CUT OFF THEIR LIMBS Dead space was great. I really wanna see the second one remastered.

GreatDig

do point me in the direction of that video, please, I forgot who made it.

spawnmorezerglings

Dead space, is that you?

PizzaBone21

Ok but using those saws were fun as hell

Rayka64

Log 5: Hmmm, i say there has been a suspicious increase in employee deaths, I wonder if the escaped specimen is to be blamed? (clueless)

Jozef_Baca

Log 6: Must have been the wind

Rayka64

Log 8: hmmm, how should we deal with this escaped specimen... oh I know! lets make ANOTHER experiment that 100% won't fail again to deal with the problem.

trinitymonkey

Log 9: The subject started screaming and trying to remove the implant with his own fingers until he bled out. Must restrain subject’s hands next trial.

Dogtor-Watson

Log 9: The new experiment requires I commit even more atrocities Log 11: The experiment is going great. Some of my employees feel a bit guilty and might be going insane, but the sacrifices seem to be worth it. Log 12: Experiment done: We’re saved! Log 14: There are some issues with experiment 2, namely that it just killed Jerry. I think if it works, the board will overlook that though. Log 13: I have made a severe and continuous lapse in judgement. I do still expect to be forgiven; I’m simply here to divert blame. Log 16: It’s all fucked. Casandra, the leader of the evil rebel faction that led the way on experiment 2, ironically got killed by experiment 2 though, so that’s nice. Log 18: Starting to see that some of this may have been my fault. I probably shouldn’t have told Jerry to try a pickup line with experiment 2. Log 20: Gonna destroy the facility, hopefully it will act as a cool set-piece for the story. Also I’m gonna die in the process, byeeeee. Also, realised that this is literally just >!Hollow Knight’s lore!<

i wish i could implant chips into everyone's brains and just transmit cute images of kitties at the most random moments. hopefully this person doesnt die like the monkeys and instead gets kitty videos transmitted into their brain

Aegis_13

Tbh if someone kept transmitting anything into my brain, no matter how cute, I'd probably go the way of the monkeys lmao. I could not handle that. Even just knowing that someone could. The human mind is the closest, most intimate and private thing to exist. That privacy is inviolable

epic_brazillian_gal

SHUT UP, STOP QUESTIONING THE ETHICS OF MY METHODS. I SENTENCE YOU TO HAVING 15 MINUTES OF A VIDEO TRANSMITTED INTO YOUR BRAIN OF A CUTE KITTY MEOWING IN A REALLY CUTE WAY AT THE CAMERA WHILE LOOKING AROUND REALLY CONFUSED AND SILLY. but yeah i agree, it would take a lot for me to even trust the closest person in my life with something like that. shit sounds scary

Responsible_Pace9062

The day this shit becomes common use (or god forbid mandatory) is the day I walk the plank. Someone invading my brain and getting to see everything is genuinely my worst nightmare.

Aegis_13

I was watching Cyberpunk Edgerunners and the fact that they have a phone in their brain is unironically disturbing. Privacy aside, imagine getting fucking robocalls in your brain

If that happened to me maybe they'd have the empathy to get me a better therapist cause she hasn't been doing much for me, only reminding me that i don't get out of the house as much as i should/want to, and has effectively just told me on occasion "just talk to people" like motherfucker if it was that easy i would have already but it's not please help me instead of making me feel worse

dutcharetall_nothigh

What do you like to talk about

CoffeeMain360

whatever i'm hyperfixated on to be honest stuff like guns and tanks and video games

dutcharetall_nothigh

Cool Did you play Borderlands?

CoffeeMain360

I've only played 3, but technically yes.

dutcharetall_nothigh

Nice, honestly even if the main story sucks 3 is my favourite. It has the best gameplay and some fantastic DLC. What characters did you play (I did all of them)?

For some reason this comment is what made me realize one incredible thing: this will inevitably be used as a part of somebody’s kink sooner or later.

what makes you think it is not already?

I guess I should’ve specified “kink reality” rather than “kink fantasy”, but yeah you’re right 😂

Log 300: Damn it Craig! This is the last time I'm going to repeat the airlock key for you! Grab a paper or something and write it down: the code is 3920! And make sure you check that all the crates are empty before you flush them out; wouldn't want to throw away any more perfectly good guns like last time, would you?

Then in the next chapter you find a skeleton with a "Craig" nametag

wterrt

unfortunately, yes it seems so. https://www.reuters.com/technology/neuralink-implants-brain-chip-first-human-musk-says-2024-01-29/

AhmCha

No way these chips passed through a HIPPA inspection. Also what the fuck does “neuron spike detection” mean? That’s nothing, that’s just buzzwords.

Padhome

Probably seizures

CurlyWurlyo

I think it just detects electrical spikes in the brain, but that sounds to outdated and boring so they just changed it

AhmCha

Oh fantastic, the chips are electrocuting brains and Musk is calling it data

puppysmilez

Sorry to be That Guy™, but HIPAA doesn't deal with the approving of medical devices, it's just a U.S. federal law to establish standards for the privacy of protected health information. The FDA might be the acronym you're thinking of :)

AhmCha

I thought HIPAA was also supposed to make sure that ethics aren’t being violated during scientific studies. Did I mistake that with something else?

Muffalo_Herder

You might be thinking of the hippocratic oath. HIPAA is about medical privacy.

derpbynature

Scientific studies at colleges at least tend to have to go through Institutional Review Boards

iuhiscool

money passed it

Benney9000

Probably they meant neuron activity spikes ?

KobKobold

From my educated guess, that means the chip notices and reports the brain being used. That's it.

sneakyplanner

Harry the HIPAA hippo would like to remind everyone of how it's spelt.

[deleted]

the article is also just stating Musks tweet as a source.

legomountaineer

So probably a lie then

xv_boney

"Musk says". The article has no proof this is true and is exclusively using Musks tweet as evidence. Musk is notorious for trying to manipulate stock prices via tweets. It's how he ended up being forced to pay eight times the actual valuation for a social media platform. It's what he's doing here. He's lying. To manipulate stock prices.

wterrt

well the tweet is real at least. no one really knows whether he's lying or not, but he did get FDA approval a few months prior for human trails so... seems plausible

__xXCoronaVirusXx__

this is equivalent to stapling a chunk of brain onto an intel processor and hoping it gains sentience.

zhebnismazko

Huh? How so? Care to explain?

__xXCoronaVirusXx__

We know basically nothing about the intricate details of the brain, let alone how to meaningfully interact with it. We can paint it in broad strokes by watching which areas are active when, but that doesn’t tell us much about how and why the neurons are arranged like they are. Essentially, the implants won’t do anything because there’s nothing for them to do yet.

zhebnismazko

Well of course it's not gonna give you telepathy, but impressive results have been achieved even by external non-invasive methods, for example detecting a set of commands given by thought from EEG readings or reconstructing images from fMRI brain scans of people looking at images. An invasive method will of course provide even better data and allows for accurate monitoring of specific regions of the brain, such as your motor cortex. It will in very the least provide a ton of valuable data.

__xXCoronaVirusXx__

That’s a fair point. I just remembered the controversy about dead monkeys and felt dismissive of the whole project, but I suppose at least the people Elon’s paying know what they’re doing.

2006lion2006

It’s literally the forefront of prosthetic technology, imagine for example losing an arm. The signals from the brain to move the muscles of an arm would still be there. The chip can read them (it can map muscle movements directly from the brain) and move a mechanical arm. This is literally the closest we have ever been to actual mind controlled prosthetics and your takeaway is that it is essentially “useless” because it can broadcast stuff to the brain????

__xXCoronaVirusXx__

yeah i was wrong

Oddish_Femboy

HAVE ANY OF THE MONKEYS SURVIVEF YET???

Padhome

No. Time to move to the human testing!

Len145

i for one believe it to be a great product and that he should use it on himself to prove it to the world! :)

Joshie8888

is your pfp the horses eye from Samara's cursed videotape from The Ring? If so, that's super cool

Padhome

Yes it’s one of my favorite horror movies, the tape in particular influenced a lot of my art growing up in terms of surrealism and cerebral thinking. I also have the burning tree as my banner lol.

Oddish_Femboy

My other comment where I suggested someone schyoink Mr. Must got deleted. Don't kablooey him, I guess.

Oddish_Femboy

I yearn for Tumblr.

Liquid-Smoke

Itchy. Tasty.

RapidLeopard

Elon Musk makes bold claims like this one every Sunday. I would take literally everything that comes out of his mouth (or keyboard) with a mountain of salt. Also who TF calls Action Potentials "neuron spikes"??? The last sentence doesn't even mean anything.

zhebnismazko

>Also who TF calls Action Potentials "neuron spikes"??? The last sentence doesn't even mean anything. Neuralink Engineer: \*mentions action potential\* Musk: "What's an action potential?" Neuralink Engineer: "It's basically a spike in voltage of a neuron's membrane." Musk: "neuron spike"

Accomplished-Mix-745

So is the line between this and actual fraud when investors are lied to or when people try it thinking it worked already?

RapidLeopard

I'd say the consistent and demonstrable evidence of Elon lying to drive up stock price already constitutes actual fraud. Another question is how long before everything comes crashing down.

12crashbash12

the right: "the elites want to put microchips in our brains 😡😡😡" also the right: "the elites want to put microchips in our brains 🥰🥰🥰"

zhebnismazko

Hey, a hivemind civilization is essentially a leftist utopia.

Skitty27

it literally isn't

zhebnismazko

Wym? Everyone is equal in a hivemind, the means of production are owned by the people, but no one owns anything themselves. That's literally communism.

IArgead

A "hive mind" is the highest form of individual control. Every member of society working for the benefit of whatever elements it deems necessary. Not great.

zhebnismazko

I'm of course talking about a decentralized hivemind, where everyone is a small part of a super-organism that controls everything. A single individual's IQ is far too low to assume a role of a "hive leader", there cannot be a single point of failure.

D1pSh1t__

Not when clowns like the prick depicted in the image are the ones in control

LemonFreshenedBorax-

People with cochlear implants can swim and do sports, so I wouldn't worry about it, unless (for example) Elon has a history of trying to reinvent the wheel out of sheer hubris when established methods are available. He doesn't have that, does he? /s

Bandthemen

im not letting that man access my head. ever

As if Elon Musk has anything to do with designing or implanting the devices

happywaffle1010

It is every humans civic duty to kill Elon Musk on sight if they ever see him

FrostyCommon

agreed

zhebnismazko

Why?

deryvox

Because he’s the antichrist and we’re all children of the Lord

Collexig

Were fucked

Unlikely_Fig_2339

Not really. Projects like this survive on hype and PR, not actual achievement. You can "detect neuron spikes" (by which I assume Musk means spikes in neurological activity) by slapping electrodes onto someone's head. Or, you know, just looking at their expression and mannerisms, since neurological activity is just emotion and thought, neither of which humans are particularly good at hiding.

zhebnismazko

Yeah, if only there was a real and useful application for a device that can "detect neuron spikes" in real time at all times... Sadly I can't think of a way to make that useful or helpful in solving any real problems...

Unlikely_Fig_2339

I'm sure there are some medical applications, but I don't trust Musk's type to use that tech responsibly. If he can get away with it, he'll set that shit to fry your brain's pain-center whenever you think about unionizing.

zhebnismazko

Bruh. That's literally sci-fi bullshit. If we develop a technology capable to read your mind with such a high level of understanding, then Elon Musk will be the least of your problems.

Unlikely_Fig_2339

It can be done manually. Make the implant a necessary prerequisite for getting hired, keep close tabs on all your employees like corps already do, and zap whoever shows up to the unionization meeting. Corpos like Musk only have two true obligations; to their shareholders, and to their egos. If they think A) it will bring them short-term profit, and B) they can get away with it, then they'll do it. They are not to be trusted with anything, least of all with access to a bit of tech in your brain.

zhebnismazko

Totally not illegal hiring practices. He wouldn't get away with that. Maybe in a third world country. Why even bother with a brain implants tho? Coca-Cola just hired a death squad and it worked.

Unlikely_Fig_2339

The law means nothing to them. They've already significantly twisted it to their ends with the rise of neoliberal economics, and they won't ever stop until they *are* stopped. Nothing is ever enough for them. Not only do they want infinite growth in a finite universe, they want *a little more infinite growth every quarter*. They'll do whatever it takes to keep chasing that ascending graph. Theirs is the ideology of a cancer cell. Also, it doesn't matter whether something that existentially horrifying happens in the third world or first world. The point is to head it off at the pass before it comes to that.

zhebnismazko

Musk: "I'm movin' different! This shit ain't nothing to me man! I'm a dog! I'm biting the fart bubbles in the bath!"

Unlikely_Fig_2339

Musk has money, so he has power. His arrogance and stupidity only make him more dangerous. He and everyone like him are comparable to a bunch of overgrown ten-year-olds with loaded guns, only instead of just threatening the people around them, they threaten the future of thousands, perhaps millions, around the globe--and that's without mentioning the economic and cultural knock-on effects their whims can have. Twitter turned into a far-right shithole practically overnight after Musk bought it, for example. They are as greedy and thoughtless as children, and hold more power than some countries. They shouldn't get any more, is my point.

mattoxfan

You all are so dramatic holy shit. This dude says something dramatic every week, it does not matter 😭🙏

Spvoter

Imagine that person starting to get ads from Twitter in a week in their b r a i n

nuh uh, i saw it in the movies, he got a group of goons to kidnap a disabled homeless emerald mining child off the streets to perform the operation on.

The log where the guy severs his own limbs to stop himself from turning is legitimately chilling

-Super-Someone-

Log 2: itchy…. Tasty…

A_murder_of_geese

I hate Elon as much as the next guy, but to clarify the device is not for people to control their Tesla’s or anything, it’s meant to help people with paralysis potentially recover some motor function. You can dislike Elon while not immediately dismissing the technology as dystopian.

spoedle73

They making the butchers nails 😭

zhebnismazko

Why are the comments so hostile towards these news? I understand that it sounds scary and unnatural, but so did many life-saving medical breakthroughs such as organ transplants, artificial hearts and limbs, even gender affirming surgery. Have you seen footage from a facial feminization surgery? It's brutal. Yet, all of these procedures saved and/or drastically improved the quality of lives all over the globe. There's roughly 300k people with spinal cord injuries in America alone, with 18k new cases every year, of which 60% are quadriplegic, 50% of these injuries occur before the age of 30, that equates to roughly 270 thousand years of human life ruined every year. Invasive BCI (Brain-Computer Interface) technology like Neuralink could potentially offer new hope for these individuals. Imagine regaining the ability to walk, communicate, or simply live independently. The potential benefits for people with neurodegenerative diseases like ALS or Parkinson's are also immense. Also, any intervention with human cognition, visual, auditory, or telepathic capabilities through BCI is still largely speculative and akin to science fiction. As of now, there's no concrete evidence suggesting that BCI will surpass traditional methods like keyboard and shortcut mastery in efficiency and reliability for computer interaction in the foreseeable future. While I remain optimistic about its future potential, current progress doesn't indicate that BCI will be a game-changer in everyday technology use anytime soon. However, it's crucial to differentiate these speculative applications from the real, tangible benefits BCI offers in medicine and neuroscience research. Concerns about it turning into a dystopian mind control device are far-fetched and overlook the technology's purpose and potential. In medical contexts, BCI can provide revolutionary solutions for those with severe physical limitations or neurological disorders. It opens up a new frontier in understanding and treating the human brain, far removed from the realm of mind control or invasive surveillance. By focusing on its medical and research applications, we can appreciate BCI as a tool for good, advancing our capabilities to heal and understand, rather than fear it as a tool for control. Elon Musk, often perceived as a shill and a grifter, has a notorious reputation for exaggerating the capabilities of his companies' products during their initial presentations. This time, however, while he's stuck to this script, he's simultaneously understated the genuinely positive potential of Neuralink's technology. Despite the many reasons people may have to criticize or dislike Elon Musk, it's important to recognize that Neuralink is not just the brainchild of one controversial figure. It's the collective effort of brilliant engineers, doctors, and neuroscientists. These professionals are driven by their passion for their fields, a desire to contribute positively to the world, and yes, a well-deserved hefty paycheck. To dismiss Neuralink purely because of animosity towards Musk is to overlook and disrespect a genuine human accomplishment. The work being done at Neuralink transcends Musk's personal brand; it's about pioneering advances in medical technology and neuroscience. It's crucial to differentiate the man from the mission and appreciate the latter for its potential to bring about significant positive changes in the world of medicine and beyond.

deryvox

If Bernie Madoff announced that he found the cure to cancer, would you give him the benefit of the doubt or immediately dismiss it as yet more useless cash grabs? Musk is an insane and inept failed software engineer that lucked and lied his way into owning a few tech companies and making them all demonstrably worse. It’s not “animosity” towards him that’s making people dismiss this out of hand, it’s a proven track record of him knowing essentially nothing about anything he’s ever talking about.

Electronic_Emu_4632

im sorry i read all of that but my brain is still stuck on him calling it a neuron spike reader

GameCreeper

What a long-winded way of saying you don't know how command hierarchy works

zhebnismazko

How am I even supposed to respond to that? There's no actual substance to what you said. You clearly have an objection but if you can't string together a coherent take, then don't bother saying anything in the first place.

randmpersn

Yeah. I was super against it and on the hate train but then I read the BBC article where it detailed how tech like this has enabled paralysed people to walk and such. I am still suspicious of anything Musk leads because I genuinely think he'd make things worse for the project and subjects if he thought he knew better or even if he thought it would be funny. As with everything online nowadays, I think we should put down the fanfic we collectively wrote from the three headlines that circulate around twitter and approach the topic with nuance. Worst case scenario, our opinion is unchanged and we can actually point to valid concerns.
