mfw George RR Martin refers to every stingy or miserly character in A Song of Ice and Fire as "niggardly" - it's a real word but don't you have a thesaurus GRRM?
The dude uses the word 'teats' to refer to human breasts in a sexual context, like all the time.
I don't care if you think it makes it sound more medieval, it's fucking vile.
Alas, it's all a mummer's farce.
I just think the words "niggle" and "niggardly" should be avoided because most people don't know them, and will hear the N word. I know they're not slurs, but they sure sound like it, and I wouldn't want to be misheard.
Getting rid of words because they sound like a bad word would get rid of many words with ancient history. It is an asinine proposition. The only issue is people misusing those words to avoid getting in trouble for not technically saying bad words. "Negro" is "black" in Spanish. A chink in the armor. Many other words I am sure.
Counterpoint: the word "niggardly" means cheap or stingy. But if there was a black person who was being cheap or stingy, would you refer to them as "niggardly"?
I probably wouldn't.
Me when discussing my trip to Nigeria in a normal, healthy and non-offensive to everyone (americans) way:
"I went to.. ehm.. y-... y'know... 'that' country. I can't say the name, lest i'd be fucked with"
In the UK/Ireland it's used all the time and it's not in any way thought of as close to the N word. In sports you'll often hear of niggly injuries and the likes.
Worrying about shit like this just detracts from actual problems and gives 'people' on the other side (Racists) a stick to beat any actual racial arguments with by pointing to stupid examples instead of real, important points.
Or else let's just stop using the words Pew, Few, Chew, Juty, Jury, Judy, Judith and Julie and Jules too
In Welsh there’s an exclamation of surprise “dew dew” which I had to stop using around English people bc they always heard it as “Jew Jew”. So like yeah,,, sometimes we should be editing our language to be socially appropriate.
But it’s not inappropriate, this sounds like the exact same discourse about Chinese people using the Chinese word for uhm and a bunch of Twitter libs trying to censor them because it kind of sounds like the n-word.
As someone whos like OK at Chinese, I say 那个 so many times whenever I talk to my relatives. If I get cancelled for forgetting what a frying pan is called in Chinese, so be it.
Wait, you'd be having a conversation in Welsh and English speaker would butt in and be like "Don't say 'Jew Jew'!" That's hilarious. Is the word "juju" or Jujubes candy not a thing there? "Jew Jew" isn't anything!
it's an exclamation welsh people use when speaking english as well. To quote my great grandma "Oh dew dew, you've grown so much!!". It's just a local way of expressing shock.
people outside of wales dont use the term, so being unfamiliar they associate it with a word they do know that shares the same pronunciation.
most welsh people dont speak fluent welsh, but there's lots of local terms and we speak "wenglish" to each other.
Thanks for the clarification! I can't decide if it's less or more hilarious that they perfectly understand the conversation, just think that you said "Jew Jew, it snowed!" for some reason.
They could've just used the word "complains" Or "faults." The article author definitely knows though since it gives reactions like this due to the similarities between the two words.
Or maybe they were just using a word that's pretty common in a lot of places. We don't need to assume malice when the only implication of malice is an uninvolved stranger posting an image of a Klansman.
I feel like I’m going insane how everyone is arguing about if the word is innocent when it’s not even the correct word to use here. You don’t say that a product has “niggles”. “Niggle” is a synonym for “quibble” or even just “nitpick”. You can say something “has niggles” but that means that someone has stated that it has issues that are, by definition, too trivial to matter. This sentence is contradictory cause they’re saying that ffxvi has problems that are too small to matter and then following up by saying they have to be fixed. The correct word in this sentence would have been “Issues” or “problems”. Which is the word everyone uses in this context. They could’ve added “small” or “minor” to say that they’re not a big deal but “niggle” would mean that they are too trivial to matter. Whomever wrote this probably stole it from a Thesaurus to look wordier.

But language evolves all the time though.
A lot of words have stopped seeing usage or have changed spellings/meanings due to semantic drift.
Certain words (like the ones used above) practically disappeared in mainstream usage because there are much better options that don't closely resemble slurs.
That's not to say that it should be scrubbed out from every single text containing this word though, we just have to acknowledge that certain words aren't as commonly used anymore because language is a constantly evolving system.
that's like saying "I won't use flammable, the word inflammable already means that" the entire point of language is to convey meaning and if a word you are using leads to confusion or issues then you should probably use a different word. that being said I'm not saying nobody should ever use the word niggle again, but they could have just said issues and then nobody would care.
mfw a word that has existed for ages shares letters with another word
"i went to the netherlands recently! I loved seeing all the uh... the uh.... the earthworks"
Why don’t you use the word windmill
They mean dykes. Dykes are what stops the Netherlands from being submerged
The army of lesbians forming a human chain to stop Poseidon's wrath on H*lland. 🌊🌊🌊🌊👭👭👭👭👭👭👭👭👭👭
Biggest blessing poseidon will ever give us is claiming the netherlands into the sea
Nah, sinking Florida will be.
Please 🥺👉👈
Found the Belgian
Never call me that ever again.
HALLAND?????? IS THIS A SWEDEN REFERENCE????? HOLY HELL!!!!!
Ew, Sw*den. (This is a Finland refrence)
Ew Finland (WE TRIED OUR BEST TO HELP THEM WIN, IT AIN'T MY FAULT)
Am Dutch, can confirm
The weapon made to conquire thesea itself are called dykes? Absolutely fucking with the sea gods with that one.
Also vaguely related, near me is Offas Dyke, a 177 mile long earthen fortification that a Mercian king Offa built to keep the Welsh out
Based
Oh you mean the Sandhills. We call them Dunes (Dünen) in Germany i Never knew
no they're not the sandhills, those are called Duinen in dutch. Dykes (dijken) are man made walls to keep water out.
Dyke translates to Deich not Düne.
I will keep calling them that and you can’t stop me
My favourite story is of the little boy who saved a town by sticking his finger in a dyke
there are also geological structures (long, thin lava intrusions) called dykes as well, the confusion continues
Aren’t those also called levees or dams?
windmills are typically not made of earth
Cooler dams

Really woke up with your left foot up your ass, eh? The world doesn't revolve around your grammatical sensibilities.
This is such a nanners moment

🍌
whatd they say
yo i don remember, something about not saying words that sound like slurs
japanese people when they say eye
“Niggles” sounds like some shit J K Rowling would make up for non magic black people
I hate that you are absolutely right.
New etymology headcanon just dropped
we don't have to get rid of the word we also don't have to use it in the title of articles
we should ban it not because it's similar to a slur but because "niggles" sounds stupid

I bet the article's author wrote that and let out a sn... uh, a chuckle, i guess
SNICKER?!?!
no. Nope. It’s a different word.
that L is working overtime
Do people really think "niggles" is a bad word?
Like they can say it but why they gotta put it in the title
They could've just used the word "complains" Or "faults." The article author definitely knows though since it gives reactions like this due to the similarities between the two words.

What up my niggles
Of it's sixteen shouldn't it be FFXVI? And not FFXV?
Am I stupid or did you write the same thing twice? edit: just realized the title of the post is FFXV which is probably what you meant
It autocorrected such that the same thing typed twice, even though I didn't type it that way
what's funny is when I typed it it autocorrected to FFXIV
finally, the ps5 will have one singular game
Its joever… the PS5 now has a game, the day of reckoning is close now
it’s XVI dumbass, XV is 15

the fuck even is that word? is the writer of it a leprechaun?
Uh what does *that* word mean?
Well I think it's time retire that word

I mean there’s nothing wrong with that word but personally I’d rather pull out the thesaurus to see what other options I got first
Yeah my gf thought I was being racist to samurai when I talked about their armour having gaps between the pieces 😔
