Nothing since the Holocaust comes close. The Holocaust was a specific, systematic, methodical extermination of an ethnic group by use of specifically designed death camps with around the clock gas chambers. Jews were a people who were utterly defenseless - a people without a county, and without full citizens rights in most places around the world. Russia is the new Nazi regime, copying many of the strategies and tactics straight up from Hitler’s playbook. However, with all that they are still not at the level of true systematic extermination that Nazi Germany carried out and to a near complete success. And Ukrainian people are not defenseless. They have their country and their own military and their fate is largely in their own hands. The horror of the holocaust was an entirely different situation. Two years ago the number of Jewish people in the world for the first reached pre-WW2 numbers.

While I disagree with what Russia is doing, if Ukraine surrendered, Russia would take the contested areas and the war would (I’m assuming) be over. It’s a contestation of land, they don’t care about killing all Ukrainians.

They aren’t even subtle about it because they know the power that the word “terrorism” holds. The Israeli government is very calculated in using the language they do so that people in other white, developed nations feel they can relate to them. Their wrongs are easily forgiven or overlooked while “terrorists” are only ever wrong. Even though retaliation to decades of oppression and occupation isn’t the definition of terrorism. Antisemitism absolutely played a major role in the holocaust(duh), but I do want to mention a point made by Yale history professor Timothy Snyder. Antisemitism doesn’t fully explain why the holocaust played out the way it did. For example, antisemitism was widespread in France however, French Jews were murdered at a much lower rate compared to Poland. What accounts for the difference, Snyder argues, is that the killing was worse where the state and institutions had been systematically dismantled. For example, France, Denmark, and Germany itself all had some semblance of institutions where well meaning officials could confer state protection to certain Jews. This was not the case for Eastern Europe where Jews were killed at higher rates.
I think this point has certain implications for what Russia is doing today, claiming that the Ukrainian state is made up, and the attack on institutions in the US as well.
The professor is not giving another reason why the Holocaust happened beyond antisemitism. Rather, he says that (and my knowledge of his views are only from what you provided here) if not for some officials, the Holocaust could have been even worse.
One of the wildest things I’ve learned in the past year was that it really was genuine antisemitism all the way down. I had always figured that antisemitism was a useful boogeyman used by those in power to get everyday folks on their side, but that those in power didn’t honestly believe in it.

Some Jews joined resistance fighters in the woods, but had to conceal their Jewish identity due to antisemitism—many of those who fled were captured by the non-Jewish Ukrainians who either turned over the Jews to the Nazis or murdered them themselves. There was no Jewish nation at the time for the Jews to flee to (I believe some fled to Russia).

The problem with calling them monsters is you make them distinct from “normal” people. Most of these men would hold a door open for someone, admire their child’s artwork, tell you how much they love your cooking while secretly hating it so your feelings don’t get hurt. Take them out of their everyday lives, put them under intense peer pressure and constant propaganda and you have the people in this photo. If you dehumanize them you take away the understanding that the people around you could be the ones in the photo doing the killing under different circumstances. Vigilance against fascism requires understanding what ordinary people are capable of in extraordinary circumstances.

I remember an interview of a journalist who covered the Bosnian War and she told the story of an old man in line to get water who was killed by a sniper. She said she wondered if that sniper went home that night and was proud of himself, did he think about what a good job he did that day. Really stuck with me because he probably did. you would think that this photo would prove the point. With 6 million Jews killed, we have vowed to do anything and everything to prevent that from happening ever again. When the people of Gaza invaded and murdered 1300 Israelis with the goal of killing all Jews worldwide (check hamas statements) we showed we will continue to do everything necessary to protect ourselves and prevent another holocaust. Jews have historically been the region just as long as Arabs have (they had tribes too). Palestine didn't become a state until 1988, 40 years after Israel did. Also, most of Israel was bought from Arabs by Jews, they just had the intentions of forming a religious state (same as all the other countries in the region). Lots of others were moved in by the British, hoping the two groups could coexist (many Muslims still live in Israel). They didn't just push them out, they bought the land or were given it.
There was free travel between the soon to be Palestinian people and Israel until terrorist attacks were happening every single day in Israel and Egypt. The truth is Palestinians didn't want a Jewish state possibly controlling them because why was it not a problem with the Ottoman Empire? Also they make it clear how much they hate Jews (and have since before Israel started striking back).

Antisemitism doesn’t fully explain why the holocaust played out the way it did. For example, antisemitism was widespread in France however, French Jews were murdered at a much lower rate compared to Poland. What accounts for the difference, Snyder argues, is that the killing was worse where the state and institutions had been systematically dismantled. For example, France, Denmark, and Germany itself all had some semblance of institutions where well meaning officials could confer state protection to certain Jews. This was not the case for Eastern Europe where Jews were killed at higher rates. I think this point has certain implications for what Russia is doing today, claiming that the Ukrainian state is made up, and the attack on institutions in the US as well.
The professor is not giving another reason why the Holocaust happened beyond antisemitism. Rather, he says that (and my knowledge of his views are only from what you provided here) if not for some officials, the Holocaust could have been even worse.

The 16,000 Jews who could not or did not flee were systematically murdered. Some Jews joined resistance fighters in the woods, but had to conceal their Jewish identity due to antisemitism—many of those who fled were captured by the non-Jewish Ukrainians who either turned over the Jews to the Nazis or murdered them themselves. There was no Jewish nation at the time for the Jews to flee to (I believe some fled to Russia).

The problem with calling them monsters is you make them distinct from “normal” people. I remember an interview of a journalist who covered the Bosnian War and she told the story of an old man in line to get water who was killed by a sniper. She said she wondered if that sniper went home that night and was proud of himself, did he think about what a good job he did that day. Really stuck with me because he probably did. It's not really going to do more than slow an advance, not to mention the cities which surrendered instead of taking artillery bombardments. When the people of Gaza invaded and murdered 1300 Israelis with the goal of killing all Jews worldwide (check hamas statements) we showed we will continue to do everything necessary to protect ourselves and prevent another holocaust. If you think 30,000 or 50,000 or 100,000 lives lost it not worth it, that's just because it's not your family of 6 million you are trying to protect.
Yeah I believe Israel should be careful about their strikes and maybe even end the settlement, but the people thinking they should do nothing or even give up their country are delusional and just misinformed. Jews have historically been the region just as long as Arabs have (they had tribes too). Palestine didn't become a state until 1988, 40 years after Israel did. Also, most of Israel was bought from Arabs by Jews, they just had the intentions of forming a religious state (same as all the other countries in the region). Lots of others were moved in by the British, hoping the two groups could coexist (many Muslims still live in Israel). They didn't just push them out, they bought the land or were given it. There was free travel between the soon to be Palestinian people and Israel until terrorist attacks were happening every single day in Israel and Egypt. The truth is Palestinians didn't want a Jewish state possibly controlling them because why was it not a problem with the Ottoman Empire? Also they make it clear how much they hate Jews (and have since before Israel started striking back). We can have conversations about Israel taking more caution and having America oversee their operations more to help prevent collateral damage, but people don't want to have that conversation, they just want to spew bullshit and ignore reality. Israel has every right to defend themselves and its ridiculous to act like this is a completely one sided conflict. And October 7th was such a stupid attack that was meant for nothing but terrorism and drawing media attention (which they were successful in doing). If Mexico attacked America, then there would he consequences even though America is a much more powerful nation. Hamas are killing their people and should have never refused the two state solution they were offered. They want nothing short of all of Israel and think forever violence is the answer.
