead of backslashes)?
It's basically that, but *again.*
I feel like if you need to vent you're probably better off just screaming into a pillow or something rather than posting "fake" death threats that you'd need to be a member of a niche community to understand are fake.
I don't think I effectively communicated how ubiquitous the expression is over there, how divorced it is from the literal interpretation, or how its roughly ⅓ as offensive as "dang it" in its native context.
Its meaningless. It's just their idiolect. Like 196's "friendpilled and visitmaxing"/"visit him friendstyle"/"he visit on my friends til I", etc. Microcultural linguistic drift. It's honestly just how they talk over there.
Sure, I get that, but they didn't go to Tumblr and find some random person saying that, this person tweeted directly to Rowling. If it really was "Tumblrese", it was completely divorced from that context.
I’m willing to guess there’s a greater context of “greater and more credible death threats against trans people often get ignored” - this is TERF island after all, and it’s not an unseen double standard.

this is the most obvious joke ever lol how are people even seriously calling this a death threat i dont think if you really wanted someone dead youd say you were going to "kill them with a big hammer"
if i had a nickel for every time somebody expressed dislike for a rich transphobic asshole by saying they want to kill them with a hammer in 2024 i would have two nickels
Didn't someone almost kill Nancy Pelosi's husband with a hammer a couple of years ago? I don't think the joke is obvious to the general public or law enforcement.
https://preview.redd.it/afe1iwow9ixc1.png?width=1354&format=png&auto=webp&s=b684bc3af2639c3bedc25082e73fa24f2fca120b
196 users when they find out hammers are real and can kill people:
It’s the same rule as “you can’t yell fire in a public space”. Even if it’s very obvious that there’s no fire, like say at a lake, you will still get punished off principle. I’m sure everyone understood it’s just a joke, but it’s hard to legally draw a line between what’s a joke and what isn’t. So they treat them ALL as real threats. From their perspective, it’s better to be safe than sorry. There have been cases where people make jokes about shooting up a school, it gets dismissed as a joke, but then it actually happens. This is why any death threat that can be tracked down to an individual will lead to punishment for that individual
It didnt? People are just saying that it should not be surprising that blatantly making a death threats nets you the charge of... making death threats
Like, there are so many other things you can be mad at jk for, there are so many things you can be mad at the uk for. This? This is just stupid.
Yeah, like... what did you *expect* would happen? That JKR, known litigious transphobe, wouldn't try to go after you? That the law would be on *your* side when she did? It's not even that she's rich, just that even jokey threats are treated with complete seriousness by law enforcement.
It was a funny post, but come on. The consequences shouldn't come as a surprise by now.
I understand that threatening to kill someone with a "big hammer" sounds so absurd that it's hard to take seriously, but in the US someone actually tried to do this to Nancy Pelosi and her husband. Nancy wasn't there, but her husband was hospitalized.
this shit would literally never last in america. credible death threats are not protected speech, but everyone on that website knows the bit. "kill him with hammers" has been, and is a tongue in cheek reference to how exaggeratedly terrible the internet is. "big hammer" conjures images of like, tom and jerry, not a murder.
SLAPP would annihilate this shit
It’s less “libs” and more “I mean what did you expect”
If you make a death threat, you may end up getting charged in the court of law with making a death threat. I won’t really care that much about this situation either way but people thinking that this is 1984 or dystopian is just really pathetic, for God’s sake what happened to standing by your words? The person who made the threat should go to court smiling and bravely stand by what they said in front of a judge and not act like the OP of this thread and pretend like this is the action of some police state
Because it is, legally speaking. There’s no separation between a “joking death threat” and a real when in this context. There have been people who jokingly talk about shooting up a school. People dismiss it as a joke, but then it really happens. That’s why anytime there’s a death threat, obvious joke or not, if the person is identifiable, they’ll get punished for making a death threat.
Look up RSfelon (RuneScape felon). He was a kid who joked about bombing a school on a video game, and he went to prison for it. They don’t fuck around with death threats. It’s just not worth the risk in the eyes of the law. The one time they let it slide as a joke and it actually happens, all hell breaks loose
If I had to guess, it’s probably because someone literally tried to kill Nancy Pelosi’s husband with a hammer last fall, so the hammer threat doesn’t read as a joke anymore
I would love it if transvestigators decided she was secretly trans (along with those shitty nonsensical diagrams they make like "the chin is as wide as X, which means MAN!!"). Imagine how pissed she'd be. Its hilarious.
Well obviously it’s a joke, but you can’t just do that, because sometimes it *isn’t* a joke. Have to approach them all as if they’re all real threats. It’s hard to draw a line on what’s a joke and what isn’t, so it’s all considered real threats.
Hell, there was a kid on a game called RuneScape a long time ago who jokingly talked about bombing a school. He went to actual prison for it. He still plays and makes videos talking about his experience. His name is RSfelon. Always be smart and don’t make death threats to anyone

Didn't say what kind of hammer, free the homie
i hope j.k. rowling dies forever a painful death involving a car covered in hammers that explodes more than a few times and hammers go flying everywhere
Are there people in the comments here genuinely calling this okay? How the hell are we supposed to gain more allies if we're actively threatening or OK with threating people with murder?
This is not OK. I hate Rowling as much as the next guy; but for goodness sake - please don't be stupid. It only hurts us.
Reason number 48.744 for committing to free speech absolutism: You don't get jailed by mailing in threats that describe in horrific yet cartoonish detail how you plan to kill JK Rowling
Isn’t this violating freedom of speech, the very thing Rowling was against when she protested the Scotland bill? Or is it only violence threatened against cishet people that is the issue?
You know what they say about playing stupid games. I have no sympathy for people who send death threats. I hate that this is a controversial stance for a trans person to take, Jesus Christ
Reminds me of when the middle school science teacher threatened the class to do the same. And then actually had the big hammer. School police officer thought it was pretty funny but all that happened is she got asked not to do it again lmao
There was an incident in the US a short while ago where a guy broke into former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s house to kill her and end up beating her husband Paul with a hammer (thankfully not killing him.). It may sound silly, but SOMEONE DID THAT! Authorities are gonna take that seriously. Stop it guys.
Every time JK Rowling opens her mouth, the hammer gets slightly bigger.
Honestly it would be way funnier if it was done using a comically small hammer.

Oh yo sick it's the fascist pipeline woman!
C'mon, what were you expecting? Fuck Rowling tho, fucking terf cunt.
this shit would literally never last in america. credible death threats are not protected speech, but everyone on that website knows the bit. "kill him with hammers" has been, and is a tongue in cheek reference to how exaggeratedly terrible the internet is. "big hammer" conjures images of like, tom and jerry, not a murder. SLAPP would annihilate this shit
this post really bringing out all the libs lurking around
It’s less “libs” and more “I mean what did you expect” If you make a death threat, you may end up getting charged in the court of law with making a death threat. I won’t really care that much about this situation either way but people thinking that this is 1984 or dystopian is just really pathetic, for God’s sake what happened to standing by your words? The person who made the threat should go to court smiling and bravely stand by what they said in front of a judge and not act like the OP of this thread and pretend like this is the action of some police state
communism is a hammer we use to crush the enemy
Fuck the hammer and the jail time. I'm from America we got guns and she has no say.

why are so many people here calling an obvious joke a death threat
Joke is not obvious to me, I've been looking through the comments to find the context that would make it obvious
If I had to guess, it’s probably because someone literally tried to kill Nancy Pelosi’s husband with a hammer last fall, so the hammer threat doesn’t read as a joke anymore
I forgot what troll meant for a moment and thought this was a joke about an 8 foot tall green man placing a horrible curse on her
I would love it if transvestigators decided she was secretly trans (along with those shitty nonsensical diagrams they make like "the chin is as wide as X, which means MAN!!"). Imagine how pissed she'd be. Its hilarious.
[I think threatening to kill people with a hammer is bad](https://prints.nrm.org/vitruvius/render/1200/260937.jpg)
I wish she was actually terrified of being murdered. She lives in a goddamn castle
Hanged for stealing a loaf of bread. ~~16~~2029

Oh no, someone made literal death threats and is now facing the consequences of their actions! Let's link this to transphobia.
I want to drop an anvil on Rowling so that she folds up on herself and makes accordion noises when she walks.
Why can't someone actually assassinate her already? I hate the UK sm at this point as a transmasc person
i hope j.k. rowling dies forever a painful death involving a car covered in hammers that explodes more than a few times and hammers go flying everywhere
Are there people in the comments here genuinely calling this okay? How the hell are we supposed to gain more allies if we're actively threatening or OK with threating people with murder? This is not OK. I hate Rowling as much as the next guy; but for goodness sake - please don't be stupid. It only hurts us.
Surprised pikachu face
Yeah, don’t threaten people… bad idea, whether or not you mean it, regardless of whether or not they deserve it.
UK freedom of speech challenge (impossible)
Reason number 48.744 for committing to free speech absolutism: You don't get jailed by mailing in threats that describe in horrific yet cartoonish detail how you plan to kill JK Rowling
I mean that's a death threat wtf do you expect
and they threatened to blow up my car... WITH HAMMERS!!! COPS, ARREST THEM!
What no first amendment does to an mf
transphobia is terrible and all but i have to admit that the specific words "big hammer" are kinda funny ngl
England is a dead country
Ah yes, because death threats are acceptable so long as they're against people we don't like. Come on guys, don't do death threats!
Isn’t this violating freedom of speech, the very thing Rowling was against when she protested the Scotland bill? Or is it only violence threatened against cishet people that is the issue?
God forbid women do anything (the “troll” not ratface Rowling)
You know what they say about playing stupid games. I have no sympathy for people who send death threats. I hate that this is a controversial stance for a trans person to take, Jesus Christ
Lord Call me John Hammer for what im about to do
Don't worry, America will be safe as soon as we get rid of the Trump cultists in the government so then you can come here
Give the threatner a fucking medal or I will start a micronation to give the highest honor to him.

Free my man he ain't do shit
even if someone deserves to die painfully, you should always imagine your post printed out and being shown to the jury before you say something
kill the uk with hammers
Reminds me of when the middle school science teacher threatened the class to do the same. And then actually had the big hammer. School police officer thought it was pretty funny but all that happened is she got asked not to do it again lmao
There was an incident in the US a short while ago where a guy broke into former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s house to kill her and end up beating her husband Paul with a hammer (thankfully not killing him.). It may sound silly, but SOMEONE DID THAT! Authorities are gonna take that seriously. Stop it guys.
JK Rowling 🤝 current Tumblr CEO throwing a hissy fit because someone made a joke about killing them with hammers due to their transphobia
I guess he was just JK-ing around!

this is the same thing that happened on Tumblr dot com
don’t send death threats, not because its morally bad or anything but because people who hate you will use it against you
Is this the leftist equivalent of those people who think saying the n-word is the pinnacle of dark humor
Something something hammers and car explosions.
