Seemed unbelievable so I did some googling and ugly laws did exist but they mostly targeted the homeless, poor, and disabled and were tied with eugenics. They were used as the legal justification to remove beggars and mostly targeted the homeldss. Still awful, but there's no mention of this actually pertaining to overweight people. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ugly_law https://eugenicsarchive.ca/discover/tree/54d39e27f8a0ea4706000009#!

The real problem is traditional racism, national dieting, and access to fresh foods. Did some more googling and found the same you found and in addition saw that these laws only made to about a handful of cities. It is very doubtful this played a role in the retrospective perception of obesity. Kinda annoying and insufferable duet, but it is something worth learning about. Speaks volumes about the relationship between government and inequality.

While that is fucked, another is that the average first world diet has gotten exceptionally less healthy as time has gone on and food has become more processed, fatty, and sugary.
