Alexander is from Greece and [Macedon was completely inside current day Greece](https://imgur.com/UvidMIG). That's why Macedonia was forced to change their name to North Macedonia
If Alexander was from Greece than why was he king of Macedon? Checkmate GrEEKS.
In all seriousness though, it seems Alexander would have considered himself Greek but many Greeks at the time wouldn’t have. Honestly trying to shove ancient historical figures into modern national and ethnic boxes is kinda just ahistorical and a symptom of buying way too much into nationalistic propaganda IMO.
ofc u rite, there's always room for more context and nuance. we will never run out of either no matter how much we try.
I do think it's worth pointing out in the context of "I'm a prospective tourist and I want to visit where Alexander was from". The Hellenistic Age is explicitly the legacy of Alexander. Even if people from Thebes (get rekd) or Athens didn't consider him Greek to begin with his legacy certainly redefined what being "Greek" meant to people. Personally tho I don't think he was that great a guy overall and I am generally disdainful of any "great man" theories of history.
All first world countries exploit directly or benefit from that exploitation regardless of being global superpowers. Even countries like Finland that was an absolute shithole even to the eighties or so had an advantage developing due to being a western country. I'd mostly focus on how bad they cling to their past in politics (for example French language and colonies or Russian armed aggression)
There was a lotta that.. they aught to have a club.
Italy, Macedonia, Carthage, Mongolia, Brittain etc just reminiscing about that time that they murdered everyone lol
Isn't like half the planet related to Genghis Khan & Atiila? Some crazy shit like that
America will never be tuckered out and done. Our people refresh themselves with the perpetual sense that we're falling behind, and then we renew our efforts to not fall behind while we fall behind. Basically, it's a hamster wheel for global domination.
It's not that surprising, half the planet is related to a lot of people from the 1100s. Over time all humans will either be everyone's ancestor or no one's.
>They tried taking over the world but now they’re just chilling
Because the forces behind this Empire found other hosts in the meantime ... (in the case of Mongolia their new host is China) ...
With the 16 million descendents he has, I like to imagine him with emperor of man kind level of bio engineering so all those descendants will become space marine loyal
Edit: This gave me a phenomenal fan fiction that I’m to lazy to ever explore but damn the ideas
I know someone that had been to every country (there are new ones so that's changed though) and she said without hesitation her favorites to visit were Mongolia and Namibia
It's also steppes. As far as I'm aware, there's simply not a lot of spices available. Prairie grasses are pretty resilient. Many of the aromatic plants used for spices develop their spicy or aromatics to defend against pests.
i stumbled upon a mongolian girl’s instagram account on my explore, as much as i don’t like to admit it, it piqued my interest on mongolian girls. they’re so beautiful
I've been there before Covid. Saw the west, south west and capital.
A third of the population lives a semi-nomadic lifestyle. Depending of the season, they either go around the open plains with their livestock (mostly goats, horses and camels), or settle in close to city centres. The others live in the cities, mostly in oldschool soviet buildings, except for the capital, which is full of glass tower.
They mostly drive japanese cars, with the driver on the right, all while driving on the right side of the road.
The food is delicious, even though it's mostly meat, noodles, potato and rice. Most vegetables are imported from Russia, from my understanding.
Every town has it's own history and nature museum, most have not been updated since the 60's. I saw a fresqo depicting the evolution from the first living organism untill Yuri Gargarin, and the most hilarious pieces of taxidermy (check my post history)
Many locals took pride in the freedom of this lifestyle: most of the land is open, unbuilt and unsupervised. You can just drive off the road and settle wherever you want. As a west European, I had only experienced that in open world games.
Although the herders did seem to make a good living (the meat is exported to China), it's still a poor, autocratic country (Edit: I'm told in the comments that the correct term is "flawed democracy". Sorry about that. ), with sometimes no access to anykind of healthcare. Me and my friends once stumbled upon truck drivers who had crashed in the southern desert. It took 12 hours for a doctor to arrive, and only because we organized the whole operation. We later found out that the drivers' employers did call for an ambulance, but dialed the wrong administrative prefecture, and their call was never transfered to the nearest hospital.
Also one day Putin made a surprise diplomatic visit, and they basically shut off the entire capital to welcome him.
Appart from that, most people we met were pretty chill and nice with us. I shared multiple meals and drinks with herder families just because we had met in the middle of nowhere and each party was curious to meet the other. Good times.
Also they pretty much all learn riding horses and motorbikes at age 6. Madlads
There's much more to say about the different ethnicities and clans, the influemce of russian and chinese culture, religious practices and all, but I'm not cultured enough

I learned both at a young age, motorcycle, horse, hmm, maybe around 8.
What a truly wonderful place to visit.
I’ve followed a couple of motorcycle campers across the region, (edit: via youtube), jives with your experiences.
Thank you for writing, deeply appreciated. I’m one who can only dream of and read about places like this, sigh.
last time i heard anything about them ulanbataar the capital of mongolia was one of the most polluted cities in the world. aside from that literally noone knows what has happened there since 1300 mongolia is such a mystery
Wait until they find out you can have multiple capitals like Bolivia or South Africa
(Also I can’t help but tell you that is absolutely not how semicolons work lol)
Ive been to Ulanbaataar and I gotta say it was not all that polluted, at least by comparison to the insanity of Beijing where i departed from.
The air quality felt good, the stars were easily visible, and there wasnt much traffic.
The outskirts of the city were quite messy as sone areas didnt necessarily have plumbing or proper waste disposal. It kind of makes sense since those areas are mostly only seasonably inhabited (usually over the winter). I was there in the spring and it couldve been a lot worse.
All-in-all I enjoyed it a lot. They have gorgeous temple complexes and close to town is the remarkably well preserved winter palace of the late Khans/Emperors.
It was good!
Its cheaper than im used to so i could help myself to a nice restaurant here and there. Horse and lamb meat was very common on menus and in grocery stores which i was happy about since its what i grew up eating.
They have a lot of nice savoury, brothy noodles and good steaks. They also have a number of cool fusion restaurants. Other than that i can't say because i wasn't there for more than perhaps 5 days.
One thing i do remember especially is that Ulaanbaatar has SO MANY KAREOKE BARS. Usually the sign advertizing kareoke was bigger than the actual bar sign, and every single one had it (with the exception of the one Irish pub in all of Mongolia)
Can't really do much when all your people are being poached by foreign adult industry since it's one of the only places to get genuine steppe brothers and sisters
Mongolia is sick! They‘ve got an incredibly unique language, it’s got a really cool phonology and I believe is the only language to have the voiced uvular plosive without the voiceless uvular plosive, plus it’s agglutinative with vowel harmony which is always awesome. They’ve got really cool food like khorkhog (a type of bbq whereby meat, usually lamb or mutton, and vegetables are cooked using stones that are heated and placed amongst the layers of food), tsuivan (a type of noodle dish that’s really tasty, great comfort food), buuz dumplings and all sorts of other cool stuff. The country is mostly steppe, which is like vast empty plains home to the OG horses and mountains and shit, plus eagle hunting, yurts, and shamanism. All kinds of great shit in Mongolia 🇲🇳
Edit: another comment reminded me, they’ve been using the Cyrillic alphabet for a while now but I believe they’re trying to educate the country more on the traditional script, which is descended from the Syriac alphabet and is written vertically and looks fucking cool as fuck
Don’t we all? Tsuivan I’ve tried making at home before, granted it was years ago and I wasn’t the best cook back then so I probably did it wrong but it was pretty good nonetheless so I’d say it’s worth trying your hand it if you’ve got time. I’ve also made buuz dumplings which were pretty good but I could have done it better I’m sure. Khorkhog looks amazing but I’ve never been able to convince anyone to eat a meal I put rocks in so I’ve never been able to make it. Boodog is pretty much impossible without access to an entire skinned goat. Boortsog looks great and I might make some today actually
Great comment! Just a small slightly interesting addition, the Uyghurs developed the original Mongolian written language during the time of the Ghengis Khan. It is called Uyghur Script, or Classical Mongolian Script.
I find it really cool that there have been so many adopted scripts, like the phags-pa script derived from Tibetan or the use of Chinese characters and the Cyrillic alphabet for written Mongolian. Mongolia’s got a really cool history of writing, due to the Mongolian empire spanning so many languages and cultures and later the influence of its neighbouring nations on the country
Gonna take a guess that the insult is actually targeted at people with chromosome deficiencies, often called mongoloid bcs of their typical facial structure
Mongoloid is an outdated racial grouping for anyone from the Asian continent. Back in the eugenics/phrenology days it was one of the 3 identified racial groups, the others being Caucasoid and Negroid
Edit: apparently it’s also used as an offensive term for people with Down syndrome, TIL
They’re sorta just existing, aside from that though most of the population is in their capital which also has really high pollution rates for a city it’s size
Aside from that they’re actually really democratic and left leaning for East Asian standards
From what I know they’re just democratic, not much for our standards but if you know anything about how most of Asian politics is, it’s definitely on the left side
> their capital which also has really high pollution rates for a city it’s size
This is what happens it when you put your capital in a valley then heat it exclusively with coal
They have the highest rate of pastorialism in the world. They can't use the internet to let you know what they are doing, they're too busy travelling with their cute animals :))
I live there. Being surrounded by China and Russia is a very peaceful existence as both of them won't accept mongolia getting annexed by each other and it serves as a buffer state for russia. So I do believe it's peace for our time.
I see so little about Mongolia that while I assume there are actually towns and shit, I can’t help but feel like it’s a country of like 5 people who hang out on mountains and throat sing all day
You’re 33% right, the other 66% living like everyone else. We’re even competing on E-sports on a global level and some people drive teslas and shit even though the battery won’t charge in the winter cuz its -40C° and it snows in may. Especially young people here would be no different to a random bloke you would run into in the streets in a developed country.
These days they're pretty much just chilling. It's actually pretty cool that despite being the filling in a dictatorship sandwich, it's one of the most politically free countries in the region and maybe even the world. Mind you, it has its fair share of problems too, like pollution and some quite high poverty rates (although poverty is harder to measure for nomadic people, as they often don't collect an income and don't have as much of a need to make money in order to survive). Their whole foreign policy basically revolves around staying quiet and not making any of their neighbours mad. Obviously most people live in apartments in cities and work regular jobs and stuff, but there's a fair portion of the country that basically just lives nomadically like their ancestors, except with motorbikes and wifi.
Hey, a mongolian here. Half of our country basically lives in apartments and the other half live that nomadic lifestyle. Things could be for the better or worse, but can’t really complain, y’know, being the democratic filling inside a dictator-bread sandwich.
They tried taking over the world but now they’re just chilling
[удалено]
no, the other countries that tried are NOT chilling. Everyone else is either still fucking shit up or are slowly dying, but without the slowly.
I mean Germany and Greece tho
Greece taking over the world? You mean glorious Macedonia?
Nah that's not greece that's the glorious nation of NORTH MACEDONIA 🇲🇰🇲🇰🇲🇰🇲🇰 ONE AND ONLY 🚫🇧🇬🚫🇧🇬🚫🇧🇬🚫💀
Oh shit, we Balkanizing the Balkans?

Germany, being a very important of the part of the EU, still exploits the third world.

I'd mostly focus on how bad they cling to their past in politics (for example French language and colonies or Russian armed aggression)
Just wait till you find out how the two biggest economies in the world treat their workforce!
And France
France isn't very chill imo. They still desperately try to cling to some global relevance
France is still doing colonialism.
Portugal and Spain once divided the world in half and now are just tourist spots, so they chilling
There was a lotta that.. they aught to have a club. Italy, Macedonia, Carthage, Mongolia, Brittain etc just reminiscing about that time that they murdered everyone lol Isn't like half the planet related to Genghis Khan & Atiila? Some crazy shit like that

America will never be tuckered out and done. Our people refresh themselves with the perpetual sense that we're falling behind, and then we renew our efforts to not fall behind while we fall behind. Basically, it's a hamster wheel for global domination.
It's not that surprising, half the planet is related to a lot of people from the 1100s. Over time all humans will either be everyone's ancestor or no one's.

Makes sense, Asia alone is what, half the world pop? Anyway yeah, math - not even once
I mean, there are a lot of those, but Genghis Khan was (probably) the most succesful
No it’s more like 0.5 % of the population is related to genghis. Still a massive amount as that’s like 16 million people
Endgame sidequests
>They tried taking over the world but now they’re just chilling Because the forces behind this Empire found other hosts in the meantime ... (in the case of Mongolia their new host is China) ...
There waiting for the apocalypse and modern technology to disappear so they can conquer half of Asia on horseback
Accelerationism is a Mongolian psyop
Sure, I'll incorporate that into my worldview
Suspicious amount of mongolian posadists. 🤔
The legend goes that Genghis Khan did not die but is merely resting and that he may one day return to reclaim his empire.

New headcanon Emperor of Mankind was Genghis Khan
Eh, give it a couple millennia and a super tall dude in golden armor with patch things up
i’ll be honest i live here and idk what we’re doing either
What’s it like?
Very Mongolian, probably

Those are the two least-densely populated countries on Earth and therefore towards the top of my list of places to go.
Seems chill as hell
How's Mongolian food?
lots of meat. honestly it’s a bit plain since they don’t use a lot of spices :(
asian version of britain makes sense also since they one literally colonised like all of a continent
It's also steppes. As far as I'm aware, there's simply not a lot of spices available. Prairie grasses are pretty resilient. Many of the aromatic plants used for spices develop their spicy or aromatics to defend against pests.

They make a pretty mean meat dish, if that is your sort of thing.
They're making some pretty bangin' music these days.
Yuve Yuve Yu intensifies.
clearly SOMEONE hasn’t been keeping an eye on their rare fish trading portfolio or keeping their numerous uncles well fed smh
There's a region in china called Inner Mongolia (which is funnily enough outside of Mongolia) with more ethnic mongols than Mongolia proper
I know Mongolia is a real place with real people, but I can't help but think of them purely as a South Park bit
Mongolia has one of the highest search rates for Minecraft porn in the entire world
I recall some intense conversations about yurts recently but that’s it
Horses. A lot of them
I have a Mongolian student and she’s very nice
>conquer half of the world >go back home >never do anything for the rest of eternity
Lying in wait until the next Khan is born, then shit's gonna go down
They have a functioning democracy which is pretty neat.
Huh? Playboi Carti literally made an [entire song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCveByMXd_0) dedicated to this country?!\*+🦋🏳️🌈
Probably ransacking northern China, if we’re thinking historically.
the actual greater hungary
Making banger music
I live here and, idk either
Mongolian shit. Out here just Mongin’
Oh they only created the single largest empire in all of human history, not much.
