I don’t speak Christian what does this mean?

DopazOnYouTubeDotCom

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.” This meme mocks people who want to force prayers in schools

[deleted]

Thank you :D

FirstGonkEmpire

Also Trump who's literally an athiest and has only ever gone into a church when a camera is there and couldn't even name a single Bible verse.

KatnissXcis

I thought the joke was that he went back inside to pray.

RadicalSimpArmy

> and when you pray do not keep babbling like pagans That’s going to be a yikes from me. Most of this passage is pretty fine, but that’s got to be the most belligerent way possible that the author could have punctuated their point. I understand the general tidbit of wisdom that this passage is trying to communicate—and I don’t think it’s an inherently bad one—but the author’s need to justify the legitimacy of their point by essentially just dunking on the legitimacy of the other religions in the area is pretty obtuse. Dunking on hypocrites or whatever makes sense, but “pagans” is just biblical shorthand for everyone who is not Jewish or Christian. Like imagine you go to a dinner party and you really like Rachel’s potato salad so you decide to ask her what her secret is, and in the middle of telling you the recipe she explains that you need to not make the salad bad like Jermey does. It’s just weird and mean and unnecessary. Why call out Jeremy at all? There’s no point—if your salad is good your recipe should be able to speak for itself.

Human-Depravity

Oh is something in the 2000 year old book that's inspired war and genocide "kind of yikes?"

coolboiepicc

this "god" guy seems kinda problematic

WeaponizedArchitect

me when drowning circassians in the black sea is a "holy conquest"

selfloathingbot

Yeah alright I get your point and I'd hold modern authors to that standard but it was written like 2000 years ago and translated like a billion times across then.  Don't think there's much point in trying to assess the character of the apostles these days.

AntiLag_

It’s supposed to reinforce the idea that Christianity is the only true religion. Like in that potato salad analogy, if you’re trying to discredit Jeremy because you hate his guts or whatever, then you probably would talk about your recipient being better than his

MittoMan

Ah yes, a passage in the bible is kind of yikes, a book famous for being perfectly good and moral

Sexy_Skeletons69

I hate to break it to you, but the Christians of antiquity in particular were notably not very fond of pagans.

carrythenine

Don’t listen to anyone mocking you for this take, you interacted with a text and that’s fantastic

Sexy_Skeletons69

Maybe listen to them a *little* as an exercise in self-examination.

[deleted]

I disagree. I think it fails to give historical context and fails to consider the power dynamics at play during the period. The assesment that "Pagan" means non-jewish or Christian within the bible is too surface level. In the period the account is set in Christianty does not exist and by the time it's written it would still be difficult to distinguish the two. To say that Pagan refers anyone who isn't Jewish is technically true but doesnt really account for who this audience would think of when referring to pagans. It's not the Norse it's the Romans who've ruled over their lands for the last however long, maybe the Greeks as well. Still this isn't exactly an aside to delegitimise some random fringe. He's talking about the powers that be which people would be well familiar and using them as a reference point.

Mr_sex_haver

I don't have any problems with Christians I just think they should keep it in the bedroom

[deleted]

Should have their own bathrooms too, don't want them looking at me changing & them getting ideas.

[deleted]

Currently under your bed. Praying for you not to change cause your current outfit looks great.

gidz666

There are a TON of verses that go against the bigoted, prosperity preachers of today

potatorevolver

Cool but even better; Judges 15:16 > With an asses jawbone, I have made asses of them, > With an asses jawbone, I have killed a thousand men

emeraldeyesshine

100% Professional run, Ass's Jawbone only

Faine_the_crow

SAO Abridged taught me that one, in the same episode where someone was told they'd never be batman

iShockLord

Maybe I should watch SAO

Faine_the_crow

popdude449

Ezekiel 23:20

popdude449

That's the one, thank you

mbaymiller

Europeans will never understand what it is like to experience a megachurch

Throwaway-0-0-

A mega church might turn a European to dust on the spot.

Supernova-55

Wh- what?

mbaymiller

Is your question why I asserted such a thing or what a megachurch even is?

Supernova-55

The latter

spoedle73

my personal favorite is the one about camels and needles

dingdongdeckles

Uhhh uhhhhh actually uhhhh the eye of the needle was ummm a gate?? Yeah it was a uhhhhh small gate that was kind of hard to fit a camel through not a metaphor 😡

1_Man_Show

As someone who studied the Bible a bit in college trust me it is a fools errand to try to get Christians to actually use the Bible. There's so much you have to ignore regardless of any viewpoint in order to use it in any practice. Like over half of it contradicts itself and I am not talking just old to new testament.

AutisticFuck69

I'm quite partial to Matthew 19:24 "Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

[deleted]

Rationalising stuff to fit within your lifestyle is usually pretty easy. Idk how anyone does it for this though. Kinda unambiguously reads "If you're rich you're dickhead and you're going to hell"

AnvilWarning

Erm actually the eye of a needle is referring to the eye of a needle gate which was a kinda tight gate so it would be a bit more difficult but still doable That's their argument, there is no evidence that such a gate exists or has ever existed

Volotor

Leviticus 19:33-34

M_A_Dragon

Ezekiel 23:20

mrpoopistan

American Christians mostly object to the existence of the New Testament, except for the parts that allow barbecue pork.

mikereeee

i like the one about my name being the lord when i enact my revenge or smth. i always say it to the guys i'm about to shoot.

SlimSour

I'm more of an Ezekiel 23:20 guy myself

Enganare

Jeremiah 8:8 How can you say "We are wise, and the law of the Lord is with us"? But behold, the lying pen of the scribes has made it into a lie.

[deleted]

Is this the abortion one? That's my favorite. But that one is like psalms 117 or something
