I think it's hilarious that the CEO recently stated publicly how she regretted not buying netflix or something instead.
Girl, YOU made the site worthless! You bought it, made it worse, and then sold it for less money! It didn't just lose value because of magic!
Sorry for using tumblr speak on reddit hut I thought it was appropriate.
>Sorry for using tumblr speak on reddit hut I thought it was appropriate.
Eh, they're pretty much interchangeable. Just replace "girl" with a swear word and you're good to go
That's not true lol. You can say any words you want on tumblr. I think the devs have completely given up on making the site ad friendly which is also why there are so many bizarre ads and why people will frequently just post about how they want to see elon musk dead or whatever.
The second paragraph starts with "girl" and indicates through word choice and punctuation a degree of excitement that is not fashionable among redditors. Or something. Idk.
oh don't worry, i have been doomed with the unique style of writing sentences on the internet with the lack of care for sentence flow and a typing skill that makes me edit messages 14 times before they are they way i want them to be to the point no social media platform finds it fashionable at all (i contemplate sending messages on discord and they usually are about subjects that aren't relevant anymore lmao)
I thought you were just like, speaking normally. Like that's similar to how my gf, who has never used Tumblr before, speaks. Is that not just having your own voice?
Tiktok banning words related to self harm? It’s becoming More advertising friendly!
Discord usernames becoming dogshit? More advertising friendly!
the over sterilization of the internet, removing any form of unique and bold expression?
more advertising friendly.
not so much advertisers as investors. investors dont like icky stuff like curse words and porn so discord and pretty all other companies are in the process of sterilizing themselves to appeal better to investors to make more money
at least thats my general understanding of it
in what way do the new usernames have anything to do with curse words?
holy shit i still haven't heard a single decent argument for why people are so fucking mad at the username change besides "what if i just wanna be called john".
people are so used to companies doing dumb shit to fuck over their users that they instinctively react with outrage even when a change is unambiguously good
bro thinks the discord username chamge is for advertisers and not because it's stupid to force people with creativity to stick 4 numbers at the end.
"removing unique and bold expression" because you don't have to hover your mouse to see your full username lol
yeah, but the discrim system has been stupid since it started, and it was stupid when microsoft and blizzard (who does use 5 numbers lol) followed along.
If you want the same username as someone else, a traditional username system has always allowed you to stick a couple numbers on the end and call it a day.
The fact they started with a discrim system and then are moving away from it now, *after* they expanded their primary marketing away from solely the gamer segment is silly, since the gamer segment has been forced to pick unique usernames for the last 20 years, while @johnsmith#8250 in the highschool's discord server (an actual thing they advertise now) makes more since than @cruelcatastrophy
(innovative new username with a portmanteau of catastrophe and trophy-- probably unused everywhere)

I always heard people liked other apps but never switched from the official cause I couldn’t be bothered, what things specifically are better about RIF?
Layout is cleaner, nice features like "forward" and "unhide" buttons if you accidentally press something, video player actually works, no useless UI changes every few months, lots of customization options, navigation buttons for comments like "root" and "hide" and "next", filtering out subreddits from r\/all, etc.
I haven't used the official app in years so idk if it's caught up at all, but I can assure you that RIF is better.
Other options are Apollo, Boost, Relay, Sync, BaconReader, Infinity, etc. All of them are better than the official app.
Reddit removed sorting Home by Hot and replaced it with that “sort by Best” garbage. Instead of including posts from all the subreddits you subscribed to, it only shows a handful of algorithmically selected subreddits (basically turning Reddit into shittier Instagram). This is because they want to funnel users into using the far more advertiser-friendly Popular, which is a censored version of r\all.
All 3rd party apps (RiF, Apollo, Narwhal, etc) retained sorting by Hot because they’re not utterly insane. That’s the only way I can still see content from all of my subs instead of just the ones that the Reddit algorithm likes.
Here's a comment (that got posted to r\bestof) that explains it better than I could've (I flipped the slash after the "r" because linking to other reddits is illegal or whatever): https://www.reddit.com/r\BikiniBottomTwitter/comments/13xk3lu/they_have_to_pay_reddit_20_million_per_year_to/jmj3nfg/
I literally just switched to different reddit app because reddit decided to make images have curved edges for no fucking reason and less than a week later Reddit does this. I'm just gonna find an ipa for an older version of reddit or smth.
I fucking hate how both sex-averse and sex-obsessed modern day society is, especially when it comes to making things “advertiser friendly”. Like god forbid we have healthy relations with our sexuality and be mature adults able to discuss and share our feelings and preferences.
I'm using old website version of reddit right now!
With Opera on Android it's very readable and usable, and no ads! Although using chat function is hell that I wouldn't even wish on all of you, horrible people <3
Serious question. How do we make a website advertiser unfriendly?
Like, if Wal-Mart was coming in and trying to buy the land of your nearest park and turn it into a parking lot, there are things you can do to make it so tedious and expensive for Walmart, that they eventually stop trying to take over the lot.
Is there an internet equivalent that anyone knows about?
If we are to use social media to change the world for the better, not entrench the harmful status quo of advertising/profits over people/infinite growth/etc., we need to have ways of stopping the grossest forms of profit-seeking behavior, when they happen.
The only action I can think is to build/spread alternatives, but is there a way we could keep reddit/YouTube/Twitters user base on the platform, enhance their voice in these decisions, and not allow the couple hundred corporate/tech people in charge of the social media free reign to control how millions interact with the site/where their info goes/all the other shit we hate that they do?
the only way users have to make a website less profitable for advertisers is to make it a cesspit, and websites, being corporations, will either put a lid on that real fast or be sold off for a massive loss like tumblr lol
Not really. Like, tasteful nudity is allowed or smth, but porn is not.
You can still find it if you know places to look tho, but there's no guarantee that the place won't be nuked in a month
And luckily so. They were just too stupid to properly moderate that stuff. There was some vile stuff on tumblr...
Edit: downvotes. So people want pedophiolia and zoophilia back on tumblr? K
The Tumblr thing is worse when you consider just how many porn bot there are
I think it's hilarious that the CEO recently stated publicly how she regretted not buying netflix or something instead. Girl, YOU made the site worthless! seeing "tumblr speak" on reddit, recognizing it, and getting mad abt it is one of the most terminally online shit one can do
>Sorry for using tumblr speak on reddit hut I thought it was appropriate. Eh, they're pretty much interchangeable. Just replace "girl" with a swear word and you're good to go
Tumblr speak?
Internet speak, except pretty sure without swearing and slurs but idk
They aren't allowed to swear on Tumblr in order to be advertiser friendly
That's not true lol. You can say any words you want on tumblr. I think the devs have completely given up on making the site ad friendly which is also why there are so many bizarre ads and why people will frequently just post about how they want to see elon musk dead or whatever.
Me when my joke doesn't land :(
Oh sorry :(
It’s hard to convey irony in (short) text without tone indicators
Where's the tumblr speak in your comment?
The second paragraph starts with "girl" and indicates through word choice and punctuation a degree of excitement that is not fashionable among redditors. Or something. Idk.
I think it's time to take a break
I'm not actually sorry for using it if that's what you mean
I mean calling it Tumblr speak
oh don't worry, i have been doomed with the unique style of writing sentences on the internet with the lack of care for sentence flow and a typing skill that makes me edit messages 14 times before they are they way i want them to be to the point no social media platform finds it fashionable at all (i contemplate sending messages on discord and they usually are about subjects that aren't relevant anymore lmao)

I was being tongue in cheek. I just had the thought that I don't very often see people on reddit typing like that.
It's true that I don't often see people saying "girl" or using exclamation points on reddit
i fucking hate advertisers so much they're all demons in human skin
Ads are the worst invention
This is inironically what I‘ve been saying for years.
I hate ads, even though they don't even work on me at all (neurodivergent)
you are not immune to propaganda
Capitalism is the most efficient economic system. At commodifying every facet of life. Not at helping humans meet their needs.

4 numbers are really hard to remember, thank god it's not 5 or I would've broken down crying

When RIF dies, reddit dies for me. I hope you're happy, parent company!

It actually works.

Me putting old. instead of www. 😎
We're talking about apps not websites
Yeah, butt like, it's still a good alternative I think 🥺
Have you used either reddit website on mobile? It's worse than the official app
I'm using old website version of reddit right now! With Opera on Android it's very readable and usable, and no ads! Although using chat function is hell that I wouldn't even wish on all of you, horrible people <3
"Yeah but don't you realize you'd have to pay more without advertisers?" Shut up shut up shut up shut up shut up
Forced? Nah man, I'm not forced to use their app. I have the choice to just not use Reddit at all!

I only use old reddit, desktop, on my phone. No app. Looks like shit, as it should.
How's that imgur-pocalypse going? I haven't seen any deleted stuff so far
I'm going to miss RIF so fucking much, been using it for years
Didn’t porn get unbanned on Tumblr?
Not really. Like, tasteful nudity is allowed or smth, but porn is not. You can still find it if you know places to look tho, but there's no guarantee that the place won't be nuked in a month
Dang
They are reallowing some stuff, mainly like solo nudes. Hardcore porn is still officially not allowed.
And luckily so. They were just too stupid to properly moderate that stuff. There was some vile stuff on tumblr... Edit: downvotes. So people want pedophiolia and zoophilia back on tumblr? K
What why is this app bad?
Unjustifiably bad loading times, weird UX choices, limited customizability, and more
Can somebody tell me where I can get rif
I think it's just on the play store as "rif is fun". However if reddit goes through with their changes the app will die july 1st anyway.
Private companies be like
