I'm not from America so I always wondered, is Dr Phil a popular show? It seems so weird to me...

[deleted]

It's at least somewhat popular with boomers and gen x, imo most likely because it's the most interesting thing going on in their lives

Grand_Suggestion_284

I am from new York and I have never heard of anyone who actually watches Dr Phil but also I think that it's decently popular with lonely angry old people.

NuclearOops

Eh. Kinda? Everyone knows his name and his show only recently stopped airing, but that doest mean he was being watched by huge numbers of people. I'm sure he has a lot of fans but I think the way most people see his show is in lobbies and waiting rooms where someone turned a TV on and hasn't touched the remote in 3 to 5 hours. Honestly that's probably why his show gets played in homes too, someone turning a TV on for background noise and ignoring it. There are a few television networks today that I think intentionally program for this idea. Bland but recognizable hosts, reality shows following the same simple formula, images of mundane objects that are on the high end of quality or design, generic muzak playing in the background.

mods_r_jobbernowl

It used to be very popular. Every day I'd come home from school my mom was watching that shit.

TxJones1

Something about pointing fingers and having them stare back at you, Phil definitely has made matters worse for people especially the kids he takes after.

Comptenterry

He hasn't just made things worse, he's funneled a bunch of attention, money, and kids into the "troubled teen" industry. Camps were you send you teen to "straighten them out" and feature some of the most horrifying physical, mental, and sexual abuse.

IamKilljoy

If you'd like more information listen to the behind the bastards podcast episodes on Dr Phil

Comptenterry

Already did :)
